AB  - This study was carried out at the Danube River and its tributaries during the Joint Danube
Survey 4 (JDS4) expedition. Three freshwater benthic species were used to estimate the quantity
of microplastics (MPs): Corbicula spp., Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Claparede, 1862), and Polypedilum
nubeculosum (Meigen, 1804). Following the kick and sweep technique, individuals were sampled using
a hand net or dredge. In order to estimate the number of MP particles/individual particles/g wet
body mass, the body mass and total length of all specimens were measured. Alkaline (Corbicula spp.
and L. hoffmaisteri) and enzymatic (P. nubeculosum) protocols were performed for tissue degradation.
All samples were filtered through glass microfiber filters (mesh size 0.5 μm). The particles were
photographed, measured, and counted. A total of 1904, 169, and 204 MPs were isolated from
Corbicula spp., L. hoffmaisteri, and P. nubeculosum, respectively. To confirm the chemical composition
of isolated MPs, a subsample of 46 particles of the fragmented particles from 14 sampling sites was
analysed via μ-ATR-FTIR spectroscopy analysis. The particles were characterised as polycarbonate
(PC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene–polyethylene copolymer (PP-PE), nylon
(polyamide-PA) and cellophane, with the domination of PET.

AB  - During the Joint Danube Survey 4 in 2019, we investigated plastic debris in Danube River, from Germany to the Black Sea (more than 2,000 km of the river stretch). The main aim of the study was to categorize and to quantify microplastic particles in living systems. Freshwater Asian clams Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774) was used as test organism. Individuals were collected from 23 sites using a hand net (ap. 25 cm× 25 cm, mesh size 500 μm). In order to isolate plastic particles, the samples were digested by alkaline method, using a KOH 10% solution and incubation at 65 ⁰C for 12 h. The digested samples were filtrated through a glass microfiber filters, with 0.5 µm mesh size. Collected particles were photographed and categorized based on the size and coloration. Particles were counted manually, photographed using Nikon SMZ 745T Stereomicroscope and measured in program ImageJ. In 216 examined specimens a total of 1,998 microplastic particles were isolated with an average of 5.59 ± 3.71 fibrils and 4.37 ± 2.46 fragments per organism; or 40.77 ± 73.75 fibrils and 25.84 ± 33.17 fragments per g body weight. Dominant microplastic particles were between 0.4 and 0.5 mm in diameter (characterized as medium-sized), with an average length 0.43 mm ± 0.26 in the Danube and 0.49 mm ± 0.26 in the tributaries. In order to confirm chemical composition of isolated microliter, 46 particles of the hard plastic from 14 sampling sites were analyzed using Nicolet iN10 Fourier transform infrared microscope with micro ATR accessory and cooled MCT detector, using 128 scans at resolution of 4 cm1 . Analyses revealed presence of five different types of polymers, with the domination of polyethylene-terephthalate.

AB  - Teritorija Beograda se odlikuje bogatim sistemom kanala koji imaju ulogu u odvodnjavanju i u uklanjanju otpadnih voda. Ovi kanali su u manjoj ili većoj meri izloženi različitim antropogenim pritiscima. S druge strane, neki od njih protiču kroz zone sanitarne zaštite izvorišta beogradskog vodovoda. U cilju ocene stanja ovih vodenih ekosistema analizirali smo makrobeskičmenjake iz osam kanala u zoni grada Beograda. Uzorci su prikupljeni u periodu visokih i niskih voda 2022. godine. Zabeleženo je prisustvo 70 taksona u period visokih i 53 taksona u periodu niskih voda. Najveće bogatstvo vrsta zabeleženo je u kanalima PKB, Vizelj i Karaš kanala u periodu visokih i u kanalu Galovica u periodu niskih voda. Najveću frekvencu imala je grupa Chironomidae. Period niskih voda karakterisalo je ujednačeno prisustvo taksonomskih grupa, dok je u periodu visokih zapažen veći udeo Crustacea, Oligochaeta i Chironomidae. Niske vode karakteriše veći udeo predatora, dok je u perodu visokih voda zastupljeno više razlišitih funkcionalnih tipova ishrane. Biološki parametri ukazuju na II klasu kvaliteta voda na kanalima Vizelj i Karaš što ukazuje na značaj redovnog održavanja kanala.
AB  - The Belgrade area is characterised by a rich system of canals that play a role in drainage
and waste water removal. These canals are more or less exposed to various anthropogenic
influences. On the other hand, some of them flow through the sanitary protection zones of
the sources of Belgrade's water supply. To assess the potential of these aquatic ecosystems,
we analysed macroinvertebrates from eight canals around Belgrade. Samples were collected
during the high and low water periods in 2022. In the high water period 70 taxa were
detected and in the low water period 53 taxa. The highest species richness was found in the PKB, Viselj and Karaš canals during the period of high water and in the Galovica canal
during the period of low water. The Chironomidae group had the highest frequency. The
period of low water was characterised by a uniform occurrence of taxonomic groups, while
during the high water period a higher proportion of Crustacea, Oligochaeta and
Chironomidae was observed. The low water period was characterised by a higher
proportion of predators, while a greater diversity of functional feeding types were found
during the high water period. The biological parameters indicate the II class of water quality
in the Viselj and Karaš canals, which indicates the importance of regular cana maintenance.

Effects of environmental factors on the distribution and diversity of aquatic oligochaetes

AB  - The aim of our study was to detect actual distributions of oligochaete species, and to identify their ecological differentiation with respect to environmental factors, altitude, temperature, Oxygen concentration, conductivity, total organic Carbon, and water body type. Although widespread, differentiation of oligochaeta communities in four waterbody types and altitudinal groups can be observed through alpha and beta diversity. Differentiation of oligochaete communities was analysed using MANOVA, while the ecological preferences of species were presented with logistic Gaussian regression analyses. The highest number of oligochaeta species was recorded in oligochaete communities in medium and large rivers. Total beta diversity decreased with decreasing of waterbody size, increasing of substrate size, river flow velocity, as well as altitude. Communities from small mountain rivers and streams and large and medium rivers with larger substrate were separated from other oligochaete communities. When coarser substrate is prevalent in smaller and medium rivers, a domination of a certain family was observed:  Lumbriculidae (> 800 m a.s.l.), Propapidae and Enchytraeidae (500-800 m) and Naididae (<500 m a.s.l.). It is clear that common oligochaeta species, with significantly overlapping ranges in running waters in Serbia, still show a clear grouping with respect to preference for certain types of waterbodies.

AB  - Balkansko poluostrvo predstavlja centar evropskog biodiverziteta u pogledu faune slatkovodnih Gastropoda, a značajan broj taksona su stenovalenti, uske rasprostranjenosti.
U radu je dat pregled distribucije slatkovodne faune puževa u izvorima i malim planinskim potocima Zapadnog Balkana, kao i glavne pretnje koje utiču na opadanje biodiverziteta ove važne grupe slatkovodnih organizama. Najznačajnije pretnje za biodiverzitet slatkovodnih puževa u malim vodotocima i izvorima su degradacija staništa (mini hidroelektrane, hidrotehnički radovi na zaštiti od poplava, nekontrolisana seča šuma) i kaptiranje izvora. Poznavanje diverziteta i brojnosti Balkanskih slatkovodnih puževa, naglašava značaj sprovođenja mera zaštite i očuvanja biodiverziteta ovog dela Evrope.
AB  - The Balkan Peninsula is a center of Europe’s biodiversity in respect to freshwater gastropods and many of recorded taxa are stenobionts of narrow distribution. This manuscript presents review of the freshwater gastropod fauna distribution in springs and small mountain streams of the Western Balkan and points to the main threats that influence the decline of diversity of this important group of aquatic organisms. The most significant threats to the diversity of freshwater gastropods in small streams and springs are habitat degradation (physical destruction of habitats due to mini hydropower plants construction, hydro-technical works related to flood protection, faulty forest management excavation of material), and water abstraction. Knowledge of a considerable number of Balkan gastropod species, underlines the importance for the long-term conservation of biodiversity in this part of Europe.

AB  - Plastic pollution is recognized as ubiquitous and different approaches have been used
to detect and evaluate effects on aquatic biota. Here, we present Asian clam Corbicula
fluminea (Müller, 1774) as a suitable model organism for detecting microplastic
pollution in freshwater ecosystems. The study was conducted on the Danube River and
its tributaries. Following the multi-habitat procedure, specimens were sampled using a
hand net (ap. 25 cm × 25 cm, mesh size 500 μm) sampling. Out of a total of 51 sampling
sites, C. fluminea was collected at 23 sites, whereas 15 sites were on the Danube and
8 sites on its tributaries. From each site 10 specimens were randomly selected. The
shell length, shell width, total weight and body weight were measured. The samples
were digested by alkaline method, using a KOH 10% solution and incubation at 65 ⁰C
for 12 h. Collected particles were photographed and assigned to one of 2 major
microplastic categories: fibers and fragments. Categories were divided in
subcategories based on the coloration of the particles. Particles were counted manually,
photographed and measured by the use of Nikon SMZ 745T Stereomicroscope. All
collected particles were measured in the program ImageJ. Microplastic particles were
detected in all samples of C. fluminea, on average 5.59 ± 3.71 fibrils and 4.37 ± 2.46
fragments per organism; or 40.77 ± 73.75 fibrils and 25.84 ± 33.17 fragments per g
body weight, 1998 in total. Medium-sized microplastic particles were dominant, with
an average length of 0.43 mm ± 0.26 in the Danube and 0.49 mm ± 0.26 in the
tributaries. Among fibers and fragments, blue fibers (81%) and transparent fragments
(42.8%) were dominant. In order to confirm chemical composition of isolated
microliter, 46 particles of the hard plastic from 14 sampling sites were analyzed with
micro- FTIR spectroscopy analysis. Analyzed particles were detected as polyethyleneterephthalate
and cellophane, most commonly.

Alohtona vrsta Corbicula fluminea (Muller, 1774) korišćena je kao model organizam za analizu čestica mikroplastike. Ukupno je prikupljeno 216 jedinki sa 23 lokaliteta. Sakupljene čestice su fotografisane, izmerene, prebrojane i klasifikovane u jednu od 5 glavnih kategorija mikroplastike: vlakna, tvrda plastika, najlon, guma ili ostalo, u rasponu veličina od 0,02 do 4,67 mm. Ukupno je prikupljeno 1998 čestica mikroplastike sa prosečno 9,25 čestica po organizmu ili 26,4 čestica g-1 vlažne telesne težine školjke. Na osnovu analize mikroFTIR spektroskopije, čestice su okarakterisane kao polikarbonat,
polietilen tereftalat (PET), polipropilen-polietilen kopolimer, najlon (poliamid-PA) i celofan, sa dominacijom PET-a, koji se koristi za proizvodnju plastičnih boca. Studija mikroplastike JDS4 u bioti dala je prve informacije o plastičnim česticama prisutnih u bioti, što ukazuje na značajan pritisak plastikom duž reke Dunav.
AB  - During 2019, within the JDS4 expedition, for the first time, research was conducted that included the detection, quantification and categorization of microplastic particles present in the biota of freshwater ecosystems. The research was conducted along 2040 km of the Danube and larger tributaries, from Germany to the Black Sea. The allochthonous species Corbicula fluminea (Muller, 1774) was used as a model organism for the analysis of microplastic particles. A total of 216 individuals from 23 localities were collected. The collected particles were photographed, measured, counted and classified into one of the 5 main categories of microplastics: fibers, hard plastics, nylon, rubber or other, ranging in size from 0.02 to 4.67 mm. A total of 1998 microplastic particles were collected with an average of 9.25 particles per organism or 26.4 particles of g-1 wet shell body weight. Based on microFTIR spectroscopy analysis, the particles were characterized as polycarbonate, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene-polyethylene copolymer, nylon (polyamide-PA) and cellophane, with a predominance of PET, which is used to produce plastic bottles. The study of JDS4 microplastics in biota provided the first information on plastic particles present in biota, which indicates an plastic pollution along the Danube River.

AB  - Benthic communities contain some of the most threatened organisms in aquatic habitats due to different anthropogenic pressures. The high abundance of microplastics in sediments will continue to increase in the future, further increasing the probability of interactions between macroinvertebrates and microplastics. In the present study, a benthic community in a relatively pristine shallow pond was exposed either to an environmentally relevant high concentration of a microplastic mixture of 80 g m-2 in the sediment, or a control sediment, without the addition of microplastics. The mixture of microplastics contained irregularly shaped polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, and polyamide in a ratio of 50:25:25%, respectively. The in situ experiment lasted for 100 d. The total number of taxa that colonized the microcosms was 22 (17 in the control and 18 in the microplastic treatment), and the colonization was not affected by the treatment. The most dominant group within the macroinvertebrate community was the dipteran family Chironomidae, in both the control and the microplastic treatment. AB  - The study was conducted on the Danube River, within the project Joint Danube Survey 3 (JDS3). The main aim was to estimate the quantity of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems through passive biological monitoring. Three freshwater species were used for microplastic (MP) isolation from different taxonomic groups of organisms: Mollusca, Oligochaeta, and Chironomidae (Diptera), with the following species: Lithoglyphus naticoides (C. Pfeiffer, 1828), Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Claparede, 1862), and Chironomus acutiventris (Wülker, Ryser & Scholl, 1983), respectively. The samples were collected from 6 sites along the Danube River where 540 specimens were examined. The samples were digested by alkaline method (incubation in 10% KOH solution at 60 ⁰C for 24 h) and filtered through a mill silk, 10 μm mesh size. Collected particles were categorized as: fibre, hard plastic, nylon, rubber, or miscellaneous. Categories were divided into subcategories based on the coloration of the particles. Particles ingested by organisms were represented mostly by fibres and fragmented hard plastics, within the size range were from 0.03 to
4.87 mm. A total of 678 MP particles were collected with an average of 4.64 ± 1.59; 1.64 ± 0.46 and 1.24 ± 0.34 items/organism isolated from L. hoffmeisteri, L. naticoides and C. acutiventris, respectively. According to results, L. hoffmeisteri, L. naticoides and C. acutiventris could be used as proper bioaccumulators of MP pollution in the Danube River.
