biocompatibility of extracts was confirmed using MRC‐5 cells. Extracts of moss from spring season have shown significant antiproliferative activity against MDA‐MB‐231 cell line
(inhibition rate ~50%), as well as anti‐neuroinflammatory activity. Furthermore, the effects of seasonal variation (spring, summer, autumn) on the immunomodulatory potential of
ethyl‐acetate extract were examined. Summer aspect of moss has led to the greatest reduction of ROS production, while autumn aspect had the greatest impact on the reduction of NO
production by LPS‐activated BV2 cells. Additionally, the supernatant‐transfer model proved that treatment with moss extracts from summer and autumn seasons of LPS‐activated BV2
cells exhibit neuroprotective activity towards SH‐SY5Y neurons. The obtained data suggest that extracts from moss H. cupressiforme possess significant immunomodulatory potential
evaluated in vitro, which may be useful in conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and breast cancer. In terms of anti‐neuroinflammatory/neuroprotective activity,
summer and autumn were characterized as the most favorable seasons.

AB  - In this study, we aimed to examine the chemical composition and biochemical activities (antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antineurodegenerative) of seasonal aspects (spring, summer, autumn) of moss Hypnum cupressiforme extracts. The extracts were prepared using Soxhlet extractor. Chemical characterization of extracts was performed via spectrophotometric assays and LC‐MS. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined by DPPH (2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picryl‐hydrazyl‐hydrate), total reduction power, and β‐carotene bleaching assays. Extracts were analyzed for their inhibitory activity on α‐glucosidase, α‐amylase, acetylcholinesterase, and tyrosinase. The chemical analysis of the moss extracts revealed the presence of flavonoids, phenolic acids, and triterpenoids. The highest concentration of these compounds was found in the moss from summer season, and was significantly higher in comparison to the spring and autumn aspects. Major compounds identified by LC‐MS in H. cupressiforme extracts were kaempferol, p‐hydroxybenzoic, protocatechuic, p‐coumaric, gallic, and caffeic acid. According to biochemical assays investigated extracts exhibited significant antineurodegenerative potential, evaluated by the capacity to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase. Among the examined aspects, summer and autumn were found particularly efficient, especially at the lowest tested concentrations. Regarding β‐carotene bleaching test, the summer aspect showed the best activity at the highest concentration, while the spring aspect was found more efficient at the lowest investigated concentration. The obtained data suggest that the most favorable season in terms of chemical composition and biochemical characteristics of moss H. cupressiforme is summer. This moss is a promising source of biologically active compounds that may be useful in the treatment of various pathological conditions.

AB  - Bioactive compounds from natural sources are of great importance because of their potential pharmacological activity and tremendous structural diversity. In this study, the chemical composition of different moss extracts of Hedwigia ciliata P. Beauv. have been examined, as well as their antioxidant, antineurodegenerative/anti-neuroinflammatory, antidiabetic, and antiproliferative potential. The extracts were prepared by Soxhlet extractor using solvents of different polarity. Chemical characterization of the extracts revealed the presence of phenolics and flavonoid compounds, together with triterpenoids as secondary metabolites of high biological activity. Significant antioxidant properties of all the extracts were exhibited using the β-carotene assay. The highest activities were found for water:ethanol extract (with the highest inhibition rate of 96%), but also significant inhibition was measured for ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts (80% and 70%, respectively). Confirmation of biocompatibility of investigated moss extracts has been performed using normal human fibroblast cell line, MRC-5. The H . ciliata extracts exhibited significant antiproliferative activity (~ 50%) against the MDA-MB-231 (human breast adenocarcinoma cell line), which has not previously been reported elsewhere. The Griess assay confirmed the potential anti-neuroinflammatory activity of the extracts, as significant effects in reducing NO production by LPS-stimulated BV2 (normal murine microglia cell line) was observed. This data is in line with noted antineurodegenerative potential measured by the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (with the highest inhibition rate of 60% for ethyl acetate extract) and tyrosinase (with the highest inhibition rate of 70% for ethanol extract). Additionally, the H . ciliata extracts exhibited significant antidiabetic effect mediated by α-glucosidase inhibition (with the highest inhibition rate of 80% for ethyl acetate extract). The obtained data suggest the presence of immunomodulatory effects of the moss extracts in vitro , which allows the design of new experiments aimed at detecting and characterizing bioactive compounds of the extracts and additionally elucidate detailed mechanisms of their effects.

In this study, the chemical composition of different moss extracts of Hedwigia ciliata P. Beauv. was examined, and further tested for antioxidant, antineurodegenerative/anti-neuroinflammatory, antidiabetic, and antiproliferative activity in vitro. The extracts were prepared by Soxhlet extractor using solvents of different polarity. Chemical analysis revealed the presence of phenolics, flavonoids, and triterpenoids as secondary metabolites of high biological activity. Antioxidant activity of extracts was assessed using three different methods, DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), total reducing power assay, and β-carotene/linoleic acid assay. To evaluate the enzyme-inhibitory activity, extracts were screened for α-amylase, α-glucosidase, acetylcholinesterase, and tyrosinase inhibitory effects. The biocompatibility of moss extracts was confirmed using normal human fibroblast cell line, MRC-5. The H. ciliata extracts displayed significant antiproliferative activity (~ 50% inhibition) against the MDA-MB-231 (human breast adenocarcinoma) cells, which had not previously been reported elsewhere. The potential anti-neuroinflammatory activity was observed due to significant reduction of the NO production by LPS-stimulated BV2 (normal murine microglia cell line), being in line with previously recognized antineurodegenerative potential, as measured by the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase activity. Furthermore, the H. ciliata extracts displayed significant antidiabetic effect via α-glucosidase inhibition. In general, the obtained results suggest the potential immunomodulatory activity of the moss H. ciliata extracts, remaining to be characterized in more detail in search for mechanisms underlying the immunomodulation processes.

The extracts were prepared by Soxhlet extractor using solvents of different polarity. Chemical analysis revealed the presence of phenolics, flavonoids, and triterpenoids as secondary metabolites of high biological activity. Antioxidant activity of extracts was assessed using three different methods, DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), total reducing power assay, and β-carotene/linoleic acid assay. To evaluate the enzyme-inhibitory activity, extracts were screened for α-amylase, α-glucosidase, acetylcholinesterase, and tyrosinase inhibitory effects. The biocompatibility of moss extracts was confirmed using normal human fibroblast cell line, MRC-5. The H. ciliata extracts displayed significant antiproliferative activity (~ 50% inhibition) against the MDA-MB-231 (human breast adenocarcinoma) cells, which had not previously been reported elsewhere. The potential anti-neuroinflammatory activity was observed due to significant reduction of the NO production by LPS-stimulated BV2 (normal murine microglia cell line), being in line with previously recognized antineurodegenerative potential, as measured by the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase activity. Furthermore, the H. ciliata extracts displayed significant antidiabetic effect via α-glucosidase inhibition. In general, the obtained results suggest the potential immunomodulatory activity of the moss H. ciliata extracts, remaining to be characterized in more detail in search for mechanisms underlying the immunomodulation processes.",
