AB  - Peri-implant diseases are an emerging public health problem, and it's considered that limitations of standard diagnostics play the role herein. The study objective was the estimation of pathological bone resorption at clinical and biological level in patients with peri-implant mucositis (PIM) and peri-implantitis (PI) before and 6 months after standard treatment and to compare them with healthy controls (HC). The split-mouth interventional study included 60 patients affected with PIM or PI. Patients that also presented at least one more HC were enrolled in the study and underwent standard non-surgical and surgical treatment, respectively. Standard clinical parameters and soluble levels of RANKL were measured in peri-implant crevicular fluid baseline and 6 months following treatment. Clinical parameters and RANKL significantly decreased following treatment in PIM and PI. However, bleeding on probing and probing depth remained significantly increased when compared to HC. RANKL answered requests for biomarker of peri-implant diseases, its baseline levels were significantly increased in PIM and PI, they decreased following treatment and reached HC in peri-implantitis, while in PIM RANKL remained significantly increased. Presence of pathological bone resorption in patients lacked its clinical signs, and respective persistence following treatment suggest the need for biomarker-supported diagnosis for timely diagnosis of peri-implantitis and appropriate orientation of respective management strategies.

AB  - Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) surveillance of COVID-19 and other future outbreaks is a challenge for developing countries as most households are not connected to a sewerage system. In December 2019, SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in the Danube River at a site severely affected by wastewaters from Belgrade. Rivers are much more complex systems than wastewater systems, and efforts are needed to address all the factors influencing the adoption of WBE as an alternative to targeting raw wastewater. Our objective was to provide a more detailed insight into the potential of SARS-CoV-2 surveillance in Serbian surface waters for epidemiological purposes. Water samples were collected at 12 sites along the Sava and Danube rivers in Belgrade during the fourth COVID-19 wave in Serbia that started in late February 2021. RNA was concentrated using Amicon Ultra-15 centrifugal filters and quantified using RT-qPCR with primer sets targeting nucleocapsid (N1 and N2) and envelope (E) protein genes. Microbiological (faecal indicator bacteria and human and animal genetic faecal source tracking markers), epidemiological, physicochemical and hydromorphological parameters were analysed in parallel. From 44 samples, SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in 31, but only at 4 concentrations above the level of quantification (ranging from 8.47 × 103 to 2.07 × 104 gc/L). The results indicated that surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in surface waters as ultimate recipients could be used as an epidemiological early-warning tool in countries lacking wastewater treatment and proper sewerage infrastructure. The performance of the applied approach, including advanced sampling site characterization to trace and identify sites with significant raw sewage influence from human populations, could be further improved by adaptation of the methodology for processing higher volumes of samples and enrichment factors, which should provide the quantitative instead of qualitative data needed for WBE.

AB  - Velika, Zapadna, Južna Morava, kao i Sava, Kolubara i Barička reka su pod značajnim uticajem komunalnih i industrijskih otpadnih voda. Ciljevi studije su procena genotoksičnog potencijala analiziranih lokaliteta i ispitivanje osetljivosti primenjenih biotestova i pristupa istraživanja. Studija slučaja Velika Morava obuhvatila je veliko ispitivano područje na osam lokaliteta na Velikoj, Zapadnoj i Južnoj Moravi, a u studiji Sava ispitivano je tri prostorno bliska lokaliteta koji su pod različitim pritiscima zagađenja. U in silico pristupu na osnovu literaturnih podataka analiziran je toksični/genotoksični potencijal jedinjenja detektovanih u vodi. Ex situ/in vitro pristup obuhvatio je ispitivanje genotoksičnog potencijala pomoću SOS/umuC testa, kao i primenom alkalnog komet testa na HepG2 ćelijskoj liniji. U in situ/in vivo istraživanju analizirano je DNK oštećenje ćelija krvi vrste Alburnus alburnus (uklija) pomoću alkalnog, Fpg-modifikovanog komet testa i mikronukleus testa. Rezultati su pokazali različitu osetljivost zavisno od upotrebljenih testova i pristupa, ali i različit odgovor kod uklija u zavisnosti od tipa zagađenja na lokalitetima. In silico i ex situ/in vitro pristupi su pokazali niži stepen osetljivosti u odnosu na in situ/in vivo testove, a alkalni komet test je pokazao najveći potencijal u diskriminaciji lokaliteta. Utvrđeno je da uklija može biti pouzdan bioindikator u ekogenotoksikološkim istraživanjima velikih ravničarskih reka.

AB  - The literature data on the microbiological water quality of the surface and groundwaters in Montenegro is very scarce. Therefore, this chapter aims to provide an insight in the microbiological water quality of rivers in Montenegro by compiling the data obtained in period 2009–2018 in national monitoring program and the data collected within the Montenegro survey in 2019 with an emphasis on the hotspots of faecal pollution and possible sources of pollution. Despite the high risk that poor implementation of wastewater treatment might represent for Montenegro, the obtained dataset indicates that overall microbiological water quality of rivers in Montenegro is quite good. About 80% of the investigated sites have bathing water quality according to Montenegrin legislation. Only four sites were identified as hotspots of faecal pollution where the human source of pollution prevails.

AB  - Montenegrin surface water and groundwater are important for the Balkan Peninsula since they are connected by the transboundary Dinaric Karst Aquifer System with the waters of additional five countries. The pollution from the surface water can rapidly infiltrate in aquifer and endanger this sensible ecosystem and the health of humans through drinking water supply. This chapter gives insights in the pressures of pollution on Montenegrin waters and in a limited literature data regarding freshwater ecotoxicological studies in Montenegro. Also, this chapter provides new ecotoxicological data obtained during survey in 2019, with a focus on the sites which are identified as hotspots of fecal pollution. The highest responses of biomarkers which indicate embryotoxic, genotoxic, and phytotoxic effects in zebrafish embryo test and in roots of Allium cepa were obtained at Ćehotina – downstream of Pljevlja. Similar results were detected at the site downstream Mojkovac at Tara, yet this site is affected by different type of pollution. Genotoxic endpoints in zebrafish stressed out sites on Morača and Lim rivers which are under pressures of fecal pollution. The data in this chapter provides an insight into current status obtained by the ex situ bioassays and indicates need for more comprehensive in situ assessment.

AB  - The aims of this study were to: (i) examine the toxic effects of sodium fluoride (NaF) in blood, liver, spleen, and brain cells of Wistar rats after the subacute exposure; (ii) explore the potential protective properties of selenium (Se) against fluoride toxicity after the simultaneous administration. Twenty male Wistar rats, eight weeks old, weighing approximately 140–190 g, were divided into four experimental groups (n = 5) as follows: I control-tap water; II NaF 150 ppm; III NaF 150 ppm and Se 1.5 mg/L; IV Se 1.5 mg/L, and had available water with solutions ad libitum for 28 days. DNA damage detected by comet assay was confirmed in the liver, spleen, and brain cells, but not in blood. Selenium supplementation together with NaF decreased DNA damage in liver and spleen cells. According to the histological findings, no changes were observed in spleen and brain tissues after NaF administration. Unlike the observed Se protective effect on the DNA level, no significant reduction of liver tissue injury was observed after the NaF and Se treatment, resulting in mild inflammation. Data of this study suggest that DNA damage after NaF subacute exposure at moderately high concentration was reduced in liver and spleen cells due to Se supplementation, but a similar change was not seen in the brain.

AB  - This study deals with bleak (Alburnus alburnus) sensitivity in detecting of the wastewater related pressure in large lowland rivers. The major objective was to investigate if the response measured in bleak should be linked to a certain stretch of the river and characterised as "stretch specific", or it should be linked to the sampling site and characterised as "site specific". The response was evaluated via condition index, metal pollution index, DNA damage and cell viability using integrated biomarker response approach. The study was conducted at 3 sub-sites characterized by different pollution levels in a relatively short stretch (2 km) of the Sava River (Serbia). Results indicated that the response of the biomarkers in bleak can be interpreted as "site specific". Among the studied biomarkers, DNA damage assessed by comet assay and micronucleus test has shown high sensitivity in differentiation of the sites.
