AB  - Simple Summary: Rana temporaria is one of the most widespread Palearctic brown frogs, with two
main genetic clades in Europe, geographic spatial pattern of which is insufficiently known. We
analyzed samples from the understudied western and central Balkans to evaluate the haplotype
diversity of widely used 16SrRNA and MT-CYTB mitochondrial gene sequences and to recognize
the contour of a possible contact zone between the main clades. The results revealed a suture
zone between theWestern and Eastern Clades in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. Overall,
haplotype diversity in the western and central Balkans sample is high. Harboring both main genetic
clades of R. temporaria qualifies the Balkan Peninsula as another important center of species’ genetic
diversity, as well as rich in unique haplotypes.
Abstract: Rana temporaria is one of the most widespread Palearctic brown frogs. We aimed to

More than a decade of monitoring population abundance in three anuran species from Central Serbia

AB  - Amphibians are the most endangered of all vertebrates; therefore, maintaining a
long-term monitoring of local populations is important even for the widespread
species. Neglecting the research on common species might result in many silent local
extinctions. The negative effects of environmental changes can be reflected in a
reduction of a population’s size, with a strongest impact on species that reproduce
during early spring (like Bufo bufo – common toad and Rana dalmatina – agile frog),
although other species (Pelophylax esculentus complex – green frogs) could also be
affected. Decrease in size of common toad populations was recorded in parts of Great
Britain, the Czech Republic, Italy and Switzerland, while agile frog populations have
usually been reported as stable. Declines in population size of some green frog
populations were reported in parts of Poland and Turkey.
These three taxa were monitored from 2011 to 2021 in a permanent pond near
village Zuce, at the southern outskirts of Belgrade (Serbia). Population size of the
common toad seems to be declining over the years (Kendall’s Tau = -0.60; Z = -2.57; p
= 0.01). Number of females was constantly low, which raises concern. Fluctuation in
population size was registered for both agile frogs and green frogs, with 2021 being
the best year as most egg clutches and individuals were spotted. Density dependence
effect on population size was confirmed for the agile frog (Kendall’s Tau = -0.56; Z = -
2.09; p = 0.04). Within a year, the activity of green frogs was increasing over the months
until May/June and then it was decreasing until December. The largest number of
individuals was spotted in May. There was a slight inversion in that decline in
September, when maximum and minimum numbers of individuals were higher than in
August. There were no correlations among the species regarding population size
fluctuations.

AB  - One long-term studied local population of Bufo bufo situated in the outskirts of
southeastern Belgrade (Serbia) was assessed for changes in body size and age over a
17 years period, at different moments: A (2005: n=47), and B (2013-2014: n=74) for
females, and A (2005: n=94), B (2013-2014: n=151) and C (2020-2021; n=302) for
males. The snout-vent length of the females did not change over time (Mann Whitney
U: Z=-0.89; p>0.05), but their body mass was higher in moment B (Mann Whitney U:
Z=-4.7; p<0.05). The snout-vent length of the males increased over the study period
(Kruskal-Wallis: Chi-sq=26.82; p<0.05), but their body mass remained similar
(Kruskal-Wallis: Chi-sq=26.82; p>0.05). We observed a sexual dimorphism, females
being larger than males (SD =1.31, Mann Whitney U: Z=-16.08; p<0.05). The median
age increased over time in both females (moment A - 4 years old; moment B - 5 years
old; Mann Whitney U; Z=-6.97; p<0.05), and males (moment A - 4 years old, B - 5 years
old, C - 5 years old, Kruskal-Wallis: Chi-sq=40.68; p<0.05). Age of sexual maturity (i.e.,
minimum age observed) remained similar over the study period in both females (3
years old) and males (2 years old). Longevity (i.e., maximum age observed) increased
over the study period, from 6 to 7 years old in females, and from 6 to 9 years old in
males. We revealed positive changes in both body size and age of the studied
population over a 17-years period of monitoring. Thus, our study provides a baseline
that will help monitor and quantify the impact of habitat changes that were only
recently observed in the area (i.e., deforestation, since 2019).

AB  - The common frog (Rana temporaria Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most
widespread and abundant amphibians in Europe, except in the southern parts of the
continent, where distribution is apparently fragmented. It has the greatest genetic
variability of all western Palearctic brown frogs and it is extremely variable in
morphology and ecological preferences, also. The Republic of Serbia is a country of
particular interest in terms of amphibian conservation because of the genetically and
morphologically diverse populations of several amphibian species.
We analysed nucleotide variability of mitochondrial DNA sequences of partial
MT-CYTB gene (461 bp) of 27 specimens of R. temporaria species. Samples (eggs and
tail tips of adult individuals) were collected in two periods, 1986-2007 and 2013-2017,
in 14 localities in Serbia. The analyses revealed nine different haplotypes separated
into two main clusters: north-eastern and eastern (localities Bela Crkva, Grza, Bigar,
Đerdap, Stara planina) and central, west, south-western, and south-eastern Serbia
(localities Jagodnja, Lučani, Zlatibor, Goč, Kopaonik, Prokletije, Šar planina, Oštrozub,
and Vlasina). Lučani and Grza populations had two different haplotypes each.
Our results confirmed previous findings that the common frog shows
phylogeographic substructuring. The existence of two genetically diverged population
groups on the territory of Serbia suggests that these populations should be adequately
protected in terms of the conservation of their breeding places and suitable terrestrial
habitats. In Serbia, R. temporaria habitats are currently not only fragmented but also
under intensive anthropogenic pressure, due to intensive urbanization, particularly in
the mountain areas and the promotion of non-sustainable tourism, which makes them
highly vulnerable. Therefore, there is a need for more precise data about species’
phylogeny and distribution, both at the national and regional level, to define
conservation priorities in the near future

AB  - Жаба травњача (Rana temporaria Linnaeus, 1758) у Србији насељава претежно планинске и високопланинске пределе. Међутим, због фрагментисаног ареала и нарушених станишта сматра се ретком врстом. Према националној Црвеној Књизи водоземаца, а на основу IUCN категоризације, има статус скоро угрожене врсте (NT – „Near Threatened“), а према Правилнику о проглашењу и заштити строго заштићених и заштићених дивљих биљака, животиња и гљива на територији Србије је строго заштићена врста.
У овом истраживању анализирани су узорци ткива (јаја, врх репа пуноглавца, врх прста адулта) од укупно 28 јединки травњаче са 14 локалитета на територији Србије сакупљених у периоду 1986-2007. и 2013-17. Парцијалне секвенце 16S rRNK гена митохондријалне ДНК (395 бп) показале су постојање шест хаплотипова, сврстаних у две групе које су и географски јасно раздвојене. Првој припадају јединке са локалитета Бела Црква, Бигар, Грза, Ђердап и Стара планина, а другој оне са подручја централне, западне, југозападне и југоисточне Србије (Лучани, Копаоник, Гоч, Јагодња, Проклетије, Златибор, Власина, Оштрозуб, Шар планина). На локалитету Лучани присутна су два различита хаплотипа.
Анализа гена 16S rRNK се показала као адекватна метода за испитивање генетичке и филогеографске структурираности врсте R. temporaria која се налази под интензивним антропогеним притиском. Због угрожавања генофонда, пре свега губитком повољних станшта и променом климе, постоји опасност драстичног смањења дистрибуције ове врсте у Србији, те је неопходно донешење мера у циљу њене заштите и конзервације.

AB  - Hydropower plants (HPPs) have a strong environmental impact on freshwater wetlands. Small diversion HPPs (SDHPPs) with 0.1–10 MW of installed power, redirect water from small mountainous rivers into several-kilometer-long tubes, disrupting complex dynamics of local aquatic food webs and their interactions with neighbor terrestrial food webs. It certainly affects local aquatic communities, but it is often neglected that two highly threatened vertebrate groups—amphibians and reptiles—which live in and around these wetlands, could be affected as well. In the Balkan peninsula, a part of Southeastern Europe, SDHPPs recently became very attractive and profitable for potential investors after they were proclaimed as eligible for subsidies from the national budget. As a result, in year 2020, the maximal projected number of SHPPs in the Balkans increased to 4,556. According to the literature data, ~28% of amphibian species in the Balkan Peninsula use small rivers and streams in the upper parts of watersheds as feeding, breeding and/or nursery habitats. Additionally, 38% of the total number of reptile species in Europe are registered in the hilly/mountainous areas of the peninsula, and 33% of these species strictly need humid habitats. The attempt of this mini-review is to present the facts which show that SHPPs and DSHPPs, in the way they are currently being installed, present harmful energy solution for the biodiversity of the mountain parts of Balkan peninsula, particularly for local amphibian and reptile populations which rely on lotic aquatic ecosystems and/or humid terrestrial habitats.

Uticaj variranja sredinskih parametara na strukturu populacije obične krastače (Bufo bufo)

AB  - Populacija obične krastače posmatrana je u sezoni razmnožavanja tokom pet uzastopnih godina. Odrasle jedinke su prebrojavane, merene i uzorkovane radi određivanja starosti (skeletohronologija). Glavni cilj je bio ispitati uticaj variranja odabranih meteoroloških parametara na fenologiju razmnožavanja populacije i promene brojnosti, efektivne veličine, odnosa polova, uzrasne strukture i kondicionog indeksa mase jedinki unutar adultnog dela populacije. Proverena je i povezanost između fekunditeta ženki, njihove starosti i veličine tela. Fekunditet je pretpostavljen poređenjem sa ranijim istraživanjima iste populacije. Utvrđen je trend ka povećanju prosečne dnevne temperature vazduha u periodu pre početka razmnožavanja, ali on nije uticao na promenu vremenske dinamike sezone parenja. Utvrđena je pozitivna korelacija između zima sa više padavina i broja jedinki koje su učestvovale u razmnožavanju. Efektivna veličina i uzrasna struktura populacije značajno su se menjali tokom godina, ali nezavisno od variranja meteoroloških parametara. Utvrđena je slaba negativna korelacija između toplijih zima i vrednosti kondicionog indeksa jedinki, koji je takođe značajno varirao tokom godina. Adultnih mužjaka je bilo znatno više od adultnih ženki. Ženke su bile veće od mužjaka. Indeks polnog dimorfizma u veličini tela je varirao između godina. Asortativno ukrštanje nije potvrđeno. Mužjaci u ampleksusu su bili krupniji od mužjaka bez ženki, ali nisu imali veći kondicioni indeks mase. Ženke veće mase tela imale su veći pretpostavljeni fekunditet, ali se on nije značajno menjao sa starošću. Utvrđene su značajne fluktuacije strukture i dinamike analizirane populacije, ali je potrebno više godina posmatranja da bi se utvrdio mogući uticaj variranja meteoroloških parametara.
AB  - One population of common toads was monitored on the breeding grounds for five consecutive years (2011–2015). Individuals were counted, measured and samples of hind leg toe phalange were taken for age assessment by sкeletochronology. The main goal was to analyse the effects of some weather parameters on reproductive phenology of this population. Change of effective and census population size, sex ratio, age structure and body mass condition index (BMCI), as well as relations among female fecundity, age, and body size, were also analysed in adult part of this population over time. Female fecundity was calculated regarding body mass, derived by comparison with earlier study. The trend was found toward increase of average daily air temperature in period before start of the breeding season, but it didn’t have impact on change in temporal dynamics of the breeding season. Positive correlation was found between winters with more precipitation and reproductive population size. Effective population size and age structure significantly varied along years, but independently from variation of weather parameters. Weak negative correlation was found between warmer winters and BMCI. BMCI also varied significantly along years. Females were larger than males. Index of sexual dimorphism in body size varied along years. Assortative mating was not confirmed. Males recorded in amplexus were bigger than solitary males, but generally didn’t differ in BMCI. Heavier females also had higher projected fecundity, and it didn’t change with age. Significant fluctuations of structure and dynamics were recorded in this population, but more years of monitoring are required to check possible impact of variation of weather parameters.

from the southeastern part of its range. Phenological data were collected from 2001 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2017 and compared to
open-access daily weather data from a nearby weather station. Data analysis revealed no significant effect of weather on initiation of
breeding and a negative relationship between mean daily humidity and mean cloud cover on the duration of breeding season (P = 0.03).
Further analysis showed a decreasing trend in breeding season humidity in the past 70 years. Our results predict a tendency toward
longer toad breeding seasons in years with drier winter/spring. A projected decrease in humidity in this region could prolong toad
breeding season, potentially exposing adults to higher predation. Therefore, the scenario of further decline in our study population
should be considered and conservation measures planned accordingly.

Fluctuations in population abundance in two anurans from Central Serbia

AB  - We monitored the population size of the agile frog (Rana dalmatina) and the common toad (Bufo bufo) from 2011 or 2012, respectively, to the year 2017 at a syntopic breeding site in the vicinity of Belgrade. Adult R. dalmatina population size had minor fluctuations during the years of study (from 351 to 108 frogs). On the contrary, the adult B. bufo population was widely fluctuating towards decline (from 1158 to 141 toads). In both species, population fluctuations were not significantly related to variation of meteorological parameters (air temperature, humidity, precipitation). Density dependence effects on population size were not detected in either species. Apart from possible effects of climate change, the indicated trend towards decline of the monitored B. bufo population could also be the outcome of common population fluctuations or of increasing anthropogenic impact (vicinity of settlement and agricultural land). More years of monitoring more than one population are required to obtain precise information. Nevertheless, our results seem to be coherent with other studies that recommend conservation action for this species.

AB  - In this study, we present updated distribution data for all three brown frog species (Rana spp.) inhabiting Serbia. The data provided consists of newly collected field records and compiled data previously published in literature or via Internet. Of the three species found in Serbia, Rana dalmatina is the most widespread, present in all three altitudinal regions and all biogeographical regions. Rana graeca is confined to Mountain-valley altitudinal region in permanent fastflowing rivers or streams and it reaches its northern range boundaries in Serbia. Rana temporaria is the rarest of the three, with fragmented range restricted to the high mountains or few isolated lowland populations, and in the north-eastern Serbia, it is vicariant with R. graeca in canyons and gorges of montane rivers. The presence of Rana arvalis in Serbia is mentioned in literature but was not confirmed during the subsequent field surveys, so we consider it only as a potential species for the Serbian batrachofauna. The brown frog faunal composition of Serbia is identical to that of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia and Montenegro, while it is somewhat different from that of Hungary and Romania and the most different from Croatia and Slovenia. Serbian brown frogs belong to European (R. temporaria) and South-European (R. dalmatina, R. graeca) chorotypes. All species of brown frogs present or potentially present in Serbia and their habitats are identified as great conservation priorities.

AB  - We recorded the movements of adult Eastern Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni boettgeri) in a local population situated in a complex forested habitat system. The average total movement range size (TMRS) calculated over three consecutive years was 4.56 ha and 7.53 ha for males and females, respectively. The largest estimated TMRS of male and female tortoises was 27 ha and 90 ha, respectively. Six females and three males (or 9% and 4%, respectively, of the overall sample) had a movement range size (MRS) greater than 10 ha. Significant differences between male and female MRS were not detected. Body size had no influence on the MRS of individuals in the sample, except on the core movement range size (CMRS) in males. Although the collected data did not enable calculation of the home range in the studied population, the results indicate that the calculated average TMRS of local Hermann tortoises is larger than the average home range in some other populations. Therefore, in the absence of information on the home range size of local adult tortoises, the MRS could be a suitable alternative for planning local species reserves.
