AB - In this study, the concentrations of metals and trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni,
Pb and Zn) were determined in the muscle tissue of adult roach and white bream at two different
sites in the Belgrade section of the Danube. Twenty-six fatty acids, consisting of nine saturated FA
(SFAs), seven monosaturated FA (MUFAs) and ten polysaturated FA (PUFAs), were identified. The
analysis of the concentration of metals and trace elements of the roach and white bream showed
species-specific differences in their bioaccumulation. Four of all elements analyzed (As, Hg, Ni and
Pb) correlated significantly with the changes in FA profiles in fish from both sampling sites, with the
exception of Cu, which correlated with the FA profile at the site before, and Zn, whose concentration
influenced the FA profile at the site after wastewater discharges. The lower PUFA content in the fish
from a site under higher environment pressure could indicate that the fish are stressed. The results
suggest that changes in lipid composition may be one of the protective mechanisms of cells to cope
with anthropogenic stressors.

AB - Abstract: Twenty-three morphometric characteristics of spiny-cheek crayfish Faxonus limosus from Danube, Serbia, were analyzed to describe the general body shape. Forty-eight specimens were caught in May 2022 and January 2023 and measured for morphometric variation. Also, the values of two crayfish condition indices, Fulton’s condition factor (FCF) and crayfish constant (CC), were determined. Most of the analyzed characteristics were moderately variable (CV 10-30%). Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the morphological measurements. All the variables make similar contributions to the variance of the first principal component. The highest contributions are from variables CEF and ARL.ARW, CPH, ABH, CPW, and ROW significantly contributed to the second principal component variance. The population of spiny-cheek crayfish at the investigated site has a relatively stable age structure.

AB - The stomach content of 277 Amur sleeper individuals has been analyzed to present its feeding habits. Fish were sampled using electrofishing from July to November 2017 in the Danube River drainage channel near Veliko Gradište (Serbia). Fish age was estimated by otoliths examination. Ingested prey organisms were identified to the lowest reliable taxonomic level. The biotic indices: vacuity index (VI), frequency of occurrence (F), abundance (Cn), index of importance (PV), Shannon’s diversity index (H’), and equitability index (Eh) were calculated. A total of 18 prey categories and 1144 individual prey were identified in the fish diet, dominantly aquatic macroinvertebrates. There were no significant difference in diet composition between sampling months as well as 0+, 1+, and 2+ age groups (both 3+ and 4+ had one individual). Only eight individuals were found with empty intestines, thus VI was low (2.9). In average, each fish had 4.1 prey items in their intestines. For whole sample, H′ was 1.84 and Eh was 0.64. Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, and Gastropoda were the most frequent, dominant, and abundant. The greatest diversity of prey items was recorded for fish sampled in October as well as for 2+ individuals, and the lowest for fish from August and 0+ individuals.

AB - Pikeperch of age classes 3+ and 4+ were collected from the Garaši reservoir (Serbia)
to analyze their bioindicator potential and compare their possible differences. Concentrations of
26 elements were determined in gills, muscles, and liver by inductively-coupled plasma optical
emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and of 17 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and six polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs) in muscle by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC-MS).
Histopathological changes in the liver and gills were analyzed as biomarkers of general fish health.
Only the concentrations of Cd, Na, and P in the muscles differed significantly. The OCPs and
PCBs concentrations were below the detection limits, so fish meat consumption does not pose a risk
concerning these substances. Hg and Cd exceeded the maximum allowed concentrations in some
4+ individuals, probably due to biomagnification. Gills were the most affected by metal exposure in
both age classes. Histopathological changes and indices were minor and did not differ significantly
between age classes, suggesting that pollution did not affect the morphology and structure of gills and
liver. There were no significant correlations between elemental accumulation and fish condition or
between histopathological scores. Therefore, both age classes can be used as bioindicators of pollution.

AB - This paper provides an overview of the qualitative composition and structure of the microcrustacean of the Grliško reservoir based on field research conducted from 11 June 2019 to 9 July 2019. Sampling was carried out every seven days at sub-sites with different macrofauna, using the standard hydrobiological methodology. A total of 18 zooplankton taxa were recorded, belonging to the following groups: Rotifera (1 taxon), Cladocera (12 taxa), and Copepoda (5 taxa). The largest number of taxa was found in June. The total number of taxa was almost the same in the sub-areas with a lot of macro-vegetation and without vegetation but differed in the qualitative composition of zooplankton species, spatially and temporally. Since the main purpose of the Grliško reservoir is to provide water for the population, it is necessary to constantly monitor the zooplankton, as it can be an important indicator of the state of this aquatic ecosystem.

AB - Over the last 14 years, ichthyological and ecological parameters have been monitored in
the Labudovo okno Ramsar site. This area is important for its biodiversity as it is home to many
rare and endangered plants and animal species. A total of 3861 fish specimens were sampled and
measured at six sampling sites four times during the sampling period. An analysis of biodiversity
indexes, relative biomass (kg/ha), and relative annual production (kg/ha) was carried out to assess
the effectiveness of existing conservation measures. The results obtained show a trend decline in
biodiversity, relative biomass, and relative annual production. This indicates a biodiversity conservation
problem that should be addressed through other mechanisms in addition to the principles of the
Ramsar Convention.

AB - The aim of the present study was to determine the current status of the fish community structure and
composition in the Ribnica River. The Ribnica River, a tributary of the Kolubara River, is classified as
a Type 3 watercourse according to the current national regulations. A total of 347 fish specimens
were collected and analysed, and seven fish species were identified. Over 60% of the fish community
consists of the species Barbus balcanicus and Alburnoides bipunctatus, and the community has high
diversity and Evenness. The conservation status of the present fish species was also reviewed, and
three identified fish species are protected by national and international regulations. The occurrence of
Sabanejewia balcanica is very interesting. This fish species is strictly protected by national legislation
as well as by the Bern Convention (Annex III) and the Habitats Directive (Annex II). With the
presented study results we would like to point out the importance and conservation of these types of
watercourses. As a result of anthropogenic pressures, potential impacts in the form of habitat
alteration and degradation are expected, which may lead to threats to local fish populations.

AB - The aim of the present study was to determine two antioxidant enzymes in roach caught at
two sites with different anthropogenic pressure. Fish were sampled in the Danube at Veliko
Ratno ostrvo (VRO), “the reference point”, and Višnjica (VIS), the site with intensive
pollution. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were measured
in the gills of the fish. A statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was found in the
activity of both enzymes in fish from site VIS compared to site VRO. These results indicate
signs of stress in fish from the area with intense anthropogenic activities.

AB - The Medjuvršje reservoir is a highly modified water body on the Zapadna Morava River by the construction of a hydroelectric power plant. According to the national regulation it belongs to type 2 watercourses, i.e. large rivers with mineral substrates of medium grain size. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of the Medjuvršje reservoir using bioindicative properties of benthic macroinvertebrates, taking into consideration their community composition. Macrozoobenthos were collected from two sites in the littoral zone of the reservoir using a standard hand net following the standard methodology (EN 27828). Specimens were sorted and identified under a stereo microscope using the appropriate identification keys. Assessment of the reservoir’s ecological potential was carried out based on the class boundaries for Type 2 rivers using several biotic parameters calculated from AQEM (2002). The representatives of Oligochaeta, Mollusca, Odonata and Chironomidae were most abundant in the benthic community. The larval stages of the insects Ephemeroptera, Heteroptera, Coleoptera and Trichoptera were recorded only from the microhabitats with abundant macrophyte vegetation. Within this study, we also recorded the first finding of a freshwater sponge for this type of water body. Based on the macrozoobenthos composition and according to analyzed indices (saprobic index Zelinka & Marvan, BMWP and ASPT score, Diversity index Shannon-Weaner, Total number of taxa, share of Oligochaeta-Tubificidae) the ecological potential was assessed as good (II class of Water quality). However, when the EPT index was considered, the status deteriorated to IV (site 1) or V class (site 2) as poor or bad status.

AB - The development of nonlethal methods for the monitoring of environmental contamination is essential to minimize the negative effects on studied species and communities. Fish scales and fin clips can be used as nonlethal indicators of water quality given that they are in direct contact with the environment and can accumulate high concentrations of metals and trace elements. Fin clipping causes minimal harm to fish and it does not affect fish growth or survival. In this study, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn concentrations were measured by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in scales, fins, and muscle of common bream ( Abramis brama ), white bream ( Blicca bjoerkna ), wels catfish ( Silurus glanis ), northern pike ( Esox lucius ), and pikeperch ( Sander lucioperca ) from the Danube River. The analysis showed a positive correlation for Hg between scales and muscle in pikeperch. Anal fin and muscle were positively correlated in white bream for Hg, in wels catfish for Cu, and in northern pike and pikeperch for As. The results suggest that scales and fins have a potential to be used as indicators of muscle tissue contamination with As, Cu, and Hg, depending on species' ecological traits.

AB - Pollution of freshwater ecosystems by discharges of untreated municipal wastewater represents a
major threat for aquatic organisms and thus human health. Serbia discharges wastewater without
previous treatment. In recent years, studies have shown that fatty acids are sensitive to alterations in
organism homeostasis, supporting their use for biomarkers of toxicant exposure. Fish species are an
important source of biologically valuable proteins, fats, fat-soluble vitamins, and n-3polyunsaturated
fatty acids. The purpose of this study was to investigate the diferences of fatty acid composition in
fish from urban sites of the Danube River. A total number of eight specimens of roach (Rutilus rutilus)
were collected from two localities - Višnjica, which is exposed to the discharge of the largest
wastewater collector in the city of Belgrade and Veliko Ratno Ostrvo, which is at the confluence of
Danube and Sava River, and is considered as control location. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were
analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 28 fatty acids were found
in the muscle tissue of the studied fish species. The results showed no significant differences in fatty
acid profile between polluted and control localities. All examined fish species contained essential
fatty acids (EPA, ALA, DHA) with DHA levels significantly higher in specimens from control site. The
proportion of total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) was almost
the same while polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were higher in control specimens. It is shown by
previous studies that the main reason of changes in PUFAs is that they could be oxidized under
oxidative stress conditions induced by metals or organic compounds. Even though anthropogenic
load exerted on Višnjica locality has not significantly affected the fish fatty acid profile, changes in
PUFAs indicated the presence of some xenobiotics in their environment.

AB - Accumulation of Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Se, Si, Sr, and Zn was analyzed in gills, liver, gonads, and muscle of European chub (Squalius cephalus), Cactus roach (Rutilus virgo), and pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) from Zlatar reservoir (Serbia) using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The highest concentrations of Cu in liver as well as Ba, Ca, Fe, Mn, Na, P, and Sr in gills were detected in all fish species, while the lowest concentrations of Cu, Fe, Mn, Na, and Zn were detected in muscle. Pikeperch had significantly lower concentrations of Ba in all tissues compared to the other species, as well as Fe, P, and Sr in muscle, K, Mg, Mn, Sr, and Zn in gills, and Fe in gonads. European chub had significantly higher concentrations of Ca, Cu, and Zn in muscle, Cu in liver, and Cr and Cu in gonads compared to Cactus roach and pikeperch. Cd concentration in one individual of Cactus roach exceeded the maximum allowed concentration. The muscle was exposed to the lowest pressure of metal pollution in all species, and European chub accumulated more metals compared to the other species. There is no significant health risk due to consumption of investigated species. A major hazard index (HI) contributor in all species was Hg. According to the target carcinogenic risk factor (TR), target hazard quotient (THQ), and HI, men are under lower health risk compared to the women. The TR and THQ for As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn as well as HI values were higher for European chub compared to the other species. On the other hand, THQ for Hg was highest for pikeperch.

Naididae (Limnodrilus spp., T. tubifex, S. lacustris, N. proboscidea).

AB - Food and feeding habits of white bream (Blicca bjoerkna) and common roach (Rutilus rutilus)
specimens sampled from the Belgrade section of the Danube River in April 2021 were investigated.
Stomach contents of 20 individuals of both cyprinid fish species were analyzed and no individual had
an empty stomach. There was a small difference in the stomach contents of these two analyzed fish.
The food items in stomach showed a wide spectrum, ranging from crustacean, molluscs to aquatic
insects. Therefore, analyzed fish species displayed an omnivorous feeding. Based on the obtained
data, the indices of frequency, abundance and significance for each of the identified prey categories
were calculated. Trichoptera (aquatic insects) and Gammaridae (Crustacea) were found to be the
most common and abundant prey utilized by all analyzed species. The attained results, since these are
relatively small samples collected during one monthly outing (April), can be considered preliminary
and require further research.

AB - The present study aimed to assess the lipid peroxidation (LPO) level under the different environmental
conditions on the common roach (Rutilus rutilus). Lipid peroxides were measured in fish collected
within the Danube River at two points: Veliko Ratno ostrvo (P1), which was considered a reference
point, and Višnjica (P2), the point with compromised water quality. A significant difference is
revealed between the points suggesting signs of stress in fish from the Višnjica point. Concerning that
Višnjica experiences intense environmental pressure, we noticed an increased concentration of lipid
peroxides in the fish liver, compared to those individuals from the P1 (p < 0.05). A significantly
increased level of LPO in fish from P2 can be the indication of the presence of pro-oxidant stressors
that through oxidative stress lead to oxidation of cell lipids in fish. These results give a good base for
R. rutilus to be a bioindicator of a disturbed environment.

AB - Istraživanja zajednica riba obavljena su u oktobru 2019. godine u akumulacijama Uvac,
Zlatar i Radoinja na području Specijalnog rezervata prirode ″Uvac″. Ukupno je registrovano
prisustvo 12 vrsta iz pet familija. U svim akumulacijama zabeležena je dominacija ciprinidnih
vrsta.
odgovara β mezosaprobnim vodama II klase boniteta (umereno zagađene vode).
AB - Ichthyofaunistic surveys were conducted in October at Uvac, Zlatar, and Radoinja reservoirs
in the area of Special natural reserve ″Uvac″. The presence of 12 species from five families
was recorded. The dominance of cyprinid species was recorded in all reservoirs. The values
of the saprobic index (S) varied from 1.87 (Radoinja) to 1.95 (Uvac), which corresponds
to β mesosaprobic waters of the II quality class (moderately polluted waters). The greatest
diversity was recorded for the Uvac reservoir, and the lowest for Radoinja. Radoinja reservoir
had an ecological potential that belongs to the III-IV class, while the other reservoirs had a
II-III class. The ecological status in the studied reservoirs is satisfactory.

AB - Discharges of wastewater, enriched with inorganic and organic chemicals, may induce
pollution of the aquatic environment and thus affect biological communities. The main
problem considering pollution of the Danube River in Belgrade represents the
discharges of wastewaters without any previous treatment. This study aims to assess
the distribution of pollutants (metals and trace elements, PCBs and pesticides) in the
tissues of two commercial fish species (common bream and pike-perch) belonging to
the different trophic levels. The metal and trace element concentrations were assessed
by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) while organochlorine
pesticides (PCBs and pesticides) were assessed by gas chromatography with electron
capture detectors (GC-ECD). Detected As, Cd, Pb and Hg concentrations in the fish
muscle were below the maximum allowed concentrations (MAC) established by both
the EU and the Republic of Serbia. Gills significantly differ in the concentrations of
the most assessed metals and trace elements while liver differs among species in
concentrations of As, Cd, Hg and Zn. Detected ndl PCB and pesticides concentrations
in both analyzed species were below MAC established by both the EU and the
Republic of Serbia. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in ndl PCB
and pesticides concentrations among analyzed species. In this study it was shown that
high position in the food chain doesn’t indicate higher tissue contamination, even
though arsenic, cadmium, mercury and iron were in higher concentrations in liver and
gills of pike-perch.

AB - Microplastic (MP) pollution has attracted wide attention since the production and use of plastic materials has increased worldwide. However, there is a lack of information about MPs in freshwater ecosystems, given that they are less studied compared to marine ones. Fish species are of special interest since they are utilized in the human diet. Among various sources, synthetic textiles play a dominant role in microplastic emissions, especially in the form of short fibers. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of MPs in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of the freshwater fish species common bream (Abramis brama Linnaeus, 1758) from the Danube River (1169 river km) in the area of the city of Belgrade, Serbia (44° 49′ 54.48″ N, 20° 27′ 23.68″ E). A total of nine specimens were collected, and the whole GIT was removed. Digestion of organic content was performed with a combined alkaline-oxidative treatment (10% KOH and Triton X-100; 30% H2O2). Filtered samples were visually observed under a binocular microscope. A total number of 136 plastic particles were detected, all belonging to a class of fibers. The size of the particles varied from 0.5 mm to 50 mm. The obtained results are in accordance with previous studies that reported fibers as the dominant shape of MPs in fish. The given results represent a contribution to the research of the MPs' occurrence in freshwater species. However, there is a need for further studies involving other fish species.
Beograda, Srbija (44° 49ʹ 54.48ʺ N, 20° 27ʹ 23.68ʺ E). Ukupno je prikupljeno devet uzoraka, a
izvađen je cijeli GIT. Digestija organskog sadržaja provedena je kombiniranim alkalno-
oksidativnim tretmanom (10% KOH i Triton X-100; 30% H2O2). Filtrirani uzorci vizualno su
promatrani pod binokularnim mikroskopom. Otkriveno je ukupno 136 plastičnih čestica, koje sve
pripadaju klasi vlakana.
Navedeni rezultati predstavljaju doprinos istraživanju prisutnosti MPs u slatkovodnim vrstama.

AB - Northern pike specimens of 0+, 1+, and 2+ age classes were collected in June 2013 from the Vizelj channel near Belgrade (Serbia). Inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry (ICP-OES) and atomic absorption spectrometer SpectrAA 220 were used for analyzing concentrations of As, Cr, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Sr, Pb, and Zn, as well as Hg in muscle, gills, and liver. Metal pollution index (MPI) was calculated. Concentrations of As, Cd, Co, and Pb were below the limit of detection. Concentrations of Cu, Hg, and Zn in muscle did not exceed the maximum allowed concentrations. The gills were tissue which was most affected by pollution. The highest concentrations of Fe in muscle, Cr and Fe in gills, and Hg, Sr, and Zn in liver were recorded in 0+ individuals, as well as Zn in gills of 2+ individuals. On contrary, the lowest concentrations were recorded for Zn in gills of 0+ individuals, Hg in gills of 1+ individuals, and Fe in muscle, Cr and Sr in gills, and Zn in liver of 2+ individuals. Regarding age classes, 2+ juveniles had the highest MPI values for all tissues. Correlations between the metal(loid) accumulation and fish condition were not significant, as well as between fish length and weight and Cu and Hg in muscle, Cu, Hg, and Sr in gills, and Cu, Cr, and Fe in liver. Results indicated that young individuals were more sensitive to pollution, but older fish showed higher overall bioaccumulation of toxic elements analyzed in this study.

AB - Vimba bream (Vimba vimba) individuals were collected from the Danube River near Belgrade, from May 2016 to May 2017. Samples of muscle and liver tissue were analyzed for concentrations of 25 elements (macro-, micro-, and toxic elements) using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). For both tissues, the highest concentrations of most elements were observed in late spring/early summer (months of May and June). Majority of statistically significant correlations between elements were positive in both tissues. Contributions of Ca, K, and Mg to human diet were in a similar range. The lowest contribution of all macroelements was observed for Na, while the contribution of Se was well above the recommended dietary allowance for this element. Levels of detected elements were well below MAC values prescribed by national and international regulations. The highest value of Hg liver/muscle index (>1) was observed in August, which could indicate a higher contamination of the sampling location in that month. Se:Hg molar ratio never drops below 1, which could indicate that Hg toxicity is prevented. THQ values showed little variation thought the year and were well below the threshold of 1, with the exception of THQ for Al in May (0.92). This element also strongly affects the hazard index.

AB - In recent decades, the Amur sleeper (Perccottus glenii) is one of the most impressive east-to-west invaders of European inland waters, but there are insufficient data on its biology in the countries it has entered. Specimens of two sets of samples from November 2015 (n=25) and October 2016 (n=39) were caught in the Danube River channel near Veliko Gradište (Serbia) by electrofishing. Thirty morphometric and eight meristic characteristics of the collected fish were measured with the aim of describing the general body shape in more detail using the “point-to-point” method. This is the first attempt to obtain morphometric and meristic characteristics of Amur sleeper caught in Serbia. The results revealed a relatively low variability in the morphometric and meristic characters of the studied population. When compared to other studies, there was a great variability of the studied characteristics between geographically distant European populations that inhabit different water body types. Female fish had more robust bodies compared to males of the same length, while males had longer pectoral, anal and dorsal fins. Additionally, 2+ individuals had more robust heads and jaws, as well as longer anterior parts of the body compared to 1+ individuals of the same size.

AB - Parasitic species of freshwater fishes represent a large group of organisms including either adults or larval stages. Macroparasites - Nematode (round worms) infect many different species of aquacultured and wild fish. Adult forms are typically found in fish digestive tract.
The present work covers the investigation of nematode parasites of fish from the Belgrade section of the Danube River. During ichthyoparasitological study have been collected and examined 22 freshwater fish species from families Cyprinidae (14), Esocidae (1), Percidae (4), Centrarchidae (1), Gadidae (1) and Siluridae (1). A total of 802 fish specimens have been examined and 54.86% were infected. In intestine of 12 infected fish species have been found 9 species of Nematode parasites - Hysterothylacium bidentatum (Linstow, 1899), Contracaecum siniperca (Dogiel & Achmerov, 1946), Contracaecum sp. juvenile (Railliet & Henry, 1912), Cammalanus lacustris (Zoega, 1776), Cammalanus truncatus (Rudolphi, 1814), Camallanus sp. juvenile (Railliet & Henry, 1915), Philometra rischta (Skrjabin, 1923), Rhabdochona denudata (Dujardin, 1845) and Rhabdochona hellichi (Šrámek, 1901). During investigation, species Philometra rischta has been marked off (“heat parasite”), infesting a four fish species (Blicca bjoerkna, Leuciscus idus, Perca fluviatilis, Sander lucioperca) with prevalence of infestation 1-17. Fish species with great number of nematode parasite in intestine was Lota lota (four), while other were infected with one or two parasites.
