Anomalies of Sponge Spicules: Exploring Links to Environmental Pollution

AB  - The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of spicule malformations in freshwater sponges in relation to selected environmental parameters of the streams and the presence of river pollutants. A total of 50 sponge samples were collected from ten rivers in Serbia. Selected parameters of the water varied considerably at every site where sponges were found. After spicule preparation, the samples were subjected to morphological analysis by light and scanning electron microscopy, and the number of anomalies were recorded (spicules with bulbous enlargements, sharply bent, bifurcated, scissor- and cross-like, and t-shaped). The frequencies and types of malformations within the analyzed specimens varied from 1 to 100 per 1000 spicules, with an average number of 12 per 1000. The main types of anomalies were single- and double-bent spicules. The highest number of anomalies was found in a specimen of Eunapius fragilis collected at Markovac (Velika Morava River), and the lowest number was found in a specimen of Ephydatia fluviatilis from Kanjiža (Tisa River). The sites with the lowest and the highest numbers of anomalies showed statistically significant differences in concentrations of ammonia, orthophosphates, sodium, chloride, manganese, and lead. This study indicates that several pollutants potentially affect the occurrence of spicule anomalies.

AB  - Ephoron virgo (Olivier, 1791) is an European burrowing filter-feeding mayfly species. Once common in large rivers, in XX century it became rare due to increased negative anthropogenic influences. In Serbia there was only one recent report of its presence, from the Danube River (Iron Gate area). The aim of this paper is to report on the first finding of E. virgo from the Sava River, and to discuss its scarce findings in the region. Three larval specimens were found in the Belgrade region in grab sample taken in 2014. In order to assess the development of the population in the region, a comprehensive investigation should be conducted.

AB  - Specimens from three populations of native neritid snail Theodoxus danubialis (C. Pfeiffer, 1828) from the Balkan (the Una, Lepenica and Nišava Rivers) were processed. Obtained 16s rRNA sequences, along with additional sequences taken from GenBank were analysed. Maximum likelihood consensus tree showing relations of plotted sequenceswas discussed. Sequences from the Nišava River sample differ from the other T. danubialis sequences, pointing to specific16s rRNA haplotype. In order to better access intraspecific variabilityand diversity of T. danubilis, an use of less conservative markers should be implemented.

AB  - The aim of this paper is to present the results of the ecological status assessment of the Danube River in the Iron Gate Region (rkm 849 to 1077), based on the analysis of the macrozoobenthos community. The investigation was performed in September 2011. The following metrics were used: Saprobic Index (Zelinka & Marvan), BMWP (Biological Monitoring Working Party) and ASPT (Average Score Per Taxon) indices, participation of Tubificidae (% Tubificidae), total number of taxa, number of gastropods and bivalves taxa and Shannon’s Diversity Index. Based on the value of the selected metrics, the status of the Danube in the Iron Gate stretch was assessed as moderate (class III). A total of 61 macroinvertebrate taxa were recorded. With regard to the taxa richness, the dominant components of the community were found to be Insecta, Oligochaeta and Mollusca. With respect to the percentage participation/relative abundance, Molusca and Crustacea were found to be the principal components.

AB  - As a result of freshwater fish parasitofauna investigations, throughout the past 75 years, the number of parasitic species is presented. This paper reviews the history, current state, and tendencies of the fish parasitofauna studies in Serbian open waters. Up to now, in total 170 parasitic species have been reported. Systematic parasitofauna investigations have been carried out on 54 freshwater fish species in waters of the Danube River Basin in Serbia, also in hill-mountanious watercourses, lakes and salmonid fishpond of Sjenicko-Pesterska plateau (south-west region of Serbia), Homolje area (east Serbia), and in Vlasina lake (south-east Serbia). This data review pointed that it is necessary to continue the investigation on fish parasites in Serbia. The data on freshwater fish parasites are important for evaluation of general influence on the community structure.

abstract = "As a result of freshwater fish parasitofauna investigations, throughout the past 75 years, the number of parasitic species is presented. This paper reviews the history, current state, and tendencies of the fish parasitofauna studies in Serbian open waters. Up to now, in total 170 parasitic species have been reported. Systematic parasitofauna investigations have been carried out on 54 freshwater fish species in waters of the Danube River Basin in Serbia, also in hill-mountanious watercourses, lakes and salmonid fishpond of Sjenicko-Pesterska plateau (south-west region of Serbia), Homolje area (east Serbia), and in Vlasina lake (south-east Serbia). This data review pointed that it is necessary to continue the investigation on fish parasites in Serbia. The data on freshwater fish parasites are important for evaluation of general influence on the community structure.",
