In the last decade, the production and use of plastic material has increased worldwide. However, there is a lack of information on microplastics (MPs) in freshwater systems as they are less studied compared to the oceans. Fish species are of particular interest as they are used in the human diet. Among the various sources, synthetic textiles play a dominant role in microplastic emission of microplastics, especially in the form of short fibers. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence, as well as number and size of microplastics in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of the freshwater fish species common bream (Abramis brama) in the Danube in the Belgrade section. A total of ten specimens of common bream were sampled and the entire gastrointestinal tract was removed. The organic content was digested with a combined alkaline-oxidative treatment (10% KOH and Triton X-100; 30% H2O2). The filtered samples were visually observed under a binocular microscope. A total of 136 MP particles were collected from nine fish species. The MPs captured were exclusively fibers with a dominant green colour belonging to the mesoplastic. The length of the MPs ranged from 0.5 mm to 50 mm. The results are consistent with previous studies in which fibres were described as the predominant form of MP in fish. The present results contribute to a small body of research on the occurrence of MPs in freshwater species. However, there is a need for further studies with other fish species.
