AB - This study focused on examining the phytoremediation potential of a naturally colonized species, white poplar (Populus alba L.), on fly ash (FA) deposits. The research was undertaken at the fly ash deposit site of the 'Nikola Tesla A' thermoelectric power plant ('TENT A') in Obrenovac, formed on fertile agricultural land, 30 km south-west of Belgrade, on the right bank of the River Sava. The total As, B, Cu, Se, Cr and Ni content in the ash from an ash pond weathered for 11 years, which had been naturally colonized from the surrounding habitats by the examined species, was found to be elevated, falling in a range higher than the average values for plants. Analysis of the root and leaf tissues of the white poplar showed that concentrations of As were between 5.22-5.04 µg g-i, B between 11.81-137.45 µg g-1, Cu between 3.98- 8.34 µg g-1, Se between 0.98-3.30 µg g-1, Cr between 1.47-0.67 µg g-1, and Ni between 2.71-4.73 µg g-1 respectively, i.e. As and B concentrations in leaves fell within the toxic range, Cu and Ni fell within the normal range, while Se and Cr was in a range higher than the average concentrations of these elements in plant tissues. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) in the roots and leaves, for all the chemical elements studied, apart from B in leaves, was less than l, while the translocation factor (TF) for all the chemical elements studied apart from Cr was greater than 1. The results of this research showed that white poplar on the fly ash deposits of 'TENT A' exhibited poor phytostabiliz.ation potential,
aking this woody species highly unsuitable for the phytoremediation of this, or any other abitat, characterized by high As and B concentrations.

AB - We studies the seasonal dynamics of phenolics in leaves, litter and soil
of the dominant host tree oak (Quercus robur L.) growing with
ectomycorrhizal fungi truffles (T. macrosporum) in oak forest (Fraxino
angustifoliae-Quercetum roboris Joy. et Tomic 1979) near River Danube,
near Belgrade. In litter, the highest content of free phenolics was in
April (primordial growth period of truffles) and bound phenolics in
August (truffles ripening- start of harvest). Due to intensive
decomposition of forest litter during the vegetative growth period, free
phenolic acids increased and the bound phenolic acids decreased. There
was reduction in ratio of bound cinnamic to benzoic acids, it indicated
the microbial degradation of lignin and the transformation of cinnamic
derivatives into benzoic acid derivatives. In the top soil layer, where
the majority of truffle fruit bodies were found (28.31 kg/ha/year). the
free phenolics (direct influence on truffle growth and development)
contents were up to 58.36 mu g/g. As the mycelia and fruit bodies of
truffle grow in phenolic-rich forest soil, hence, we assumed that the
truffle is well-adapted to high phenolics content.

AB - During allelopathic investigations of interrelationships among different
plant species in their natural sites, special attention is paid to the presence of
phenolic acids (PAs) in dominant plants, plant litter and in the soil. They are
localized in all plant organs, both as free and in bound forms i.e. associated
with other compounds such as lignin (Kögel and Bochter 1985; Kögel 1986)
and polysaccharides of cell walls (Whitmare 1976). Phenols are transferred
from plants to the litter and soil by foliage and stem leaching, leaf fall, root
exudates, microbial decomposition of plants remains, (mainly the
degradation of lignin). PAs have been identified as the main phytotoxins of
some plant species (Lodhi and Rice 1971; Chou and Muller 1972).
Phytotoxins play a significant role as germination inhibitors that affect
growth of seedlings, soil nitrification and nitrifying bacteria (Lodhi and
Killingbeck 1980, Einhellig et al.,1982, Khan and Ungar, 1986). This chapter
describes the methods for extraction, detection and measurement of total
phenolics and phenolic acids in dry plant material (vegetative plant parts,
mostly leaves), plant litter and soil (organic and mineral); method of induced
chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics of photosystem II for determination of
photosynthetic efficiency; methods for chlorophyll content determination
and methods of biotests.
