This paper points out the advantages of using the Water Pollution Index (WPI) in water quality assessment of surface waters, which can include a large number of different parameters (physical, chemical, microbiological and biological). It is often difficult to interpret the results when numerous quality elements are analyzed, because each of them can individually indicate a different quality class, and the assessment is usually given according to the least favorable result. The WPI overcomes this problem by providing a single assessment score that can be effectively used as a unit of measure for environmental assessment in accordance with the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). More frequent use of this index could provide an assessment system specific to the watercourse type and stressor.sr
