AB - In this study, the concentrations of metals and trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni,
Pb and Zn) were determined in the muscle tissue of adult roach and white bream at two different
sites in the Belgrade section of the Danube. Twenty-six fatty acids, consisting of nine saturated FA
(SFAs), seven monosaturated FA (MUFAs) and ten polysaturated FA (PUFAs), were identified. The
analysis of the concentration of metals and trace elements of the roach and white bream showed
species-specific differences in their bioaccumulation. Four of all elements analyzed (As, Hg, Ni and
Pb) correlated significantly with the changes in FA profiles in fish from both sampling sites, with the
exception of Cu, which correlated with the FA profile at the site before, and Zn, whose concentration
influenced the FA profile at the site after wastewater discharges. The lower PUFA content in the fish
from a site under higher environment pressure could indicate that the fish are stressed. The results
suggest that changes in lipid composition may be one of the protective mechanisms of cells to cope
with anthropogenic stressors.

AB - Tenebrio molitor is considered a pest of stored grains and grain-based products, but also as an important
supplement in animal and human nutrition. It is important to point out that T. molitor larvae are sensitive
to the presence of mycotoxins in the environment, changing the behavior and some biochemical
parameters. Mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEA) was used to assess the effect on the induction of oxidative
stress and behavior in T. molitor larvae. The aim of this research was to examine the effect of high doses
of mycotoxin ZEA (10 and 20 mg/kg) in feed on the activity of the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD),
catalase (CAT), and glutathione S-transferase (GST), as well as on the parameters of locomotor activity:
travel distance, time in movement, and average speed while in motion in T. molitor larvae.
The results of this study showed that the presence of ZEA in feed at concentrations of 10 and 20 mg/kg
significantly increased the specific activity of SOD, CAT, and GST. It also affected the locomotor activity
of the larvae, i.e. travel distance and time in movement were significantly lower in larvae exposed to
10 and 20 mg/kg ZEA, while average speed did not change significantly. The presence of ZEA leads to
significant changes in the physiology and behavior of T. molitor larvae and can be useful in the early
detection of food contamination with this dangerous mycotoxin.

parametre lokomotorne aktivnosti: pređeni put, vreme kretanja i prosečnu brzinu kretanja larvi T. molitor.
značajno povećava specifičnu aktivnost SOD, CAT i GST.
u ranom otkrivanju kontaminacije hrane ovim opasnim mikotoksinom.

AB - The larvae of the yellow mealworm Tenebrio molitor represent a new sustainable source of protein and nutrients for animal and human nutrition. To ensure safe insect-based foods, the risks of mycotoxins and other chemicals must be elucidated. Since oxidative stress is known to underlie many mycotoxin-induced disorders, the present work investigates the effects of the mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEA) on the responses of some oxidative stress biomarkers, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in the whole body of mealworm, as well as the effects on larval survival, body weight, and locomotor activity, and some aspects of mycotoxin accumulation. Larvae were fed artificially contaminated wheat bran containing approximately 0.1 mg/kg, 0.5 mg/kg, 2 mg/kg, and 5 mg/kg ZEA for two weeks. The results of the current study showed that ZEA-contaminated wheat bran at a concentration of 0.5 mg/kg was correlated with increased SOD, CAT, and GST enzyme activities and decreased locomotor activity. Higher concentrations of ZEA, i.e., 2 and 5 mg/kg caused enzymes and locomotor activity to return to control levels. The presence of ZEA in the diet for two weeks did not affect survival but resulted in lower weight gain in T. molitor larvae. The concentration of ZEA in the residual material was 21.1–37.6%, while in the larvae it accounted for 0.38–0.51% of the mycotoxin in the feed. The selected concentrations were in accordance with the EU limits for the presence of ZEA in food and with the levels found in naturally contaminated cereals. Our results suggest that ZEA at the tested concentration induces physiological, biochemical, and behavioral changes in larvae that could potentially serve as early markers of mycotoxin contamination.

AB - Sex-specific physiology includes a set of physiological traits that differ markedly
between males and females of the same species. In addition to the most obvious
differences between the sexes, such as reproductive roles controlled by sex-specific
endocrine systems, it has been demonstrated that the sexes may also differ in their
oxidative physiology. Centipedes, like other animals, possess a suite of antioxidant
enzymes (AOEs) and non-enzymatic antioxidants that delay, prevent, or remove
oxidative damage to target molecules. The aim of the present study was to
investigate sex-specific differences in the antioxidant defence system in three
centipede species from the Balkan Peninsula.
Here, we measured the activity of the following AOEs: superoxide dismutase
(SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase
(GR), and glutathione S-transferase (GST), as well as the concentrations of sulfhydryl
(SH) groups and glutathione (GSH) in males and females of Eupolybothrus
transsylvanicus, Cryptops anomalans, and Clinopodes flavidus. In addition, we
measured lipid peroxidation (LPO) and protein carbonyl (PCO) concentrations in the
species studied to investigate whether sex-specific trends in the activity of AOEs may
lead to the occurrence of oxidative damage.
E. transsylvanicus, C. anomalans and C. flavidus were collected by hand from
under stones and bark on Ada Ciganlija Island (Belgrade, Serbia) in October 2022.
The sexes were distinguished by external characteristics or by dissection of genital
appendages. The biochemical and statistical analyses were performed following our
previous work in the field.
Overall, the most significant differences were found between E. transsylvanicus
and C. anomalans in the following parameters: SOD, CAT, GR, SH groups, LPO, and
PCO; then between C. anomalans and C. flavidus (GSH-Px, GR, SH groups, LPO, and
PCO), whereas the least significant differences were between E. transsylvanicus and
C. flavidus (GSH-Px only). Besides, SOD, GSH-Px and GSH showed significant
differences between males and females of E. transsylvanicus. In C. anomalans, GSHPx and GSH were significantly divided by sex, while in C. flavidus this was true only
for GST. Moreover, all measured AOEs in E. transsylvanicus had higher values in
males, while in the other two species the situation was reversed – the studied
parameters were higher in females.
Thus, the level of antioxidant defences depends on the species and sex of the
centipedes studied. Our results also suggest that females of centipedes that exhibit
parental care, such as C. anomalans and C. flavidus, have better antioxidant status
than males. This provides a starting point for future research on the evolutionary
causes of sex specificity in the oxidative physiology of centipedes.

AB - The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GR),
and glutathione S-transferase (GST), as well as the concentrations of sulfhydryl (SH) groups and glutathione (GSH) were
analyzed in five age classes of the Mediterranean centipede Scolopendra cingulata as follows: embryo, adolescens, maturus
junior, maturus, and maturus senior. The data obtained showed the presence of SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, GR, GST, and SH
groups in embryos. The transition from embryo to adolescens was accompanied by an increase in the activities of all studied
enzymes, in response to the increased production of ROS due to the increased metabolic activity of the centipede associated with growth and development. Our results show that trends in antioxidant enzyme (AOE) activities were not uniform
among adult age classes, suggesting that maturus junior, maturus, and maturus senior differentially respond and/or have
different susceptibility to ROS. On the other hand, GSH concentration in embryos was undetectable, highest in adolescens
and decreased in the latter part of life. Pearson correlation analysis in embryos showed that the activities of the AOEs were
strongly and positively correlated with each other but negatively correlated with GSH and SH groups. At later age classes,
SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, GR, GSH, and SH groups were no longer significantly correlated with GST. In the discriminant analysis,
the variables that separated the age classes were GR, GST, SH groups, and body length. Body length was directly related to
the age of individuals, clearly indicating that development/aging affects the regulation of antioxidant defense in this species.

AB - Pollution of freshwater ecosystems by discharges of untreated municipal wastewater represents a
major threat for aquatic organisms and thus human health. Serbia discharges wastewater without
previous treatment. In recent years, studies have shown that fatty acids are sensitive to alterations in
organism homeostasis, supporting their use for biomarkers of toxicant exposure. Fish species are an
important source of biologically valuable proteins, fats, fat-soluble vitamins, and n-3polyunsaturated
fatty acids. The purpose of this study was to investigate the diferences of fatty acid composition in
fish from urban sites of the Danube River. A total number of eight specimens of roach (Rutilus rutilus)
were collected from two localities - Višnjica, which is exposed to the discharge of the largest
wastewater collector in the city of Belgrade and Veliko Ratno Ostrvo, which is at the confluence of
Danube and Sava River, and is considered as control location. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were
analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 28 fatty acids were found
in the muscle tissue of the studied fish species. The results showed no significant differences in fatty
acid profile between polluted and control localities. All examined fish species contained essential
fatty acids (EPA, ALA, DHA) with DHA levels significantly higher in specimens from control site. The
proportion of total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) was almost
the same while polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were higher in control specimens. It is shown by
previous studies that the main reason of changes in PUFAs is that they could be oxidized under
oxidative stress conditions induced by metals or organic compounds. Even though anthropogenic
load exerted on Višnjica locality has not significantly affected the fish fatty acid profile, changes in
PUFAs indicated the presence of some xenobiotics in their environment.

AB - A 102-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of four different fish feeding patterns on carp pond water quality and antioxidant biomarkers [superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Glutathione reductase (GR), Glutathione S-transferase (GST) and Thiol groups (SH)], protein content and biomass of the midge Chironomus plumosus. Farmed fish were fed two commercial diets: Soprofish 25/7 Standard (containing 25% protein and 7 % fat) and Soprofish 32/7 Profi Effect (containing 32 % protein and 7 % fat). These feeds were combined during a feeding trial in four different feeding patterns, designated as A, B, C and D. In feeding pattern A, the fish received Soprofish 25/7 Standard throughout the experiment and in feeding pattern D, Soprofish 32/7 Profi Effect. During feeding patterns B and C, a mixed feeding pattern was used, alternating between lower and higher protein diets. The study revealed no significant effects (P > 0.05) of the feeding regimens on water quality, so their effects on C. plumosus larvae can be evaluated independently. The activities of the chironomid enzymes CAT and GR showed a clear statistically significant dependence on the feeding pattern (P < 0.05), which increased with increasing protein content. On the other hand, the activity of SOD as well as larval biomass were noticeably affected by water quality, the former increasing with its deterioration and the latter with its improvement. The activities of GPx and GST were correlated with each other, but no statistically significant relationship was found with any of the measured abiotic factors (P > 0.05). Overall, our results suggest that long-term supplementation with a highly concentrated protein diet may have preventive effects against oxidative stress and support the use of C. plumosus as a model for assessing the effects of organic pollution on pond zoobenthic fauna.

U ovoj studiji ispitivali smo promene u antioksidativnoj odbrani tokom razvića mediteranske vrste stonoge Scolopendra cingulata (Chilopoda).

AB - Food and feeding habits of white bream (Blicca bjoerkna) and common roach (Rutilus rutilus)
specimens sampled from the Belgrade section of the Danube River in April 2021 were investigated.
Stomach contents of 20 individuals of both cyprinid fish species were analyzed and no individual had
an empty stomach. There was a small difference in the stomach contents of these two analyzed fish.
The food items in stomach showed a wide spectrum, ranging from crustacean, molluscs to aquatic
insects. Therefore, analyzed fish species displayed an omnivorous feeding. Based on the obtained
data, the indices of frequency, abundance and significance for each of the identified prey categories
were calculated. Trichoptera (aquatic insects) and Gammaridae (Crustacea) were found to be the
most common and abundant prey utilized by all analyzed species. The attained results, since these are
relatively small samples collected during one monthly outing (April), can be considered preliminary
and require further research.

most common and abundant prey utilized by all analyzed species. The attained results, since these are
relatively small samples collected during one monthly outing (April), can be considered preliminary
and require further research.",

AB - The present study aimed to assess the lipid peroxidation (LPO) level under the different environmental
conditions on the common roach (Rutilus rutilus). Lipid peroxides were measured in fish collected
within the Danube River at two points: Veliko Ratno ostrvo (P1), which was considered a reference
point, and Višnjica (P2), the point with compromised water quality. A significant difference is
revealed between the points suggesting signs of stress in fish from the Višnjica point. Concerning that
Višnjica experiences intense environmental pressure, we noticed an increased concentration of lipid
peroxides in the fish liver, compared to those individuals from the P1 (p < 0.05). A significantly
increased level of LPO in fish from P2 can be the indication of the presence of pro-oxidant stressors
that through oxidative stress lead to oxidation of cell lipids in fish. These results give a good base for
R. rutilus to be a bioindicator of a disturbed environment.

AB - Discharges of wastewater, enriched with inorganic and organic chemicals, may induce
pollution of the aquatic environment and thus affect biological communities. The main
problem considering pollution of the Danube River in Belgrade represents the
discharges of wastewaters without any previous treatment. This study aims to assess
the distribution of pollutants (metals and trace elements, PCBs and pesticides) in the
tissues of two commercial fish species (common bream and pike-perch) belonging to
the different trophic levels. The metal and trace element concentrations were assessed
by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) while organochlorine
pesticides (PCBs and pesticides) were assessed by gas chromatography with electron
capture detectors (GC-ECD). Detected As, Cd, Pb and Hg concentrations in the fish
muscle were below the maximum allowed concentrations (MAC) established by both
the EU and the Republic of Serbia. Gills significantly differ in the concentrations of
the most assessed metals and trace elements while liver differs among species in
concentrations of As, Cd, Hg and Zn. Detected ndl PCB and pesticides concentrations
in both analyzed species were below MAC established by both the EU and the
Republic of Serbia. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in ndl PCB
and pesticides concentrations among analyzed species. In this study it was shown that
high position in the food chain doesn’t indicate higher tissue contamination, even
though arsenic, cadmium, mercury and iron were in higher concentrations in liver and
gills of pike-perch.

Свако ткиво поседује различити капацитет акумулације метала.3 Истраживање указује да шкрге, директно изложене загађењу, имају добар потенцијал као биоиндикатори квалитета средине из које су анализирани., U beogradskom regionu, Dunav se razmatra kao ekosistem izložen konstantno visokom antropogenom zagađenju koje je rezultat priliva slabo tretiranih komunalnih i industrijskih otpadnih voda, regulacije rečnog toka, intenziviranja rečnog saobraćaja.1 Metali su usled svoje perzistentnosti, toksičnosti i potencijala za akumulaciju jedni od ključnih zagađivača akvatičnih ekosistema. AB - Microplastic (MP) pollution has attracted wide attention since the production and use of plastic materials has increased worldwide. However, there is a lack of information about MPs in freshwater ecosystems, given that they are less studied compared to marine ones. Fish species are of special interest since they are utilized in the human diet. Among various sources, synthetic textiles play a dominant role in microplastic emissions, especially in the form of short fibers. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of MPs in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of the freshwater fish species common bream (Abramis brama Linnaeus, 1758) from the Danube River (1169 river km) in the area of the city of Belgrade, Serbia (44° 49′ 54.48″ N, 20° 27′ 23.68″ E). A total of nine specimens were collected, and the whole GIT was removed. Digestion of organic content was performed with a combined alkaline-oxidative treatment (10% KOH and Triton X-100; 30% H2O2). Filtered samples were visually observed under a binocular microscope. A total number of 136 plastic particles were detected, all belonging to a class of fibers. The size of the particles varied from 0.5 mm to 50 mm. The obtained results are in accordance with previous studies that reported fibers as the dominant shape of MPs in fish. The given results represent a contribution to the research of the MPs' occurrence in freshwater species. However, there is a need for further studies involving other fish species.

Beograda, Srbija (44° 49ʹ 54.48ʺ N, 20° 27ʹ 23.68ʺ E). Ukupno je prikupljeno devet uzoraka, a
izvađen je cijeli GIT. Digestija organskog sadržaja provedena je kombiniranim alkalno-
oksidativnim tretmanom (10% KOH i Triton X-100; 30% H2O2). Filtrirani uzorci vizualno su
promatrani pod binokularnim mikroskopom. Otkriveno je ukupno 136 plastičnih čestica, koje sve
pripadaju klasi vlakana.
Navedeni rezultati predstavljaju doprinos istraživanju prisutnosti MPs u slatkovodnim vrstama.

AB - The recent trend for rainbow trout diets to be higher in lipid content may increase the lipid concentration in fish and lipid peroxidation, which could lead to oxidative stress and affect fish health. In the present work, an evaluation of the possible effects of different fish diets on antioxidant enzyme levels was carried out on two aquaculture groups of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The fish from one group were fed a diet containing 5% more crude lipids, than the diet used for the other group. The objective was to determine the effects of different concentrations of dietary lipid on the antioxidant defense enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in the liver and muscle of rainbow trout. All enzymes showed an increasing trend in fish fed with a diet containing more lipids. GST was observed to be the most sensitive antioxidant enzyme, followed by SOD and GPx, and finally by CAT and GR. These results provided data indicating the prooxidative effects of higher dietary lipid levels and suggested that dietary lipid plays an important role in determining fish susceptibility to oxidative stress.

AB - The traffic pressure is increasing, resulting in the emission of atmospheric pollution. Soil organisms will need to respond to pollution stressors. Among them, land snails are valuable indicators of ecosystem disturbance. In this study, land snails Helix pomatia were sampled from three city localities with different traffic intensity. Oxidative stress biomarkers catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in the foot muscle (FM) and hepatopancreas (HP) tissue were determined. Also, five heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations were quantified in soil and tissue samples. According to the results, the highway induces the strongest contamination on the surrounding environment, with the highest metal concentrations measured in soil and snails. At the most polluted locality, only Cd exceeded some soil guidelines authorities that we referred to in this study. In addition, tissue Cd concentrations exceeded the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) value (1 mg kg-1) for soil invertebrate toxicity at all localities making it likely responsible for generating adverse effects in snails. Regarding HP, the CAT and GST are the most sensitive parameters that could be useful as oxidative stress biomarkers in snails exposed to the actual metals in the environment. On the other hand, in FM tissue, the most pronounced changes were recorded for GPX and GR. Based on tissue-specific enzyme responses, three urban populations were clearly separated. Therefore land snails are the promising candidates for quick field-based biomarker studies after showing a tissue-specific concentration-dependent induction of certain enzymes to heavy metals.

AB - This study investigates the activity of snail glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and metal
bioaccumulation for assessing ecotoxicological effects of urban metal pollution in Belgrade city,
Serbia. This investigation was performed in the viscera of roadside Cepaea vindobonensis snails
collected from two different sites in the city. The results showed that mean concentrations of the
measured metals, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were higher in site next to the major federal highway
(HS) when compared to the background levels of the reference site (RS) 1.5 km away from the
highway. The pattern of metal accumulation at both sites was Pb > Cd. At the HS site, snails displayed
higher mean of GST activity compared to snails from the RS. The activity of GST enzyme was
positively related to metal concentrations. The tested antioxidant enzyme is sensitive parameter that
could be used as biomarker in snails exposed to the actual metals in the environment. The overall
results of this study showed the importance of C. vindobonensis as a sentinel organism for

abstract = "This study investigates the activity of snail glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and metal
bioaccumulation for assessing ecotoxicological effects of urban metal pollution in Belgrade city,
The overall
results of this study showed the importance of C. vindobonensis as a sentinel organism for
biomonitoring the biologic impact of atmospheric pollution in urban areas.",

AB - Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the most prevalent type B trichothecene mycotoxins present in cereals such as: wheat, rye, barley, oats and corn. It initiates a wide range of toxic effects on human and animal health. As an edible insect species for the growing human population, Tenebrio molitor is typically fed on cereal bran or flour. In the present study T. molitor L. larvae were grown for two weeks on wheat bran artificially contaminated with DON at four concentrations: 4.9 μg/g, 8 μg/g, 16 μg/g and 25 μg/g. The effects of DON intake on survival, growth, activity of the antioxidant enzymes - superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and the phase II biotransformation enzyme - glutathione-S-transferase (GST), protein content and locomotor activity were monitored in two-month-old T. molitor larvae. The study revealed that DON at concentrations ranging from 4.9 to 25 μg/g wheat bran reduced larval body weight and protein content. Furthermore, it increased SOD and GST activity, had no effect on CAT activity. Also, this study showed that presence of DON in these concentrations has no direct detrimental effects on larval survival, but reduced locomotor activity. The observed effects were particularly pronounced in the larvae given the highest DON concentration 25 μg/g. These finding reveals that DON in artificially contaminated wheat bran at concentrations up to 25 μg/g is able to induce dose-dependent physiological and behavioral changes in T. molitor larvae.

AB - The current study reports a combined seasonal monitoring of the Crnica River watercourse using physico-chemical parameters and biomarkers measured in Gammarus dulensis with the aim of correlating the effects of pollution with the level of oxidative stress biomarkers in this amphipod. The pollution source is identified as a trout farm in the upper part of the Crnica River (Eastern Serbia). Physico-chemical water parameters and sediment trace element concentrations were measured in the Crnica River during three seasons. Three localities downstream [CR2, CR3, and CR4 (20 m, 400 m, and 1.3 km from the trout farm discharge, respectively)] were assessed in comparison with a reference location (CR1), 250 m upstream from the trout aquaculture in the Crnica River. Antioxidant biomarkers including the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were determined in pooled samples of G. dulensis. Our findings showed statistically different antioxidant enzyme levels in gammarids from the first downstream locality (CR2) compared to those from other three localities. The results indicate that oxidative stress occurred to some extent despite the assumed antioxidant induction as a result of exposure to elevated levels of some elements and changed water parameters, the effects seeming in part to be mediated by suppression of SOD and CAT (during summer and autumn); and by suppression of GPX and GR (during autumn) at the CR2 locality. The activity of GST in all seasons was higher at the CR2 locality than at the other localities, suggesting the presence of some permanent xenobiotic next to the aquaculture output. Seasonal difference in the physical and chemical water parameters and sediment trace element concentrations were observed. Overall, our results indicate a locality- and season-dependent antioxidant enzymes response in G. dulensis, pointing at progressively reduced deleterious effect of trout farm outputs with movement further downstream.

AB - The concentration of 10 metallic trace elements or MTE (Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn, As, Hg, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cr) was measured in specimens of the troglophilic millipede Apfelbeckia insculpta (L. Koch, 1867) and sediment of the cave Hadži-Prodanova Pećina in western Serbia. Some MTE, like Fe and Mn, displayed much higher concentrations compared to other elements, both in the sediment and in the body of A. insculpta. On the other hand, estimation of the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) in both males and females of A. insculpta showed values greater than 1 for xenobiotic elements compared to those that are essential. In addition to chemical analyses, we examined the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPX, and GR) and the phase II biotransformation enzyme GST, as well as the content of –SH groups, in the body of A. insculpta. Activities of two (GR and GST) out of the five tested enzymes showed significant differences between the sexes. These results represent the first comprehensive report of antioxidant enzymes in myriapods. The noted differences in the investigated MTE and enzyme activities between the sexes of A. insculpta most likely reflect different metabolic activities and responses to environmental conditions in males and females.

AB - Aging is accompanied by increased production of free oxygen radicals and impairment of normal cellular functions. The aim of this work was to provide preliminary data on age-related differences in the activities of antioxidant enzymes and phase II biotransformation enzyme glutathione S-transferase (GST) in a wild population of the Asian clam Corbicula fluminea. The antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR), and GST were assessed in visceral mass of four age classes (0+-, 1+-, 2+-, and 3+-year-old) of C. fluminea clams. Age-related changes were seen in antioxidant enzyme status: levels of total SOD (totSOD) (P < 0.05), MnSOD, and CuZnSOD (P < 0.05) activities increased progressively during aging from younger to older clams. Changes in CAT and GR activities with advancing age were found, the levels being the highest in age class II, then being lower in age classes III and IV (P < 0.05). Activities of GPX and GST were lower in the senescent individuals (2+- and 3+-year-old clams) compared with young individuals (0+- and 1+-year-old clams). Overall, the decline of glutathione-dependent enzyme activities, coupled with higher and lower activities of totSOD and CAT, respectively, as the individual grows older, may render the older animals more susceptible to oxidative stress. Data reported here are not intended to be exhaustive since they concern only age/size structure of the population at one locality, so more detailed studies on both the developmental stages and levels of antioxidant enzymes of this new alien species in Serbian rivers are required.

AB - PCBs are potential genotoxicants and inductors of increased levels of
ROS and oxidative stress in both humans and wildlife. In this study,
biotransformation parameters and antioxidant (AO) enzymes were analyzed
in the Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea, with respect to the presence of
dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs) in the environment. For this purpose, clams
were collected from three localities with different environmental
conditions. Sediments from each locality and clam tissues were analyzed
for the presence of dl-PCBs. Biological responses included changes in
the expression of fish CYP1A immunoreactive protein, changes in the
activities of AO enzymes, SOD, CAT, GR and GPx, and the phase II
biotransformation enzyme GST. Clams from the locality with the highest
EWHO TEQ values for sediment dl-PCBs had the highest EWHO TEQ values for
tissue dl-PCBs and the highest level of fish CYP1A immunoreactive
protein expression. The correlations found between the concentrations of
dl-PCBs and AO and GST activities revealed both concentration-dependent
inhibitory and stimulatory effects. The activities of GPx, GR and GST
were very sensitive to environmental xenobiotics, including dl-PCBs. The
obtained results indicate that the activities of these enzymes were
fine-tuned to provide optimized antioxidant responses. We also observed
seasonal changes in GST and AO enzyme activities in Asian clam. The
highest levels of activity were observed in spring as compared to summer
or autumn. CDA, which was performed in order to classify the different
clam populations, revealed a coordinated rearrangement of the clams'
metabolic components that were probably aimed at compensating for
environmental fluctuations. The presented data reveal the sensitivity of
   C. fiuminea to the presence of dl-PCBs in the environment and support
the use of this clam as a sentinel species for biomonitoring studies.

were collected from three localities with different environmental
