The first sheet named 'RDC' contains data on relative deterrence coefficients of spongy moth larvae exposed to three different concentrations of Calocedrus decurrens and Cupressus arizonica essential oils. The second sheet named 'ADC' contains data on absolute deterrence coefficients of spongy moth larvae exposed to three different concentrations of Calocedrus decurrens and Cupressus arizonica essential oils. The third sheet named 'RCR' contains data on the relative consumption rate of spongy moth larvae exposed to three different concentrations of Calocedrus decurrens and Cupressus arizonica essential oils, and control treatment. AB  - In this study, the chemical composition, antioxidant, and hypoglycemic activity of Rosa arvensis Huds. leaves and fruits collected from Zlatibor, Željin, Veliki Krš mountains and Petnica village (Serbia) were analysed. Phenolic and vitamin profiles, as well as in vitro antioxidant potential and enzyme inhibitory activity on α-amylase and α-glucosidase, were studied. Phytochemical analysis showed higher phenolic content in leaf extracts than in those obtained from fruits. Gallic, chlorogenic and syringic acids were the most abundant phenolic acids, while catechin was the major flavonoid compound. Furthermore, the highest level of α-tocopherol (1.94 mg/100 g fw) in achenes and ascorbic acid (9.60 mg/100 g fw) in hypanthium were quantified in the fruits sampled on the Veliki Krš Mt. High antioxidant capacity was observed for the leaf extracts. It was highly correlated with their chemical composition and primarily referred to the catechin content (r > 0.95, p < 0.01), while the quinic acid had the opposite effect (r > −0.97, p < 0.01). Leaf extracts also showed good α-glucosidase and moderate α-amylase inhibitory potential in contrast to hypanthium and achenes extracts with lower antidiabetic activity. The high phenolic content and noted antioxidative potential were strongly correlated with the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (r > 0.80, p < 0.01), while the α-amylase inhibition was only moderately correlated with those compounds (r > 0.49, p < 0.01). Among the tested R. arvensis samples, those from Zlatibor Mt. contained the highest amount of target compounds and expressed the highest biological activity. The obtained results suggest that R. arvensis extracts present a new source of bioactive compounds that could be implemented as novel food ingredients.

Terpene relationships among some soft and hard pine species

AB  - In this study we have reported the chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from the needles of twelve Pinus taxa, belonging to the subgenera Pinus (sections Pinus and Trifoliae) and Strobus (sect. Quinquefoliae). Monoterpenes dominated over sesquiterpenes in most of the investigated taxa of both subgenera, except in representatives of the subsection Pinaster, subgenus Pinus. alpha-Pinene was the most abundant terpene in eight pines, but other dominant terpenes were found in some taxa -trans-caryophyllene, germacrene D, abietadiene and beta-pinene. In the subsect. Pinaster, the most dominant compounds varied from species to species. In addition, P. halepensis and P. pinaster had the highest percentage of diterpenes, while P. heldreichii was the richest in germacrene D. In the PCA and cluster analyses, three species from the subsect. Pinaster emerged as the most distant: P. halepensis, P. pinaster, and P. heldreichii. In addition, the possible taxonomic implications of the terpene profile in the analysed Pinus taxa were also discussed.
AB  - 48 |vol. 46 (1) U ovom proučavanju objavili smo hemijski sastav etarskih ulja dobijenih iz iglica 12 taksona roda Pinus, koji pripadaju podrodovima Pinus (sekcije Pinus i Trifoliae) i Strobus (sekcija Quinquefoliae). U većini istraživanih taksona monoterpeni dominiraju nad seskviterpenima kod oba podroda, osim kod uzoraka podsekcije Pinaster podroda Pinus. α-Pinen je najobilniji kod 8 borova, ali kod nekih taksona dominantni su trans-kariofilen, germakren D, abietadien i β-pinen. U subcekciji Pinaster dominantne komponente variraju od vrste do vrste. Nadalje, P. ha- lepensis i P. pinaster imaju najveći procenat diterpena, dok je P. heldreichii najbogatiji u germakrenu D. U PCA i klaster analizama pokazale su se najudaljenije tri vrste subsekcije Pinaster: P. halepensis, P. pinaster i P. heldreichii. Nadalje, u analiziranim vrstama roda Pinus diskutovane su moguće taksonomske implikacije terpenskog profila.

Prunus spinosa L. leaf extracts: polyphenol profile and bioactivities

AB  - Prunus spinosa leaf extracts in solvents of different polarity (water, ethanol and acetone), their phenol, flavonoid and anthocyanin contents and biological properties were the object of this study. The richest in phenols as well as in flavonoids was acetone extract with 181.19 mg GAE and 80.10 mg QE per gram of dry extract, respectively. Moreover, the quantity of anthocyanins obtained by HPLC analysis was also the highest in acetone sample. Examined samples possessed antioxidant properties evaluated through four in vitro assays (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and TRC). The acetone extract was proved to be the best antioxidant among tested samples, which could be ascribed to polyphenols, especially anthocyanins. The aqueous and the ethanol extract exhibited antibacterial effects, being particularly active against B. cereus and E. cloacae. T. viride, P. funiculosum, P. ochrochloron, P. verrucosum var. cyclopium were the most susceptible among fungal microorganisms examined. Both, the aqueous and the ethanol extract expressed inhibitory activity towards enzymes linked to diabetes mellitus type II. Additionally, the ethanol extract showed significantly higher potential in inhibiting α-glucosidase than the drug used as the positive control. Furthermore, the aqueous sample revealed antitumor effects on following malignant cell lines: HeLa, K562 and MDA-MB-453. The results presented herein suggest that P. spinosa leaves should be considered as a natural source of bioactive compounds with potential application in phytopharmacy and food industry.

AB  - Pear (Pyrus communis L.) is consumed as fresh fruit, in numerous food products, and also used as a traditional remedy in various countries, including Serbia. In search of bioactive compounds, six traditional pear varieties (‘Vidovača’, ‘Lubeničarka’, ‘Karamanka’, ‘Jeribasma’, ‘Lončara’, ‘Takiša’) and wild pear from Serbia were investigated and compared with a commercial variety (‘Williams Bartlett’). The aim of this study was to determine the total phenolic and flavonoid contents, phenolic composition, antioxidant capacity, and antineurodegenerative activities of methanolic extracts of peel, flesh, and mixed peel and flesh of pear fruits. Phenolic composition of extracts was determined with HPLC-DAD, while the antioxidant activity of extracts was evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Bearing in mind that oxidative stress is closely linked to neurodegeneration, the antineurodegenerative potential of the extracts was assessed by the inhibition of acetycholineserase (AChE) and tyrosinase (TYR) activities. The extracts of traditional varieties, particularly peel extracts, had a high content of phenolics, as well as significant antioxidant and moderate antineurodegenerative potential, compared to the commercial variety. The highest contents of total flavonoids and individual compounds, such as arbutin and chlorogenic acid, as well as the strongest antioxidant and TYR inhibitory activities were reported for the ‘Takiša’ peel extract. The performed analyses have revealed that fruits of traditional Serbian pear varieties are rich in bioactive components and could be used as functional food and for possible nutraceutical applications, to prevent diseases induced by oxidative stress.

AB  - In this study, we examined Salvia amplexicaulis Lam., S. jurisicii Košanin and S. ringens Sibth. & Sm. collected in the Republic of North Macedonia, which are for the first time subjected to detailed micromorphological and structural analysis using light and scanning electron microscopy. The nutlets and mucilage were additionally subjected to spectroscopic analysis using Raman and Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. The anatomical structure of stems and leaves is described and compared. The stems, leaves and calyces bear numerous one- and multi-cellular nonglandular trichomes, and various peltate, capitate and digitiform glandular trichomes. The nutlets differ in size and shape, as well as in myxocarpy. The nutlets predominantly contained α-linolenic and linoleic acid, whereas the mucilages are primarily formed of polysaccharides. The results obtained in this study confirmed the importance of micromorphological and anatomical analysis of Salvia L. spp. plant parts, particularly trichomes and nutlets, and hence contributing to the knowledge about the variety of micromorphological characteristics within the genus Salvia L.

Examination of the polyphenol content and bioactivities of Prunus spinosa L. fruit extracts

AB  - We investigated the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and the anthocyanin profiles in aqueous, ethanol and acetone extracts of Prunus spinosa (Rosaceae) fruit, and their antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic and antitumor properties. The contribution of polyphenol contents to the bioactivity of the extracts was calculated and observed through Pearson’s coefficient of correlation. The acetone extract was the richest in phenols and anthocyanins and the ethanol extract in flavonoids. Cyanidin was the most abundant anthocyanin compound in all examined extracts. The ethanol extract showed the most promising antioxidant activity in DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays. Tested bacteria were more affected by the ethanol than by the aqueous extract. Both the ethanol and aqueous extracts exhibited potential antidiabetic effects, observed as inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase, enzymes linked with diabetes mellitus type II. The ethanol extract was a potent α-glucosidase-inhibitor with a significantly lower IC50 value than the positive control, glucobay, used to treat diabetes mellitus type II. Neither the ethanol nor the aqueous extracts had any effects on tested human malignant cell lines. Our results indicate that the ethanol extract showed the most pronounced in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, and a potential antidiabetic activity, which can be ascribed to its high flavonoid content. Our results indicate that research of compounds, particularly of flavonoids present in the ethanol extract and their anti-diabetic properties should be examined further.

AB  - The variability of volatiles isolated from twigs by the static headspace (HS) method in seven natural populations of Picea omorika from Serbia was investigated for the first time. In the overall chemical profile, monoterpenes strongly dominated hydrocarbons as the most volatile compounds (95.7%). The dominant compounds were ?-pinene (29.5 %), ?-pinene (25.7%) and myrcene (13.0%), totaling 68.2% of the volatiles on average. The following nine volatiles were found to be present in medium-to-high amounts (0.5-10%): tricyclene, camphene, ?-phellandrene, ?-3-carene, p-cymene, ?-phellandrene, terpinolene, (E)-caryophyllene, and germacrene D. Out of the 78 volatiles detected, the six most abundant (?-pinene, ?-pinene, myrcene, ?-3-carene, ?-phellandrene and camphene) were selected for principle component analysis (PCA) and cluster analyses (CA). PCA revealed a high degree of similarity between populations, while CA showed a degree of separation of two populations from the others. The presented results are in agreement with previous phytochemical and molecular analyses of this species that confirm high variability in both specialized metabolites and genetic markers.

AB  - The physiological imbalance between the production and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), known as oxidative stress, is responsible for developing and progression of a plethora of diseases – cancer, among others. Since plants are recognized as potential antioxidant agents, the aim of this study was to chemically characterize ethanolic extracts of 18 species from Lamiaceae family using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), followed by testing the antioxidant activity using ABTS assay. Biocompatibility of the investigated extracts was assessed by MTT assay on normal human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5). Finally, antiproliferative activity was evaluated using MTT assay on human colorectal cancer (HCT-116) cell line, while the effects of extracts on superoxide anion radical (O2•-) production were tested using NBT assay. Melissa officinalis, Mentha piperita, Origanum majorana, O. vulgare, and Thymus vulgaris showed the highest antioxidant activity against ABTS radicals. LC-MS analysis indicated that these extracts mostly contain caffeic, protocatechuic and p-coumaric acids. The extracts were biocompatible with MRC-5 cell line. Interestingly, Lavandula angustifolia and Ocimum basilicum extracts, which were less active against ABTS radicals, showed a significant antiproliferative effect against HCT-116. Moreover, L. angustifolia and T. vulgaris extracts significantly stimulated the production of O2•- in HCT-116, indicating potential antitumor activity. The extracts that expressed antiproliferative effect and stimulated ROS production contain higher amounts of rosmarinic, caffeic and chlorogenic acids, naringin, luteolin, apigenin and cirsimaritin, indicating that some of them, or more probably their synergistic effects, are responsible for the extracts’ ability to moderate the production of ROS in HCT-116 cells.

abstract = "The physiological imbalance between the production and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), known as oxidative stress, is responsible for developing and progression of a plethora of diseases – cancer, among others. Since plants are recognized as potential antioxidant agents, the aim of this study was to chemically characterize ethanolic extracts of 18 species from Lamiaceae family using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), followed by testing the antioxidant activity using ABTS assay. Biocompatibility of the investigated extracts was assessed by MTT assay on normal human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5). Finally, antiproliferative activity was evaluated using MTT assay on human colorectal cancer (HCT-116) cell line, while the effects of extracts on superoxide anion radical (O2•-) production were tested using NBT assay. Melissa officinalis, Mentha piperita, Origanum majorana, O. vulgare, and Thymus vulgaris showed the highest antioxidant activity against ABTS radicals. LC-MS analysis indicated that these extracts mostly contain caffeic, protocatechuic and p-coumaric acids. The extracts were biocompatible with MRC-5 cell line. Interestingly, Lavandula angustifolia and Ocimum basilicum extracts, which were less active against ABTS radicals, showed a significant antiproliferative effect against HCT-116. Moreover, L. angustifolia and T. vulgaris extracts significantly stimulated the production of O2•- in HCT-116, indicating potential antitumor activity. The extracts that expressed antiproliferative effect and stimulated ROS production contain higher amounts of rosmarinic, caffeic and chlorogenic acids, naringin, luteolin, apigenin and cirsimaritin, indicating that some of them, or more probably their synergistic effects, are responsible for the extracts’ ability to moderate the production of ROS in HCT-116 cells.",

Variability of needle morpho-anatomy of natural pinus heldreichii populations from scardo-pindic mountains

AB  - Eight morpho-anatomical properties of two-year-old needles of Pinus heldreichii (Bosnian pine) from the Scardo-Pindic mountain massif in Serbia (Kosovo, Mt. Ošljak) and North Macedonia (Mt. Gali.ica) were investigated. All measured characteristics, except for needle length, were inspected on mid-needle cross-section. Cross-sections were obtained with razorblade, while measurements were performed with Leica-Gallen III light microscope. The mean values of the analyzed characters were as follows: 5.91 cm (needle length), 1.35 mm (needle width), 0.85 mm (needle thickness), 25.05 μm (cuticle + epidermis thickness), 69.90 μm (height of hypodermal cells), 21.76 μm (resin duct diameter), 3.4 (number of hypodermis layers), and 3.6 (number of resin ducts). P. heldreichii needles also had 2-5 hypodermis layers and 0-12 resin ducts. The highest variation was in the number of resin ducts (CV=27%). In comparison with previously investigated needles from the Dinaric mountains, P. heldreichii needles from the Scardo-Pindic massif were shorter and had a thicker layer of hypodermis. PCA and CA visualize partial segregation of P. heldreichii populations between the two mountain massifs.

Diverzitet vrste Fraxinus ornus iz Srbije i Crne Gore procenjena RAPD metodom

AB  - PCR-RAPD markers revealed individual variation in F. ornus. A total of 122 fragments were amplified using 7 primers and of these 97 fragments were polymorphic. The percentage of polymorphic loci was between 53.3% and 74.6% with an average of 63.1%. The mean gene diversity for all populations was 0.30 and the mean Shannon's index was 0.44. Of the total genetic variation 87% was intra-population whilst 13% was inter-population. The Mantel test revealed significant correlation between genetic and geographical distance matrice. Results herein represent the first use of molecular genetic (DNA) markers to characterize genetic variation in F. ornus populations. The partition of total genetic variance indicates a relatively restricted population differentiation as expected in outcrossing species. Present and future information on genetic structure and variability in F. ornus needs to be incorporated into strategies for the preservation of genetic resources of tree species.
AB  - U radu su korišćeni PCR-RAPD markeri radi procene individualnih varijacija kod vrste F. ornus. Ukupno 122 fragmenta je amplificirano korišćenjem 7 prajmera, i među njima je bilo 97 polimorfnih fragmenata. Procenat polimorfnih lokusa se kretao između 53.3% i 74.6% sa prosečnom vrednošću od 63.1%. Srednji diverzitet gena za sve ispitivane populacije je iznosio 0.30, dok je srednji Shannon's index imao vrednost 0.44. Od totalne genetičke varijabilnosti 87% pripada intra-populacionoj varijabilnost, a 13% inter-populacionoj. Mantel test je pokazao značajne korelacije između matrica genetičke i geografske distance. Rezultati ovog rada predstavljaju prvu upotrebu molekularno genetičkih (DNA) markera u cilju određivanja genetičke varijabilnosti populacija F. ornus. Odnosi unutar ukupne genetičke varijabilnosti ukazuju na relativno ograničenu populacionu diferencijacije u odnosu na vrednosti koje su očekivane kod stranooplodne vrste. Na osnovu ovih kao i budućih informacija koje se odnose na genetičku strukturu i varijabilnost vrste F. ornus potrebno je kreirati strategije za očuvanje genetičkih resursa drvenastih vrsta.

AB  - Chemical composition and antifungal activities of essential oil of Hyssopus officinalis L. and its component β-pinene were done in this paper using macrodilution and microdilution methods. Minimum inhibitory and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MIC and MFC) in ethanol and Tween were determined. Oil and component were investigated against 12 phyto-, animal- and human pathogens; Aspergillus niger, A. ochraceus, A. versicolor, A. flavus, A. terreus, Alternaria alternata, Penicillium ochrochloron, P. funiculosum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Trichoderma viride, Fusarium tricinctum, Phomopsis helianthi. In essential oil of H. officinalis 27 components were identified (91.70% of total oil). The major compounds were isopinocamphone (43.29%), trans-pinocamphone (16.79%) and β-pinene (16.31%). The essential oil showed strong antifungal activity, with MIC of 2.5 to 3.5 ml/ml in ethanol and Tween. MIC were almost the same in micro- and macrodilution methods, except for Penicillium species where oil dissolved in Tween showed lower MIC. MFC were the same as in macrodilution method. In comparation with bifonazole, essential oil showed much better antifungal potential. .
AB  - U radu je anliziran hemijski sastav etarskog ulja vrste Hyssopus officinalis i antifungalna aktivnost ukupnog ulja i dominantne komponente β-pinena korišćenjem mikro- i makrodilucione metode. Određivane su minimalne inhibitorne i minimalne fungicidne koncentracije (MIC i MFC) u etanolu i Tween-u. Ispitivana jedinjenja testirana su na 12 vrsta biljnih, životinjskih i humanih patogena: Aspergillus niger, A. ochraceus, A. versicolor, A. flavus, A. terreus, Alternaria alternata, Penicillium ochrochloron, P. funiculosum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Trichoderma viride, Fusarium tricinctum, Phomopsis helianthi. U etarskom ulju izopa identifikovano je 27 komponenti što predstavlja 91.70% ulja. Dominantne komponente su izopinokamfon (43,29%), trans-pinokamfon (16,79%) i β-pinen (16,31%). Etarsko ulje izopa je pokazalo dobru antifungalnu aktivnost, sa MIC od 2,5 do 3,5 ml/ml u etanolu i Tween-u. U mikrodilucionoj metodi MIC su uglavnom iste kao i u makrodilucionoj, sem za vrste roda Penicillium, kada je ulje rastvoreno u Tween-u (MIC su manje za 0,5 ml/ml). MFC su iste kao MIC u makrodilucionoj metodi. U odnosu na bifonazol, etarsko ulje izopa poseduje veoma jak antifungalni potencijal. .
