AB - The aim of the study was to test the significance of the EPT index in the water quality assessment of three types of water bodies in hilly and mountainous region of Serbia. The aquatic macroinver-tebrate community was dominated by the group of insects, of which 95 taxa represent the EPT group. We compared the obtained values of biological indices used for the assessment of water quality according to the national legislation with the overall status assessment represented by the ecological quality classes (EQC). The results of the Spearman correlation test showed a negative correlation of EQC with the EPT index, BMWP score, H', total number of taxa and number of sen-sitive taxa, while a positive correlation was observed for the values of SI and Tubificinae %. The values of EQC and biological indices were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that the parameters that contributed most to the differences were the EPT index, the BMWP score and the number of sensitive taxa. The results indicate that the EPT index is an excellent indicator of changes in water quality and an important tool for the ecological categoriza-tion of water bodies in mountain regions.

AB - In this study, the concentrations of metals and trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni,
Pb and Zn) were determined in the muscle tissue of adult roach and white bream at two different
sites in the Belgrade section of the Danube. Twenty-six fatty acids, consisting of nine saturated FA
(SFAs), seven monosaturated FA (MUFAs) and ten polysaturated FA (PUFAs), were identified. The
analysis of the concentration of metals and trace elements of the roach and white bream showed
species-specific differences in their bioaccumulation. Four of all elements analyzed (As, Hg, Ni and
Pb) correlated significantly with the changes in FA profiles in fish from both sampling sites, with the
exception of Cu, which correlated with the FA profile at the site before, and Zn, whose concentration
influenced the FA profile at the site after wastewater discharges. The lower PUFA content in the fish
from a site under higher environment pressure could indicate that the fish are stressed. The results
suggest that changes in lipid composition may be one of the protective mechanisms of cells to cope
with anthropogenic stressors.

AB - The aim of the present study was to determine the current status of the fish community structure and
composition in the Ribnica River. The Ribnica River, a tributary of the Kolubara River, is classified as
a Type 3 watercourse according to the current national regulations. A total of 347 fish specimens
were collected and analysed, and seven fish species were identified. Over 60% of the fish community
consists of the species Barbus balcanicus and Alburnoides bipunctatus, and the community has high
diversity and Evenness. The conservation status of the present fish species was also reviewed, and
three identified fish species are protected by national and international regulations. The occurrence of
Sabanejewia balcanica is very interesting. This fish species is strictly protected by national legislation
as well as by the Bern Convention (Annex III) and the Habitats Directive (Annex II). With the
presented study results we would like to point out the importance and conservation of these types of
watercourses. As a result of anthropogenic pressures, potential impacts in the form of habitat
alteration and degradation are expected, which may lead to threats to local fish populations.

pollution. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were measured
in the gills of the fish. A statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was found in the
activity of both enzymes in fish from site VIS compared to site VRO. These results indicate
signs of stress in fish from the area with intense anthropogenic activities.

AB - The Medjuvršje reservoir is a highly modified water body on the Zapadna Morava River by the construction of a hydroelectric power plant. According to the national regulation it belongs to type 2 watercourses, i.e. large rivers with mineral substrates of medium grain size. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of the Medjuvršje reservoir using bioindicative properties of benthic macroinvertebrates, taking into consideration their community composition. Macrozoobenthos were collected from two sites in the littoral zone of the reservoir using a standard hand net following the standard methodology (EN 27828). Specimens were sorted and identified under a stereo microscope using the appropriate identification keys. Assessment of the reservoir’s ecological potential was carried out based on the class boundaries for Type 2 rivers using several biotic parameters calculated from AQEM (2002). The representatives of Oligochaeta, Mollusca, Odonata and Chironomidae were most abundant in the benthic community. The larval stages of the insects Ephemeroptera, Heteroptera, Coleoptera and Trichoptera were recorded only from the microhabitats with abundant macrophyte vegetation. Within this study, we also recorded the first finding of a freshwater sponge for this type of water body. Based on the macrozoobenthos composition and according to analyzed indices (saprobic index Zelinka & Marvan, BMWP and ASPT score, Diversity index Shannon-Weaner, Total number of taxa, share of Oligochaeta-Tubificidae) the ecological potential was assessed as good (II class of Water quality). However, when the EPT index was considered, the status deteriorated to IV (site 1) or V class (site 2) as poor or bad status.

AB - The development of nonlethal methods for the monitoring of environmental contamination is essential to minimize the negative effects on studied species and communities. Fish scales and fin clips can be used as nonlethal indicators of water quality given that they are in direct contact with the environment and can accumulate high concentrations of metals and trace elements. Fin clipping causes minimal harm to fish and it does not affect fish growth or survival. In this study, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn concentrations were measured by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in scales, fins, and muscle of common bream ( Abramis brama ), white bream ( Blicca bjoerkna ), wels catfish ( Silurus glanis ), northern pike ( Esox lucius ), and pikeperch ( Sander lucioperca ) from the Danube River. The analysis showed a positive correlation for Hg between scales and muscle in pikeperch. Anal fin and muscle were positively correlated in white bream for Hg, in wels catfish for Cu, and in northern pike and pikeperch for As. The results suggest that scales and fins have a potential to be used as indicators of muscle tissue contamination with As, Cu, and Hg, depending on species' ecological traits.

abstract = "The development of nonlethal methods for the monitoring of environmental contamination is essential to minimize the negative effects on studied species and communities. The results suggest that scales and fins have a potential to be used as indicators of muscle tissue contamination with As, Cu, and Hg, depending on species' ecological traits.",

AB - Pollution of freshwater ecosystems by discharges of untreated municipal wastewater represents a
major threat for aquatic organisms and thus human health. Serbia discharges wastewater without
previous treatment. In recent years, studies have shown that fatty acids are sensitive to alterations in
organism homeostasis, supporting their use for biomarkers of toxicant exposure. Fish species are an
important source of biologically valuable proteins, fats, fat-soluble vitamins, and n-3polyunsaturated
fatty acids. The purpose of this study was to investigate the diferences of fatty acid composition in
fish from urban sites of the Danube River. A total number of eight specimens of roach (Rutilus rutilus)
were collected from two localities - Višnjica, which is exposed to the discharge of the largest
wastewater collector in the city of Belgrade and Veliko Ratno Ostrvo, which is at the confluence of
Danube and Sava River, and is considered as control location. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were
analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 28 fatty acids were found
in the muscle tissue of the studied fish species. The results showed no significant differences in fatty
acid profile between polluted and control localities. All examined fish species contained essential
fatty acids (EPA, ALA, DHA) with DHA levels significantly higher in specimens from control site. The
proportion of total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) was almost
the same while polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were higher in control specimens. It is shown by
previous studies that the main reason of changes in PUFAs is that they could be oxidized under
oxidative stress conditions induced by metals or organic compounds. Even though anthropogenic
load exerted on Višnjica locality has not significantly affected the fish fatty acid profile, changes in
PUFAs indicated the presence of some xenobiotics in their environment.

AB - The Balkan Peninsula is a center of Europe’s biodiversity in respect to freshwater gastropods and many of recorded taxa are stenobionts of narrow distribution. This manuscript presents review of the freshwater gastropod fauna distribution in springs and small mountain streams of the Western Balkan and points to the main threats that influence the decline of diversity of this important group of aquatic organisms. The most significant threats to the diversity of freshwater gastropods in small streams and springs are habitat degradation (physical destruction of habitats due to mini hydropower plants construction, hydro-technical works related to flood protection, faulty forest management excavation of material), and water abstraction. Knowledge of a considerable number of Balkan gastropod species, underlines the importance for the long-term conservation of biodiversity in this part of Europe.

AB - Food and feeding habits of white bream (Blicca bjoerkna) and common roach (Rutilus rutilus)
specimens sampled from the Belgrade section of the Danube River in April 2021 were investigated.
Stomach contents of 20 individuals of both cyprinid fish species were analyzed and no individual had
an empty stomach. There was a small difference in the stomach contents of these two analyzed fish.
The food items in stomach showed a wide spectrum, ranging from crustacean, molluscs to aquatic
insects. Therefore, analyzed fish species displayed an omnivorous feeding. Based on the obtained
data, the indices of frequency, abundance and significance for each of the identified prey categories
were calculated. Trichoptera (aquatic insects) and Gammaridae (Crustacea) were found to be the
most common and abundant prey utilized by all analyzed species. The attained results, since these are
relatively small samples collected during one monthly outing (April), can be considered preliminary
and require further research.

AB - The present study aimed to assess the lipid peroxidation (LPO) level under the different environmental
conditions on the common roach (Rutilus rutilus). Lipid peroxides were measured in fish collected
within the Danube River at two points: Veliko Ratno ostrvo (P1), which was considered a reference
point, and Višnjica (P2), the point with compromised water quality. A significant difference is
revealed between the points suggesting signs of stress in fish from the Višnjica point. Concerning that
Višnjica experiences intense environmental pressure, we noticed an increased concentration of lipid
peroxides in the fish liver, compared to those individuals from the P1 (p < 0.05). A significantly
increased level of LPO in fish from P2 can be the indication of the presence of pro-oxidant stressors
that through oxidative stress lead to oxidation of cell lipids in fish. These results give a good base for
R. rutilus to be a bioindicator of a disturbed environment.

AB - Discharges of wastewater, enriched with inorganic and organic chemicals, may induce
pollution of the aquatic environment and thus affect biological communities. The main
problem considering pollution of the Danube River in Belgrade represents the
discharges of wastewaters without any previous treatment. This study aims to assess
the distribution of pollutants (metals and trace elements, PCBs and pesticides) in the
tissues of two commercial fish species (common bream and pike-perch) belonging to
the different trophic levels. The metal and trace element concentrations were assessed
by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) while organochlorine
pesticides (PCBs and pesticides) were assessed by gas chromatography with electron
capture detectors (GC-ECD). Detected As, Cd, Pb and Hg concentrations in the fish
muscle were below the maximum allowed concentrations (MAC) established by both
the EU and the Republic of Serbia. Gills significantly differ in the concentrations of
the most assessed metals and trace elements while liver differs among species in
concentrations of As, Cd, Hg and Zn. Detected ndl PCB and pesticides concentrations
in both analyzed species were below MAC established by both the EU and the
Republic of Serbia. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in ndl PCB
and pesticides concentrations among analyzed species. In this study it was shown that
high position in the food chain doesn’t indicate higher tissue contamination, even
though arsenic, cadmium, mercury and iron were in higher concentrations in liver and
gills of pike-perch.

abstract = "Discharges of wastewater, enriched with inorganic and organic chemicals, may induce
pollution of the aquatic environment and thus affect biological communities. The main
problem considering pollution of the Danube River in Belgrade represents the
discharges of wastewaters without any previous treatment.
In this study it was shown that
high position in the food chain doesn’t indicate higher tissue contamination, even
though arsenic, cadmium, mercury and iron were in higher concentrations in liver and
gills of pike-perch.",

AB - Microplastic (MP) pollution has attracted wide attention since the production and use of plastic materials has increased worldwide. However, there is a lack of information about MPs in freshwater ecosystems, given that they are less studied compared to marine ones. Fish species are of special interest since they are utilized in the human diet. Among various sources, synthetic textiles play a dominant role in microplastic emissions, especially in the form of short fibers. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of MPs in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of the freshwater fish species common bream (Abramis brama Linnaeus, 1758) from the Danube River (1169 river km) in the area of the city of Belgrade, Serbia (44° 49′ 54.48″ N, 20° 27′ 23.68″ E). A total of nine specimens were collected, and the whole GIT was removed. Digestion of organic content was performed with a combined alkaline-oxidative treatment (10% KOH and Triton X-100; 30% H2O2). Filtered samples were visually observed under a binocular microscope. A total number of 136 plastic particles were detected, all belonging to a class of fibers. The size of the particles varied from 0.5 mm to 50 mm. The obtained results are in accordance with previous studies that reported fibers as the dominant shape of MPs in fish. The given results represent a contribution to the research of the MPs' occurrence in freshwater species. However, there is a need for further studies involving other fish species.

plastičnih materijala porasla diljem svijeta. Međutim, nedostaju podaci o MP u slatkovodnim
Beograda, Srbija (44° 49ʹ 54.48ʺ N, 20° 27ʹ 23.68ʺ E). Ukupno je prikupljeno devet uzoraka, a
izvađen je cijeli GIT. Digestija organskog sadržaja provedena je kombiniranim alkalno-
oksidativnim tretmanom (10% KOH i Triton X-100; 30% H2O2). Filtrirani uzorci vizualno su
promatrani pod binokularnim mikroskopom. Otkriveno je ukupno 136 plastičnih čestica, koje sve
pripadaju klasi vlakana.
Navedeni rezultati predstavljaju doprinos istraživanju prisutnosti MPs u slatkovodnim vrstama.

abstract = "Microplastic (MP) pollution has attracted wide attention since the production and use of plastic materials has increased worldwide. However, there is a need for further studies involving other fish species., Zagađenje mikroplastikom (MP) privuklo je široku pozornost budući da je proizvodnja i upotreba

AB - During the monitoring of surface water quality of the city of Belgrade, four individuals of B. moogi were collected in the PKB canal. Checklists of leeches of Serbia mention no records of this leech. Grosser et al. (2015) suspect its presence since it was recorded in nearby regions (Hungary, Austria, and the Danube River). This record is an important contribution to the knowledge on the biology of B. moogi and also to the knowledge of the fauna of leeches of both Serbia and the region.

AB - Vrsta Dina lineata (Müller, 1774) naseljava slatkovodne ekosisteme zapadnog Palearktika, od
Velike Britanije do Irana.
AB - The species Dina lineata (Müller, 1774) inhabits freshwater habitats of western Palearctic
from Great Britain to Iran. Predaceous leeches from the suborder Erpobdelliformes show a
degree of morphological variability which leads to description of several subspecies. Boris
Sket described three subspecies of D. lineata on the Balkan Peninsula (D. l. dinarica, D. l.
lacustris, D. l. montana) and suspected presence of nominotypical subspecies D. lineata
lineata, which was confirmed by recent studies. On the Balkan Peninsula, predominantly on
the Dinaric Alps, several new species in the genus Dina were recently described (D.
minuoculata, D. prokletiaka, D. sketi). These species show preference to same habitats as
Balkan subspecies of D. lineata and relatively small morphological differences.
Phylogenetical relations between subspecies of D. lineata are not clear. Contemporary
molecular- genetic analyses enable clarification of these relations. The aim of this study is to
determine the phylogenetic and phylogeographic relations between subspecies of D. lineata
as well as their relations with other species in the genus Dina. The study incorporates large
area from the Sava River in the northwest to Macedonia in the southeast. Three subspecies of
D. lineata were recorded during the field work. D. l. dinarica was the most frequent, D. l.
lineata was recorded on few localities in Serbia and D. l. montana was collected on the
Komovi mountain (Montenegro). Analyses of phylogenetic relations were conducted on the
sequences of mitochondrial DNA that code for cytochrome oxydase I (COI). The results show
that D. l. dinarica could be treated as separate species D. dinarica. This taxon shows
significant phylogeographical variability. Analyses have shown grouping of haplotypes based
on geographical origin of populations. Haplotypes from Serbia were grouped in one group,
those from Bosnia and Herzegovina in to second and third group was comprised of haplotypes
from Montenegro. Great genetic variability may indicate potential hidden speciation within D.
dinarica species.

AB - The Danube River basin represents a hotspot for the European freshwater diversity. The Danube in Serbia is characterized by a significant level of fish diversity, as well as by economically important fish resources. However, the Danube fish fauna is facing a number of adverse anthropogenic impacts, such as unsustainable fishery, habitat loss and fragmentation, water pollution and non-native species invasions. In this chapter, the major adverse impacts on the Danube fish communities in Serbia are presented, and the critical management measures are discussed, such as those related to supportive stocking and other conservation efforts. In order to ensure adequate protection and sustainable management of fish resources in the Danube in Serbia, it will be critical to introduce effective monitoring system, to establish and enforce adequate management measures, and to intensify research efforts on critical issues related to fish management and conservation.

abstract = "The Danube River basin represents a hotspot for the European freshwater diversity. In order to ensure adequate protection and sustainable management of fish resources in the Danube in Serbia, it will be critical to introduce effective monitoring system, to establish and enforce adequate management measures, and to intensify research efforts on critical issues related to fish management and conservation.",

AB - Aquatic ecosystems are today globally endangered;thus, in order to ensure sustainable water resources management, it is necessary to establish continuous monitoring of their quality. Considering that fish are situated at the top of the food chain and used for human nutrition, it makes them important for the assessment of contamination of aquatic ecosystems with toxic substances. In scope of this dissertation, the estimation of the distribution of different pollutants was carried out at three localities on the Danube: Batajnica, Veliko Ratno Ostrvo, and Grocka, in the period from November 2012 to March 2014. Based on the analysis of abundance and mass fraction of individual species in the total catch, as well as their biological and ecological characteristics, the optimal indicator species for this study were determined, and accordingly the following species were used northern pike, freshwater bream, white bream, wels catfish, and pike-perch. The distribution of 11 elements wasassessed in the wels catfish tissue samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS), as well as their concentrations in different segments of muscles, gills, liver, and intestine, in order to determine the potential for the use of these tissues in monitoring fish populations. The potential relationship of metal and trace element concentrations in the muscle and their concentrations in scales and anal fins was assessed in northern pike, freshwater bream, white bream, wels catfish and pike-perch in order to develop non-invasive methods for monitoring the quality of fish meat. Using the gas chromatography with electron capture detector(GC-ECD), concentrations of organochlorine pollutants (polychlorinated biphenyls and pesticides) in freshwater bream and pike-perch were determined. Histopathological changes were assessed in gills and liver of freshwater bream and pike-perch in order to determine the potential for using histological analyses in the development of methods for monitoring fish populations. The results indicated a high level of differential accumulation of elements among the analyzed tissues in wels catfish. The highest overall accumulation level was observed in vertebra, kidneys, and liver, while minimal values were observed in gallbladder, muscle, brain, and swim bladder. The accumulation of elements in the muscle and skin, as well as in the gill filaments and gill arch, differed significantly among most elements, while between the two examined parts of the liver, proximal and distal, there were no differences in concentrations of the analyzed elements. The same accumulation level was observed in the proximal and medial segments of the intestine, while both segments had significantly higher concentrations of Co and Zn and lower Mn concentration in comparison with the distal segment. There were no significant correlations between muscle and scales in element concentrations in all investigated species, which indicates that the method of using scales is inadequate for assessing muscle contamination with these elements, but that it can be used as an early warning method for assessing overall tissue contamination. Concentrations of organochlorine contaminants were below the prescribed maximum allowed levels. While the accumulation of organochlorine compounds is affected by both the position of the fish in the food chain and the lipid content, no differences in concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls and pesticides between the freshwater bream and pike-perch were observed in this study. Histopathological analysis revealed higher average histological scores in the gills of freshwater bream, which was expected, given that the gills are in constant contact with the substances found in the surrounding water, which makes them good indicators of fish exposure to pollutants in water. The total histopathological index of the liver did not differ significantly between species.

AB - Veliki kormoran (Phalacrocorax carbo Linnaeus, 1758) je najšire rasprostranjena vrsta roda Phalacrocorax i naseljava sve kontinente izuzev Južne Amerike i Antarktika.

AB - Chub (Squalius cephalus) specimens were collected in Korenita River seven months after spillover from the waste water of antimony mine tailing pond and compared with chub living in Kruščica reservoir (intended for water supply) and Međuvršje reservoir (influenced by intense emission of industrial, urban and rural wastewater). Concentrations of 15 elements (Al, As, B, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Si, Sr, Zn) were determined in muscle, liver and gills of chub by inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry (ICP-OES) and histopathological alterations in liver and gills were assessed. Chub specimens from Korenita River had higher concentrations of As, Ba and Pb in all three investigated tissues as well as higher total histopathological index values than chub from reservoirs. Specimens from Međuvršje reservoir were characterized by higher values for concentrations of Cu and Si in muscle tissue and higher values for regressive histopathological alterations in gills. Individuals of chub from Kruščica reservoir had the highest concentrations of Fe in liver, Hg in muscle and Sr and Zn in muscle while gills had the lowest value of total histopathological index. The results from the present study showed higher level of histopathological alterations as a result of mine tailing accident. As a result of mixed contamination on the Međuvršje site, histopathological index values of gills were in line with the index value from Korenita River. Increased values for Fe and Sr in chub tissue from Kruščica reservoir could be explained by geological structure of the site which is characterized by magmatic rock rich in Cu, Fe and Ni as well as dominant carbonate sediment complex of marine origin with increased level of Sr.

abstract = "Chub (Squalius cephalus) specimens were collected in Korenita River seven months after spillover from the waste water of antimony mine tailing pond and compared with chub living in Kruščica reservoir (intended for water supply) and Međuvršje reservoir (influenced by intense emission of industrial, urban and rural wastewater). AB - Great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) are piscivorous birds, and as apex predators they accumulate high levels of contaminants from the aquatic ecosystems. In the present study, we analyzed distribution of Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn in ten tissues (muscle, liver, kidney, spleen, gizzard, heart, skin, lard, breast feathers, and remiges) of the Great cormorants in the Marin Sprud locality, the Danube River, Serbia. Concentrations of elements in tissues were assessed by using inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry. Linear discriminant analysis indicates that breast feathers and remiges have a high bioaccumulation potential for heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Sr, and Zn). Those tissues had the highest concentrations of lead (Pb) (2.179 ± 0.742; 0628 ± 0.282). Maximum concentrations of mercury (Hg) were detected in liver (30.673 ± 14.081), followed by kidney, for the same element (17.409 ± 5.676), respectively. The overall maximum metal accumulation was observed in breast feathers and remiges, followed by liver and kidney, whereas the minimum values were observed in muscle, skin, and lard. The greatest concentrations of Cr, Ni, Pb, Sr, Zn, and Al were detected in feather tissues. Our study confirms that great cormorant is a good indicator species for monitoring of pollution of river and wetland ecosystems.

AB - Studies of metal accumulation in fish are mainly focused on the muscle
tissue, while the metal accumulation patterns in other tissues have been
largely neglected. Muscle is not always a good indicator of the whole
fish body contamination. Elemental accumulation in many fish tissues and
organs and their potential use in monitoring programs have not received
proper attention. In the present study, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn,
Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn concentrations were assessed by inductively coupled
plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in the following 14 tissues of the
wels catfish (Silurus glanis) from the Danube River: muscle, gills,
spleen, liver, kidneys, intestine, gizzard, heart, brain, gallbladder,
swim bladder, vertebra, operculum, and gonads. A high level of
differential elemental accumulation among the studied tissues was
observed. The maximum overall metal accumulation was observed in the
vertebra, followed by the kidneys and liver, with the metal pollution
index (MPI) values of 0.26, 0.25, and 0.24, respectively. The minimum
values were observed in the gallbladder, muscle, brain, and swim
bladder, with MPI values of 0.03, 0.06, 0.07, and 0.09, respectively.
Average metal concentrations in the fish muscle were below the maximum
allowed concentrations for human consumption. The mean As, Cd, Pb, Cu,
Fe, and Zn concentrations in the muscle were 0.028, 0.001, 0.001, 0.192,
3.966, and 3.969 mu g/g wet weight, respectively. We believe that the
presented findings could be of interest for the scientific community and
freshwater ecosystem managers. There is a need for further research that
would assess less studied tissues in different fish species.
