Preeclampsia represents a pregnancy specific syndrome characterized by elevated arterial blood pressure and proteinuria. The aim of this study was to evaluate whole blood and erythrocytes energy status in healthy and preeclamptic women. Our study involved 18 healthy (control) and 19 preeclamptic women. Diagnosis of preeclampsia was done according to the recommendation of International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy. After blood collection and erythrocytes extraction, the next parameters were followed: concentrations of lactate and adenine nucleotides (ATP, ADP and AMP). Results showed increased concentrations of lactate and ATP in whole blood of preeclamptic, vs. control pregnant women. All parameters of energy status were also elevated in erythrocites of preeclamptic women (elevation of ADP level was significant). This study suggests that preeclamsia was followed by an elevation of all parameters of energy status in whole blood and in erythrocytes, as a result of increased rate of glycolysis. .
