AB - In this study the effect of long term exposure to cadmium (Cd) on Ostrinia nubilalis larval growth, development, survival rate and oxidative status was analyzed. Newly hatched first instar - L1 larvae were reared on a Cd contaminated diet until the larvae reached the final, fifth instar - L5 or developed into pupae. In total, six experimental groups, five treatments (concentrations of Cd in fresh diet: Cd I: 0.73, Cd II: 3.70, Cd III: 6.85, Cd IV: 41.71 and Cd V: 77.53 mg kg-1) and a control group (C) were set up. The results of the experiment showed that exposure to higher concentrations of Cd (41.71 and 77.53 mg kg-1) had a significant influence on development and redox status of O. nubilalis larvae: (1) the development rate was strongly reduced resulting in a prolonged pupation time; (2) the survival rate of larvae was prominently lower; (3) bioaccumulation factor (measured in pupae) was reduced which indicated that larvae could accumulate Cd to a certain level; (4) the level of the lipid peroxidation was significantly higher, which points to oxidative damage; (5) the expression of Mtn was significantly up-regulated while Cat and GPx genes down-regulated. In conclusion, long term exposure to dietary Cd in a concentration of 41.7 mg kg-1 and higher, induced oxidative stress and slowed down growth and development of O. nubilalis larvae.

AB - The European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) is one of the most important insect pests of maize, and has a significant impact on the production of this crop. In this work, we examined the effects of different insecticides on the antioxidative defense system of O. nubilalis larvae. The experimental setup consisted of a completely randomized block design with 4 replicates. Four experimental groups were formed as follows: control (C), indoxacarb (250 mL ha-1), chlorantraniliprole (100 mL ha-1) and the chlorantraniliprole+lambda cyhalothrin (200 mL ha-1) group. Larvae from maize stems were collected 20 days after insecticide application and the whole larvae were homogenized. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione S-transferase (GST), and the total amount of free SH groups were assessed. Comparison of the experimental groups showed that indoxacarb significantly affected the activities of GST, GPx and the total amount of free SH groups, while chlorantraniliprole significantly affected the activities of SOD, CAT, GST and the total amount of free SH groups, while chlorantraniliprole+lambda cyhalothrin significantly affected the activities of CAT, GST and the total amount of free SH groups. The results show that exposure to insecticides considerably affects the antioxidative defense components of the European corn borer larvae, especially chlorantraniliprole (T2).

AB - The European Corn Borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) is one of the most damaging insect pests of corn
and it has a detrimental influence on corn production. This work examines the effects of different
insecticides on the antioxidative defense system of Ostrinia nubilalis larvae from Rimski Šancevi
(near Novi Sad, Serbia). The experiment setup consisted of a completely randomized block design
with 4 replicates. Four experimental groups were formed: control group (K) and C1 (indoxacarb –
0,25 ml ha-1), C2 (chlorantraniliprole – 0,1ml ha-1) and C3 (chlorantraniliprole + lambda cyhalothrin –
0,20 ml ha-1). Larvae from maize stems (hybrid NS 6030, FAO group 600) were collected following
20 days after the insecticide application, after which the homogenates of whole larvae were made.
Ultimately, determination of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalase (CAT) and glutathione S
transferase (GST) activity was performed. The comparison of the experimental groups has determined
that SOD activity decreases significantly, whereas CAT activity suggestively increases in group C2 in
relation to K. GST activity is significantly higher in all insecticides-treated groups in relation to K.
Results indicate that the highest variations in larval enzyme activity was recorded in group C2, which
proposes chlorantaniliprole as the most efficient insecticide for further use.
