AB  - Introduction: The endemic species Nepeta cyrenaica Quézel & Zaffran, native to northeastern Libya, is valued as an important honey-bearing plant.

Objectives: This study was aimed to examine the micromorphology, phytochemistry, and bioactivity of in vitro-propagated N. cyrenaica for the first time.

Materials and methods: The leaf indumentum was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy and further characterised for histochemistry. The chemical composition of essential oil (EO) was performed using GC-MS analysis, while dichloromethane (DCM), methanol (ME), ethanol (ET), and aqueous (AQ) extracts were analysed using qualitative and quantitative LC/MS analyses. The antioxidant activities of EO and extracts were assessed using three parallel assays, while enzyme-inhibiting effects were evaluated against four enzymes.

Results: The leaves bear various types of glandular trichomes, with lipophilic secretion predominating. The main EO component of EO was 1,8-cineole. A considerable number of phenolics and iridoids were tentatively identified in the ME extract. Quantitative LC/MS analysis confirmed that ferulic acid, rosmarinic acid, and epigallocatechin gallate were present in the highest amount in the extracts, in which three iridoids were also quantified. Although the ME extract contained the highest amount of polyphenolics and iridoids, the DCM extract showed the best overall biological potential. Additionally, EO exerted the strongest acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase inhibition.

Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the endemic N. cyrenaica can be efficiently grown under in vitro conditions, where it develops various glandular trichomes that are thought to secrete and/or accumulate bioactive compounds with valuable medicinal potential.

AB  - The scientific interest in the medicinal properties of Kombucha beverages, a carbonated drink with live microorganisms, has increased recently. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine the chemical profile and to examine the antioxidant, antidiabetic and antineurodegenerative potential of unfermented and also Kombucha fermented Camellia sinensis (green tea), Coffea arabica (coffee), and Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) extracts. The extracts were prepared as follows: the first (unfermented) set contained 1 L of water, 50 g of sucrose and 20 g of dried and ground green tea, coffee, or Reishi basidiocarp, while the second (fermented) set contained all of the aforementioned ingredients individually inoculated with Kombucha and fermented for 21 days. The chemical analysis was conducted using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The antioxidant activity was assessed by DPPH, total reducing power (TRP), and β-carotene bleaching assays. The inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase activity was used to estimate the antidiabetic potential, while the level of inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and tyrosinase (TYR) was used to evaluate the antineurodegenerative activity. The results suggested that the fermented extracts of green tea, coffee, and Reishi exert significant antioxidant effects, although they were lower compared to the unfermented extracts. The unfermented green tea extract exhibited the highest DPPH-scavenging activity (87.46%) and the highest preservation of β-carotene (92.41%), while the fermented coffee extract showed the highest TRP (120.14 mg AAE per g) at 10 mg mL−1. Although the extracts did not inhibit the activity of α-amylase, they were quite effective at inhibiting α-glucosidase, especially the unfermented Reishi extract, inhibiting 95.16% (at a concentration of 10 mg mL−1) of α-glucosidase activity, which was slightly higher than the positive control at the same concentration. The most effective AChE inhibitor was unfermented green tea extract (68.51%), while the fermented coffee extract inhibited 34.66% of TYR activity at 10 mg mL−1. Altogether, these results are in accordance with the differences found in the extracts’ chemical composition. Finally, this is the first report that highlights the differences in the chemical profile between the unfermented and Kombucha fermented green tea, coffee and Reishi extracts, while it also reveals, for the first time, the antineurodegenerative potential of Kombucha fermented Reishi extract. The examined extracts represent potent functional foods, while their more detailed mechanisms of action are expected to be revealed in future research.

AB  - This research was aimed to assess the potential of Glechoma hederacea, Hyssopus officinalis, Lavandula angustifolia, Leonurus cardiaca, Marrubium vulgare and Sideritis scardica (Lamiaceae) methanolic, ethanolic and aqueous extracts against the damaging effects of oxidative stress using different experimental models. The chemical characterization was done spectrophotometrically by quantifying total phenolics, phenolic acids, flavonoids and flavonols in the extracts, as well as by employing HPLC-DAD technique. Moreover, DPPH assay was used to assess the extracts' radical scavenging potential. Genoprotective properties of the extracts were evaluated using plasmid pUC19 Escherichia coli XL1-Blue, whereas their antigenotoxic potential was determined using Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 and normal human lung fibroblasts. All of the extracts showed antioxidant activity in DPPH assay. Furthermore, the results have shown that aqueous extracts provided the best protection for plasmid DNA, while alcoholic extracts most effectively contributed to the preservation of prokaryotic DNA. Additionally, each of the tested samples significantly protected the eukaryotic cells against genomic damages. Finally, despite not showing exceptional results in DPPH assay, S. scardica extracts are regarded as the most favorable in maintaining the integrity of DNA, which might be due to high quantities of phenolics such as quercetin (up to 17.95 mg g-1), naringin (up to 5.07 mg g-1) and luteolin-7-O-glucoside (up to 3.54 mg g-1). Overall, this comprehensive concept highlights the ability of these Lamiaceae species to safeguard the DNA from reactive oxygen species, to curtail the inflicted damage and also improve the efficiency of the DNA repair mechanisms, while emphasizing the importance of polyphenols as their active principles.

AB  - This study was designed to evaluate the genoprotective, antigenotoxic, as well as antitumor potential of methanolic, ethanolic, and aqueous extracts of Melissa officinalis, Mentha × piperita, Ocimum basilicum, Rosmarinus officinalis, Salvia officinalis, and Satureja montana (Lamiaceae), in different model systems. The polyphenols in these extracts were quantified both spectrophotometrically and using HPLC-DAD technique, while DPPH assay was used to assess the antioxidant activity. The genoprotective potential was tested on pUC19 Escherichia coli XL1-blue, and the antigenotoxicity on Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 and human lung fibroblasts, while the antitumor activity was assessed on colorectal cancer cells. Rosmarinic acid, quercetin, rutin, and luteolin-7-O-glucoside were among the identified compounds. Methanolic extracts had the best DPPH-scavenging and SOS-inducing activities, while ethanolic extracts exhibited the highest antigenotoxicity. Additionally, all extracts exhibited genoprotective potential on plasmid DNA. The antitumor effect was mediated by modulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO) production, and exhibition of genotoxic effects on tumor cells, especially with O. basilicum ethanolic extract. Generally, the investigated extracts were able to provide antioxidant protection for the acellular, prokaryotic, and normal human DNA, while also modulating the production of ROS and NO in tumor cells, leading to genotoxicity toward these cells and their decrease in proliferation.

abstract = "This study was designed to evaluate the genoprotective, antigenotoxic, as well as antitumor potential of methanolic, ethanolic, and aqueous extracts of Melissa officinalis, Mentha × piperita, Ocimum basilicum, Rosmarinus officinalis, Salvia officinalis, and Satureja montana (Lamiaceae), in different model systems. The polyphenols in these extracts were quantified both spectrophotometrically and using HPLC-DAD technique, while DPPH assay was used to assess the antioxidant activity. The genoprotective potential was tested on pUC19 Escherichia coli XL1-blue, and the antigenotoxicity on Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 and human lung fibroblasts, while the antitumor activity was assessed on colorectal cancer cells. Rosmarinic acid, quercetin, rutin, and luteolin-7-O-glucoside were among the identified compounds. Methanolic extracts had the best DPPH-scavenging and SOS-inducing activities, while ethanolic extracts exhibited the highest antigenotoxicity. Additionally, all extracts exhibited genoprotective potential on plasmid DNA. The antitumor effect was mediated by modulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO) production, and exhibition of genotoxic effects on tumor cells, especially with O. basilicum ethanolic extract. Generally, the investigated extracts were able to provide antioxidant protection for the acellular, prokaryotic, and normal human DNA, while also modulating the production of ROS and NO in tumor cells, leading to genotoxicity toward these cells and their decrease in proliferation.",

AB  - In this study, we examined Salvia amplexicaulis Lam., S. jurisicii Košanin and S. ringens Sibth. & Sm. collected in the Republic of North Macedonia, which are for the first time subjected to detailed micromorphological and structural analysis using light and scanning electron microscopy. The nutlets and mucilage were additionally subjected to spectroscopic analysis using Raman and Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. The anatomical structure of stems and leaves is described and compared. The stems, leaves and calyces bear numerous one- and multi-cellular nonglandular trichomes, and various peltate, capitate and digitiform glandular trichomes. The nutlets differ in size and shape, as well as in myxocarpy. The nutlets predominantly contained α-linolenic and linoleic acid, whereas the mucilages are primarily formed of polysaccharides. The results obtained in this study confirmed the importance of micromorphological and anatomical analysis of Salvia L. spp. plant parts, particularly trichomes and nutlets, and hence contributing to the knowledge about the variety of micromorphological characteristics within the genus Salvia L.

AB  - The main objective of this research was to evaluate the impact of methanolic, ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Origanum majorana L., Origanum vulgare L., Teucrium chamaedrys L., Teucrium montanum L., Thymus serpyllum L. and Thymus vulgaris L. (Lamiaceae) on the effects of free radicals using different model systems. The extracts were characterized on the basis of the contents of total phenolics, phenolic acids, flavonoids and flavonols, and also using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection. Antioxidant activity in vitro was assessed using DPPH assay. The genoprotective properties were tested using plasmid relaxation assay on pUC19 E. coli XL1-Blue, while SOS/umuC assay on Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 and Comet assay on human lung fibroblasts were used to assess the antigenotoxicity of the extracts. Ethanolic extracts had the most phenolics (up to 236.20 mg GAE/g at 0.5 mg/mL), flavonoids (up to 42.47 mg QE/g at 0.5 mg/mL) and flavonols (up to 16.56 mg QE/g at 0.5 mg/mL), and they exhibited the highest DPPH activity (up to 92.16% at 0.25 mg/mL). Interestingly enough, aqueous extracts provided the best protection of plasmid DNA (the lowest IC50 value was 0.17 mg/mL). Methanolic extracts, on the other hand, most efficiently protected the prokaryotic DNA, while all the extracts had a significant impact against genomic damages inflicted on human fibroblasts. O. vulgare extracts are considered to be the most promising in preserving the overall DNA integrity against oxidative genomic damages. Moreover, HPLC-DAD analysis highlighted rosmarinic acid as the most abundant in the investigated samples (551.45 mg/mL in total in all the extracts), followed by luteolin-7-O-glucoside (150.19 mg/mL in total), while their presence correlates with most of the displayed activities. The novelty of this study is reflected in the application of a prokaryotic model for testing the antigenotoxic effects of Lamiaceae species, as no previous reports have yet been published on the genoprotective potential of these species.

AB  - Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the chemistry and biological potential of mosses, since a large number of biologically active compounds have been found within these species. This study aimed at examining the chemical composition and immunomodulatory potential (antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-neuroinflammatory/antineurodegenerative, and antitumor activities) of moss Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. extracts. Corresponding extracts have been obtained applying Soxhlet extractor. The chemical characterization was performed using spectrophotometric assays and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The extracts were analyzed for antioxidant activity and for inhibitory activities on α-glucosidase, α-amylase, acetylcholinesterase, and tyrosinase. Additionally, extracts were tested against four cell lines-MRC-5, BV2, HCT-116, and MDA-MB-231-for antitumor and anti-inflammatory activities. Chemical analysis of extracts revealed the presence of flavonoids, phenolic acids, and triterpenoids. Major compounds identified by LC-MS in H. cupressiforme were kaempferol and five phenolic acids: p-hydroxybenzoic, protocatechuic, p-coumaric, gallic, and caffeic acid. According to biochemical assays the investigated extracts exhibited significant immunomodulatory potential. Significant antiproliferative potential against MDA-MB-231 cells has been observed together with the promising anti-neuroinflammatory application. The obtained data suggest that moss H. cupressiforme is a valuable natural source of biologically active compounds with potential application in the pharmaceutical industry.

The corresponding extracts were obtained using solvents of different polarities and their mixtures with Soxhlet extractor and further characterized by spectrophotometric assays and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS). In this study, the chemical composition of different moss extracts of Hedwigia ciliata P. Beauv. was examined, and further tested for antioxidant, antineurodegenerative/anti-neuroinflammatory, antidiabetic, and antiproliferative activity in vitro. The extracts were prepared by Soxhlet extractor using solvents of different polarity. Chemical analysis revealed the presence of phenolics, flavonoids, and triterpenoids as secondary metabolites of high biological activity. Antioxidant activity of extracts was assessed using three different methods, DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), total reducing power assay, and β-carotene/linoleic acid assay. To evaluate the enzyme-inhibitory activity, extracts were screened for α-amylase, α-glucosidase, acetylcholinesterase, and tyrosinase inhibitory effects. The biocompatibility of moss extracts was confirmed using normal human fibroblast cell line, MRC-5. The H. ciliata extracts displayed significant antiproliferative activity (~ 50% inhibition) against the MDA-MB-231 (human breast adenocarcinoma) cells, which had not previously been reported elsewhere. The potential anti-neuroinflammatory activity was observed due to significant reduction of the NO production by LPS-stimulated BV2 (normal murine microglia cell line), being in line with previously recognized antineurodegenerative potential, as measured by the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase activity. Furthermore, the H. ciliata extracts displayed significant antidiabetic effect via α-glucosidase inhibition. In general, the obtained results suggest the potential immunomodulatory activity of the moss H. ciliata extracts, remaining to be characterized in more detail in search for mechanisms underlying the immunomodulation processes.

AB  - The physiological imbalance between the production and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), known as oxidative stress, is responsible for developing and progression of a plethora of diseases – cancer, among others. Since plants are recognized as potential antioxidant agents, the aim of this study was to chemically characterize ethanolic extracts of 18 species from Lamiaceae family using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), followed by testing the antioxidant activity using ABTS assay. Biocompatibility of the investigated extracts was assessed by MTT assay on normal human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5). Finally, antiproliferative activity was evaluated using MTT assay on human colorectal cancer (HCT-116) cell line, while the effects of extracts on superoxide anion radical (O2•-) production were tested using NBT assay. Melissa officinalis, Mentha piperita, Origanum majorana, O. vulgare, and Thymus vulgaris showed the highest antioxidant activity against ABTS radicals. LC-MS analysis indicated that these extracts mostly contain caffeic, protocatechuic and p-coumaric acids. The extracts were biocompatible with MRC-5 cell line. Interestingly, Lavandula angustifolia and Ocimum basilicum extracts, which were less active against ABTS radicals, showed a significant antiproliferative effect against HCT-116. Moreover, L. angustifolia and T. vulgaris extracts significantly stimulated the production of O2•- in HCT-116, indicating potential antitumor activity. The extracts that expressed antiproliferative effect and stimulated ROS production contain higher amounts of rosmarinic, caffeic and chlorogenic acids, naringin, luteolin, apigenin and cirsimaritin, indicating that some of them, or more probably their synergistic effects, are responsible for the extracts’ ability to moderate the production of ROS in HCT-116 cells.

Elliot have recently become one of the most popular and widely used berry fruits, and there are numerous studies dealing with the investigation of their chemical composition and biological activities. Unlike berries, chokeberry leaves were far less investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a bioactivity-based analysis of chokeberry leaves collected after berries were harvested. Chemical analysis of hydroethanolic chokeberry extract and its ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water fractions was performed. Antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and antineurodegenerative activities of the obtained samples were assessed by in vitro tests. The highest total phenolics content was found in n-butanol fraction (221.5 mg gallic acid equivalents/g dw). Fourteen compounds (six phenolic acids and eight flavonoids) were identified in the samples. Caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and quercetin glycosides were dominant phenolic compounds. The highest content of phenolic acids, as well as flavonoids, was recorded in n-butanol fraction (80.75 mg/g dw and 47.79 mg/g dw, respectively). This fraction was the most active in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Also, the n-butanol fraction was the most effective inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and tyrosinase (TYR) enzymes. All samples showed a better inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase enzyme with inhibition concentrations IC50 = 4.21 - 9.22 μg/mL, than α-amylase enzymes (IC50 = 14.36 - 88.61 μg/mL). Pearson’s correlation between the content of individual phenolics and the results of biological tests was performed. Thus, hyperoside and isoquercitrin showed a significant correlation with DPPH and ABTS tests, caffeoylquinic acids with FRAP test, quercetin 3-O-vicianoside with β-carotene assay, hyperoside and isoquercitrin with α-amylase inhibition activity, and isorhamnetin 3-O-rutinoside with α-glucosidase inhibition assay. Considering the obtained results, chokeberry leaves represent a valuable natural source of phenolic compounds with promising potential for the development of new products with beneficial effects on human health.

AB  - It is now widely accepted that bioactive compounds of fruits and vegetables reduce oxidative stress, thus having the beneficial effect of decreasing the risk of many human diseases. The aim of this in vivo study was to evaluate the possible protective effects of Aronia melanocarpa (Michx) Elliott fruit extract using Drosophila melanogaster Meigen, 1830 larvae. Study was done in the year 2016, in Department of Genetics of Populations and Ecogenotoxicology at the Institute for Biological Research, University of Belgrade. Simultaneously with treatments, co-treatments with the same concentrations of black chokeberry fruit extract mixed with a methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) were performed. Fitness traits and morphological characters were monitored. Flies fed on undiluted fruit extract, on MMS + undiluted fruit extract and on MMS, exhibited a prolonged developmental time, lower viability and negatively-impacted wing development. Positive biological effects were observed in flies that developed on substrates with 2 and 25% A. melanocarpa extract. Only a mixture of MMS + 25% fruit extract showed positive effects on both fitness components and wing development in comparison with other MMS co-treatments, indicating the ability of this concentration to protect the cells from MMS-induced damage.

AB  - This work represents an ethnobotanical and ethnomedicinal study focused on recording autochthonous pear varieties of the Polimlje region in southwest Serbia. The purpose of the study was to highlight genetic resources of pear varieties in situ and emphasize aspects of ethnodiversity and traditional knowledge. A special feature of the research area is the great diversity of indigenous varieties of pear, which have been cultivated for hundreds of years. Forty-six respondents from 25 to 78 years of age residing in 23 villages were interviewed, and 26 autochthonous pear varieties were recorded in the field. Among them 11.5% are widely available, 26.9% are rare, and 61.5% are very rare. For ethnomedicinal purposes, pear is used as a remedy against hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and constipation; for reduction of body mass; as a uroseptic and/or an antirheumatic; and for cancer prevention. Pears are consumed as fresh fruit and in numerous food products. Depopulation of the investigated rural area is directly responsible for depletion of the gene pool of pear varieties and for loss of traditional knowledge. Preservation can be achieved by in situ methods such as raising awareness of the local inhabitants and ensuring support of the State.

AB  - Th is study   documents the ethnobotanical and ethnomedicinal knowledge of the local inhabitants in the region Polimlje in Southwest Serbia, focused on recording rare autochthonous pear varieties (Pyrus communis). A special feature of Polimlje, as an unique multiethnic complex of natural and cultural heritage, is the great diversity of indigenous varieties of pears and breeding tradition in the households for hundreds of years. Objectives of the study were: to establish the diversity of indigenous pear varieties in order to preserve the unique P. communis gene fond characteristic to this region, and to explore their use in ethnomedicine and traditional food production. Th e opened and semi-structured interviews were done with 40 people aged between 30-80 years (29 men and 11 women), during June - September 2015, on the territory of 23 villages. Th e results of this study indicate the presence of 23 autochtonous pear varieties: 7 are determined as rare (Vidovača, Ječmenjača, Ilinjača, Lubeničarka, Medunak, Zimnjača, Takiša) and 16 as extremely rare (Jagodarka, Mirisavka, Sijerak, Turundžija, Stambolka, Čađavica, Okruglica, Mesnjača, Jarac, Bazva, Tepavac, Lončara, Kantaruša, Ovčara, Turšijara, Budaljača). A lot of varieties remain in the old and abandoned homes and the rugged terrain. For medicinal purpose pear is used (fresh or dried fruit, juice or compote) as antihypertensive remedy (65.2%), antidiabetic or anticholesterol (63%), anticonstipation remedy (54.3%), as well as for body mass reduction (65.2%). Tea made from the pear skin is used for urolithiasis - stone and sand in the kidney (36.9%), pear tea and fresh fruit juice are applied as antirheumatics (26%) and for cancer prevention (10.87%). Pears are consumed as fresh fruit, in pies and cakes, or they are processed in a compote, juice, jam or marmalade, baby food, jelly, syrup, dried fruit, pear brandy and other traditional products (sita, vodnjika). Depopulation of investigated rural area is directly related to disappearance of pear varieties gene pool, thereby losing traditional knowledge. Preservation can be achieved with in situ methods, by raising the awareness of the inhabitants and through the support of the State.

AB  - Micromorphological and ultrastructural analyses of the leaf trichomes of Salvia fruticosa Mill. were performed by light and electron microscopy. The leaves bear numerous non-glandular unbranched trichomes, and peltate, capitate and digitiform glandular trichomes. Very elongated flagelliform non-glandular trichomes densely covered the leaf surfaces, with especially abundance on the leaf margins. Peltate trichomes consist of a basal epidermal cell, a very short stalk cell and a large round head of eight secretory cells arranged in a circle. Capitate trichomes can be divided into two main types, short-stalked and long-stalked, and further into five subtypes according to the number of stalk cells, morphology and number of glandular head cells. Digitiform trichomes consist of one basal cell, one or two stalk cells and one apical secretory cell, which are of similar diameter and approximately equal length.

AB  - The genus Thymus L. belongs to the family Lamiaceae, and comprises numerous aromatic species which are used for medical purposes and also as culinary herbs. Thymus malyi Ronninger is an endemic species from central Balkan which grows on serpentine hills. Histochemical analyses of the peltate and capitate glandular trichomes of Thymus malyi were carried out using light microscopy. Results of histochemical tests showed positive reaction to phenol compounds in the secretory heads of peltate trichomes. Positive reaction for terpenes was obtained in capitate trichomes and in the subcuticular spaces of peltate trichomes. Lipid reaction was positive in the stalk cell of the capitate trichomes, and in the peltate trichomes heads. Positive reaction for polysaccharides was observed in the secretory head of both types of glandular trichomes, with more intensive reaction in the capitate trichomes.

AB  - The purpose of this study was to resolve the question of whether various nitrogen sources and concentrations affect characteristics of selected G. lucidum ligninolytic enzymes participating in wheat straw fermentation. This is the first study reporting the presence of versatile peroxidase activity in crude extract of G. lucidum culture, as well as isoforms profile of Mn-oxidizing peroxidases. NH(4)NO(3) was the optimum nitrogen source for laccase and Mn-dependent peroxidase activity, while peptone was the optimum one for versatile peroxidase activity. Four bands with laccase activity were obtained by native PAGE and IEF separations from medium enriched with inorganic nitrogen source, and only two bands from medium containing organic source. Medium composition was not shown to affect isoenzyme patterns of Mn-oxidizing peroxidases. Four isoforms of Mn-dependent peroxidase and three of versatile peroxidase were obtained on native PAGE. By IEF separation, five isoforms of Mn-dependent peroxidase and only two of versatile peroxidase were observed. The results demonstrated that G. lucidum has potential for mineralization and transformation of various agricultural residues and should take more significant participation in large-scale biotechnological processes.

AB  - Micromorphology, distribution, and histochemistry of the trichomes of Thymus lykae were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM)and confocal laser scanning electron microscopy (CLSM). The leaves, stem, and calyx bear numerous glandular and non-glandular trichomes. Two types of glandular trichomes are identified - peltate and capitate. Results of histochemical tests showed positive reactions to polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids. Yellow autofluorescence of secreted material was noticed in peltate and capitate trichomes. Strong reddish-yellow autofluorescence of the lipophilic and hydrophilic secreted material was observed with CLSM.
AB  - Mikromorfologija, distribucija i histohemijska analiza trihoma kod vrste Thymus lykae urađena je korišćenjem skening elektronskog mikroskopa i konfokalnog laserskog skening mikroskopa. Nežlezdane, negranate i dva tipa žlezdanih trihoma - peltatne i kapitatne opisane suuovom radu. Brojne nežlezdane i žlezdane trihome nalazile suse kako na listovima (i na licu i na naličju)tako i na stablu i na čašici. Rezultati histohemijskih istraživanja pokazala supozitivne reakcije na polisaharide, lipide i proteine. Sekretorni produkti unutar peltatnih trihoma imali sujako žutu autofluorescenciju, dok je u kapitatnim trihomama zapažena slabija autofluorescencija. Korišćenjem CLSM uočena je jarko crveno-žuta autofluorescencija lipofilnih i hidrofilnih sekretornih materija u žlezdanim trihomama.

AB  - This study showed that cultivation conditions (medium composition, initial medium pH, aeration rate, inoculum density) affect biomass and polysaccharide production in Ganoderma lucidum strain HAI 447. The synthetic medium (pH 5.5) with maltose at the concentration of 65.0 g L-1, peptone of 0.2%, as well as in the presence of K, Na, and Mg at concentrations of 6.0, 3.0, and 2.0 mM, respectively, presented the best conditions for biomass (29.2 g L-1) and extra- and intracellular polysaccharide (2.9 mg mL(-1) and 73.3 mg g(-1), respectively) production in the analyzed strain. Constant aeration was optimal for biomass and extracellular polysaccharide production, whereas cultivation under stationary conditions was the best for intracellular polysaccharide production. A peak in biomass and polysaccharide production was observed at an inoculum density of 20.0 mL.

AB  - The chemical composition and antimicrobial activities of essential oils isolated from Myrrhis odorata, Hypericum perforatum, and Helichrysum arenarium, were investigated against seven bacterial and six fungal species. Activity against the bacteria and C. albicans were investigated by a bioautographic test on TLC plates, while all the other fungi were tested by a microdilution test. The oil of H. arenarium, showed the best antibacterial activity, while M. odorata oil showed the lowest effect, to compare with commercial products. In contrast, the best antifungal activity was observed for M. odorata oil, while H. arenarium, showed the lowest antifungal potential. Minimal inhibitory and fungicidal concentrations for fungi were 0.5-120 mu g/mL. The oil of M. odorata showed better activity then commercial product and it can be seen that this oil is very effective against all fungi tested.
