A dicey situation: capture behaviours in free‑ranging dice snakes

AB  - When captured by a predator, the prey’s options for escape decrease dramatically; however, some species, such as dice snakes, display a wide variety of behaviours in order to escape. We explored how factors such as locality, body temperature, body size, sex, reproductive status (i.e. gravid vs. non-gravid), presence and state of injuries, and the presence of food affect the occurrence of behavioural displays in a capture situation within and among four free-ranging populations of dice snakes, Natrix tessellata (Colubridae). Our study shows that dice snakes regularly hiss, discharge their cloacal glands, and coat themselves in musk when captured, while other behaviours were displayed only occasionally. Our study corroborates previous findings of local differentiation in snake behaviour, especially the case of supposed Batesian mimicry in dice snakes. In three of four localities where the dice snake lives in proximity or in sympatry with nose-horned vipers, they display fake striking, with additional head flattening as opposed to the viper-free locality. Larger snakes exhibit a wider array of antipredator behaviours, which commonly include musking and hissing. Expectedly, warmer snakes were more likely to display vigorous antipredator
behaviours such as struggling and striking. Injured snakes (a possible measure of a previous exposure to predation) displayed fewer behaviours and musked and hissed less. We call into question the analysis of isolated antipredator behavioural displays, and encourage using entire behavioural sequences in order to understand the complexity of antipredator behaviour.

Balkan green lizard, Lacerta trilineata (Squamata: Lacertidae): a new species for the Serbian herpetofauna

AB  - In Serbia, the southern and south-eastern parts of the country have the highest diversity of Reptile fauna. Due to the Mediterranean influence that is spreading across the North Macedonia to the north, some Mediterranean Reptile species have been recorded in Serbia, but there is a possibility that there are still unregistered ones. Concerning the importance of this part of Serbia, intensive faunistic research was done, which resulted in the discovery of L. trilineata, a new species for the herpetofauna of Serbia, in several localities. At each of explored localities, we found only one or few individuals of L. trilineata. This result lays the foundation for future population and conservation research of L. trilineata on the margins of its distribution.

AB  - We present the updated distribution of batracho- and herpetofauna in southern
and south-eastern Serbia, based on literature and new field records for 16
amphibian and 22 reptile species. In these two biogeographic regions, already
recognized as biodiversity hotspots, we discovered two new amphibian species
with limited distribution: Hyla orientalis and Pelobates balcanicus. Also, one
species (Triturus ivanbureshi) has restricted distribution, while one (Bombina
bombina) is rare. Four reptile species have limited distributions and six are rare in
these regions. The presence of hybrid zones and the influence of the Mediterranean
climate make southern and south-eastern Serbia areas of great importance and the
target for future ecological and conservation studies in Serbia.
AB  - У овом раду дато је ажурирано и систематизовано распрострањење
батрахо и херепетофауне јужне и југоисточне Србије, на основу
публикованих литературних, као и нових теренских података за 16
врста водоземаца и 22 врсте гмизаваца. У ова два биогеографска
региона, претходно препознатих као подручја високог специјског
диверзитета, забележене су две нове врсте водоземаца са ограниченим
распрострањењем: Hyla orientalis и Pelobates balcanicus. Такође, једна
врста репатих водоземца (Triturus ivanbureshi) има ограничено распрострањење, док је Bombina bombina веома ретка. Четири врсте
гмизаваца су са ограниченом дистрибуцијом, а још шест су веома
ретке у ова два биогеографска региона.
Од укупно 38 врста водоземаца и гмизаваца потврђених у регионима јужне и југоисточне Србије, шест је рањиво/готово угрожено према
критеријумима IUCN-а, осам су на анексу II Директиве о стаништима,
а две су на апендиксу II CITES-а. На националном нивоу, 10 врста се
сматра критично угроженим, угроженим или рањивим по критеријумима IUCN-а, три врсте су заштићене, а 29 строго заштићене законом.
Као резултат ових истраживања, две локације у јужној Србији:
Левосоје (Бујановац) и Славујевац (Прешево), предложене су за
заштиту у окивиру успостављања националних еколошких мрежа у
Србији.
Присуство хибридних зона и утицаја Медитеранске климе чине
регионе јужне и југоисточне Србије подручјима од великог значаја за
диверзитет наше земље, и фокусом за будуће еколошке и конзервационе студије.

AB  - We present the updated distribution data of the Hyla arborea species complex
in Serbia. Hyla arborea inhabits all biogeographic regions, while Hyla orientalis
inhabits only the easternmost parts of north-eastern, eastern and south-eastern
Serbia. Potential hybrid zone encompasses parts of central and southern Serbia
from the Đerdap gorge, over Niš to Bosilegrad. Since the taxonomic separation between the tree frog taxa was not yet recognized in national nomenclature, we
propose the official Serbian names. The species H. arborea will keep the standard
Serbian name “Gatalinka”, while for the species H. orientalis we propose the name
“Istočna gatalinka”.
AB  - У овом раду, приказујемо ажуриране податке о дистрибуцији
комплекса врста Hyla arborea у Србији. Подаци се састоје од налаза
објављених у литератури или на Интернету, заједно са претходно
необјављеним теренским подацима. Од ове две врсте, највећи део
територије Србије, укључујући све биогеографске регионе, насељава
H. arborea. Hyla orientalis, са друге стране, насељава само крајње
источне делове североисточне, источне и југоисточне Србије, са
потенцијалном хибридном зоном која такође обухвата делове централ-
не и јужне Србије. Дистрибуција H. arborea је густа у панонским
деловима Србије, конкретно у плавним зонама река Дунав, Сава и
Тиса, док је дистрибуција више раштркана у перипанонским и
планинско-котлинским деловима Србије. Hyla orientalis насељава
искључиво најисточније делове планинско-котлинског региона, где је
повезана са воденим системима који припадају Балканском планин-
ском венцу, док Карпатски и Родопски масиви представљају северо-
источну и југоисточну границу дистрибуције, респективно. За хибрид-
ну зону се претпоставља да обухвата оквирно 30 км широк коридор
који се протеже од Ђердапске клисуре, преко Ниша до Босилеграда,
али додатно узорковање ће морати да се изврши како би се ово
потврдило.
Пошто таксономско раздвајање између криптичних врста гаталин-
ки још увек није препознато у нашој националној номенклатури, овај
рад предлаже званичне српске називе за ове врсте. Номинална врста
H. arborea ће задржати стандардни српски назив „гаталинка“, док за
врсту H. orientalis предлажемо име „источна гаталинка“.

AB  - Studies of body condition in snakes are generally lacking and were only done on a few species and with limited sample sizes. Additionally, almost no studies considered how different factors affect body condition. We used a large dataset amassed over a 15 year-long ecological study to make a preliminary screening of body condition index (BCI) variation in a metapopulation of dice snakes (Natrix tessellata) in the region of Lake Prespa. We considered how factors such as sex, food, colour morph, locality and time affect BCI. We demonstrate a positive effect of food (relatively less in males), and lower BCI in females. Importantly, there is a strong seasonal effect, summer months having a positive effect as opposed to spring. The results of our study raise important considerations for future studies on snake BCI, but also conservation of freshwater ecosystems.

AB  - Golem Grad island, better known as “Snake Island” due to the large population of dice snakes
(Natrix tessellata) is a strictly protected area within National Park Galičica (North Macedonia). From
2008, the snakes’ tale started slowly unravelling, thanks to the start of mark-recapture monitoring.
More than 6.000 snakes were marked during >15 years. Opportunistic dissections provided information
about fecundity and body condition. Three distinct colour morphs coexist: ‘green back with dark spots’
is the most common, but uniformly green and melanistic individuals are not rare either. Furthermore,
this population exhibits gigantism, possibly due to the abundance of food: the largest island male
and female measured 113cm and 129cm, respectively, in contrast to maximal body sizes from other
populations reported in literature: 95cm and 122.5cm. Worryingly, this island population faces serious
threats, especially fish poaching. Hundreds of snakes meet their untimely fate tangled and ultimately
drowned in fishing nets, or even persecuted, while small individuals are crushed by the rocks they hide
under by wandering tourists. Despite continuous conservation efforts, this snake population is rapidly
declining, particularly since 2011 when poaching pressure increased. More recently, additional dice
snake population surveys were launched in Prespa, in Konjsko village (MK) and on Mal Grad Island (AL).
The conservation status differs among the three localities. According to IUCN Red Lists, the dice snake
is considered as Near Threatened (NT) in North Macedonia, while in Albania it is still classified as Not
Evaluated (NE; however in the new, updated list of 2019 (still unpublished) is has been evaluated as
Least Concern (LC)). We plan to use genetics and recapture analyses to assess the genetic structure and
the degree of (possible) connectivity among sites. This information will be especially useful in order to
understand how viable Prespa Lake’s dice snake population(s) are, despite the various pressures they
face. Efficient conservation actions rely on such insight, while a species conservation action plan at the
transboundary level is required.

AB  - Prey animals have developed a wide array of antipredator behaviours to confront, dissuade or escape a predator. Death feigning (DF), where prey animals get in a tonic immobile state and resemble dead animal, is a sort of a last-ditch attempt to escape consumption. Even if this behaviour works, it is vitally important that the prey chooses the right time to escape: a quick decision may attract the predators' attention, while waiting too long might prolong exposure. In the field, we measured both the occurrence and the duration of DF in three distinct colour morphs of dice snakes; the most common dice morph, uniformly green, and melanistic individuals. We sampled only adult individuals and considered factors such as sex, size, body temperature, injuries, and presence of food, gravidity as well as absolute crawling speeds on the occurrence and duration of DF. Our results suggest that females DF more often than males and that gravid females DF the least often. Snakes that crawled faster were less likely to DF, but interestingly, gravid females that crawled faster were more likely to DF. Diced and green gravid snakes spent far less time in DF than nongravid individuals, while in melanistic snakes gravidity did not affect DF duration. These differences are especially pronounced in the uniformly green snakes. Additionally, colder, bigger and faster snakes DF for longer intervals. Larger snakes cannot be immediately consumed and thus can afford to try a risky strategy such as DF, which is supposedly used as a hard reset in a predator-prey interaction. Gravidity undoubtedly imposes significant constraints on snakes and probably limits escape options and makes DF too risky. However, melanism can offer certain advantages to gravid individuals, notably thermal benefits and in turn a higher metabolic rate and locomotor capacity which can prove beneficial in a DF situation.

AB  - The establishment of ecological networks (including Natura 2000) is one of the priorities in the conservation of important species and habitats in the Republic of Serbia. During the last three years (2020-2022), we conducted field research on amphibian and reptile species listed in the Annexes II & IV of the Habitat Directive. The main goals were to obtain data about precise geographic distribution, estimate population statuses and conservation threats, as well as to propose conservation measures for the studied populations and their habitats. Field studies lasted more than 70 days and included over 60 locations across the country. Focal groups were species listed in Annex II: Triturus cristatus, T. dobrogicus, T. ivanbureschi, T. macedonicus, Testudo graeca, T. hermanni, Emys orbicularis, Elaphe quatuorlineata and Vipera ursinii. Results of these studies provided a more precise geographic distribution of crested newts and their hybrid zones in Serbia. For two species, we proposed the protection of two locations at the national level: one in eastern Serbia (for T. ivanbureschi) and one in southern Serbia (for T. macedonicus). The most threatened regions, where massive habitat losses and changes were detected, are the valleys of Velika and Zapadna Morava rivers, as well as wetlands along the Danube and Sava rivers. Populations of crested newts in Serbia are endangered by several threatening factors: habitat destructions/alterations, agriculture, water pollution and climatic changes. For reptiles, the most important locations for conservation of species listed in Annex II were detected in southeastern, southern and southwestern Serbia. For three reptile species with limited distribution and small populations, we proposed two locations in southern and southwestern Serbia for protection at the national level. The main threats for those species are habitat destruction/alternation and climatic changes. Results of these studies pointed out inconsistencies in conservation priorities between the national and European levels.

AB  - Prey animals have a wide array of strategies that they use to avoid or deter predators. In some cases, these strategies include warding off a predator attack by advertising strong chemical defences, such as venom, or by mimicking sympatric species, which do possess such defences (i.e. bluffing/mimicry). Dice snakes are nonvenemous natricine snakes that often live in sympatry with vipers. These snakes also have an ample arsenal of antipredator behavioural displays that include bluffing, characterized by hissing (auditory mimicry) with head flattening and fake strikes (visual mimicry). We measured the occurrence of bluffing displays in four different localities; on Golem Grad Island and in Konjsko (North Macedonia), where dice snakes share their habitat with nose-horned vipers (Vipera mmodytes) while in the other two localities, Mal Grad Island (Albania) and Pančevački rit Serbia), vipers are not present. We analysed the effect of locality, size (snout to vent length) nd sex on occurrence of bluffing as an antipredator strategy. Our results show that the ccurrence of bluffing was significantly affected by locality and body size. Notably, in the two localities where dice snakes share the same habitat with vipers the occurrence of bluffing displays is significantly higher than in the two localities where vipers are not present. This possibly indicates a case of Batesian mimicry, reported for the first time in dice snakes. Additionaly, our analysis shows that the predicted probabilities of the occurrence of bluffing increased with size. This seems intuitive, as bluffing behaviours should have a certain size threshold when they become effective, since small snakes can be easily consumed.

AB  - Kotschy's gecko (Mediodactylus kotschyi) is native to the eastern Mediterranean basin but well known as a successful colonizer. The most probable way of its spreading is cargo and passenger traffic. In Serbia, M. kotschyi is assumed native only in Prizren. Anthropogenic introductions were confirmed in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Pančevo and Smederevo. This study aimed to summarize data of M. kotschyi findings with reference to recently confirmed population in Niš and newly recorded population in Sremska Mitrovica. These two populations are well-established with multiple pieces of evidence of reproduction. Pholidosis data were collected for several individuals to confirm their specific status. New and previously recorded introduced populations of Kotchy's gecko in Serbia belong to M. kotschyi bibroni based on morphology. The introduction was most likely related to railways and further spread in urban zones is expected. It seems that introduced populations do not threaten native ecosystems as these populations are appeared to be highly localized in urban habitats. Apstrakt: Novi nalazi Kočijevog gekona, Mediodactylus kotschyi (Steindachner, 1870) u Srbiji, sa posebnim fokusom na nedavno zabeležene populacije u Nišu i Sremskoj Mitrovici Kočijev gekon (Mediodactylus kotschyi) se autohtono javlja u basenu istočnog Sredozemlja ali je dobro poznat i kao uspešan kolonizator. AB  - In this study, we present an updated distribution data of Anguis fragilis
complex species in Serbia. The dataset consists of literature and Internet records,
coupled with previously unpublished distribution data gathered in the field. Of the two species of the complex, Anguis fragilis is present in the western and southern
parts of the country while Anguis colchica is present in the northeastern and
eastern parts of the country. There is an absence of both species in the
northernmost parts of the country, due to the lack of adequate habitat. The field
records tend to be more abundant in the Mountain-valley altitudinal region, and
scarcer and more scattered in the Peripannonian and Pannonian altitudinal regions,
which can partly be attributed to the sampling bias. The location and width of the
contact zone are still poorly known. It’s hypothesized to follow the Velika Morava
river valley to the south and then the boundary between the Carpathian-Balkan and
Rhodope mountain ranges in the southeast, but the hybrid zone could be situated
more to the west. There is a certain discrepancy, in the literature, between the
contact zone proposed by morphological data, and the one proposed by molecular
sampling. That stresses the need for thorough sampling in the region and further
analyses. Finally, since the taxonomic split between the cryptic slow worm taxa
was not yet recognized in our national nomenclature, this paper also presents the
official Serbian names for the two species. The species Anguis fragilis will keep
the standard Serbian name “Slepić”, while for the species Anguis colchica we
propose the name “Istočni slepić”.
AB  - У овом раду, приказујемо ажуриране податке о дистрибуцији
комплекса врста слепића (Anguis fragilis complex) у Србији. Подаци се
састоје из налаза објављених у литератури или на Интернету, заједно
са претходно необјављеним дистрибуционим подацима сакупљеним
на терену. Од две врсте комплекса присутне у Србији, Anguis fragilis је распрострањен у западним и јужним крајевима наше земље док је
Anguis colchica присутан у североисточним и источним крајевима. У
најсевернијим деловима наше земље констатовано је одсуство обе
врсте, због недостатка одговарајућег станишта. Налази су бројнији у
планинско-котлинском региону и ређи и раштрканији у перипанон-
ском и панонском региону, што се делимично може објаснити
несистематским узорковањем. Локација и ширина контактне зоне две
врсте слепића у Србији је још увек недовољно позната. Претпоставља
се да се пружа дуж долине Велике Мораве ка југу а затим прати
границу између Родопског и Карпатско-Балканског планинског маси-
ва ка југо-истоку, али постоје индиције да се хибридна зона налази и
западније. Постоји извесно неслагање, у литератури, између контактне
зоне предложене на основу морфолошких анализа и оне предложене
на основу молекуларних анализа. Ово указује на потребу за опсежни-
јим узорковањем и даљим анализама. Коначно, пошто раздвајање две
криптичке врсте слепића до сада није препознато у нашој номенкла-
тури, у овом раду предлажемо званичне српске називе за наведене
врсте. Врста Anguis fragilis ће задржати стандардно српско име
„Слепић“, док за врсту Anguis colchica предлажемо име „Источни

abstract = "In this study, we present an updated distribution data of Anguis fragilis
complex species in Serbia. The dataset consists of literature and Internet records,
coupled with previously unpublished distribution data gathered in the field. Of the two species of the complex, Anguis fragilis is present in the western and southern
parts of the country while Anguis colchica is present in the northeastern and
eastern parts of the country. There is an absence of both species in the
northernmost parts of the country, due to the lack of adequate habitat. The field
records tend to be more abundant in the Mountain-valley altitudinal region, and
scarcer and more scattered in the Peripannonian and Pannonian altitudinal regions,
which can partly be attributed to the sampling bias. The location and width of the
contact zone are still poorly known. It’s hypothesized to follow the Velika Morava
river valley to the south and then the boundary between the Carpathian-Balkan and
Rhodope mountain ranges in the southeast, but the hybrid zone could be situated
more to the west. There is a certain discrepancy, in the literature, between the
contact zone proposed by morphological data, and the one proposed by molecular
sampling. That stresses the need for thorough sampling in the region and further
analyses. Finally, since the taxonomic split between the cryptic slow worm taxa
was not yet recognized in our national nomenclature, this paper also presents the
official Serbian names for the two species. The species Anguis fragilis will keep
the standard Serbian name “Slepić”, while for the species Anguis colchica we
propose the name “Istočni slepić”., У овом раду, приказујемо ажуриране податке о дистрибуцији
комплекса врста слепића (Anguis fragilis complex) у Србији. Подаци се
састоје из налаза објављених у литератури или на Интернету, заједно
са претходно необјављеним дистрибуционим подацима сакупљеним
на терену. Од две врсте комплекса присутне у Србији, Anguis fragilis је распрострањен у западним и јужним крајевима наше земље док је
Anguis colchica присутан у североисточним и источним крајевима. У
најсевернијим деловима наше земље констатовано је одсуство обе
врсте, због недостатка одговарајућег станишта. Налази су бројнији у
планинско-котлинском региону и ређи и раштрканији у перипанон-
ском и панонском региону, што се делимично може објаснити
несистематским узорковањем. Локација и ширина контактне зоне две
врсте слепића у Србији је још увек недовољно позната. Претпоставља
се да се пружа дуж долине Велике Мораве ка југу а затим прати
границу између Родопског и Карпатско-Балканског планинског маси-
ва ка југо-истоку, али постоје индиције да се хибридна зона налази и
западније. Постоји извесно неслагање, у литератури, између контактне
зоне предложене на основу морфолошких анализа и оне предложене
на основу молекуларних анализа. Ово указује на потребу за опсежни-
јим узорковањем и даљим анализама. Коначно, пошто раздвајање две
криптичке врсте слепића до сада није препознато у нашој номенкла-
тури, у овом раду предлажемо званичне српске називе за наведене
врсте. Врста Anguis fragilis ће задржати стандардно српско име
„Слепић“, док за врсту Anguis colchica предлажемо име „Источни
слепић“.",

Some lizards, particularly geckos, proved as adept colonizers, especially in urban ecosystems. The Kotschyi’s gecko (Mediodactylus kotschyi sensu lato) is a small crepuscular and nocturnal lizard characteristic for the eastern Mediterranean. Recent molecular analyses showed that it is, in fact, a species complex. 
In Serbia, Kotschyi’s gecko naturally occurs only in Prizren, Metohia, but recently it reached the southern edges of the Pannonian plain, which are under the strong influence of continental climate (hot summers and cold winters, with long periods of frost). Recently several populations of this small, inconspicuous lizard were discovered in Novi Sad, Belgrade, Smederevo and Pančevo, and possibly Niš, further to the south. The hypothesis of introduction during historic times was proposed, but a more likely explanation is a relatively recent simultaneous introduction, probably facilitated through railroad beds as corridors. Taxonomic identity of the introduced populations is still poorly known, but according to their morphological characters, they most likely belong to the kotschyi group. 
Involvement of citizen scientists, who shared their gecko findings with the Serbian Herpetological Society, proved invaluable in detecting the cases of introduction of this lizard. Such cooperation will further be encouraged and facilitated.

AB  - The Red-eared slider (Trachemis scripta elegans) is among the world’s most invasive species, and recentlyits related subspecies (T. s. scripta and T. s. troostii) were also being introduced in Europe. Herein, we present dataon introduction of the Red-eared slider and its related subspecies in Serbia, gathered during more than ten years.The number of reports of these turtles across Serbia almost doubled since 2015. The introductions are concentratedaround Belgrade and Novi Sad cities where large populations were detected, and all cases of possible reproduction:nest digging females and findings of hatchlings. The lakes, ponds and canals in the lowland habitats (less than 100m a.s.l.) were more vulnerable to the introduction of alien turtles – more than 73% of found alien turtles weredetected at low altitudes. The two other subspecies (T. s. scripta and T. s. troostii), which emerged in the pet tradeas a “substitute” after the ban on import and trade of Red-eared sliders, were also recorded at the few localities.They can hybridize with the Red-eared slider (T. s. elegans) and possibly increase its invasive potential. The stricterenforcement of the existing legislature in Serbia is needed, together with raising public awareness of the problemand eradication of established populations. Building of turtle sanctuaries is also suggested as an ethical andecologically safe alternative for disposal of unwanted pets.

AB  - In the most recent comprehensive distribution of vipers in the western and
central Balkans, 210 precise records (146 UTM cells) for all three species of vipers
(Vipera ammodytes, V. berus, and V. ursinii) were presented for Serbia. During the
past eight years, extensive field investigations within the ongoing conservation
projects in our country (e.g. Ecological Networks and Natura 2000), significantly
increased the number of faunistic records, which urged the need for publishing the
updated distribution of all three species of vipers in Serbia. We collected a total of
770 records of vipers in Serbia, of which literature data constitute 49.4% (n = 380)
and unpublished field data made as much as 50.6% (n = 390) of the records. As
expected, V. ammodytes was the best-represented species, accounting for 614 records (79.8%), followed by V. berus with 145 records (18.8%), and V. ursinii
with 11 records (1.4%). Results of the present study showed that in our country
there are three areas crucially important for the diversity of vipers, with all three
species present: Koritnik Mt. and Žljeb Mt. in Metohija, as well as Mokra Gora Mt.
in south-western Serbia. We also found 25 10×10 km UTM squares with sympatry
of two species of vipers. The designation of areas of special importance for vipers
(e.g. Mokra Gora Mt., Dukat Mt., Besna kobila Mt., Kamena Gora Mt.) should be
one of the priority actions for improvement of their conservation statuses in our
country.

AB  - This study presents an overview of localities where the alien pond slider Trachemys scripta (Thunberg in Schoepff, 1792) (Emydidiae) and its subspecies, T. s. elegans (Wied-Neuwied, 1839), T. s. scripta (Thunberg in Schoepff, 1792) and T. s. troostii (Holbrook, 1836), has been introduced in Serbia and shows indication of its possible reproduction in this country. The number of the new reports of these turtles is almost equal to the number of previously published findings. Most introductions as well as the cases of possible reproduction (nest-digging females and hatchlings found) have been concentrated around the large urban hubs - Belgrade and Novi Sad cities, where the largest populations have been detected. Generally, the water bodies in the lowland habitats (less than 100 m a.s.l.) were proven to be much more vulnerable to the introduction of alien turtles - more than 73% of cases of introduction were detected at low altitudes. Previously unreported "substitute" subspecies (T. s. scripta and T. s. troostii) can hybridise with the red-eared slider (T. s. elegans) and possibly increase its invasive potential. AB  - In this study, we present updated distribution data for all three brown frog species (Rana spp.) inhabiting Serbia. The data provided consists of newly collected field records and compiled data previously published in literature or via Internet. Of the three species found in Serbia, Rana dalmatina is the most widespread, present in all three altitudinal regions and all biogeographical regions. Rana graeca is confined to Mountain-valley altitudinal region in permanent fastflowing rivers or streams and it reaches its northern range boundaries in Serbia. Rana temporaria is the rarest of the three, with fragmented range restricted to the high mountains or few isolated lowland populations, and in the north-eastern Serbia, it is vicariant with R. graeca in canyons and gorges of montane rivers. The presence of Rana arvalis in Serbia is mentioned in literature but was not confirmed during the subsequent field surveys, so we consider it only as a potential species for the Serbian batrachofauna. The brown frog faunal composition of Serbia is identical to that of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia and Montenegro, while it is somewhat different from that of Hungary and Romania and the most different from Croatia and Slovenia. Serbian brown frogs belong to European (R. temporaria) and South-European (R. dalmatina, R. graeca) chorotypes. All species of brown frogs present or potentially present in Serbia and their habitats are identified as great conservation priorities.

All species of brown frogs present or potentially present in Serbia and their habitats are identified as great conservation priorities.",
