The use of coal for electric power generation in Serbia results in large quantities of fly ash and other residues. Fly ash disposal has adverse impacts on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems due to leaching of toxic substances including trace metals from the ash into soil and groundwater followed by reduction in plant establishment and growth. Although fly ash deposits do not serve as biologically productive habitat they are often surrounded by agricultural fields, where different agricultural crops are produced, and which are permanently covered with fly ash, thus causing a number of adverse consequences to the safety of produced crops. Therefore, stabilization of ash would provide safer production of food in these areas. In this respect, the main objective of this study was to measure total concentrations of Al, Fe, As, B, Cr and Ni in arable soil (garden soil and plowed soil) located in the vicinity of open pit mine and fly ash disposal sites of thermoeletric power plants „Kolubara“ in Lazarevac and „Nikola Tesla A“ in Obrenovac. Results of two years study (2013-2014) showed elevated concentrations of examined trace elements in most of the soil samples, with B and Ni concentrations above the maximum backround concentrations for agricultural soils. In the second year excessive floods caused by Kolubara and Sava rivers in the examined areas contributed to the elevated concentrations of Fe, As Cr and Ni in the arable soil. Results obtained in this study showed higher pollution level for soil in the „Kolubara“ area which implies the nessessity of the monitoring of the trace elements levels as well as further detailed analysis of physico-chemical characteristics of these soils.
