AB - The brown trout is a valuable species for recreational fishing and its diet is of great interest. It feeds on
various aquatic invertebrates, but also consumes terrestrial prey, whose contribution is often unjustly
underestimated. The importance of terrestrial prey in diets of two trout populations was assessed at two
sites (April-October) with different quantity of available aquatic prey (Site 1 high, Site 2 low quantity).
Four indices of importance were used: frequency of occurrence (FO), number of prey items (AN), weight
(AW), and index of relative importance (IRI). Preference for terrestrial prey was also estimated based on
the electivity index (EI), where the availability of aquatic and terrestrial prey was expressed as their
percentage in the drift samples.
Significantly less terrestrial prey was available at Site 1 (0.39% ± 0.57%) in contrast to Site 2 (13.21% ±
10.38%), terrestrial prey was significantly more abundant in the trout diet than in the drift samples at
both sites (t test). The EI was positive for terrestrial prey, additionally FO showed that this prey was
present in 36% ± 16.65% (site 1) and in 87.55% ± 8.94% individuals (site 2), indicating a high preference for
this type of prey. The importance (IRI) of terrestrial prey was higher than expected at Site 1 (1.39% ±
1.53%; maximum 4.7% in September) and high at Site 2 (58.6% ± 23.56%; maximum 84.67% in
September). Terrestrial prey became more present in the drift and more important in the diet toward the
end of the study period, while the importance of aquatic prey decreased based on all four indices at both
sites. The correlation between the increasing importance of terrestrial prey (AN, IRI) in the diet and the
presence of aquatic prey in the drift (%) towards the end of the season was not significant (Pearson). Thus,
the positive trend in the importance of terrestrial prey may be due to their increasing availability and
simultaneous decline of large prey in the aquatic community due to the emergence of adults.
Terrestrial prey is generally larger (i.e., yielding more energy) than most aquatic prey and easily captured
due to its low mobility in the aquatic environment. In the habitat with low availability of aquatic prey,
terrestrial prey played an important role in brown trout diet. In addition, brown trout also preferred it in
the habitat rich in aquatic prey. This study shows that terrestrial prey is significant brown trout feeding
resource regardless of its general availability in the environment.

AB - This paper aims to present indicative ecological status of the Ribnica River, a tributary to the Kolubara River, based on aquatic macroinvertebrate community. On 7 selected localities a total of 123 taxa were identified. These taxa belong to 14 taxonomic groups. Macroinvertebrate community was dominated by insect groups, mainly Diptera, Trtichoptera and Ephemeroptera, while other groups are less diverse and have lower abundance. Overall water quality was moderate or better with exception of the site located between Paštrić village and Mionica, which showed deterioration in all biological quality indices. This can be explained by the presence of numerous farms in the vicinity which have a negative impact on taxa richness and composition of macroinvertebrate community.

AB - A Mediterranean synanthropic spider species, Zoropsis spinimana (Dufour, 1820), was recently found in Belgrade and recorded as a new member of Serbian fauna. Several individuals of both sexes and juveniles were caught or observed. Pregnant females and their cocoons were also observed. According to our findings, this spider has established a small population in the city. Considering that this species has been recognized as a successful colonizer and could be identified by the general public, the first “Citizen Science” approach in Serbia was applied. An invitation to participate was made via social media. The manuscript includes photos contributed from other parts of the country. This confirmed our suspicion that Z. spinimana is to be found in more than one place in Serbia, which requires further investigation. This paper aims to report this species as a new member of the national and synanthropic fauna and to present the benefit of using “Citizen Science” data.

AB - The aim of our study was to detect actual distributions of oligochaete species, and to identify their ecological differentiation with respect to environmental factors, altitude, temperature, Oxygen concentration, conductivity, total organic Carbon, and water body type. Although widespread, differentiation of oligochaeta communities in four waterbody types and altitudinal groups can be observed through alpha and beta diversity. Differentiation of oligochaete communities was analysed using MANOVA, while the ecological preferences of species were presented with logistic Gaussian regression analyses. The highest number of oligochaeta species was recorded in oligochaete communities in medium and large rivers. Total beta diversity decreased with decreasing of waterbody size, increasing of substrate size, river flow velocity, as well as altitude. Communities from small mountain rivers and streams and large and medium rivers with larger substrate were separated from other oligochaete communities. When coarser substrate is prevalent in smaller and medium rivers, a domination of a certain family was observed: Lumbriculidae (> 800 m a.s.l.), Propapidae and Enchytraeidae (500-800 m) and Naididae (<500 m a.s.l.). It is clear that common oligochaeta species, with significantly overlapping ranges in running waters in Serbia, still show a clear grouping with respect to preference for certain types of waterbodies.

AB - Benthic diatoms of the Ribnica River situated in Valjevo karst area were not studied so far. The objective of this paper is to provide base data on diatom community of the Ribnica River, through diversity, abundance, diatom ecological guilds, and to estimate its preliminary ecological status according to national regulations. Phytobenthos sampling and laboratory work was done by national standards. Analysis of diatom community was based on identification, enumeration, and classification into ecological guilds. Indicative ecological status was assessed according to IPS and CEE diatom indices. At the Ribnica River in total 52 diatom taxa were recorded, and also high taxa richness at each locality. The most frequent and numerous were diatoms Achnanthidium minutissimum, A. pyrenaicum and Encyonopsis subminuta. Low profile ecological guild, typical for fast flowing streams with lower nutrient concentrations was dominant in the Ribnica River. Diatom indices IPS and CEE reviled excellent ecological status.

AB - The aim of this study is to present the principal features of macroinvertebrate fauna along Serbian stretch of the Danube River (588 km that belongs to middle and partly lower Danube) and its main tributaries, revealed as a part of the Joint Danube Survey 4 (JDS4). The research was carried out in 2019 at 12 locations (five at the Danube and seven at tributaries – the Tisa, Sava, Velika Morava and Timok Rivers). To collect confident information, different sampling techniques were used: Kick and Sweep, multihabitat sampling, Deep-Water Dredging and free diving for mussel collection. A total of 202 macroinvertebrate taxa were identified, with insects as the most diverse component (114 taxa), followed by Mollusca and Annelida (32 taxa each), and Crustacea (20 taxa). Among insects Diptera, family Chironomidae was the most diverse (65 species). In respect to abundance, Mollusca was found to be dominant group with share of 37.46% of the total community, followed by Annelida (25.04%), Crustacea (19.83%), and insects with 17.63%. Other groups were represented with less than 1% participation. As expected in fluvial type rivers, potamophilous species dominate in macroinvertebrate community. Active filter feeders and gatherers/collectors are principal components in respect to feeding preference in investigated rivers which is a typical situation for the river type. Our study revealed presence of rare and protected taxa such as Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788 and Theodoxus transversalis (Pfeiffer, 1828), but also presence of 22 alien taxa, of which 14 are characterized as invasive in this stretch. This result indicate that macroinvertebrate community is dynamic and that it deserves persistent screening.

AB - The aim of this study was to identify taxa richness of benthic macroinvertebrates region of the Neretva River, which is under the potential impact of human activities. The "Neretva Science Week" study area is located in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina and it covers the upper region of the Neretva River, between its confluence with the Krupa River and the city of Konjic. In the summer 2022, aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected from a total of nine sites: seven sites on the Neretva River and two on its tributary Krupa River. Kick and Sweep hand net sampling was performed following the EN 27828:1994 standard. In total, 101 taxa belonging to 13 taxonomic groups were recorded. Based on our results, Diptera and Ephemeroptera were most taxa rich (17 and 18 taxa, respectively) and most abundant taxa (with 27.19% and 34.79% of collected individuals, respectively), followed by Trichoptera (24 taxa; 12.98% of collected individuals) and Plecoptera (6 taxa, 15.95% of collected individuals) At the lower taxonomic level, the most abundant taxa were mayfly Ecdyonurus alpinus Hefti, Tomka & Zurwerra, 1987 and Simuliidae (Diptera) larvae. Overall, our results indicate high benthic macroinvertebrate taxa richness, and domination of insect orders that typically occur in mountain rivers, such as the upper reaches of the Neretva River. In order to preserve the pristine character of the river, as well as its biota, it is essential to maintain the near-natural state.

AB - Fish production is a direct measure of habitat quality. Physical characteristics of the habitat, as well as the quality and quantity of available food, can promote or slow the fish growth. Brown trout populations were monitored from April to October (2015) at three study sites with different habitat characteristics. Brown trout growth parameters (biomass, production, overall growth quality) and environmental parameters (water conductivity, suspended particles, prey biomass, prey diversity, pH, dissolved oxygen, etc.) were correlated to examine their relationship (CCA). One of the sites (Belosavac), the most productive, had high conductivity and was rich in prey, with domination of Gammaridae, but with low prey diversity and evenness. The other two sites (Rasina and Lomnica) had higher prey diversity and evenness but significantly lower prey abundance, with one of the two sites (Lomnica) having very low water conductivity and suspended particles concentration and the lowest prey abundance. High brown trout biomass and production were found to be positively correlated with high water conductivity, amount of suspended particles, prey abundance and diversity. Overall growth quality was negatively correlated with high prey diversity and evenness found at a site with very low prey abundance. According to this study, high water conductivity, as found in calcareous streams, promotes high prey production and consequently high trout production, while high prey diversity does not positively affect trout production when its abundance is low.

AB - Urban waters are often neglected in biodiversity research; nonetheless, the number of
aquatic microhabitats present in a city and the surrounding urban area is impressive. Twenty-two
waterbodies in the Belgrade functional urban area (FUA) were investigated for faunistic and diversity
patterns and to assess the effects of environmental factors on the differentiation of Chironomidae
assemblages. A total of 66 chironomid taxa within four subfamilies was identified. Water quality
at the studied sites, expressed by the water pollution index (WPI), varied significantly. K-means
clustering gave four homogenous groups of chironomid assemblages, which showed clear preferences
to specific habitat conditions and tolerance to anthropogenic pressures. These groups had high values
of alpha and beta diversity components. The main component of beta diversity was species turnover.
Waterbody type, water temperature, pH, nutrients and overall pollution were the most important
factors influencing the distribution and composition of chironomid assemblages, which revealed
clear preferences of each assemblage type to the category of waterbody type and tolerances to
environmental pressures.

AB - Stone crayfish, an endangered and protected species in Republic of Serbia, inhabits mountain areas of
the country. The knowledge and attitude of children from two primary schools (Pirot and Bosilegrad)
towards this species was tested. Two surveys with the same questionnaire were conducted. The first
one was held at the end of the 6th grade, and the second was conducted a year later. The second
survey has shown moderate increase in children's knowledge. To better protect and conserve rare and
endangered taxa it is necessary to raise awareness of the public, particularly in the areas where these
species are present. Attitudes, values, behaviour, knowledge of citizen and especially young
generations form a good basis for the protection and sustainable development planning in local
community.

AB - This paper points out the advantages of using the Water Pollution Index (WPI) in water quality assessment of surface waters, which can include a large number of different parameters (physical, chemical, microbiological and biological). It is often difficult to interpret the results when numerous quality elements are analyzed, because each of them can individually indicate a different quality class, and the assessment is usually given according to the least favorable result. The WPI overcomes this problem by providing a single assessment score that can be effectively used as a unit of measure for environmental assessment in accordance with the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). More frequent use of this index could provide an assessment system specific to the watercourse type and stressor.

AB - This paper presented indicative ecological status assessment of four investigated streams of Rogozna Mountain based on aquatic macroinvertebrate community. A total number of 116 taxa from 16 taxa groups were identified at 9 selected localities within the study area. The aquatic insects were the most dominant group in the benthic community in respect to taxa richness, while the rest of the community consisted of taxa groups with lower participation. General conclusion is that the degree of organic pollution of the surveyed streams is low and indicative ecological status of streams in the study area, based on aquatic macroinvertebrates community, could be assessed as good to moderate.

AB - The aim of this paper was to present preliminary results of aquatic ecosystems biodiversity within target area on the mountain Rogozna, which are under the potential impact of mining activities.
Rogozna is a mountain in southwest part of Serbia, situated in a triangle composed of the upper and central stretches of the Ibar and the Raška River, 12 km from Novi Pazar.
The watercourses in the study area are represented by small hilly-mountainous streams. Data were collected during April and September 2021 at 9 localities at selected streams: Barska reka, Karavansalijska reka, Kašaljska reka and Netvički potok. Karavansalijska and Kašaljska reka are draining Ibar through Banjska and Barska reka, while Netvički potok drains Raška through the Tranavska reka.
Analyses of aquatic biota included benthic algae and macroinvertebrates. The basic characteristics of each locality have been collected using specific protocols (adapted AQEM protocol, 2002). Qualitative analysis of benthic diatoms revealed a total of 49 taxa, belonging to 26 genera. The most frequent taxa of studied watercourses were also the most abundant, such as Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kützing) Czarnecki, Meridion circulare (Greville) C.A. Agardh and Navicula lanceolata (Agardh) Ehrenberg. In total 116 macroinvertebrate taxa from 16 taxa groups were recorded within the study area. Analysis of the macroinvertebrates fauna indicated that the most abundant components of the community were Diptera (31.06 %) and Plecoptera (29.73%). The most abundant species in the community were Gammarus pulex (Linnaeus, 1758) and Protonemura montana Kimmins, 1941.
Overall, results based on benthic diatom and macroinvertebrate communities of mountain Rogozna watercourses showed that diversity and taxa distribution are typical for the hilly-mountainous streams, and indicate absence of pollution.

AB - During the „Joint Danube Survey 4“ (JDS4) research program, performed in the first weeks of July 2019, Serbian national team carried out Multi-Habitat Sampling as a standardized WFD sampling method for the ecological status assessment (AQEM Consortium, 2002). Samples of aquatic macroinvertebrates were taken from 12 sites along Serbian stretch of the Danube River, 5 on the Danube River and 7 on its tributaries. Indicative Status Assessment (ISA) was performed using aquatic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators and taking into consideration community structure and composition. In total, 91 taxa belonging to 19 higher taxonomic groups were found, 57 of them were found in the Danube River and 62 taxa in the tributaries. Main groups in the benthic community in respect to taxa richness were Annelida (40,78%), Mollusca (25,60%), Crustacea (16,80%) and Insecta (15,92%). The most abundant taxa were Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparede, 1862 and Lithoglyphus naticoides (Pfeiffer, 1828). Selected metrics used for the ISA, according to national legislation, were obtained through ASTERICS software (AQEM, 2002). ISA of Serbian stretch of the Danube River and its tributaries, which belong to the large lowland rivers, could be assessed as moderate (class III) to bad status (class V). Based on bentic macroinvertebrates community, it is concluded that investigated localities are primarily under the influence of moderate organic pollution as well as various types of hydromorphological pressures.

AB - The Balkan Peninsula is known as a biodiversity hotspot. This area is characterized by diverse climate, orographic and hydrological conditions which represent a good basis for the diversity of flora and fauna. The fauna of leeches (Hirudinea) is no exception. The majority of European species are recorded in this area, many of which are endemic to the Balkans. Contemporary studies have described several species new to the science, and a few subspecies have been risen to the species level after detailed investigation (Croatobranchus maestrovi, Dina krasensis, D. dinarica, D. minuoculata, D. sketi, D. prokletijaca, Trocheta dalmatina, Glossiphonia balcanica). The area of Dinaric Alps (Karst) with its springs, streams and glacial lakes are home to almost all of these newly described species but also other common European species. These habitats are under various anthropogenic pressure, springs are driven in to pipes for irrigation or for human use, and on many small rivers mini hydro-power plants are being built which further endanger these fragile habitats and animal communities that inhabit them. The Mediterranean medicinal leech (H. verbana) was exported in large numbers through history form the area of Balkan Peninsula to Western Europe for medicinal use. Today, species of medicinal leeches are under numerous international and national protection acts and its trade and commercial use is very limited or prohibited. The main threat is the destruction and deterioration of suitable habitats, mainly wetland areas, marshes and ponds in the flood zones of rivers.

AB - The present pilot study tested and validated the use of the ‘Invasive Alien Species in Europe’ smartphone app (IASapp) in the Lower Danube Region. The study was conducted in three stages: (1) Testing the effectiveness of the app in Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia by organizing information and field testing campaigns; (2) Improving and extending the functionality of the app and developing a list of the invasive alien species (IAS) of concern to the Danube River Basin (DRB); and (3) Testing the updated app during the Joint Danube Survey 4 campaign. Overall, 13 campaigns were carried out, during which seven aquatic IAS of EU concern and nine IAS relevant to the DRB were recorded. Currently, the developed new functionality of IASapp allows the recording of 64 IAS of DRB concern. The updated IASapp has an important role in increasing public awareness on IAS issues, as well as in enlarging the participation and output of citizen science in the IAS early detection, monitoring and reporting in the DRB. Therefore, the constant communication with existing stakeholder groups and establishment of new citizen science groups is crucial for increasing the effectiveness of using the IASapp in the Danube Region and tackling the IAS issues.

AB - During the monitoring of surface water quality of the city of Belgrade, four individuals of B. moogi were collected in the PKB canal. Checklists of leeches of Serbia mention no records of this leech. Grosser et al. (2015) suspect its presence since it was recorded in nearby regions (Hungary, Austria, and the Danube River). This record is an important contribution to the knowledge on the biology of B. moogi and also to the knowledge of the fauna of leeches of both Serbia and the region.

AB - Vrsta Dina lineata (Müller, 1774) naseljava slatkovodne ekosisteme zapadnog Palearktika, od
Velike Britanije do Irana.
AB - The species Dina lineata (Müller, 1774) inhabits freshwater habitats of western Palearctic
from Great Britain to Iran. Predaceous leeches from the suborder Erpobdelliformes show a
degree of morphological variability which leads to description of several subspecies. Boris
Sket described three subspecies of D. lineata on the Balkan Peninsula (D. l. dinarica, D. l.
lacustris, D. l. montana) and suspected presence of nominotypical subspecies D. lineata
lineata, which was confirmed by recent studies. On the Balkan Peninsula, predominantly on
the Dinaric Alps, several new species in the genus Dina were recently described (D.
minuoculata, D. prokletiaka, D. sketi). These species show preference to same habitats as
Balkan subspecies of D. lineata and relatively small morphological differences.
Phylogenetical relations between subspecies of D. lineata are not clear. Contemporary
molecular- genetic analyses enable clarification of these relations. The aim of this study is to
determine the phylogenetic and phylogeographic relations between subspecies of D. lineata
as well as their relations with other species in the genus Dina. The study incorporates large
area from the Sava River in the northwest to Macedonia in the southeast. Three subspecies of
D. lineata were recorded during the field work. D. l. dinarica was the most frequent, D. l.
lineata was recorded on few localities in Serbia and D. l. montana was collected on the
Komovi mountain (Montenegro). Analyses of phylogenetic relations were conducted on the
sequences of mitochondrial DNA that code for cytochrome oxydase I (COI). The results show
that D. l. dinarica could be treated as separate species D. dinarica. This taxon shows
significant phylogeographical variability. Analyses have shown grouping of haplotypes based
on geographical origin of populations. Haplotypes from Serbia were grouped in one group,
those from Bosnia and Herzegovina in to second and third group was comprised of haplotypes
from Montenegro. Great genetic variability may indicate potential hidden speciation within D.
dinarica species.

abstract = "Vrsta Dina lineata (Müller, 1774) naseljava slatkovodne ekosisteme zapadnog Palearktika, od
Velike Britanije do Irana.
raznovrsnost može ukazati i na potencijalno skrivenu specijaciju u okviru vrste D. dinarica., The species Dina lineata (Müller, 1774) inhabits freshwater habitats of western Palearctic
from Great Britain to Iran.

AB - The Balkan Peninsula is an important biodiversity hotspot, with leech fauna significantly contributing to the wealth of species of the region. The taxa from the suborder Erpobdelliformes are numerous and a large share of these are endemic. Three most diverse genera are Erpobdella, Dina and Trocheta. Contemporary genetic studies have shown that these are not monophyletic. The aims of this study were to review the fauna of Erpobdelliformes of the western Balkans, to validate the taxonomic characters by molecular analyses, to determine the phylogenetic relations of taxa, and to examine the ecological preferences of the species and their usefulness in biomonitoring. Localities from the Danube and the Sava Rivers in the north to the Prespa and the Dojran Lakes in the south were investigated. Identification was based on somite segmentation, the positions of sexual openings, and on the shape and size of the genital atrium and testisacs. The reliability of identification of taxa was performed at the molecular level through analysis of the COI gene. Nine species were detected. The species Dina lineata (Müller, 1774) was represented with three subspecies (D. lineata lineata (Müller, 1774), D. lineata dinarica Sket, 1968 and Dina lineata montana Sket, 1968). The most frequent taxa were D. lineata dinarica, Erpobdella octoculata (L. 1758) and E. vinlensis (Liskewitz, 1925), which despite overlapping distributions displayed clear differentiation in their ecological preferences. One invasive species from the family Salifidae, Barbronia weberi (R. Blanchard, 1897) was detected. The constructed phylogenetic tree revealed distinct branches that correspond to each of the identified taxa. The fauna of Erpobdelliformes is rich. Three taxa exhibit wide areas of distribution and a high frequency of occurrence, while other taxa are rare. The hydromorphological properties and position of water bodies have the largest impact on the distribution of leeches. Frequently recorded taxa can be used as good bioindicators of water quality. Traditional classification of the family Erpobdellidae is valid for the Balkan fauna. Dina lineata dinarica is a morphologically and phylogenetically differentiated taxon from other taxa in D. lineata and should be treated as a separate species, D. dinarica.
Salifidae).

AB - This study is the result of extensive investigations of leeches on the Balkan Peninsula. Our aim was to detect actual and potential (modeled) distributions of common Erpobdellidae species, and to identify their ecological differentiation with respect to the altitudinal and waterbody type gradient. Although widespread, these species rarely live together. Intense competition is avoided by preferences for different types of habitats. This was confirmed by Pearson correlation analyses that yielded negative results. Differentiation of these species was clarified by the results of logistic Gaussian regression analyses. While Erpobdella octoculata and Dina lineata have a similar distribution along the altitudinal gradient, they prefer different waterbody types. Erpobdella vilnensis prefers higher altitudes than the other two species. Its preferred habitats are smaller rivers and streams located at altitudes from 400 to 1000 m a.s.l. Although present in all waterbody types, large lowland rivers and standing waterbodies are the preferred habitats of E. octoculata. Fast-flowing springs and streams are mostly inhabited by D. lineata. While the distribution of the species overlaps to a large degree, the ecological preferences of species differ significantly and thus they can be used as confident typological descriptors and indicators of ecological status.
