AB  - Without being aware of their chemical composition, many cultures have used herbaceous peony roots for medicinal purposes. Modern phytopreparations intended for use in human therapy require specific knowledge about the chemistry of peony roots and their biological activities. In this study, ethanol–water extracts were prepared by maceration and microwave- and ultrasound-assisted extractions (MAE and UAE, respectively) in order to obtain bioactive molecules from the roots of Paeonia tenuifolia L., Paeonia peregrina Mill., and Paeonia officinalis L. wild growing in Serbia. Chemical characterization; polyphenol and flavonoid content; antioxidant, multianti-enzymatic, and antibacterial activities of extracts; and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (GID) of hot water extracts were performed. The strongest anti-cholinesterase activity was observed in PT extracts. The highest anti-ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical potential was observed in PP extracts, whereas against DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals), the best results were achieved with PO extracts. Regarding antibacterial activity, extracts were strongly potent against Bacillus cereus. A molecular docking simulation was conducted to gather insights into the binding affinity and interactions of polyphenols and other Paeonia-specific molecules in the active sites of tested enzymes. In vitro GID of Paeonia teas showed a different recovery and behavior of the individual bioactives, with an increased recovery of methyl gallate and digallate and a decreased recovery of paeoniflorin and its derivatives. PT (Gulenovci) and PP (Pirot) extracts obtained by UAE and M were more efficient in the majority of the bioactivity assays. This study represents an initial step toward the possible application of Paeonia root extracts in pharmacy, medicine, and food technologies.

AB  - This study aimed to characterize mixtures of goat milk proteins and Agaricus blazei Murrill (ABM) extracts (aqueous, AE and polysaccharides, PE). The mixtures showed stable particles with ζ-potential more negative than −41.1 mV. The addition of AMB extracts to goat milk did not result in a significant particle size change, whereas their addition to heated goat milk significantly increased mean particle diameter (from 194 nm to 225 nm). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that ABM extracts provoked changes in the secondary structure of goat milk proteins and interactions between polysaccharides and milk proteins predominantly via hydrogen and/or glycoside bonds and hydrophobic interactions. The milk protein profiles revealed proteolytic activity in mixtures with AE resulting in the formation of five new polypeptides. The different microstructures of mixtures with AE and PE were found by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). A schematic representation of possible milk proteins-ABM extracts interactions has been given.

Phytochemical composition of hydro-ethanolic extracts from Cucumis metuliferus E. Mey. fruit peels

AB  - According to recent research, a variety of inedible portions of fruits and vegetables, as well as food waste, are excellent sources of phytochemicals that may be isolated and reintroduced as natural food additives into the food chain [1]. Besides the food industry, natural product from non-edible parts of the fruits of Cucurbitaceae family can be used in other industries such as cosmetic and pharmaceutical and the fact that the plants in this family are also used medicinally makes them excellent research subjects for the study of plants with high therapeutic potential [2]. The focus of our study was the solid/liquid extraction of lyophilized fruit peels of Cucumis metuliferus E. Mey. (Cucurbitaceae) under different extraction conditions such as extraction time (min), ethanol/water ratio (%) and power of ultrasonic bath (%). It was aimed as well to determine the phytochemical composition of 25 different ethanolic and hydro-ethanolic extracts by performing UHPLC-QToF-MS analysis. The Figure 1 shows the fruit of Horned Melon (C. metuliferus) and the exocarp as part of fruit used for extraction. Under different extraction conditions percentage yields of the dry extracts varied between 26.37% - 43.98%, obtaining the optimal extraction conditions as follows: EtOH (%): 50; Amplitude (%): 40; Time (min): 30. Furthermore, chemical profiling of the extracts revealed the presence of the following compounds: p-hydroxybenzoic acid, dihydroxybenzoic acid, galloyl pentoside, dihydroxybenzoyl pentoside, hydroxybenzoyl hexoside, vanilloyl hexoside and hydroxybenzoyl rhamnosyl hexoside. This is the first study that highlights the optimization of extraction conditions of the C. metuliferus peels, as well as chemical identification of bioactive compounds present in the extracts. Our future observations will be oriented towards exploring bioactive properties of the obtained extracts and further incorporations in food matrices.

AB  - The aim of this study was to compile a detailed phytochemical profile and assess the antioxidant properties of bee-collected pollen (PBP) obtained from corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas L.) plants. To achieve this, a lipid fraction was prepared for quantifying fatty acids using GC-FID. Extractable and alkaline-hydrolysable PBP fractions (obtained from a defatted sample) were used to determine the qualitative and quantitative profiles of phenolic compounds, phenylamides and alkaloids using UHPLC/Q-ToF-MS. Additionally, various spectrophotometric assays (TAC, FRP, CUPRAC, DPPH⦁) were conducted to evaluate the antioxidant properties. Phenolic compounds were more present in the extractable fraction than in the alkaline-hydrolysable fraction. Luteolin was the predominant compound in the extractable fraction, followed by tricetin and various derivatives of kaempferol. This study presents one of the first reports on the quantification of tricetin aglycone outside the Myrtaceae plant family. The alkaline-hydrolysable fraction exhibited a different phenolic profile, with a significantly lower amount of phenolics. Kaempferol/derivatives, specific compounds like ferulic and 5-carboxyvanillic acids, and (epi)catechin 3-O-gallate were the predominant compounds in this fraction. Regarding phenylamides, the extractable fraction demonstrated a diverse range of these bioactive compounds, with a notable abundance of different spermine derivatives. In contrast, the hydrolysable fraction contained six spermine derivatives and one spermidine derivative. The examined fractions also revealed the presence of seventeen different alkaloids, belonging to the benzylisoquinoline, berberine and isoquinoline classes. The fatty-acid profile confirmed the prevalence of unsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, both fractions exhibited significant antioxidant activity, with the extractable fraction showing particularly high activity. Among the assays conducted, the CUPRAC assay highlighted the exceptional ability of PBP’s bioactive compounds to reduce cupric ions.

Regarding phenylamides, the extractable fraction demonstrated a diverse range of these bioactive compounds, with a notable abundance of different spermine derivatives. In contrast, the hydrolysable fraction contained six spermine derivatives and one spermidine derivative. The examined fractions also revealed the presence of seventeen different alkaloids, belonging to the benzylisoquinoline, berberine and isoquinoline classes. The fatty-acid profile confirmed the prevalence of unsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, both fractions exhibited significant antioxidant activity, with the extractable fraction showing particularly high activity. Among the assays conducted, the CUPRAC assay highlighted the exceptional ability of PBP’s bioactive compounds to reduce cupric ions.",

AB  - Introduction: The food industry increasingly utilizes plant extracts over synthetic antioxidants for preventing lipid oxidation, fighting foodborne pathogens, and prolonging shelf life of various products. The bioactive potential varies among plant species. Traditionally, extracts from rosehip fruits (Rosa canina L.) have preventive and curative effects on diabetes, memory disorders and cancer. In addition, these extracts are often used as antimicrobial, antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory agents.
Objective: The aim of this work was to investigate phytochemical composition and biological potential of aqueous extracts from the fruits of R. canina. 
Methodology: The lyophilized aqueous extract was analyzed using Agilent 1290 Infinity ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) system in conjunction with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The extracts were analyzed for total polyphenol and flavonoid content (TPC and TFC, respectively) using spectrophotometric methods. The biological activities of aqueous extracts were evaluated under in vitro conditions. The Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and DPPH radical scavenging assay were used to investigate antioxidant potential. Antimicrobial activity was determined using microdilution assay and crystal violet and MTT tests were used for evaluation of antibiofilm activity.
Results and conclusions: R. canina fruit's aqueous extract had 32 phenolic compounds, which were classified into eight classes. Qualitative phytochemical analyses showed that this extract contained flavan-3-ols and procyanidins, dominated by epicatechin (624.354 mg/100g) and a proanthocyanidin dimer hexoside type B (457.016 mg/100g). Furthermore, extract was high in total phenolic content (412.25 TE mg/g) but low in total flavonoid compounds (0.73 QE mg/g). The highest antioxidant capacity was measured by FRAP assay (103.29 AAE mg/g), whereas notable antimicrobial properties were determined as well, with a standout 67.68% antibiofilm activity against Candida spp. at 0.5 MIC. These findings highlight potential of R. canina as a dietary source of antioxidants and antimicrobial agents.

AB  - Kontinuirani rast tržišta piva i alkoholnih pića otvorio je nove mogućnosti za poboljšanje ukusa, arome i korisnosti ovih napitaka. Već hiljadu godina unazad je poznato da dodavanje različitih biljnih sastojaka u piće menja njihov ukus i svojstva. Međutim, moderna tehnologija olakšava postizanje željenih karakteristika i nudi nove mogućnosti za terapeutske efekte i senzorna poboljšanja ovog tradicionalnog pića.
U ovom radu su predstavljene hemijska analiza i bioaktivna svojstva etanolnog i vodenog ekstrakta Prunus spinosa L. (trnjine) kao potencijalnog dodatka pivu, sa ciljem povećanja funkcionalnih karakteristika i senzornih osobina ovog napitka.
Hemijske analize korišćenjem UHPLC-QToF-MS pokazale su prisustvo: derivata hidroksibenzoeve kiseline (heksozid vanilinske kiseline do 141.476 mg/100 g ekstrakta), derivata hidroksicimetne kiseline (izomer kafeoilkvinske kiseline do 306.608 mg/100 g ekstrakta, feruloilkvinske kiseline do 225.884 mg/100 g ekstrakta) i derivata flavona (apigenin 180.094 mg/100g ekstrakta).
Procena bioaktivnih svojstava nesumnjivo je pokazala da oba ekstrakta trnjine imaju umeren do dobar antimikrobni potencijal, kao i sposobnost da inhibiraju formiranje biofilma, pri čemu je etanolni ekstrakt pokazao sveukupni bolji potencijal u inhibiciji rasta mikroorganizama. Najbolji antimikrobni potencijal je pokazan kod vodenog ekstrakta prema Bacillus cereus koja je poznati patogen identifikovan u namirnicama (MIC 0.5 mg/mL, MBC 1.00 mg/mL), dok su druge testirane bakterije bile otpornije na aktivnost testiranih ekstrakata (MIC u opsegu od 1.0- 4.0 mg/mL i MBC u opsegu od 2.00-8.00 mg/mL). Rezultati antifungalne aktivnosti su pokazali da ekstrakti prilično ujednačeno deluju inhibitorno na rast testiranih mikrogljiva, uz MIK vrednosti 1.00 mg/mL i MFK 2.00 mg/mL. Detaljnija analiza antimikrobne aktivnosti pokazala je da testirani ekstrakti trnjine značajno inhibiraju formiranje biofilma Candida albicans ATCC 10231; oba testirana uzorka su inhibirala formiranje biofilma na subinhibitornim koncentracijama približno 67.00 %. Uočena aktivnost se može pripisati prisustvu različitih fenolnih jedinjenja.
Imajući u vidu poznat gorak ukus P. spinosa kao i pokazana bioaktivna svojstva njegovih ekstrakata, verujemo da bi ova biljka bila odličan funkcionalni sastojak koji će se dobro uklopiti u jedinstvena senzorna svojstva piva i sličnih napitaka. Predloženo pivo bi čak moglo da pruži dodatne zdravstvene efekte potrošačima, balansirajući između zadovoljstva i njihove želje za zdravim sastojcima.
AB  - The continuous growth of beer and beverage market has opened new opportunities to improve their flavor, aroma, and benefits. It has been known for thousands of years that adding various herbs to beer changes the taste and properties of this beverage. However, modern technology makes it easier to achieve the desired properties and provides useful qualities for therapeutic effects and sensory improvement of traditional beer. This paper presents chemical analysis and bioactive properties of ethanolic and aqueous extract of Prunus spinosa L. (blackthorn) as a potential ingredient for beer to improve functional and sensory properties of this beverage.
Chemical analyses by UHPLC-QToF-MS revealed presence of: hidroxybenzoic acid derivatives (vanillic acid hexoside up to 141.476 mg/100g extract), hidroxycinnamic acid derivatives (caffeoylquinic acid isomer up to 306.608 mg/100g extract and feruloylquinic acid up to 225.884 mg/100g extract) and flavone derivatives (apigenin 180.094 mg/100g extract).
The evaluation of bioactive properties undoubtedly showed that both blackthorn extracts have moderate to rather good antimicrobial and antibiofilm potential, with ethanolic extract being slightly better in terms of inhibiting microbial growth. The best antimicrobial potential was observed with aqueous extract towards foodborne pathogenic bacteria Bacillus cereus (MIC 0.5 mg/mL, MBC 1.00 mg/mL), whereas other tested bacteria were more resilient towards the activity of the tested extracts (MIC in range of 1.0-4.0 mg/mL and MBC in range of 2.00-8.00 mg/mL). In terms of antifungal potential, the extracts showed rather uniform inhibitory effects towards tested microfungi with MIC value 1.00 mg/mL and MFC 2.00 mg/mL. A more in depth analysis of antimicrobial activity showed that the tested blackthorn extracts have promising antibiofilm activity towards Candida albicans ATCC 10231 as well, with both samples inhibiting formation of biofilm at subinhibitory levels approximately 67.00 %. Observed activity may be attributed to the presence of various phenolic compounds. 
Considering the well-known bitter taste of P. spinosa and demonstrated bioactive properties of its extracts, we believe it would be a great functional ingredient to add to the unique sensory properties of beer and similar beverages. This beer may even be able to provide consumers with additional health benefits, balancing enjoyment with the desire for healthy ingredients.

AB  - In recent years, the manufacturing of functional food has gained a lot of attention. The most recent 
studies indicate that bovine milk proteins are suitable carriers for a whole range of bioactive 
substances, mainly because of their micellar structure.
The aim of our study was to examine the possibility of goat milk proteins (RM - raw skimmed milk 
and CN - casein fraction) to deliver A. blazei extracts (VA - hot water extract and GA - glucan 
extract) in order to use all the potential health benefits of this mushroom. Furthermore, the effect of 
thermal treatment (90⁰C, 10 min; TRM – thermally treated RM and TCN - thermally treated CN) on

compared to that of TRM. TCNs did not follow this trend. The measurement of CNs particle size 
distribution showed the presence of significantly different sizes (coefficient of variation >30%), 
whereas the zeta-potential measurements were stable. These results imply that the measurements of 
zeta-potential cannot be interpreted without the particle size data.

AB  - Athamanta turbith (L.) Brot. is the endemic flowering plant from the Apiaceae family
originated from Đetinja Canyon (Serbia). The aim of this study was to determine the content of
selected plant bioactive compounds present in rhizome, vegetative shoot and inflorescence. Extraction
was performed in 80% methanol as a solvent with two different approaches: powdered
plant material was extracted with solvent for 3 h in ratio 1:10 without (classical solvent extraction,
SE,) and with application of ultrasound (ultrasound-assisted extraction, UAE). Analysis of total
phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and total hydroxycinnamic acid derivative
content (HCA) was performed via spectrophotometric methods. The inflorescence had the highest
TPC in UAE obtained-extract (2.73 ± 0.13 mg GAE/g), as well as the highest TFC (1.56 ± 0.02 mg/g
QE) and HCA (1.45 ± 0.11 mg/g CGAE) in SE-prepared extract where GAE, QE and CGAE are gallic
acid equivalents, quercetin equivalents and chlorogenic acid equivalents respectively. The lowest
amount of TPC, TFC and HCA was detected in the rhizome regardless of extraction methods. Additionally,
antioxidant properties of extracts were determined with five assays: ABTS∙+, DPPH∙,
ferric reducing power (FRP), in vitro phosphomolybdenum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and
cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC). The inflorescence had the highest antioxidant
activity in both quencher assays (at γ = 0.1 g/mL) with 92.1% of inhibition for ABTS∙+ (UAE extract,)
and 77.7% inhibition of DPPH∙ (for both extracts). In addition, it exhibited the highest FRP (18.4
mg/g AAE, SE extract and CUPRAC (~40 mg/g AAE for both extracts) values where AAE stands
for ascorbic acid equivalents. Whereas, the rhizome had the lowest values for all antioxidant assays
concerning both SE and UEA. In conclusion, exhibited antioxidant properties are mostly in line
with the determined content of selected bioactive compounds. Further statistical analysis is applied
to confirm/oppose this.

Phytochemical Profile and Antioxidant Properties of Bee-Collected Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) Pollen

AB  - The current study intended to determine, for the first time, phenolic and fatty acid profile, antioxidant and certain nutritional properties of monofloral bee-collected artichoke (Cynara scolymus) pollen. Based on UHPLC-DAD MS-MS analysis the main phenolics in extractable fraction were different flavonol glycosides (in particular Isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside, 49.2 mg/kg of dry weight) while ferulic acid was the predominant phenolic compound (39.4 mg/kg of dry weight) in the alkaline hydrolyzable fraction. Among fatty acids (FAs), results of GC-FID analysis revealed prevalence of unsaturated FAs with cis-5,8,11,14,17-eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and oleic acid as the main ones- 28.4% and 24.9%, respectively. Based on the FA composition, nutritional analysis proved that artichoke bee-collected pollen had balanced ω-6 and ω-3 FAs content. To determine the antioxidant properties of pollen, five different assays were applied. It was proved that bioactive compounds in artichoke pollen possessed significant ability to quench DPPH radical as well as ABTS radical cation. In addition, in vitro phosphomolybdenum assay confirmed that artichoke pollen is an excellent source of different antioxidants. Pollen extracts exhibited moderate ferric reducing power as well as low ferrous chelating ability. Some further antioxidant studies (preferably in vivo) should be performed to confirm the observed results.

AB  - The aim of this research was phenolics and protein characterization and antioxidant properties evaluation of skimmed thermally treated goat’s milk powder enriched with different concentration of grape pomace seed extract (SE). The dominant phenolics in SE were phenolic acids, flavan–3-ols and procyanidins. Different electrophoretic techniques together with UHPLC-MS/MS analysis revealed the presence of phenolics-protein interactions in the samples, mainly procyanidins with whey protein/caseins complexes. Addition of SE into thermally treated goat’s milk significantly improved antioxidant properties of goat’s milk such as TAC, FRP, DPPH• and ABTS•+ scavenging activity. Gallic acid, catechin, and procyanidins mostly contributed to these activities. The schematic representation of phenolics–casein micelles interactions in thermally treated goat’s milk enriched with SE was given. The addition of SE into thermally treated goat’s milk can be a promising strategy in food waste recovery and to enhance the beneficial health effects of goat’s milk-based functional foods.

Correlation between antioxidant activity and phenolics of Corydalis ochroleuca extracts obtained by different extraction techniques

AB  - Corydalis ochroleuca Koch. (Papaveraceae) called white corydalis is herbaceous
perennial plant, native to rocky woodland areas of south-eastern Europe. It is recognized by narrow,
tubular, fragrant white-yellow flowers. Currently, use of this plant is mainly associated with decorative
purposes, while there is lack of data for other possibilities of its application.
In this research, rhizome and vegetative shoot of C. ochroleuca collected from canyon of the Derventa
river (National park Tara) located in western Serbia, were used to determine antioxidant activity by
ABTS∙+, DPPH∙, in vitro phosphomolybdenum total antioxidant (TAC), cupric reducing antioxidant
capacity (CUPRAC) and ferric reducing power (FRP) assays. For this purpose, samples were washed,
powdered and extracted with 80% methanol by solvent extraction (SE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction
(UAE).
The aim of this study was to evaluate antioxidant activity of C. ochroleuca extracts and to determine
their correlation with previously spectrophotometrically determined phenolic classes (total phenolics
(TPC), total flavonoids (TFC), total hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (HCAs)).
The results of antioxidat assays show that the rhizome extract obtained by UAE show the highest
antioxidant activity by ABTS∙+ (58.66% ± 0.72) and CUPRAC (67.30 ± 0.73 mg/g AAE). In the case of
DPPH∙, TAC and FRP assays, extracts of vegetative shoot obtained by both extraction techniques (SE
and UAE) show higher antioxidant activity then rhizome extracts.
Correlation analysis confirmed a positive correlation between TFC and antioxidant tests - DPPH∙ (r=
0.96; p˂ 0.1) and TAC (r= 0.92; p˂ 0.1), and between HCAs and DPPH∙ (r= 0.91; p˂ 0.1), respectively.
DPPH∙ is a known lipophilic and stable free radical, so this result indicates that the extract of the tested
plant was rich in lipophilic flavonoids and chlorogenic acid derivatives that are able to donate H+ ions
and neutralize the DPPH radical.
Conclusion. Also, there was good correlation between DPPH∙ and TAC (r= 0.99; p˂ 0.1). It is assumed
that the total flavonoids, which show the same activity according to these assays, contributed to this
correlation.
In general, flavonoids apparently contribute to high antioxidant activity of C. ochroleuca which indicate
a complex flavonoid profile. Further research should focus on detailed phenolic characterization and
analysis with their in vivo and in vitro properties.

abstract = "Corydalis ochroleuca Koch. (Papaveraceae) called white corydalis is herbaceous
perennial plant, native to rocky woodland areas of south-eastern Europe. It is recognized by narrow,
tubular, fragrant white-yellow flowers. Currently, use of this plant is mainly associated with decorative
purposes, while there is lack of data for other possibilities of its application.
In this research, rhizome and vegetative shoot of C. ochroleuca collected from canyon of the Derventa
river (National park Tara) located in western Serbia, were used to determine antioxidant activity by
ABTS∙+, DPPH∙, in vitro phosphomolybdenum total antioxidant (TAC), cupric reducing antioxidant
capacity (CUPRAC) and ferric reducing power (FRP) assays. For this purpose, samples were washed,
powdered and extracted with 80% methanol by solvent extraction (SE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction
(UAE).
The aim of this study was to evaluate antioxidant activity of C. ochroleuca extracts and to determine
their correlation with previously spectrophotometrically determined phenolic classes (total phenolics
(TPC), total flavonoids (TFC), total hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (HCAs)).
The results of antioxidat assays show that the rhizome extract obtained by UAE show the highest
antioxidant activity by ABTS∙+ (58.66% ± 0.72) and CUPRAC (67.30 ± 0.73 mg/g AAE). In the case of
DPPH∙, TAC and FRP assays, extracts of vegetative shoot obtained by both extraction techniques (SE
and UAE) show higher antioxidant activity then rhizome extracts.
Correlation analysis confirmed a positive correlation between TFC and antioxidant tests - DPPH∙ (r=
0.96; p˂ 0.1) and TAC (r= 0.92; p˂ 0.1), and between HCAs and DPPH∙ (r= 0.91; p˂ 0.1), respectively.
DPPH∙ is a known lipophilic and stable free radical, so this result indicates that the extract of the tested
plant was rich in lipophilic flavonoids and chlorogenic acid derivatives that are able to donate H+ ions
and neutralize the DPPH radical.
Conclusion. Also, there was good correlation between DPPH∙ and TAC (r= 0.99; p˂ 0.1). It is assumed

AB  - This study deals with the effect of in vitro digestion on the functional potential of traditional Serbian white-brined cheeses. The total antioxidant capacity, reducing power and iron (II) chelating properties as well as angiotensin-converting enyzme-inhibitory (ACE-inhibitory) and antimicrobial activities of traditional Serbian white-brined cheeses before and after in vitro digestion were assayed. The traditional cheeses had different antioxidant properties as well as different ACE-inhibitory activities. In vitro digestion improved the total antioxidant capacity (8.42⁻58.56 times) and the reducing power (by 17.90⁻99.30%) of investigated cheeses, whereas their chelating ability was slightly improved or unaffected after digestion. In vitro digestion reduced the ACE-inhibitory potential of water-soluble protein fractions, and digested water-insoluble fractions were the major source of ACE-inhibitory peptides. The digestates did not exhibit any antibacterial potential, whereas they showed moderate antifungal potential toward selected micromycetes. The best antifungal potential had Svrljig ovine cheese and Homolje cow cheese. The results of this study clearly point to a significant functionality of traditional white-brined cheeses.

AB  - The presence of certain elements in the soil controls their bioavailability to the plant. Uptake
of elements depends on their concentration, solubility of occurring form and soil properties. Also,
the propensity of the plant for the bioaccumulation process will condition the transfer of ions of
elements from the soil to the various parts of the plant. Sometimes good bioaccumulation properties
of plants can be used for their application for bioremediation of polluted areas.
The objective of the present study was to determine the concentrations of selected elements
in the rhizome and above-ground parts of Iris pumila grown in Deliblato Sands (Serbia) in relation
to its surrounding soil. Potassium and selenium contents (mg kg-1of dry matter) were determined
by ICP-OES method after digestion of samples. The concentration, transfer and accumulation of
some elements from the soil to rhizome and above-ground parts were evaluated in terms of Biological
Absorption Coefficient (BAC): cplant part/csoil. The concentration of K+ ions in soil, rhizome,
above-ground vegetative parts and flower were: 1,845.3 mg kg-1, 1,307.0 mg kg-1, 4,461.4 mg kg-1
and 2,875.1 mg kg-1, respectively. The presence of selenium as a trace element was confirmed both
in the soil (0.112 mg kg-1) and in the plant parts (rhizome - 0.156 mg kg-1; above-ground vegetative parts- 0.135 mg kg-1; flower - 0.122 mg kg-1). The obtained results confirmed that the aboveground
parts accumulated potassium (BACvegetative= 2.42; BACflowers= 1.56). Also, all plant parts have
shown the ability to bond selenium from soil in significant quantities (BACrhizomes= 1.38; BACvegetative= 1.20; BACflowers= 1.08). This suggests that this specie have potential in phytoremediation.

AB  - The mineral composition of the plant mainly depends on two factors – the growing soil composition and/or the influence of the environment (especially anthropogenic factor). Availability of metal’s ions in soil for plant root is determined by element form, pH-value, etc. Some plants possessed ability to concentrate (bio accumulate) some macro- or microelements. The aim of this work was to examine ability of diff erent parts of Iris humillis plant (rhizome, above-ground vegetative part and flower) to bound metal ions from surrounding growing soil or environment. Th is process was expressed as Biological
Absorption Coefficient (BAC) which was calculated as cplant part/csoil ratio where cplant part and csoil are concentration of selected element in different parts of plant i.e. in soil. Content of selected elements (potassium, phosphorus and nickel) in soil and plant was determined by ICP-OES method (including
pre-digestion of samples) and expressed as mg/kg of dry matter. Determined concentrations of potassium, phosphorus and nickel in soil were 877.1 mg/kg, 352.2 mg/kg and 2.97 mg/kg respectively. Content of selected elements in different parts of I. humillis was as follow: rhizome (K- 1686.0 mg/kg,
P- 474.2 mg/kg and Ni- 8.5 mg/kg), above-ground vegetative parts (K- 3033.1 mg/kg, P- 423.1 mg/kg and Ni- 0.29 mg/kg) and flower (K- 1461.4 mg/kg, P- 273.0 mg/kg and Ni- 0.12 mg/kg). According to results for BAC potassium was bioaccumulate in all plant parts since value of this factor was higher than 1 (BACrhizome= 1.92, BACabove-ground vegetative parts =3.46, BACflower= 1.67). Also, rhizome and above-ground vegetative part of I. humillis showed ability for bioaccumulation of phosphorus (BACrhizome= 1.35, BACabove-ground vegetative parts =1.20, BACflower= 0.78) while rhizome possessed high ability to concentrate nickel (BACrhizome= 2.86). The obtained results indicated
that this Iris species possessed good ability for Ni-bonding through rhizome. It can be important for potential bioremediation use, since increased nickel concentration in the environment
can be caused by some anthropogenic sources.
