AB - The cerebellum is involved in the control of motor and nonmotor
functions. Refined and innovative experimental and clinical approaches,
starting from anatomy and including functional magnetic resonance
imaging (fMRI), have allowed researchers to store extensive information
on the cerebellar contributions to motor control and also helped them to
understanding cerebellar nonmotor functions. Does the cerebellum process
exclusively cerebral information related to certain specificactions, or
does it also process some forms of information independent of such
relation? At present, researchers are close to evaluating how the
cerebellum is active during resolution of cognitive tasks. Various
therapy lines in perspective, from cerebellar stimulation to cerbellar
grafts and artificial cerebellum, are of particular significance, as
they can restore lost brain functions in animal models and repair in
   sufficient brain processes in patients.

AB - Cerebellar involvement in cognitive functions has been revealed in
numerous anatomical, clinical and neuroimaging studies and several
hypotheses about potential the role of the cerebellum in higher level
brain function have been established. The aim of this study was to show
involvement of the cerebellum in simple cognitive tasks. For this
matter, we contrasted two tasks from the same semantic domain with
specific cognitive content and level of practice: counting forward and
counting backward. Twelve volunteers participated in this fMRI study and
they were asked to perform both tasks within the same number range (1 to
30 and vice versa). Results showed greater activation in the right
cerebellum for the task of counting forward than for counting backward,
while for counting backward greater activation was found in prefrontal
cortex, supplementary motor area, and anterior cingulate of both
hemispheres. Our results correlate with already established hypotheses
about cerebellar role in precise and smooth control, not only in
well-trained motor but in well trained cognitive tasks as well.

AB - In this study, we investigated the presence of long-range correlation effects in the electrocortical activity of rats using the Hurst exponent (H) calculated by dispersion analysis (DA) and an aggregated variance method (AGV). A slow decline of the autocorrelation function during time expansion and the existence of a correlation between distant time points of electrocorticograms (ECoGs) were shown to be typical of various pathophysiological states. In these cases, the H values were within a 0.5 < H < 1 range. A particularly slow decay of the autocorrelation function is typical of a long-range dependence (LRD). We found that ECoGs after i.p. administrations of camphor essential oil or its main constituent, 1,8-cineole, included attacks of uncontrolled electrical discharges and showed the presence of long-range correlation effects. Such findings are in agreement with recent data obtained by other authors and suggest that initiation of seizures can be predicted by certain ECoG indices. We estimated the critical period where the H values for ECoGs containing uncontrolled electrical discharges continuously increased within a few minutes before the attack. We believe that the AGV demonstrates certain advantages over DA in calculations of the H.

AB - Exposure to aluminium during gestation causes changes in mammalian brain development and behavior. Our aim was to perform spectral analysis on electrocortical activity of Sprague Dawley male pups (30±3 days of age) whose mothers were treated with aluminium during gestation and lactation. There was a higher presence of power spectra in the delta range of parietal electrocortical activity, a lower presence in the theta range and increased values of the parameter DT as the ratio of delta to theta range in pups indirectly exposed to aluminium (whose mothers were drinking a 0.5% water solution of aluminium chloride during the gestation and lactation periods), compared to controls.

AB - The features of rat cerebral and cerebellar electrocortical activity (ECoG) under different types of anaesthesia (nembutal. ketamine or zoletil) were examined by the distribution of spectral entropy across frequency bands of ECoG and by calculation of fractal dimension determined on the basis of Higuchi's algorithm. Spectral entropy, as a measure of activity, in the case of cerebrum had greater values than the spectral entropy of cerebellum in low frequency ranges, regardless of the type or applied anesthetic. Various anesthetics evoked different effects on spectral entropy of electrocortical activity: spectral entropy of delta range greatly dominated under nembutal anesthesia, while ketamine or zoletil appeared to affect the spectral entropy of higher frequency ranges. The pronounced effect of ketamine or zoletil anesthesia on spectral entropy of higher frequency was confirmed by the higher values of Higucihi's fractal dimension (ED) of ECoGs, with a tendency of higher ED values in cerebellar activity than cerebral activity.

AB - We investigated the rat brain activity in acute seizures evoked by camphor essential oil or its main constituent 1,8-cineole by wavelet (primarily) and fractal analysis. Experiments were performed on anesthetized animals before and after intraperitoneal camphor oil or cineole administration. The properties of frequency bands in pre-ictal, ictal and inter-ictal stages have been determined by wavelet analysis. The domination of 6 frequency band was confirmed in obtained brain activities, which participate with approximate to 45% of mean relative wavelet energy (MRWE) in control signals and arise up to approximate to 76% MRWE in energy spectrum during the ictal stage (after drug administration). Other frequency bands decreased during ictal stage and arised in inter-ictal stage. There was a dose-dependent response of cineole effect: increase in cineole concentration leaded to the higher values of relative wavelet energy (RWE) of delta frequency band while there were slight changes of the mean fractal dimension (FD) values as a measure of system complexity.

AB - The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of camphor essential oil on rat cerebral cortex activity by fractal analysis. Fractal dimension (FD) values of the parietal electrocortical activity were calculated before and after intra-peritoneal administration of camphor essential oil (450-675 μl/kg) in anesthetized rats. Camphor oil induced seizure-like activity with single and multiple spiking of high amplitudes in the parietal electrocorticogram and occasional clonic limb convulsions. The FD values of cortical activity after camphor oil administration increased on the average. Only FD values of cortical ECoG sequences were lower than those before camphor oil administration.
AB - Cilj naše studije je bilo istraživanje efekta kamforovog esencijalnog ulja na aktivnost kore velikog mozga pacova pomoću fraktalne analize. Vrednosti fraktalne dimenzije parijetalne elektrokortikalne aktivnosti su izračunate pre i posle davanja kamforovog esencijalnog ulja (450-675 μl/kg,i.p.) anesteziranim pacovima. Posle davanja kamforovog ulja, srednje vrednosti fraktalne dimenzije kortikalne aktivnosti suse povećale u proseku. Jedino vrednosti fraktalne dimenzije iktalnih sekvenci elektrokortikograma su bile niže nego one pre davanja kamforovog ulja.

AB - We have decided to detect the seizure brain activity induced by camphor essential oil in rats, as there are still reports of severe intoxication in humans by camphor. The experiments were performed on adult Wistar male rats. The surgery and the acute electrophysiological recordings were done under pentobarbital sodium anesthesia. Local field potentials of cerebral parietal cortex were recorded. The rats were injected by camphor essential oil (150-675 μl/kg b.w., in 1 ml of saline, i.p). We analyzed by Fast Fourier Transform the digitized electrocortical signals before and up 2-3 h after essential oil administration at the sampling rate of 256 Hz. There was a great increase of the mean total power spectra, a relative increase of the power in delta range and decreases of theta and beta ranges when seizural activity with spikes and waves of large amplitude occurred at the level of cerebral cortex 5-30 min after administration of camphor oil at doses >300 μl/kg b.w. It is necessary to investigate further the dose dependent effectiveness of each terpenoid constituent of camphor essential oil on brain activity in order to elucidate the relative safety of the usage of essential oils with these terpenoids.

AB - The aim of our study was to investigate the electrophysiological effects of aluminium neurotoxicity. This animal model of neurodegenerative dementia was induced by chronic treatment of Wistarrats with aluminum chloride for 4 weeks - 2mg Al/kg, i.p, per day. Electrophysiological recordings of left and right somatosensory cortical areas of animals treated by aluminium and the control rats were done under Nembutal anesthesia. Analog to the digital one conversion of the recorded signals was performed at the sampling rate of 256 Hz. Spectral analysis of electrocortical activity during sequences of 120 s (divided in epochs of 8s) was obtained by Fast Fourier Transformation while fractal dimension (FD) of these signals was calculated by Higuchi's algorithm. The relative power spectra of cerebral activity were increased in delta frequency range and decreased in (8.1-32.0 Hz) range in aluminium treated animals compared to the controls. The average fractal dimension of electrocortical activity in aluminium treated animals was lower - 1.290 than the average fractal dimension of electrocortical activity in the control rats - 1.377. Spectral and fractal characteristics of brain activity could bean electrophysiological sign of developing neurodegenerative process similar to the Alzheimer's dementia.

AB - We recorded electrocortical activity in anesthetized rats and constructed kmax new self-similar time series, applying Higuchi's algorithm. The aim of this study was to estimate value of the parameter k(max). in order to obtain fractal dimension values as an optimum measure of biosignal change. After our analysis, electrocortical activity recordings resulted in a family of curves f(k(max)). Three regions could be distinguished 2 <= k(max). < 8, with a U-shape; 8 <= k(max) <= 30, with a steeper quasilinear increase; and k(max) >= 30, with a smaller slope quasilinear increase. We suggest the optimum region for k(max): 8 < k(max) < 18, specifically k(max) = 8.

AB - We propose a new method for calculating fractal dimension (DF) of a signal y(t), based on coefficients m(y)((n)), mean absolute values of its nth order derivatives (consecutive finite differences for sampled signals). We found that logarithms of m(y)((n)), = 2, 3,..., n(max), exhibited linear dependence on n: log (m(y)((n))) = (slope)n + Y(int) with stable slopes and Y-intercepts proportional to signal DF values. Using a family of Weierstrass functions, we established a link between Y-intercepts and signal fractal dimension: DF = A(n(max))Y(int) + B(n(max)), and calculated parameters A(n(max)) and B(n(max)) for n(max) = 3,..., 7. Compared to Higuchi's algorithm, advantages of this method include greater speed and eliminating the need to choose value for k(max), since the smallest error was obtained with n(max) = 3.

AB - 1. Spatio-temporal changes in phosphorylated (pNFP) and nonphosphorylated (npNFP) neurofilament proteins were assessed immunocytochemicaly in adult rat cerebellum, 2 - 30 days following unilateral injection of kainic acid (KA) or physiological saline (SC). 2. Analysis of the staining intensity and pattern demonstrated that injection of both KA and physiological saline elicited significant and long-lasting increase of pNFP and npNFP immunoreactivity, at the ipsilateral, and to lesser extent at the contralateral side of lesion. 3. Kainate intoxication induced abundant expression of pNFP and npNFP in cerebellar white matter, as well as in all layers of perilesioned cortex. Higher pNFP expression was evidenced in the Purkinje cell layer, particularly at cell bodies, initial segments, and proximal dendrites, which normally do not contain pNFP. In addition, synaptophysin immunocytochemistry was used as a marker of synaptogenesis and plasticity. 4. Spatio-temporal pattern of NFP and synaptophysin expression suggests that perilesioned cortex undergoes dynamic changes following brain demage and possess a reparative capacity to abridge the consequences of brain trauma.

AB - Simple, complex action potentials (AP) and interspike recorded background activity (RBA) were detected and extracted from 12 rat cerebellar cortical recordings. For each recording, an averaged simple action potential (SAP) was formed. Fourier amplitude spectra of SAP and RBA were similar in all recordings. For one of the recordings, a series of RBA simulations (SBA) was generated, superimposing random SAPs, varying the superposition frequency (fsup). Average Fourier amplitude, Amp(SBA), was calculated, in order to use Amp(SBA)=f(fsup) as a calibration line for reading fsup of RBA, which is a measure of the population activity. A probability distribution for SAP intensities was derived and a family of calibration lines constructed. As all lines were linear and parallel (slope S) in log-log plots, a population activity change could be calculated as fsup2/fsup1=[Amp2(RBA)/Amp(RBA)]1/S.
AB - Jednostavni, složeni akcioni potencijali (AR) i međuspajkovna osnovna aktivnost (MOA) detektovani su i izdvojeni iz 12 registrovanih signala kore malog mozga pacova.

AB - Although there has been extensive research on the effect of IGF-I on muscles and bone tissue, the effect on brain aging has received little attention. We investigated the IGF-I content in brains of differently aged rats. The IGF-I contents in cerebellar and cerebral cortex were found to be higher in immature rats (4-5 days old) compared to young adult (2.5 months old) and middle-aged (7.5-9 months old) rats. However, the decrease of mean IGF-I in middle-aged rats compared to immature animals was statistically significant only in the cerebellar codex. Our results indicate that IGF-I content decreases through the lifespan and maybe selectively in some brain regions.
