AB  - The problem of global amphibian declines has prompted extensive research over the last three decades. Initially, the focus was on identifying and characterizing the extent of the problem, but more recently efforts have shifted to evidence-based research designed to identify best solutions and to improve conservation outcomes. Despite extensive accumulation of knowledge on amphibian declines, there remain knowledge gaps and disconnects between science and action that hamper our ability to advance conservation efforts. Using input from participants at the ninth World Congress of Herpetology, a U.S. Geological Survey Powell Center symposium, amphibian on-line forums for discussion, the International Union for Conservation of Nature Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Gamete Biobanking group, and respondents to a survey, we developed a list of 25 priority research questions for amphibian conservation at this stage of the Anthropocene. We identified amphibian conservation research priorities while accounting for expected tradeoffs in geographic scope, costs, and the taxonomic breadth of research needs. We aimed to solicit views from individuals rather than organizations while acknowledging inequities in participation. Emerging research priorities (i.e., those under-represented in recently published amphibian conservation literature) were identified, and included the effects of climate change, community-level (rather than single species-level) drivers of declines, methodological improvements for research and monitoring, genomics, and effects of land-use change. Improved inclusion of under-represented members of the amphibian conservation community was also identified as a priority. These research needs represent critical knowledge gaps for amphibian conservation although filling these gaps may not be necessary for many conservation actions.

AB  - Examining tortoises’ blood cell parameters in natural populations could be useful for monitoring their health status. The current study examines the blood cell morphology of Eastern Hermann's tortoise in populations inhabiting three distinct locations in Serbia: Čermor, Gonjište, and Kunovica. We analyzed the number and morphometric parameters of different types of peripheral blood cells, including their length, width, and cell and nuclear size, and compared blood cell morphology across populations, sexes, and seasons (spring and summer). Our findings revealed significant variations in erythrocyte and lymphocyte morphometry among Eastern Hermann's tortoises from different populations and sexes, highlighting the influence of these factors on blood cell characteristics. Seasonal differences were observed in lymphocyte and thrombocyte counts, emphasizing the dynamic nature of hematological parameters in these tortoises. Additionally, alterations in erythrocyte cytoplasm were observed, suggesting potential pathological conditions. Establishing reference hematological intervals for healthy wild populations is crucial for monitoring health status, identifying early indicators of stress or disease, and guiding conservation efforts for Eastern Hermann's tortoises. Our results contribute to the general knowledge of the blood cell characteristics of Hermann's tortoise and provide insights into potential population-level differences in their physiology.

AB  - Snakes are ecologically and morphologically plastic organisms that exhibit extensive variations in body size and body condition
in response to environmental factors. Documenting inter-population variations is important to describe species comprehensively
across their distribution range and to monitor trends over time (e.g. decreasing body condition due to alteration of habitat). Thus, we
analyzed the influence of population and sex on body size and body condition in three populations of nose-horned vipers (Vipera
ammodytes) in Serbia. In one population, males were larger than females (F1, 39=4.802, p=0.034), but not in the two other populations
(F1, 36=0.075, p=0.786; F1, 21=0.018, p=0.893). Females exhibited higher body condition (residual values from the regression of
log-body mass against log-body size) than males (F1, 90=10.444, p=0.002); this sex difference was not found in one population when
analyzed separately (F1, 35=1.834, p=0.184). Moreover, we found strong inter-population differences in mean body size and mean
body condition (F2, 96=8.822, p<0.001 and F2, 90=10.319, p=0.001, respectively). While inter-population difference in body size was
driven by males, inter-population difference in body condition was driven by females. These results suggest that, in this species, body
size might be an important determinant of mating success in males, while body condition may play a major role in female fecundity.

(F1, 36=0.075, p=0.786; F1, 21=0.018, p=0.893). Females exhibited higher body condition (residual values from the regression of
log-body mass against log-body size) than males (F1, 90=10.444, p=0.002); this sex difference was not found in one population when
analyzed separately (F1, 35=1.834, p=0.184). Moreover, we found strong inter-population differences in mean body size and mean
body condition (F2, 96=8.822, p<0.001 and F2, 90=10.319, p=0.001, respectively). While inter-population difference in body size was
driven by males, inter-population difference in body condition was driven by females. These results suggest that, in this species, body
size might be an important determinant of mating success in males, while body condition may play a major role in female fecundity.",

Moreover, dating analysis confirmed the diversification of the species during the Pleistocene, as well as the role of the Southern Balkans and Anatolia region as refugia during this period.

AB  - The Meadow and Steppe viper, Vipera ursinii-renardi complex is a well-studied group that is divided into several morphological subspecies. In this study, we combine the analyses of two mitochondrial genes with 9 microsatellite markers to compare both phylogenetic signals. Whereas the signal is similar between both genomes within most subspecies, the relative relationships between subspecies are more differentiated. Moreover, the nuclear phylogenetic reconstruction supports genetic homogeneity within V. u. macrops (in contrast to mtDNA). Both genetic portions show an unexpected differentiation between a population from Bistra Mountain and other V. u. macrops populations. Globally, the microsatellite markers suggest high genetic diversity in most subspecies, even in V. u. rakosiensis which is highly threatened; only V. u. macrops showed a limited genetic diversity. Within lowland subspecies, the differentiation between populations is globally limited compared to the distance between them (except in some populations of V. u. moldavica ). The limited differentiation might be the consequence of a recent isolation (few decades) of previously large populations. Nevertheless, the only way to maintain this genetic diversity and to avoid an increase in genetic differentiation between populations in the future is to recreate suitable habitats and reconnect the populations.

AB  - Insular populations offer excellent opportunities to study the factors that influence phenotypes. We observed island dwarfism in a widespread snake, the nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes). Island vipers were ~20% smaller than mainland individuals. They also produced fewer and smaller offspring. In snakes, food availability has a positive influence on body size, fecundity and offspring size. Consequently, low energy intake is a plausible explanation for insular dwarfism. The diet of island vipers was principally represented by lizards and centipedes, whereas the most profitable prey items (e.g. rodents) were regularly found in the stomach of mainland vipers. Furthermore, the proportion of individuals captured with a full stomach and good body condition were lower on the island compared with the mainland. Thus, island vipers were likely to be experiencing permanent energy restriction, with cascading effects on adult body size and reproductive output. Large prey promotes high relative jaw length in snakes. Island
vipers displayed smaller relative jaw length compared with mainland populations, suggesting that plasticity played a role in insular dwarfism. But the difference in relative tail length between island and mainland populations, a trait not subjected to food-induced plasticity, indicates local adaptation. Both plasticity and adaptation might influence the phenotype of island vipers.

As evaporation increases with temperature, the EWL could constrain the activity of ectotherms when water is not available. The thermal preference of a species and its resistance to water loss can remain similar under different environmental conditions and over time, or they can change depending on a variety of factors. One of the most important factors regarding temperate climate is its seasonality, and ectotherms living in such climate may be adapted to the seasonal fluctuations in the environment and show different physiological responses depending on the season. During spring (May) and autumn (September) we observed two ecophysiological traits of the Balkan wall lizard (Podarcis tauricus): preferred body temperature (Tpref) with set-point range (Tset), and EWL rates (instantaneous evaporative water loss – EWLi and accumulated evaporative water loss – EWLa). In these experiments we analyzed only adult males. Our findings showed that the thermal preference of P. tauricus was conserved between the seasons, as Tpref and Tset were quite similar in May and September (Tpref May: 21.5°C-36.1°C and Tpref September: 21.0°C-35.9°C; Tset May: 28.6°C-32.5°C and Tset September: 28.7°C-32.6°C). Overall hourly rates of evaporative water loss were lower in September and EWLi was also with fewer oscillations in the autumn. Mann-Whitney U test showed a significant difference in the total EWLa (p < 0.05). The analyzed lizards lost, on average, 2% and 1.2% of body weight in May and September, respectively. These results indicate that there might be a seasonal change in the sensitivity to water loss that enables the species to lose less water during the drier season.

AB  - In this paper, the updated checklist of Serbian amphibians and reptiles is
presented. The updated checklist of Serbian amphibians and reptiles was compiled
from the literature on distribution, taxonomy and phylogeny. The checklist
contains 48 autochthonous and two introduced species. Five species underwent
taxonomic revisions (Triturus ivanbureschi, T. macedonicus, Pelobates balcanicus,
Bufotes viridis and Mediodactylus kotschyi). Two species were added after recent
taxonomic splits of species’ complexes (Hyla orientalis and Anguis colchica).
Presence of new (Lacerta trilineata) and introduced species (Hemidactylus turcicus)
was confirmed during recent fieldwork. There are at least eight more species
that can potentially be present in Serbia. The national protection legislative should
be updated according to the current checklist.
AB  - У овом раду приказујемо ажурирану листу фауне водоземаца и
гмизаваца у Србији. Листа је састављена на основу литературе о
дистрибуцији, таксономији и филогенији водоземаца и гмизаваца који
припадају нашој фауни. Садржи 48 врста аутохтоних за Републику
Србију као и две интродуковане врсте за које је потврђено да се на
територији Србије размножавају и успостављају популације. Пет
врста на овој листи су недавно прошле кроз таксономску ревизију

viridis и Mediodactylus kotschyi), а две врсте су придодате након
скорашњег таксономског раздвајања комплекса врста (Hyla orientalis и
Anguis colchica). Најновија теренска истраживања су потврдила при-
суство једне нове (Lacerta trilineata) и једне интродуковане врсте
(Hemidactylus turcicus). Потенцијално је на територији Репубике Срби-
је присутно још најмање осам врста водоземаца и гмизаваца, пре свега
у пограничним областима. Од 48 врста аутохтоних за Републику
Србију, седам су рањиве/готово угрожене на међународном нивоу,
према критеријумима IUCN, три су у прилозима CITES-а, 39 се налазе
на анексима Директиве о стаништима (Habitat Directive), а све су на
прилозима Бернске конвенције. У току је процена конзервационог
статуса свих врста на националном нивоу, на основу чега ће бити
предложена нова легислатива.
Са 48 врста, Србија се може сматрати за богату биолошком
разноврсношћу водоземаца и гмизаваца па чак и центром диверзитета
појединих таксона – пре свега великих мрмољака и других комплекса

AB  - We present the updated distribution data of the Hyla arborea species complex
in Serbia. Hyla arborea inhabits all biogeographic regions, while Hyla orientalis
inhabits only the easternmost parts of north-eastern, eastern and south-eastern
Serbia. Potential hybrid zone encompasses parts of central and southern Serbia
from the Đerdap gorge, over Niš to Bosilegrad. Since the taxonomic separation between the tree frog taxa was not yet recognized in national nomenclature, we
propose the official Serbian names. The species H. arborea will keep the standard
Serbian name “Gatalinka”, while for the species H. orientalis we propose the name
“Istočna gatalinka”.
AB  - У овом раду, приказујемо ажуриране податке о дистрибуцији
комплекса врста Hyla arborea у Србији. Подаци се састоје од налаза
објављених у литератури или на Интернету, заједно са претходно
необјављеним теренским подацима. Од ове две врсте, највећи део
територије Србије, укључујући све биогеографске регионе, насељава
H. arborea. Hyla orientalis, са друге стране, насељава само крајње
источне делове североисточне, источне и југоисточне Србије, са
потенцијалном хибридном зоном која такође обухвата делове централ-
не и јужне Србије. Дистрибуција H. arborea је густа у панонским
деловима Србије, конкретно у плавним зонама река Дунав, Сава и
Тиса, док је дистрибуција више раштркана у перипанонским и
планинско-котлинским деловима Србије. Hyla orientalis насељава
искључиво најисточније делове планинско-котлинског региона, где је
повезана са воденим системима који припадају Балканском планин-
ском венцу, док Карпатски и Родопски масиви представљају северо-
источну и југоисточну границу дистрибуције, респективно. За хибрид-
ну зону се претпоставља да обухвата оквирно 30 км широк коридор
који се протеже од Ђердапске клисуре, преко Ниша до Босилеграда,
али додатно узорковање ће морати да се изврши како би се ово
потврдило.
Пошто таксономско раздвајање између криптичних врста гаталин-
ки још увек није препознато у нашој националној номенклатури, овај
рад предлаже званичне српске називе за ове врсте. Номинална врста
H. arborea ће задржати стандардни српски назив „гаталинка“, док за
врсту H. orientalis предлажемо име „источна гаталинка“.

AB  - Amphibians are the most endangered of all vertebrates; therefore, maintaining a
long-term monitoring of local populations is important even for the widespread
species. Neglecting the research on common species might result in many silent local
extinctions. The negative effects of environmental changes can be reflected in a
reduction of a population’s size, with a strongest impact on species that reproduce
during early spring (like Bufo bufo – common toad and Rana dalmatina – agile frog),
although other species (Pelophylax esculentus complex – green frogs) could also be
affected. Decrease in size of common toad populations was recorded in parts of Great
Britain, the Czech Republic, Italy and Switzerland, while agile frog populations have
usually been reported as stable. Declines in population size of some green frog
populations were reported in parts of Poland and Turkey.
These three taxa were monitored from 2011 to 2021 in a permanent pond near
village Zuce, at the southern outskirts of Belgrade (Serbia). Population size of the
common toad seems to be declining over the years (Kendall’s Tau = -0.60; Z = -2.57; p
= 0.01). Number of females was constantly low, which raises concern. Fluctuation in
population size was registered for both agile frogs and green frogs, with 2021 being
the best year as most egg clutches and individuals were spotted. Density dependence
effect on population size was confirmed for the agile frog (Kendall’s Tau = -0.56; Z = -
2.09; p = 0.04). Within a year, the activity of green frogs was increasing over the months
until May/June and then it was decreasing until December. The largest number of
individuals was spotted in May. There was a slight inversion in that decline in
September, when maximum and minimum numbers of individuals were higher than in
August. There were no correlations among the species regarding population size
fluctuations.

17 years period, at different moments: A (2005: n=47), and B (2013-2014: n=74) for

males. The snout-vent length of the females did not change over time (Mann Whitney
U: Z=-0.89; p>0.05), but their body mass was higher in moment B (Mann Whitney U:
Z=-4.7; p<0.05). The snout-vent length of the males increased over the study period
(Kruskal-Wallis: Chi-sq=26.82; p<0.05), but their body mass remained similar
(Kruskal-Wallis: Chi-sq=26.82; p>0.05). We observed a sexual dimorphism, females
being larger than males (SD =1.31, Mann Whitney U: Z=-16.08; p<0.05). The median
age increased over time in both females (moment A - 4 years old; moment B - 5 years
old; Mann Whitney U; Z=-6.97; p<0.05), and males (moment A - 4 years old, B - 5 years
old, C - 5 years old, Kruskal-Wallis: Chi-sq=40.68; p<0.05). Age of sexual maturity (i.e.,
minimum age observed) remained similar over the study period in both females (3
years old) and males (2 years old). Longevity (i.e., maximum age observed) increased
over the study period, from 6 to 7 years old in females, and from 6 to 9 years old in
males. We revealed positive changes in both body size and age of the studied
population over a 17-years period of monitoring. Thus, our study provides a baseline
that will help monitor and quantify the impact of habitat changes that were only
recently observed in the area (i.e., deforestation, since 2019).

AB  - The common frog (Rana temporaria Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most
widespread and abundant amphibians in Europe, except in the southern parts of the
continent, where distribution is apparently fragmented. It has the greatest genetic
variability of all western Palearctic brown frogs and it is extremely variable in
morphology and ecological preferences, also. The Republic of Serbia is a country of
particular interest in terms of amphibian conservation because of the genetically and
morphologically diverse populations of several amphibian species.
We analysed nucleotide variability of mitochondrial DNA sequences of partial
MT-CYTB gene (461 bp) of 27 specimens of R. temporaria species. Samples (eggs and
tail tips of adult individuals) were collected in two periods, 1986-2007 and 2013-2017,
in 14 localities in Serbia. The analyses revealed nine different haplotypes separated
into two main clusters: north-eastern and eastern (localities Bela Crkva, Grza, Bigar,
Đerdap, Stara planina) and central, west, south-western, and south-eastern Serbia
(localities Jagodnja, Lučani, Zlatibor, Goč, Kopaonik, Prokletije, Šar planina, Oštrozub,
and Vlasina). Lučani and Grza populations had two different haplotypes each.
Our results confirmed previous findings that the common frog shows
phylogeographic substructuring. The existence of two genetically diverged population
groups on the territory of Serbia suggests that these populations should be adequately
protected in terms of the conservation of their breeding places and suitable terrestrial
habitats. In Serbia, R. temporaria habitats are currently not only fragmented but also
under intensive anthropogenic pressure, due to intensive urbanization, particularly in
the mountain areas and the promotion of non-sustainable tourism, which makes them
highly vulnerable. Therefore, there is a need for more precise data about species’
phylogeny and distribution, both at the national and regional level, to define
conservation priorities in the near future

У овом истраживању анализирани су узорци ткива (јаја, врх репа пуноглавца, врх прста адулта) од укупно 28 јединки травњаче са 14 локалитета на територији Србије сакупљених у периоду 1986-2007. и 2013-17. Парцијалне секвенце 16S rRNK гена митохондријалне ДНК (395 бп) показале су постојање шест хаплотипова, сврстаних у две групе које су и географски јасно раздвојене. Првој припадају јединке са локалитета Бела Црква, Бигар, Грза, Ђердап и Стара планина, а другој оне са подручја централне, западне, југозападне и југоисточне Србије (Лучани, Копаоник, Гоч, Јагодња, Проклетије, Златибор, Власина, Оштрозуб, Шар планина). На локалитету Лучани присутна су два различита хаплотипа.
Анализа гена 16S rRNK се показала као адекватна метода за испитивање генетичке и филогеографске структурираности врсте R. temporaria која се налази под интензивним антропогеним притиском. Због угрожавања генофонда, пре свега губитком повољних станшта и променом климе, постоји опасност драстичног смањења дистрибуције ове врсте у Србији, те је неопходно донешење мера у циљу њене заштите и конзервације.

Međutim, zbog fragmentisanog areala i narušenih staništa smatra se retkom vrstom. Prema nacionalnoj Crvenoj Knjizi vodozemaca, a na osnovu IUCN kategorizacije, ima status skoro ugrožene vrste (NT – „Near Threatened“), a prema Pravilniku o proglašenju i zaštiti strogo zaštićenih i zaštićenih divljih biljaka, životinja i gljiva na teritoriji Srbije je strogo zaštićena vrsta. U ovom istraživanju analizirani su uzorci tkiva (jaja, vrh repa punoglavca, vrh prsta adulta) od ukupno 28 jedinki travnjače sa 14 lokaliteta na teritoriji Srbije sakupljenih u periodu 1986-2007. i 2013-17. AB  - In these times of aggressive and enormous anthropogenic alterations of freshwater aquatic habitats throughout the Western Balkans, including drying out, pollution or the introduction of invasive species, the value of small water bodies (SWB) as refugia for local amphibians is clearly increasing. A network of SWB could be crucial for the conservation of local amphibian richness, if this network is properly maintained and monitored. Together, countries of the Western Balkan harbor 29 amphibian species and only one of these species does not use SWB. Almost all those countries share the same challenges—drainage, technical flood protection measures, channelization, planned small dam construction, agriculture, deforestation, pollution, road construction and decrease of aquifers. The conservation of SWB in the region is related to the socio-economic status of the people i.e. to the stimulation of local stakeholders to continue with the traditional practices of agriculture and animal husbandry, including maintenance of SWB, and to their continuous education on importance of SWB for preservation of high values of local biodiversity.

AB  - Hydropower plants (HPPs) have a strong environmental impact on freshwater wetlands. Small diversion HPPs (SDHPPs) with 0.1–10 MW of installed power, redirect water from small mountainous rivers into several-kilometer-long tubes, disrupting complex dynamics of local aquatic food webs and their interactions with neighbor terrestrial food webs. It certainly affects local aquatic communities, but it is often neglected that two highly threatened vertebrate groups—amphibians and reptiles—which live in and around these wetlands, could be affected as well. In the Balkan peninsula, a part of Southeastern Europe, SDHPPs recently became very attractive and profitable for potential investors after they were proclaimed as eligible for subsidies from the national budget. As a result, in year 2020, the maximal projected number of SHPPs in the Balkans increased to 4,556. According to the literature data, ~28% of amphibian species in the Balkan Peninsula use small rivers and streams in the upper parts of watersheds as feeding, breeding and/or nursery habitats. Additionally, 38% of the total number of reptile species in Europe are registered in the hilly/mountainous areas of the peninsula, and 33% of these species strictly need humid habitats. The attempt of this mini-review is to present the facts which show that SHPPs and DSHPPs, in the way they are currently being installed, present harmful energy solution for the biodiversity of the mountain parts of Balkan peninsula, particularly for local amphibian and reptile populations which rely on lotic aquatic ecosystems and/or humid terrestrial habitats.

Small diversion HPPs (SDHPPs) with 0.1–10 MW of installed power, redirect water from small mountainous rivers into several-kilometer-long tubes, disrupting complex dynamics of local aquatic food webs and their interactions with neighbor terrestrial food webs. It certainly affects local aquatic communities, but it is often neglected that two highly threatened vertebrate groups—amphibians and reptiles—which live in and around these wetlands, could be affected as well. In the Balkan peninsula, a part of Southeastern Europe, SDHPPs recently became very attractive and profitable for potential investors after they were proclaimed as eligible for subsidies from the national budget. As a result, in year 2020, the maximal projected number of SHPPs in the Balkans increased to 4,556. According to the literature data, ~28% of amphibian species in the Balkan Peninsula use small rivers and streams in the upper parts of watersheds as feeding, breeding and/or nursery habitats. Additionally, 38% of the total number of reptile species in Europe are registered in the hilly/mountainous areas of the peninsula, and 33% of these species strictly need humid habitats. The attempt of this mini-review is to present the facts which show that SHPPs and DSHPPs, in the way they are currently being installed, present harmful energy solution for the biodiversity of the mountain parts of Balkan peninsula, particularly for local amphibian and reptile populations which rely on lotic aquatic ecosystems and/or humid terrestrial habitats.",

AB  - The slow-worm lizards ( Anguis ) comprise five species occurring throughout most of the Western Palearctic. Although these species are relatively uniform morphologically – with the exception of A. cephallonica , which exhibits a quite unique morphology – they are genetically deeply divergent. Here, we provide detailed distribution maps for each species and discuss their biogeography and conservation based on updated genetic data and a robust distribution database. We pay particular attention to the so called ‘grey zone’, which typically represents secondary contact zones and in some cases confirmed or presumed hybrid zones. Four of the five species live in parapatry, while only two species, A. cephallonica and A. graeca from the southern Balkans occur in partial sympatry. Further research should focus on the eco-evolutionary interactions between species in contact, including their hybridization rates, to reveal deeper details of the slow-worm evolutionary and natural history.

AB  - In this study, we present an updated distribution data of Anguis fragilis
complex species in Serbia. The dataset consists of literature and Internet records,
coupled with previously unpublished distribution data gathered in the field. Of the two species of the complex, Anguis fragilis is present in the western and southern
parts of the country while Anguis colchica is present in the northeastern and
eastern parts of the country. There is an absence of both species in the
northernmost parts of the country, due to the lack of adequate habitat. The field
records tend to be more abundant in the Mountain-valley altitudinal region, and
scarcer and more scattered in the Peripannonian and Pannonian altitudinal regions,
which can partly be attributed to the sampling bias. The location and width of the
contact zone are still poorly known. It’s hypothesized to follow the Velika Morava
river valley to the south and then the boundary between the Carpathian-Balkan and
Rhodope mountain ranges in the southeast, but the hybrid zone could be situated
more to the west. There is a certain discrepancy, in the literature, between the
contact zone proposed by morphological data, and the one proposed by molecular
sampling. That stresses the need for thorough sampling in the region and further
analyses. Finally, since the taxonomic split between the cryptic slow worm taxa
was not yet recognized in our national nomenclature, this paper also presents the
official Serbian names for the two species. The species Anguis fragilis will keep
the standard Serbian name “Slepić”, while for the species Anguis colchica we
propose the name “Istočni slepić”.
AB  - У овом раду, приказујемо ажуриране податке о дистрибуцији
комплекса врста слепића (Anguis fragilis complex) у Србији. Подаци се
састоје из налаза објављених у литератури или на Интернету, заједно
са претходно необјављеним дистрибуционим подацима сакупљеним
на терену. Од две врсте комплекса присутне у Србији, Anguis fragilis је распрострањен у западним и јужним крајевима наше земље док је
Anguis colchica присутан у североисточним и источним крајевима. У
најсевернијим деловима наше земље констатовано је одсуство обе
врсте, због недостатка одговарајућег станишта. Налази су бројнији у
планинско-котлинском региону и ређи и раштрканији у перипанон-
ском и панонском региону, што се делимично може објаснити
несистематским узорковањем. Локација и ширина контактне зоне две
врсте слепића у Србији је још увек недовољно позната. Претпоставља
се да се пружа дуж долине Велике Мораве ка југу а затим прати
границу између Родопског и Карпатско-Балканског планинског маси-
ва ка југо-истоку, али постоје индиције да се хибридна зона налази и
западније. Постоји извесно неслагање, у литератури, између контактне
зоне предложене на основу морфолошких анализа и оне предложене
на основу молекуларних анализа. Ово указује на потребу за опсежни-
јим узорковањем и даљим анализама. Коначно, пошто раздвајање две
криптичке врсте слепића до сада није препознато у нашој номенкла-
тури, у овом раду предлажемо званичне српске називе за наведене
врсте. Врста Anguis fragilis ће задржати стандардно српско име
„Слепић“, док за врсту Anguis colchica предлажемо име „Источни
слепић“.

AB  - Two previously known northernmost localities of Sharp-snouted rock lizard in Montenegro were the entrance of the Komarnica Canyon (Nevidio), and the middle part of the Tara River Canyon (village Tepca). It was presumed that Komarnica and Piva canyons were once corridors for the spreading of this species from the Eastern Adriatic sub-Mediterranean area to the Tara River Canyon in the north. However, it had not been hitherto known if there were any other relict populations in the area. In the autumn of 2019 a localized population of D. oxycephala was discovered in the middle part of the Komarnica Canyon.

AB  - Macro- and microhabitat preference of Testudo hermanni boettgeri , the eastern subspecies of Hermann’s tortoise, was investigated utilizing modified methodology for the western subspecies which emphasized the importance of habitat heterogeneity preservation. The study objective was to explore the habitat preferences of the eastern subspecies of T. hermanni . Research was conducted within the same year at four localities in Eastern and Southeastern Serbia. Macrohabitat determination was conducted using a 0 to 5 land cover score system (coverage with herbaceous, bushy or tree vegetation) for 4 m 2 tortoise encounter surroundings. Microhabitat analysis was carried out by determining the plant species in closest contact with the tortoise in the moment of recording. Plants were classified into six groups: 1) aromatic, 2) bramble, 3) herbaceous, 4) thorny shrub, 5) tree and 6) non-thorny shrubs. test was used for comparison between expected and empirical habitat preference. Results confirmed that the most attractive macrohabitats for Eastern Hermann’s tortoises in this part of the Balkans are meadows and open shrublands, with the addition of dense forest (important in wormer months), what is concordant with earlier data from the Mediterranean part of former Yugoslavia. The most attractive microhabitats were “herbaceous plants”, followed by “bramble”.

abstract = "Macro- and microhabitat preference of Testudo hermanni boettgeri , the eastern subspecies of Hermann’s tortoise, was investigated utilizing modified methodology for the western subspecies which emphasized the importance of habitat heterogeneity preservation. The study objective was to explore the habitat preferences of the eastern subspecies of T. hermanni . Research was conducted within the same year at four localities in Eastern and Southeastern Serbia. Macrohabitat determination was conducted using a 0 to 5 land cover score system (coverage with herbaceous, bushy or tree vegetation) for 4 m 2 tortoise encounter surroundings. Microhabitat analysis was carried out by determining the plant species in closest contact with the tortoise in the moment of recording. Plants were classified into six groups: 1) aromatic, 2) bramble, 3) herbaceous, 4) thorny shrub, 5) tree and 6) non-thorny shrubs. test was used for comparison between expected and empirical habitat preference. Results confirmed that the most attractive macrohabitats for Eastern Hermann’s tortoises in this part of the Balkans are meadows and open shrublands, with the addition of dense forest (important in wormer months), what is concordant with earlier data from the Mediterranean part of former Yugoslavia. The most attractive microhabitats were “herbaceous plants”, followed by “bramble”.",

AB  - The nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) is the least studied species of European true vipers, regarding its population ecology and reproductive biology. We rаn capture-recapture (CR) studies on this species during 12 years (2007-2018) on Golem Grad Island (Prespa Lake, North Macedonia). We captured 501 vipers (304 adults, 161 subadults, 36 newborns) and recaptured 240 individuals enabling us to estimate demographic traits. Females larger than 35.0 cm of snout-vent-length [SVL] (the smallest undoubtedly gravid female) and males larger than 37.0 cm SVL (the smallest male observed while mating) were considered adults. The largest captured individual was 66 cm long, indicating insular dwarfism. Fecundity data were gathered in the field (palpation) and from females collected for controlled parturition in order to obtain size at birth and define newborn size (up to 18.0 cm SVL). Intermediate sized snakes were considered subadults. Modelling of subadult and adult CR data implied sexand age-specific capture probabilities (females and subadults being on the lower end); mean annual survival probabilities were in favour of the females (78% vs. 71%). Total population size was estimated at 2345 (s=293.9) individuals, indicating the highest reported density for this species (130 ind/ha, s=16.4). Adult sex-ratio was 1,4 (male/female) and the proportion of reproductive females ranged from 44% to 74%, suggesting a biennial cycle. Litter size varied from two to nine (average 4.5); this is particularly low for this species. Diet changed with ontogeny – juveniles fed mainly on Scolopendra cingulata and lizards, while adults mainly preyed on lizards and dice snakes.

AB  - Climatic conditions changing over time and space shape the evolution of organisms at multiple levels, including temperate lizards in the family Lacertidae. Here we reconstruct a dated phylogenetic tree of 262 lacertid species based on a supermatrix relying on novel phylogenomic datasets and fossil calibrations. Diversification of lacertids was accompanied by an increasing disparity among occupied bioclimatic niches, especially in the last 10 Ma, during a period of progressive global cooling. Temperate species also underwent a genome-wide slowdown in molecular substitution rates compared to tropical and desert-adapted lacertids. Evaporative water loss and preferred temperature are correlated with bioclimatic parameters, indicating physiological adaptations to climate. Tropical, but also some populations of cool-adapted species experience maximum temperatures close to their preferred temperatures. We hypothesize these species-specific physiological preferences may constitute a handicap to prevail under rapid global warming, and contribute to explaining local lizard extinctions in cool and humid climates.
