AB  - We examined the spread and distribution in the Danube River of a new alien gastropod species, Clathrocaspia knipowitschii (Makarov, 1938) (Gastropoda: Hydrobiidae: Caspiinae). First findings of this species for Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia are presented. Clathrocaspia knipowitschii was initially found in 2013 in the Iron Gate stretch of the Danube River at the border between Romania and Serbia. In 2019 and 2020, the species was found at several sites in the lower Danube in Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria, and also upstream in the middle Hungarian Danube in high population densities. The species appears to have spread along more than 800 km in six years. This finding together with the available abundance data indicates that C. knipowitschii is potentially an invasive species, but further observations are needed.

AB  - The River Danube has played a pivotal role in the range expansion of Ponto-Caspian faunal elements in recent decades; therefore, the monitoring of its biota is of high scientific and conservation importance. In this publication, the records on peracarid crustaceans yielded by the macrozoobenthos samples for the 4th Joint Danube Survey (2019) are presented. Altogether 21 species (16 Amphipoda, 2 Isopoda, 3 Mysida) were recorded at 44 sites in the Danube (between river km 2581 and 18) and its major tributaries. Invasive Ponto-Caspian species showed the most common occurrence, some of which (Chelicorophium robustum, Chelicorophium sowinskyi, and Paramysis lacustris) have been observed beyond their previously known distribution. Nevertheless, the records of Gammarus spp. in the German Danube section might potentially indicate an improvement in the status of these native species in the region. The survey also confirmed the intensifying colonization of the River Tisza by Ponto-Caspian species, showing the first record of C. robustum in the river as well as additional occurrences of the previous invader, Pontogammarus robustoides. Besides these notable records, the dataset will also serve as a useful reference for potential further range expansions.

Invasive alien species in the Danube River Basin: Results of the JDS4

AB  - The co-existential pattern of native and alien species was investigated along the Danube River Basin (DRB) during JDS4 (2019). A total of 51 JDS4 sites was sampled in the entire Danube River, and additional sites in the Lower Danube. The standard operational procedures adopted by ICPDR, and – for the first time – eDNA-based tools were used for the sampling. A smartphone application ‘Invasive Alien Species in Europe’ developed by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre and specifically updated to include invasive alien species concerning the DRB was additionally applied for data collection.
Six alien aquatic plants, 35 benthic macroinvertebrates and 17 fish species were recorded in DRB during the survey. Two groups of invasive species should be mentioned: 1) Ponto-Caspian species that do not have to cross very strong hydro- and geographical barriers during their spreading; and 2) Species that cross large geographical distances to arrive to the DRB (originated from North America and Asia). An overall decrease of the former abundance of Corbicula fluminea was recognised in some Danube sections. An extreme large amount of Ponto-Caspian amphipods was detected in the Upper Danube: Echinogammarus sp. and Gammaridae gen. sp., representing one third of the overall individual number of the macroinvertebrates detected in the Upper Danube (Austria). New Decapoda species (Procambarus clarkii, Pacifastacus leniusculus) appeared at new locations of the Middle Danube, indicating their recent spreading. A new Ponto-Caspian snail species (Clathrocaspia knipowitschii) was distributed along extended sections of the Lower and Middle Danube. The magnificent bryozoan Pectinatella magnifica was recorded for the first time in the Bulgarian shoreline zone of the Danube River. The (e)DNA-based detection revealed the presence of 5 macroinvertebrate species which were not recorded by other methods. The level of biocontamination of the Danube River was estimated as moderate to high, with higher levels for the Upper (high to severe biocontamination) and Middle

Danube (moderate to high biocontamination), in comparison to the Lower Danube (low biocontamination). The results show that DRB is under considerable influence of biological invasions. The number of identified alien species has increased over three times since 2007. The (e)DNA-based method has proved to be an effective additional tool in aquatic IAS monitoring. The smartphone app may greatly facilitate the access and update of IAS records for management and control purposes and contribute to IAS awareness raising in the Danube countries by involving actively the citizens in future surveys.

AB  - Molluscs are diverse and abundant component of macroinvertebrate assemblages inhabiting different types of river ecosystems. According to the literature data, a total of 143 freshwater mollusc taxa have been recorded for freshwater ecosystems of Montenegro. Gastropoda was represented by 120 taxa from 14 families, while the Bivalvia was represented by 23 species from 4 families. The typology of river and lake water bodies of Montenegro has been carried out according to the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). In this study we used a simple river typology of Montenegrin watercourses based on two descriptors, the river size and the altitude. Our preliminary result revealed that the obtained mollusc assemblage clusters satisfactorily describe two main river types, the lowland portions of the large rivers in the Adriatic Sea Basin and the large- and medium-sized rivers at the mid-altitude. For a more confident water body typology based on mollusc assemblages, additional studies are highly needed.

AB  - Faxonius limosus (formerly known as Orconectes limosus in the literature) is an invasive alien crayfish
species with the largest distribution range in Europe. The first record of this species from the Danube
River in Serbia was near Apatin in 2002, and since then it has expanded its range along the entire
Serbian section. The presence of F. limosus was studied during a twelve-year period (2007–2019),
covering different types of water bodies in Serbia (rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs and ponds). The
species was detected at seven new localities along the main course of the Danube River, denoting that
its colonisation has developed in two directions, upstream and downstream, respectively. Along with its
expansion in the Danube River, the occurrence of F. limosus has been recorded in all main tributaries ‒
the rivers Sava, Tisa and Velika Morava, as well as the Danube–Tisa–Danube Canal (DTD Canal). Due
to its rapid dispersal rate and negative effect on native crayfish species, urgent measures are needed to
monitor and prevent further spread of this invasive alien species in the Serbian inland waters and the
Danube River Basin.

Forward selection (FS), canonical correspondence analyses (CCA), the Spearman correlation coefficient (SC) and BIO-ENV analysis (to detect synergistic effects) were used to identify the relations between the macroinvertebrate dataset and selected biological metrics with RBS pollutants. Of the 20 analysed pollutants (preselected based on NORMAN network methodology), seven (2,4-dinitrophenol, chloroxuron, bromacil, dimefuron, amoxicillin, bentazon and fluoranthene) were found to significantly correlate with macroinvertebrate communities. BIO-ENV analysis revealed 3 subsets of environmental variables that were in high correlation with the biota resemblance matrix, consisting mainly of a combination of the above-mentioned pollutants. Our results indicate that there are significant correlations between chemical determinants and aquatic biota. Moreover, this study contributes to the validation of the methodology used for prioritization of RBS pollutants proposed by the NORMAN network.

The effectiveness of detecting taxa corresponded well with an inshore–offshore gradient in sampling (i.e., distance from shore). Nevertheless, each method (i.e., littoral multihabitat sampling, kick and sweep sampling, and deep water dredging) contributed to some degree to overall taxa richness and species composition. Sampling in different depth zones characterized different assemblages, and consequently, inshore–offshore position was at least as important determinant of assemblage structure as longitudinal position of sampling sites in the river. Although we found significant congruency in the spatial variability of assemblages among the sampling methods, the relationships were only moderate. Our study on the large Danube River confirms studies from smaller rivers in other geographic regions that littoral monitoring provides higher taxa richness and more responsive changes to longitudinal gradients than deep water samples. Nevertheless, it also shows that sampling in different depth zones provides supplementary information on assemblage structure. Understanding changes in macroinvertebrate assemblages related to differences in sampling method is crucial to improve the bioassessment and environmental management of large rivers.

were therefore monitored in all previously conducted Joint Danube Surveys (JDS). The methods
applied were differing due to availability of devices, financial issues and the scientific focus. While in
JDS1 grabs were used to investigate hard rocky substrates (Literathy et al., 2002), in JDS2 air-lift
samples were taken to study the faunal composition of deep water habitats (Liška et al., 2008). During
JDS3 a modified Multi-Habitat-Sampling (MHS) approach has been performed to highlight the
importance of specific micro-habitats in terms of biodiversity and additionally as a sound basis for
river restoration efforts and water management issues in general. The data gained from JDS3 can be
seen as an important documentation of the current distribution of specific taxa and a completion
regarding faunistics of earlier studies, (Russev, 1998; Slobodnik et al., 2005; Csányi & Paunovic,
2006) and of all previous JDS expeditions. The results will significantly contribute to the currently
ongoing discussions regarding the WFD compliant assessment methods of large rivers either for field
work as well as the analysing aspects.

AB  - Invasive alien species (IAS) have been recognized as one of the major threats to native biodiversity in the Danube Basin. The aim of this paper is to present the state of the art regarding IAS along the Danube River and its main tributaries. The work is mainly based on the results of the Danube research expeditions, Joint Danube Survey 2 (2007), Joint Danube Survey 1 (2001) and AquaTerra Danube Survey (2004), but other recent data on IAS were taken into consideration, as well. The complexity of the problem with IAS could be illustrated by the fact that six species of neophytes, 19 alien macroinvertebrates and 15 non-native fish species were recorded during JDS2. The total number of alien species recorded, as well as their frequency and abundance along the Danube, indicates high level of biological contamination. Despite the fact that IAS have been in the focus of the research in the Danube Basin for the last 15 years, we still do not have enough data on their exact distribution and migration. A lot of additional work concerning detection, monitoring, assessment of their impacts and management is necessary in order to deal with the IAS problem properly in river basin management planning.

AB  - The River Danube plays a central role in the spread of Ponto-Caspian   species as a part of the so-called southern invasion corridor   (Danube-Main-Rhine system); therefore, changes in its peracarid fauna   (comprising the bulk of invasives) merit special attention. Altogether 17 amphipod, 7 mysid, 3 isopod, and one cumacean species were   recorded at 55 sites investigated between Ulm (river km 2581) and the   Delta. Recent large-distance expansion of additional Ponto-Caspian   species was not observed, but three species (Chelicorophium robustum, C.   sowinskyi, and Echinogammarus trichiatus) have been able to shorten   their distributional gap in the Middle Danube, E. trichiatus being   recorded for the first time in Serbia. Ponto-Caspian peracarids are   still gradually advancing in the German section, as well, implying   retreat of native Gammarus spp., and impeding the spread of   non-Ponto-Caspian invaders. On the contrary, some Ponto-Caspian species   seem to have declined in certain river sections; Dikerogammarus   bispinosus was entirely missing in the Lower Danube, and several species   characteristic of the lower reaches had been recorded previously much   farther upstream (most notably Chelicorophium maeoticum and   Obesogammarus crassus). The analysis of current and historical   distributional patterns revealed that the crucial step in the   large-scale spread of Ponto-Caspian species is crossing the section   between Baja and the Sava estuary (rkm similar to 1480-1170) -   characterized by an unfavorable combination of relatively strong   currents and fine bed material - by passive transport. Presence   immediately downstream of this section does not appear to promote   further expansion in most of the cases; the source region of   large-distance dispersal is most likely the Delta, implying that   potential future invaders cannot be identified based on their previous   expansion in the lower reaches of the river.
