Western Barbastelle is a forest species, hunting inside
forests or at forest edges. Summer roosts are under tree bark and
in tree crevices, artificial bat houses and buildings. Bats often
move between roosts. Maternity colonies are small, with 10-20
individuals in tree roosts and up to 100 in buildings. Hibernation
roosts are mostly underground. Those in caves include up to 50
bats while colonies in bunkers in Slovakia and Poland include
several thousand individuals. This species is sedentary, travelling
less than 40 km between summer and winter roosts. Since 2000
there were 40 ringed bats and two loco records from Drenajićka
Pećina cave in Western Serbia (2 and 3 years after ringing).
