AB - Due to their high water temperature and special water chemistry, thermal springs offer unique ecological conditions for microbial communities. They are considered to be very interesting and important habitats for the study of algal flora, including diatom biodiversity. However, their occurrence in Serbian thermal springs is scarcely investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the diversity of the diatom community in five
thermal springs in central Serbia (Vrujci spa, Bukovička spa, Omoljica, Ovčanska spa and Poljane). Samples were collected from natural thermal springs except from Bukovička spa, where they were taken
from the tap. In Vrujci spa, samples were collected both from the tap and from the natural spring. During the autumn and winter in 2023, a total of 11 biofilm samples were collected with a sterile scalpel. The
samples were treated with HCl and KMnO4 in the laboratory, afterwards permanent diatom slides were made. The Carl Zeiss AxioImager.M1 light microscope with DIC optics, AxioCam MRc5 and AxioVision4.9
software were used for microscopic analysis. During survey, in total 82 diatom taxa belonging to 33 genera were identified. The most taxon-rich genera were Nitzschia and Navicula with 13 and 10 taxa, respectively. Our preliminary results show that the samples from the Vrujci spa have
the highest diatom diversity (62 taxa) and from Bukovička the lowest (5 taxa). In the Vrujci spa, 40 taxa were identified in the natural thermal spring, while 22 were recorded at the tap. The highest temperature
(25.1°C) was measured at this site compared to the other thermal springs. The dominant taxa were Staurosira venter and Achnanthidium straubianum, which distinguishes this natural thermal spring from the others. At the tap in Vrujci, the dominance of Navicula veneta, Nitzschia palea and Achnanthidium microcephalum showed that the communities at natural and artificial sites differ greatly. In Bukovička spa, the most abundant taxa included N. palea and N. veneta. In the Omoljica thermal spring, 19 taxa were identified with dominance of N. palea, followed by Gomphonema parvulum and N. veneta with slightly lower abundances. In Poljane, N. palea and A. microcephalum were dominant from 11 recorded taxa. In Ovčanska spa, Nitzschia thermaloides was found to be predominant. In addition, the other 18 taxa found at this thermal spring occur with very low abundances. Additional taxonomic insights are required to more precisely define the diatom communities and the ecology of the taxa inhabiting thermal springs. Besides, occurrence of rare species can be expected in this types of extreme habitats.

AB - Some of the direct and indirect environmental impacts are related to the construction of fish farms (FFs) and small hydropower plants (SHPs) around the world. Diatom communities are one of the best bioindicators of various pressures like eutrophication, chemical and organic pollution. The main objective of this study was to examine the influence of SHP and FF on diatom community and water quality of the Prištavica River in Serbia. A total of 184 epilithic diatom taxa from 55 genera were identified. Sites after the FF and SHP are distinguished by the same dominant species in each season. Compared to the other sites, species diversity in summer was lower at site after SHP. In terms of spatial dynamics, four groups of taxa are distinguished. Some centric taxa were associated with sites downstream the FF and SHP. Altered physical and chemical parameters were documented at sites downstream of constructions. Water quality of the Prištavica River ranged from high to bad depending on diatom index, season, and sampling site. A greater difference in diatom index values was found at sites upstream and downstream of the FF, than at sites upstream and downstream of the SHP.

AB - The Sava River Basin is a major drainage basin of southeastern Europe, significantly influenced by anthropogenic activities. Our study was focused on diatom communities as an indicator of the ecological status of running waters. We investigated over 937km of the Sava River at 19 sampling sites. Benthic diatom communities and 17 diatom indices were analyzed along with a large set of environmental parameters. CCA revealed that the most important elements along the spatial gradient were As and Si. Our results show that the species Navicula recens (Lange-Bert.) Lange-Bertalot and Eolimna minima (Grunow) Lange-Bertalot are very abundant at downstream localities where the highest concentrations of As were measured. The number of motile diatoms increased along the nutrient gradient, i.e. with Si availability. Correlations between diatom indices and selected environmental factors showed that temperature, As, Si and Fe are in significant negative correlation with most diatom indices. Analysis revealed the influence of As and metals in water on diatoms, although their concentrations did not exceed environmental standards. While our findings do not confirm that diatom indices reveal the intensity of pressures solely caused by nutrient and/or organic pollutants, they suggest that in moderately polluted large rivers benthic diatoms are good bioindicators of multiple pressures, and that diatom indices could serve as indicators of the level of overall degradation of an ecosystem.

AB - Phytoplankton analysis is an essential part in water quality monitoring and predicting changes in aquatic ecosystems. In this study we investigated structure and diversity of algal communities along the Serbian stretch of the Sava River. We detected 109 species in four sampling localities (Bosut, Sremska Mitrovica, Jarak and Makiš). Species richness increases from Bosut to Jarak. However, a sudden decrease of species richness was recorded in the Makiš locality, probably due to increased pollution. Divisive numerical classification separates species with relatively narrow distribution (that are grouped in three clusters) from more common species (that form four clusters). Correspondence analysis clearly separates upper-stream sites (Bosut and Sremska Mitrovica) from down-stream sites Jarak and Makiš.

AB - The main objective of this paper is to report the desmid taxa identified from four Serbian peat bogs: Pešter, Daić Lake on Mt. Golija, Crvene pode on Mt. Tara and Horgoš. Samples were collected in the period from 2007 to 2011. In total, 220 desmid taxa from 22 genera were identified. The most species-rich genera are Cosmarium (81), Staurastrum (38) and Closterium (31). Of the total number, 66 desmid taxa are new for the Serbian desmid flora.
