AB - The stomach content of 277 Amur sleeper individuals has been analyzed to present its feeding habits. Fish were sampled using electrofishing from July to November 2017 in the Danube River drainage channel near Veliko Gradište (Serbia). Fish age was estimated by otoliths examination. Ingested prey organisms were identified to the lowest reliable taxonomic level. The biotic indices: vacuity index (VI), frequency of occurrence (F), abundance (Cn), index of importance (PV), Shannon’s diversity index (H’), and equitability index (Eh) were calculated. A total of 18 prey categories and 1144 individual prey were identified in the fish diet, dominantly aquatic macroinvertebrates. There were no significant difference in diet composition between sampling months as well as 0+, 1+, and 2+ age groups (both 3+ and 4+ had one individual). Only eight individuals were found with empty intestines, thus VI was low (2.9). In average, each fish had 4.1 prey items in their intestines. For whole sample, H′ was 1.84 and Eh was 0.64. Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, and Gastropoda were the most frequent, dominant, and abundant. The greatest diversity of prey items was recorded for fish sampled in October as well as for 2+ individuals, and the lowest for fish from August and 0+ individuals.

AB - Pikeperch of age classes 3+ and 4+ were collected from the Garaši reservoir (Serbia)
to analyze their bioindicator potential and compare their possible differences. Concentrations of
26 elements were determined in gills, muscles, and liver by inductively-coupled plasma optical
emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and of 17 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and six polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs) in muscle by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC-MS).
Histopathological changes in the liver and gills were analyzed as biomarkers of general fish health.
Only the concentrations of Cd, Na, and P in the muscles differed significantly. The OCPs and
PCBs concentrations were below the detection limits, so fish meat consumption does not pose a risk
concerning these substances. Hg and Cd exceeded the maximum allowed concentrations in some
4+ individuals, probably due to biomagnification. Gills were the most affected by metal exposure in
both age classes. Histopathological changes and indices were minor and did not differ significantly
between age classes, suggesting that pollution did not affect the morphology and structure of gills and
liver. There were no significant correlations between elemental accumulation and fish condition or
between histopathological scores. Therefore, both age classes can be used as bioindicators of pollution.

AB - The effects of a fructose-rich diet and chronic stress on copper metabolism in the kidneys
are still understudied. We investigated whether fructose and/or chronic unpredictable stress modulate
copper metabolism in a way that affects redox homeostasis, thus contributing to progression
of metabolic disturbances in the kidney. We determined protein level of copper transporters,
chaperones, and cuproenzymes including cytochrome c oxidase, as well as antioxidant enzymes
function in the kidneys of male Wistar rats subjected to 20% liquid fructose supplementation
and/or chronic stress. Liquid fructose supplementation increased level of copper chaperone of
superoxide dismutase and decreased metallothionein level, while rendering the level of copper
importer and copper chaperones involved in copper delivery to mitochondria and trans Golgi
network unaffected. Stress had no effect on renal copper metabolism. The activity and expression
of renal antioxidant enzymes remained unaltered in all experimental groups. In conclusion, fructose,
independently of stress, decreased renal copper level, and modulated renal copper metabolism
as to preserve vital cellular function including mitochondrial energy production and antioxidative
defense, at the expense of intracellular copper storage.

AB - Accumulation of Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Se, Si, Sr, and Zn was analyzed in gills, liver, gonads, and muscle of European chub (Squalius cephalus), Cactus roach (Rutilus virgo), and pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) from Zlatar reservoir (Serbia) using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The highest concentrations of Cu in liver as well as Ba, Ca, Fe, Mn, Na, P, and Sr in gills were detected in all fish species, while the lowest concentrations of Cu, Fe, Mn, Na, and Zn were detected in muscle. Pikeperch had significantly lower concentrations of Ba in all tissues compared to the other species, as well as Fe, P, and Sr in muscle, K, Mg, Mn, Sr, and Zn in gills, and Fe in gonads. European chub had significantly higher concentrations of Ca, Cu, and Zn in muscle, Cu in liver, and Cr and Cu in gonads compared to Cactus roach and pikeperch. Cd concentration in one individual of Cactus roach exceeded the maximum allowed concentration. The muscle was exposed to the lowest pressure of metal pollution in all species, and European chub accumulated more metals compared to the other species. There is no significant health risk due to consumption of investigated species. A major hazard index (HI) contributor in all species was Hg. According to the target carcinogenic risk factor (TR), target hazard quotient (THQ), and HI, men are under lower health risk compared to the women. The TR and THQ for As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn as well as HI values were higher for European chub compared to the other species. On the other hand, THQ for Hg was highest for pikeperch.

AB - Istraživanja zajednica riba obavljena su u oktobru 2019. godine u akumulacijama Uvac,
Zlatar i Radoinja na području Specijalnog rezervata prirode ″Uvac″. Ukupno je registrovano
prisustvo 12 vrsta iz pet familija. U svim akumulacijama zabeležena je dominacija ciprinidnih
vrsta.
odgovara β mezosaprobnim vodama II klase boniteta (umereno zagađene vode).
AB - Ichthyofaunistic surveys were conducted in October at Uvac, Zlatar, and Radoinja reservoirs
in the area of Special natural reserve ″Uvac″. The presence of 12 species from five families
was recorded. The dominance of cyprinid species was recorded in all reservoirs. The values
of the saprobic index (S) varied from 1.87 (Radoinja) to 1.95 (Uvac), which corresponds
to β mesosaprobic waters of the II quality class (moderately polluted waters). The greatest
diversity was recorded for the Uvac reservoir, and the lowest for Radoinja. Radoinja reservoir
had an ecological potential that belongs to the III-IV class, while the other reservoirs had a
II-III class. The ecological status in the studied reservoirs is satisfactory.

AB - Northern pike specimens of 0+, 1+, and 2+ age classes were collected in June 2013 from the Vizelj channel near Belgrade (Serbia). Inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry (ICP-OES) and atomic absorption spectrometer SpectrAA 220 were used for analyzing concentrations of As, Cr, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Sr, Pb, and Zn, as well as Hg in muscle, gills, and liver. Metal pollution index (MPI) was calculated. Concentrations of As, Cd, Co, and Pb were below the limit of detection. Concentrations of Cu, Hg, and Zn in muscle did not exceed the maximum allowed concentrations. The gills were tissue which was most affected by pollution. The highest concentrations of Fe in muscle, Cr and Fe in gills, and Hg, Sr, and Zn in liver were recorded in 0+ individuals, as well as Zn in gills of 2+ individuals. On contrary, the lowest concentrations were recorded for Zn in gills of 0+ individuals, Hg in gills of 1+ individuals, and Fe in muscle, Cr and Sr in gills, and Zn in liver of 2+ individuals. Regarding age classes, 2+ juveniles had the highest MPI values for all tissues. Correlations between the metal(loid) accumulation and fish condition were not significant, as well as between fish length and weight and Cu and Hg in muscle, Cu, Hg, and Sr in gills, and Cu, Cr, and Fe in liver. Results indicated that young individuals were more sensitive to pollution, but older fish showed higher overall bioaccumulation of toxic elements analyzed in this study.

AB - In recent decades, the Amur sleeper (Perccottus glenii) is one of the most impressive east-to-west invaders of European inland waters, but there are insufficient data on its biology in the countries it has entered. Specimens of two sets of samples from November 2015 (n=25) and October 2016 (n=39) were caught in the Danube River channel near Veliko Gradište (Serbia) by electrofishing. Thirty morphometric and eight meristic characteristics of the collected fish were measured with the aim of describing the general body shape in more detail using the “point-to-point” method. This is the first attempt to obtain morphometric and meristic characteristics of Amur sleeper caught in Serbia. The results revealed a relatively low variability in the morphometric and meristic characters of the studied population. When compared to other studies, there was a great variability of the studied characteristics between geographically distant European populations that inhabit different water body types. Female fish had more robust bodies compared to males of the same length, while males had longer pectoral, anal and dorsal fins. Additionally, 2+ individuals had more robust heads and jaws, as well as longer anterior parts of the body compared to 1+ individuals of the same size.

AB - During 4 seasons (middle of summer, late summer, early autumn, middle of autumn)
measurements of chlorophyll-a have been conducted, along a 30 m water column (2 m interval). Variability of chlorophyll-a concentrations and their vertical distribution were analyzed. During the thermal stratification period, maximal concentrations of measured parameter were recorded in the metalimnion layer. TSI values varied within 36.9 – 49.4, thus indicating oligotrophic and mesotrophic status of reservoir depending on season.

AB - This study was conducted on individuals of European perch from six reservoirs in Serbia with different properties, used for different purposes, and situated at different altitudes. Samples of muscle, gills, and liver, as well as water samples, were used for analysis of elemental accumulation. Histopathological (HP) analysis of gills and liver, and Fulton's condition factor (CF) were used as biomarkers. Analysis of Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Se, Si, Sr, and Zn was conducted by inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and accordingly, metal pollution index and bioaccumulation factor (BAF) were calculated. Elemental accumulation varied considerably both among tissues and reservoirs. Reservoirs located on large low-altitude rivers were the most heavily polluted with metals (Međuvršje, on the Zapadna Morava River, and Lake Sava, on the Sava River). Of three tissues analyzed, the gills were most affected by pollution. The levels of Hg in muscle decreased with an increase in reservoir altitude. Specimens sampled from the highest altitude reservoir were the least affected by HP alterations; however, HP differences between the reservoirs were not statistically significant, and the severity of HP changes was generally low. No significant correlations between the elemental accumulation or HP indices with CF were observed.

AB - Concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn in sediment samples and muscle tissue of the European perch were analyzed using inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), with the aim to assess the potential ecological (RI) and human health risk, and the degree of contamination (Cd) of three types of reservoirs in Serbia, based on their purpose: electricity generation (Vlasina, Perućac, Zaovine, and Međuvršje), drinking water supply (Garaši), and recreation (Lake Sava). The concentrations of the studied elements were higher in sediments than in fish. However, the levels of Cd in fish caught in Vlasina, Zaovine, and Međuvršje, Hg in Perućac and Garaši, and Pb in Lake Sava exceeded the maximum allowed concentrations. The pollution load index (PLI) indicated that sediments in all six reservoirs were contaminated, but Cd was low; a moderate contamination with Cd was observed in Vlasina, Perućac, and Zaovine, Cr in Zaovine and Međuvršje, and Cu in Međuvršje. A low RI was recorded for all studied reservoirs. Cd was found to be the primary contamination and ecological risk factor. Total target hazard quotient (THQ) and target carcinogenic risk factor (TR) were higher for fishers operating in these reservoirs than for the general population. Higher values of PLI, Cd, RI, and TR were observed in electricity generation reservoirs. Results indicated that this type of reservoirs suffer from higher anthropogenic pressure and/or have a worse pollution management policy compared with other types of reservoirs included in this study, especially the drinking water supply reservoir.

AB - The aim of this study was to describe biometric and feeding characteristics of highly invasive species Perccottus glenii in the investigated locality. A total of 85 fish were electrofished in the drainage channel located at the vicinity of Veliko Gradište (northeastern
Serbia) and preserved in the alcohol solution. In the laboratory, fish were measured (TL,
± 0.01 mm; W, ± 0.01 g), otholits and digestive tracts were removed for age determination
and dietary analysis (stereomicroscope). Biometric analysis included length-frequency
distribution using 10 mm class intervals; determination of average length and weight for
each age group; lenght-weigth relationship; Fulton’s condition factor. Ingested organisms
were identified to the lowest reliable taxonomic level (mainly order) and counted. The
respective ranges of TL and W of examined fish were 35-140.7 mm and 0.5-40 g. Length
class 70.1-80.0 mm clearly dominated (24%). Four age groups were determined (0+-3+),
and their descriptive statistics is presented. The value of allometric coefficient for the
length-weight relationship (b= 3.068) indicated isometric growth. Fulton’s condition factor did not differ between age groups. Empty digestive tract was found in 2 specimens. A
total of 12 prey categories representing Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Odonata, Hemiptera,
Chironomidae, Coleoptera, Gastropoda, Hirudinea, Oligochaeta, Gammaraidae, unidentified and terrestrial insects were identified in the diet. Generally, the diet is entirely composed of aquatic invertebrates, as only one terrestrial insect was found. Obtained results
did not show clear difference in diet composition between age groups. However, analysis
have shown that the most diverse diet characterize 2+ age. By frequency, the insect larvae
were categories with highest participation regardless of age.

abstract = "The aim of this study was to describe biometric and feeding characteristics of highly invasive species Perccottus glenii in the investigated locality.

(temperatura, koncentracija rastvorenog kiseonika, pH, konduktivitet i koncentracija
hlorofila-a) u vodi akumulacije „Uvac” tokom sezone sredina leta – rana jesen 2017.
godine. Tokom posmatranog dela vegetacione sezone vodu ove akumulacije odlikuje direktna termička stratifikacija. Dubinska distribucija ostalih praćenih parametara usko prati uspostavljenu termičku stratifikaciju.
AB - The aim of the study was to describe the depth distribution of selected water quality
parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen content, pH, conductivity and chlorophyll – a
concentration) in the "Uvac" reservoir during the middle of the summer to early autumn
2017. During observed part of the vegetation season, direct thermal stratification of water
was recorded. Depth distribution of other water quality parameters closely followed the
thermal stratification.
