Considering that dexamethasone (Dx) influences fetal development, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of changed concentrations of glucocorticoids in the plasma of pregnant rats on the structure and synthetic activity of ACTH-cells of their male fetuses and offspring. Pregnant rats were treated with five consecutive Dx doses (0.3 mg/kg/bw/day), while the control group received an equal volume of saline, starting from day 16 of gestation. The results obtained indicate that chronic Dx-treatment of pregnant rats suppresses differentiation of ACTH-cells, as well as ACTH and cortisol plasma concentrations in fetuses and offspring in comparison with the controls. Mitotic index of the anterior pituitary cells was markedly reduced in fetuses and offspring from Dx-treated dams as compared to the controls. .
