The aim of this study was to explore the way for determination of environmental condition of running waters using macroinvertebrates. Water quality has been evaluated by using specific biological trait - saprobic group (SG) ratio. The macrozoobenthos of the Vlasina river and its two tributaries, the Gradska and Luznica rivers (south-east Serbia, Yugoslavia) was studied during 1996. A total of 125 taxa were identified. The 85 taxa were included in SG analysis and organized by saprobic values in four groups corresponding to saprobic zones. SG observation demonstrates good water quality and mild deterioration of water quality along the Vlasina river that was in co-ordination with results of physical and chemical analyses. It was underlined that SG analysis was a useful and easy to interpretative biomonitoring tool which can combined with the other community attributes to provide a full account of the understanding of the match between habitat and aquatic fauna.
