Morphological variability among populations of Austropotamobius torrentium (Schrank, 1803) from central Balkan

AB  - The Balkans is Austropotamobius torrentium (Schrank, 1803) hotspot. In its central parts (Serbia) three main stone crayfish phylogroups are present: CSE (Central and South-East European), SB (Southern Balkans) and LD (Lika and Dalmatia). In order to assess the morphological variability of the stone crayfish we analyzed ten populations from the central Balkans. A total of 145 adult crayfish (total length over 60 mm) were measured during our 2017 field study and 21 linear parameters and individual weight were taken. All measurements were standardized by postorbital length. Of analyzed crayfish 80 were males and 65 females. Performed non-parametric tests (Kruskal-Wallis) have shown that males and females differ in majority of parameters, including those related to weight. Discriminant analysis showed that abdominal and claw widths were the most important for sex separation, with the first one having larger values in females, while the second one being larger in males. Regarding populations, non-parametric tests showed that only stable parameters among male populations were a few characteristics of abdomen, claws and weight, while in female populations those were a bit more numerous. Canonical discriminate analysis was used to assess spatial morphological variability among studied populations (10 populations for males, and 8 for females). The results have shown that separation among male samples is more pronounced than in females. Alongside the first root a clear distinction of Uvac (CSE phylogroup) and Rasina (SB phylogroup) populations from the rest can be observed, while along the second root these two populations differ. Considering that analyzed populations belong to all three main phylogroups our results suggest that morphological variability of the stone crayfish is related more to specific environmental conditions (adaptations) than to separate phylogenetic lineages.

AB  - Our study aims to build upon a prior studies of crayfish distribution by consolidating findings from our fifteen years field research and summarizing existing published data. In Serbian freshwater ecosystems, we have identified the stone crayfish Austropotamobius torrentium, the noble crayfish Astacus astacus, and the narrow-clawed crayfish Pontastacus leptodactylus as native species. Unfortunately, our ecosystems have been penetrated by two invasive species: the spiny-cheek crayfish Faxonius limosus, first discovered in 2004, and the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus, more recently found in 2020. Fifteen years since the last research, we have observed that the most commonly found native crayfish is the stone crayfish, documented at 206 sites in 131 freshwater ecosystems, followed by the noble crayfish (46 sites in 31 freshwater ecosystems) and the narrow-clawed crayfish (22 sites in 11 freshwater ecosystems). Field observations have shown that changes in habitat and the increasing impact of climate change (significant droughts and floods over the past decade), primarily affect native crayfish populations. Understanding species distribution is fundamental to a wide range of biological research. Gathering additional data on species distribution is essential for enhancing our understanding of biodiversity, the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, conservation planning, climate change adaptation, and the management of invasive species. Moreover, distribution data is crucial for monitoring endangered species, such as the stone and noble crayfish, which are strictly protected under the Rulebook on the Proclamation and Protection of Strictly Protected and Protected Wild Species of Plants, Animals, and Mushrooms ("Official Gazette of RS" no. 5/2010, 47/2011, 32/2016 and 98/2016).

AB  - Reconstructing the origin and historical
biogeography of the Austropotamobius torrentium is
hampered by insufficient phylogeographic coverage
of the Balkans and deep contradictions in previous
molecular dating. The present work extends the phylogeographic
coverage to Serbia, a country crucial for
understanding the species southward dispersal. Our
analysis revealed that the Southern Balkans lineage
occurs in most of the country, the Central and southeastern
Europe lineage is restricted to the southwest
and northeast of the country, while a single population
in the north of the country harbors the Lika and
Dalmatia lineage, which was previously thought to be
restricted to the northern-central Dinarides. Dataset
expansion led to revised phylogenetic relationships,
which indicated that the Apuseni lineage is not nested
within Northern-central Dinarides lineages but arose
after the most basal split within Austropotamobius
torrentium. This ‘Apuseni first’ phylogeny provides
a new perspective for molecular dating, according to
which the split between Austropotamobius pallipes
and A. torrentium took place in the Late Oligocene,
while the formation of the phyletic lineages and the
dispersal from the Dinarides to Serbia occurred in
the late Miocene and is probably associated with the
complex and protracted process of disintegration of
the Neogene freshwater lakes in southeastern Europe.

AB  - Slatkovodni ekosistemi su, zbog sve izraženijeg antropogenog pritiska (zagađivanje, izgradnja brana i hidroelektrana, regulacija tokova, degradacija staništa, eksploatacija šljunka, klimatske promene...), najugroženiji od svih ekosistema na Zemlji. Navedene aktivnosti imaju nesagledive negativne efekte na akvatične beskičmenjake koji ceo ili deo svog životnog veka provode u vodi. U toku 2021. godine izvršena je procena stepena ugroženosti akvatičnih beskičmenjaka na osnovu IUCN kriterijuma. Uzimajući u obzir samo najugroženije kategorije prema IUCN kriterijumima (CR, EN, VU, NT), 82 vrste vodenih beskičmenjaka u Srbiji je ugroženo i predloženo za Crvenu knjigu akvatičnih beskičmenjaka. Larve i adulti vodenih insekata (35 vrsta) i slatkovodni rakovi (34 vrste) su najugroženiji, a pored njih ugroženo je i 10 puževa, dve školjke i jedna medicinska pijavica. Za 26 vrsta predložen je status kritično ugrožene vrste (CR), 23 su sa statusom ugrožene vrste (EN), ranjivih vrsta (VU) ima 17, dok je 7 vrsta gotovo ugroženo (NT). Pored nabrojanih, za 8 vrsta nema dovoljno podataka o ugroženosti (nedovoljno poznate vrste, DD), a vilinski konjic Leucorrhinia caudalis sa područja Srbije je isčezao (RE). Veliki broj ugroženih vrsta vodenih makroinvertebrata u Srbiji, među kojima su endemiti i stenoendemiti, ukazuje na „alarmantno“ stanje pre svega zbog staništa koja ovi organizmi naseljavaju, te bi zaštita istih svakako bio prioritet. Veoma važno je preduzeti sve mere, kako zakonske tako i naučne, kako navedene ugrožene vrste ne bi u skorijoj budućnosti iščezle sa prostora Srbije. Svakako da bi Crvena knjiga akvatičnih beskičmenjaka trebala da bude polazna osnova za sve aktivnosti, koje mogu da preuzmu nadležne institucije i nevladine organizacije u Srbiji, u cilju zaštite vodenih staništa i ugroženih vrsta vodenih beskičmenjaka.
AB  - Слатководни екосистеми су, због све израженијег антропогеног притиска
(загађивање, изградња брана и хидроелектрана, регулација токова, деградација
станишта, експлоатација шљунка, климатске промене...), најугроженији од свих
екосистема на Земљи. Наведене активности имају несагледиве негативне ефекте на
акватичне бескичмењаке који цео или део свог животног века проводе у води. У
току 2021. године извршена је процена степена угрожености акватичних
бескичмењака на основу IUCN критеријума. Узимајући у обзир само најугроженије
категорије према IUCN критеријумима (CR, EN, VU, NT), 82 врсте водених
бескичмењака у Србији је угроженo и предложено за Црвену књигу акватичних
бескичмењака. Ларве и адулти водених инсеката (35 врста) и слатководни ракови
(34 врсте) су најугроженији, а поред њих угрожено је и 10 пужева, две шкољке и
једна медицинска пијавица. За 26 врста предложен је статус критично угрожене
врсте (CR), 23 су са статусом угрожене врсте (EN), рањивих врста (VU) има 17, док
је 7 врста готово угрожено (NT). Поред набројаних, за 8 врста нема довољно
података о угрожености (недовољно познате врсте, DD), а вилински коњиц
Leucorrhinia caudalis са подручја Србије је исчезао (RE). Велики број угрожених
врста водених макроинвертебрата у Србији, међу којима су ендемити и
стеноендемити, указује на „алармантно“ стање пре свега због станишта која ови
организми насељавају, те би заштита истих свакако био приоритет. Веома важно је
предузети све мере, како законске тако и научне, како наведене угрожене врсте не
би у скоријој будућности ишчезле са простора Србије. Свакако да би Црвена књига
акватичних бескичмењака требала да буде полазна основа за све активности, које
могу да преузму надлежне институције и невладине организације у Србији, у циљу
заштите водених станишта и угрожених врста водених бескичмењака.

категорије према IUCN критеријумима (CR, EN, VU, NT), 82 врсте водених
бескичмењака у Србији је угроженo и предложено за Црвену књигу акватичних
бескичмењака. Ларве и адулти водених инсеката (35 врста) и слатководни ракови
(34 врсте) су најугроженији, а поред њих угрожено је и 10 пужева, две шкољке и
једна медицинска пијавица. За 26 врста предложен је статус критично угрожене
врсте (CR), 23 су са статусом угрожене врсте (EN), рањивих врста (VU) има 17, док
је 7 врста готово угрожено (NT). Поред набројаних, за 8 врста нема довољно
података о угрожености (недовољно познате врсте, DD), а вилински коњиц
Leucorrhinia caudalis са подручја Србије је исчезао (RE). Велики број угрожених
врста водених макроинвертебрата у Србији, међу којима су ендемити и
стеноендемити, указује на „алармантно“ стање пре свега због станишта која ови
организми насељавају, те би заштита истих свакако био приоритет. Веома важно је
предузети све мере, како законске тако и научне, како наведене угрожене врсте не
би у скоријој будућности ишчезле са простора Србије. Свакако да би Црвена књига
акватичних бескичмењака требала да буде полазна основа за све активности, које
могу да преузму надлежне институције и невладине организације у Србији, у циљу
заштите водених станишта и угрожених врста водених бескичмењака.",

AB  - Stone crayfish, an endangered and protected species in Republic of Serbia, inhabits mountain areas of
the country. The knowledge and attitude of children from two primary schools (Pirot and Bosilegrad)
towards this species was tested. Two surveys with the same questionnaire were conducted. The first
one was held at the end of the 6th grade, and the second was conducted a year later. The second
survey has shown moderate increase in children's knowledge. To better protect and conserve rare and
endangered taxa it is necessary to raise awareness of the public, particularly in the areas where these
species are present. Attitudes, values, behaviour, knowledge of citizen and especially young
generations form a good basis for the protection and sustainable development planning in local
community.

AB  - Potočni rak Austropotamobius torrentium (Schrank, 1803) je autohtona vrsta Evrope koja naseljava čiste brdsko-planinske potoke sa kamenito-šljunkovitom podlogom. Zbog opadanjućeg trenda brojnosti populacija i ugroženosti staništa A. torrentium je zaštićen u većini zemalja. Za bolju ocenu statusa ugroženosti u Srbiji, neophodno je prikupiti što više podataka o ovoj autohtonoj vrsti, što je i cilj rada. Detaljna terenska istraživanja sprovedena su tokom 2017. godine od juna do oktobra i obuhvatila su 45 vodotokova u Srbiji. Rakovi su hvatani ručno ili uz pomoć zamki primenom standardizovanog protokola. Prisustvo vrste prvi put je zabeleženo na ukupno 8 vodotokova. Kao najinteresantniji nalaz može se izdvojiti populacija zabeležena na Fruškoj gori (Rakovački potok) koja predstavlja najseverniji nalaz vrste kod nas. Možemo izdvojiti i nalaz sa Divčibara, gde je u reci Kamenici pored potočnog raka zabeleženo i prisutvo druge nativne vrste Astacus astacus Fabricius, 1775. Prema novijim istraživanjima, zagađenje vodenih staništa se ne smatra faktorom ugrožavanja ove vrste u Srbiji, ali je potrebno ukazati na rizik koji predstavljaju mini hidrocentrale, čija izgradnja je u ekspanziji u poslednjoj deceniji. Fragmentacija i degradacija staništa predstavljaju ozbiljan rizik za opstanak populacija ove zaštićene vrste, te je stoga neophodan nastavak istraživanja i sprovođenje standardizovanog monitoringa radi bolje ocene statusa i nivoa ugroženosti.

AB  - The native crayfish species Austropotamobius torrentium presumably inhabits mountainous streams at higher altitudes. As Serbia is one of few countries in its native range with general lack of data regarding conservation status of A. torrentium, there is a need to provide up-to-date basic data regarding distribution and population status of the species. Therefore, as a starting point for planned future investigation in this paper we present a current state of knowledge of A. torrentium distribution in the target area. To date based on previously published and new findings, stone crayfish was found at 48 localities, covering seven major river basins, in total.
