AB - Drosophila melanogaster, kao vrsta sa kosmopolitskom distribucijom i generalista u ishrani,
predstavlja pogodan model sistem za izučavanje mnogih aspekata u oblasti evolucione
biologije, uključujući i komponente adaptivne vrednosti.

AB - Millipedes (class Diplopoda) represent common members of soil fauna in many ecosystems. They are usually cylindrical or flattened, also characterized by two sets of legs per segment. The relationship between locomotion and morphology has been thoroughly investigated in many arthropods. However, in millipedes, previous studies were mostly based on the influence of different environmental factors on their locomotor activity. The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between locomotor activity and morphological variability of body features (body length, body mass), walking legs, and antennae in three European julids, Pachyiulus hungaricus (Karsch, 1881), Megaphyllum unilineatum (C. L. Koch, 1838) and M. bosniense (Verhoeff, 1897). Locomotor activity was videotaped by a web-camera during 15- minute periods and analyzed by ANY-maze software. Antennae and legs were photographed, and their size and shape were estimated using geometric morphometric approach afterwards. Obtained results point out that the evident difference in measured morphological traits among analyzed millipede species significantly determinates their locomotor activity. Moreover, the relationship between locomotor activity and morphological traits is both species-specific and sex-specific.

AB - We employed the technique of geometric morphometrics to study variation of geometric size and shape
of Iris pumila flower parts (standard, fall and style) from plants growing in two natural habitats (exposed and shaded) in a protected natural reserve of the Deliblato Sands. We applied analysis of variance (ANOVA) for centroid size (CS) and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with all shape variables (Procrustes coordinates) as dependent variables, and with habitat as fixed and clone as a random factor. Landmarks and semilandmarks of standards, falls and styles were positioned in MakeFan6 and TpsDig program. The CVA (Canonical discriminant analysis) was used to visualize the differences of shape between the habitats with contrasting ambient light conditions. The heterogeneity of light conditions affected the flower shape. The mean values of centroid size (as a measure of geometric size) of I. pumila standards and falls were lower in open habitat than in shaded environment. The results of ANOVA revealed a statistically significant effect of habitat for standards, fall and style (p = 0.0009, p = 0.0223 and p = 0.0358, respectively,) and between-clone variability in size of all flower parts was also observed (all p < 0.0001). According to the results of MANOVA analysis significant differences in shape between habitats and clones (all p < 0.0001) were observed. Considering that the light intensity is significantly different in open and shaded habitats, we can only assume that this is the key factor that influences the size and shape variation of I. pumila floral parts.

AB - The function of flowers, as the reproductive organs of plants, can be altered by changes in the size and shape of their constituent parts in traffic-related air polluted areas. The aim of this work was to compare the length, width, centroid size and shape (using a set of shape variables - partal warps) of Iris pumila standards (petals) from an urban area of Belgrade city with data from the Deliblato Sands – an unpolluted nature reserve. Differences between the areas, as well as differences in clonal variability, for length, centroid size (ANOVA p < 0.001) and shape variation of standards were significant (MANOVA p < 0.001). Micro-environmental conditions induced significant diversity between flowers within a clone (p < 0.001), while intra-individual variation (part effects, p > 0.05) was not confirmed. Decrease of standard length and centroid size in the polluted environment was detected, as well as a change in the shape of this I. pumila flower part. The standards were shorter and wider in the polluted area when compared to those in the unpolluted environment.

AB - In this work, we investigated the suitability of the threatened species,
Iris pumila L., as a possible bioindicator of traffic pollution in its
natural habitats (mostly protected areas and natural reserves). We
examined its potential to accumulate lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni) in
polluted habitats, and the genetic variability for this capability,
since it is an important facet of bioindicator suitability. We estimated
the concentrations of Pb and Ni in the leaves of 17 I. pumila clones
(genotypes) grown in one of their natural habitats, the unpolluted
semi-arid habitat of the protected Deliblato Sands Special Natural
Reserve, and in the leaves of 18 Iris pumila full-sib families grown in
an experimental plot in a heavily polluted urban location in Belgrade,
Serbia. Comparison of the contrasting habitats by one-way ANOVA analysis
showed that both Pb and Ni concentrations were significantly higher
(six-fold) in the I. pumila leaves collected from plants grown in the
polluted urban habitat. Two-way ANOVA (randomized block design) analysis
performed on the full-sib families grown in the urban location failed to
detect significant genetic variation for metal accumulation in I. pumila
leaves. A significant block effect on the concentration of Ni in leaves
was detected, indicating responsiveness to microenvironmental
variability. These results suggest that I. pumila can serve as a good
indicator of traffic pollution in protected areas. The response is
stable since genetic variability of I. pumila populations does not
appear to influence its role as an indicator greatly.

variability. These results suggest that I. pumila can serve as a good
indicator of traffic pollution in protected areas. The response is
stable since genetic variability of I. pumila populations does not
appear to influence its role as an indicator greatly.",
