AB - Millipedes (class Diplopoda) represent common members of soil fauna in many ecosystems. They are usually cylindrical or flattened, also characterized by two sets of legs per segment. The relationship between locomotion and morphology has been thoroughly investigated in many arthropods. However, in millipedes, previous studies were mostly based on the influence of different environmental factors on their locomotor activity. The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between locomotor activity and morphological variability of body features (body length, body mass), walking legs, and antennae in three European julids, Pachyiulus hungaricus (Karsch, 1881), Megaphyllum unilineatum (C. L. Koch, 1838) and M. bosniense (Verhoeff, 1897). Locomotor activity was videotaped by a web-camera during 15- minute periods and analyzed by ANY-maze software. Antennae and legs were photographed, and their size and shape were estimated using geometric morphometric approach afterwards. Obtained results point out that the evident difference in measured morphological traits among analyzed millipede species significantly determinates their locomotor activity. Moreover, the relationship between locomotor activity and morphological traits is both species-specific and sex-specific.

1. AB - Fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has been representing one of the most suitable model systems for studying underlying mechanisms in various biological research for more than a hundred years. Findings in the field of genetics and genomics certainly paved the way for this model system to be used in the study of the mechanisms underlying complex human diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and others. It can be also used in studying the effects of nutrition and/or malnutrition, and to some extent, be extrapolated to humans. In the year 2000, we collected D. melanogaster flies from natural population and established and maintained five “nutritional” strains. Flies were reared on standard cornmeal laboratory food and four fruit/vegetable diets. All substrates were analysed for protein/carbohydrate ratios, and their antioxidant properties were established. During the years of running in vivo studies, we have shown that diet can affect individuals on many levels. As the most pertinent to the fitness, we observed the impact of diet on body morphology (the size, shape and symmetry of certain body traits), the chemistry of odors essential for social and sexual recognition, behavior, and life history traits. We also considered food choice in those flies in order to find out how they maintained nutritional homeostasis. In addition, we experimented with standard Drosophila diet by adding chemicals and some bioactive plant components in growing substrates (such as the black chokeberry fruit extract), widely used as a supplementary source in human diet and medicine. Here we will present a short overview of the most important results of our research, dealing with the fruit fly nutrition. Having in mind the key similarity in some metabolic pathways in Drosophila and mammals, our studies could be applicable for understanding the possible effects of various diets, drug-treatments and their potential benefits for humans.

Intervjuisali
smo 415 učenika (uzrasta od 11 do 14 godina). Radeći zadatke alternativnog i
test (χ2).
dečaka i devojčica.
AB - The Biology curriculum in primary school addresses various topics, including
healthy diet, a school-based and out of school physical activities. The aim of
the study is to investigate health habits of students from 5th to 8th grade of
primary school. We interviewed 415 students (ages 11 to 14). Doing an
alternative choice and the multiple choice tests, they could opt for a particular
answer about their breakfast diet, drinking of water habits, and their physical
activity behaviors. We used Chi-square test (χ2) to determine if there are
differences in examined habits between boys and girls, and among ages,
respectively. The Coefficient of contingency we used to measure the degree
of association between the ages and student's answer to specific questions.
Related to diet, we observed a significant difference between boys and girls in
what they eat for breakfast, in all grades. We also noted significant difference
between ages: in girls, there was a strong correlation between answers to a
certain diet question and the age, while in boys we have not established such
association. In habits related to water consumption, there was no significant
difference between boys and girls. However, we noticed a significant
difference in water consumption between ages. Difference in doing physical
activities between boys and girls exists only in the 7th grade. Only in girls, we
noticed significant difference between ages, but the correlation between
response and age was weak. Results of this research provide important
information in implementation of strategies for promotion healthy lifestyles
among school-age children.

fizičke vežbe. Da bismo utvrdili da li postoje razlike u ispitivanim navikama
između dečaka i devojčica, odnosno među uzrastima koristili smo Hi-kvadrat
test (χ2).
dečaka i devojčica.
školskog uzrasta., The Biology curriculum in primary school addresses various topics, including
healthy diet, a school-based and out of school physical activities. The aim of
the study is to investigate health habits of students from 5th to 8th grade of
primary school.
Results of this research provide important
information in implementation of strategies for promotion healthy lifestyles
among school-age children.",

AB - Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in Drosophila melanogaster represent the basis of chemical communication being involved in
many important biological functions. The aim of this study was to characterize chemical composition and variation of cuticular
profiles in five D. melanogaster strains. These strains were reared for approximately 300 generations on five diets: standard
cornmeal medium and substrates prepared with apple, banana, tomato, and carrot. Differences in quantity and/or quality in
CHCs were assumed as a result of activation of different metabolic pathways involved in food digestion and adaptations to the
particular diet type.
In total, independently of sex and strain, 66 chemical compounds were identified. In females of all strains, 60 compounds were
identified, while, in males, 47 compounds were extracted. Certain new chemical compounds for D. melanogaster were found.
MANOVA confirmed that CHC amounts significantly depend on sex and substrates, as well as on their interactions. Discriminant
analysis revealed that flies belonging to ÐappleÏ and ÐcarrotÏ strains exhibited the most noticeable differences in CHC repertoires.
A non-hydrocarbon pheromone, cis-vaccenyl acetate (cVA) also contributed to the variation in the pheromone bouquet among
the strains. Variability detected in CHCs and cVAmay be used in the explanation of differences in mating behaviour previously
determined in analyzed fly strains.
