AB  - The volatile compounds of fruiting bodies of wild Laetiporus sulphureus (Bull.) Murrill, growing on willow trees from Serbia, were isolated and extracted using methanol, acetone and dichloromethane and investigated by GC/MS-SPME. A total of 56 components were identified in the extracts. Hydrocarbons predominated (76.90%, 77.20%, and 43.10%) in dichloromethane, acetone and methanol extracts, respectively. Fatty acids, esters and sesquiterpenes were present in amounts equal or lower than 2.00%. Ketones were represented with moderate amount with the exception of methanol extract where it reached as much as 28.90% of the total investigated compounds. Extracts were also tested for antimicrobial activity with and without the addition of food additive - potassium disulfite in vitro against eight bacterial and eight fungal species, and in situ in tomato paste against Aspergillus flavus. All the tested extracts showed good antimicrobial activity, but methanol extract with addition of E224 showed the best antimicrobial activity in vitro. In situ results indicate complete inhibition of A. flavus growth in tomato paste after 15 days of the treatment. This study is the first report on volatile composition of L. sulphureus growing wild in Serbia. We describe for the first time the application of its extract as antifungal food preservative. Chemical composition and biological activity of Gaultheria procumbens L. essential oil

AB  - The aim of this study was to examine chemical composition and biological activity of Gaultheria procumbens L essential oil (EO) against food spoilage and oral microorganisms. The components of EO were identified by GC-MS. Antimicrobial activity was determined against food spoilage (five bacteria and six fungal species) and oral microorganisms (eight bacteria and thirty two fungal species) by microdilution and microplate biofilm assay, antioxidant activity was tested using the persistent free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), while antiradical activity was examined by fluorescence spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR). GC-MS analysis showed that methyl salicylate (96.90%) was the main component of the oil. Essential oil inhibited the growth of all microorganisms tested, i.e. food and oral bacteria and fungi, respectively (MIC 0.18-3.00 mg/ml and MBC 1.25-4.00 mg/ml; MIC 0.73-5.00 mg/ml and MFC 2.92-26.67 mg/ml); The oil effectively inhibited the biofilm formation of oral Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans as well (MIC 25.00 MBC 50.00 mg/ml; MIC 12.50, MFC 50.00 mg/ml). In addition, oil exhibited a dose-dependent DPPH-radical-scavenging activity with IC50 value of 30.61 mg/ml. The specific fluorescence probe 2-[6-(4'-amino)phenoxy-3H-xanten-3-on-9-yl] benzoic acid (APP) and the the spin trap 5-(Diethoxyphosphoryl)-5-methyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DEPMPO), capable for simultaneous detection of different free radical specie were used in antiradical activity of the oil measurements. Oil showed a moderate antiradical activity, reducing quantity of produced hydroxyl radicals to about 20% of initial value. This study succeeds in creating directly comparable and quantitative data for the oil unsufficiently examined so far. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - The aim of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial activity of ozone gas and colloidal silver suspension against selected oral microorganisms. Gaseous ozone was used in the ozone study. Suspension of reference and clinically isolated strains of oral microorganisms were exposed to ozone gas for 30, 60 and 120 s. The number of colonies was counted and the killing rate for each microorganism was calculated. In order to determine minimum inhibitory (MICs) and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentrations (MBCs/MFCs) of colloidal silver microdilution method was used. Results showed that after 120 s exposition to gaseous ozone approximately 82.68-99.9% of all strains were eliminated. The colloidal silver exhibited strong antimicrobial activity with MICs and MBCs/MFCs values range from 2.0 to 4.0 mu g/ml. The present study confirmed the efficacy of ozone gas and colloidal silver against selected and isolated oral microorganisms. The results obtained in this study should provide additional evidence for their potential application in reducing the infection caused by microorganisms in the oral cavity.
