AB - The aim of this paper is to present the distribution of the non-native species Hypania invalida (Polychacta) within Serbian waters. In 1971, this species was found for the first time in the Danube and the Sava Rivers. According to our results, H. invalida is now widespread within potamon-type rivers that are under the influence of hydromorphological alterations and exposed to intensive ship traffic. The distribution of this polychaete species, as well as some other alien aquatic invertebrate taxa Branchiura sowerbyi, Chinese pond mussel Anodonta woodiana, Spiny cheek crayfish Orconectes limosus and Asian clam Corbicula fluminea, further indicates that heavily modified waterways are suitable recipient areas for species introduction and adaptation.

AB - The aim of this paper is to present a checklist and the distribution of Oligochaeta in Serbia’s major rivers: the Danube, the Sava, and the Tisa. The data presented serve as principal inputs for the design of an effective biomonitoring system, as a part of routine monitoring of water status under the EU Water Framework Directive. The rivers under investigation flow through numerous industrial and urban centers and receive significant amounts of pollution. The effects of pollution and hydromorphological alterations are important for the distribution of Oligochaeta, which are one of the principal members of the macroinvertebrate community. A total of 52 taxa of aquatic worms from 32 genera, belonging to 9 families, have been recorded. Most of the observed species are typical of potamon-type rivers in the region, adapted to high and moderate organic loads. The recorded community is dominated by limnophylous and limno to rheophilous, as well as pelophylous, argillophylous and psammophylous taxa. Although the investigated river stretches are considered to be of similar water types, characterized as large lowland rivers, a certain differences within the Oligochaeta species composition has been identified.

AB - Detailed and relevant limnological investigations of Serbian waters were initiated in 1958 and have continued to the present. During the period 1971-2008 we monitored biological elements as a part of working studies/projects, including the distribution of the freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbyi Lankester, 1880. We observed over 500 sampling sites in running and standing waters. Specimens of this hydro-medusa were found in five of them. Throughout the period of investigation, only the medusae stages were observed. Our purpose in this paper was to provide data of the records and distribution of this limnomedusa during the period 1958-2008 in inland waters of Serbia. These observations should contribute to knowledge on the limnofauna not only of the Balkan Peninsula but Europe as a whole.

AB - Helminths of sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus L.) from the Danube River were studied as a part of ichthyoparasitological research in Serbia. The fish were collected during the period of 2002 - 2003 along the Danube's course through the Belgrade region. A total of 517 specimens of sterlet of different ages (0+ to 1+) were examined. Helminths were found in 342 or 66.15% of the collected specimens. The examined fish yielded a total of 13 helminth species: four species of Trematoda, one species of Cestoda, four species of Nematoda, and four species of Acanthocephala.

AB - As the largest and most significant river of the Moravica region, the Golijska Moravica River arises below the highest peaks of the Golija Mountains. Faunistic-ecological research on aquatic macroinvertebrates was carried out during 2003 and 2004. Macrozoobenthos communities of the Golijska Moravica had not previously been the subject of any hydrobiological studies, and this was the main reason why we conducted their systematic and complex investigation. A list of taxa of aquatic macroinvertebrates is presented and their qualitative composition analyzed. During the period of investigation, a total of 13 groups and 147 taxa were found.
AB - Reka Golijska Moravica je najveća i najznačajnija reka Moravičkog kraja, koja izvire ispod najviših vrhova Golije. Tokom 2003. i 2004. godine na ovoj brdsko-planinskoj tekućici sprovedena je faunističko-ekološka studija organizama faune dna - akvatičnih makro beskičmenjaka. Zajednica makrozoobentosa reke Moravice, do sada, nije bila predmet hidrobioloških istraživanja i to je osnovni razlog zašto je urađeno njeno sistematsko i faunističko proučavanje.

AB - The paper presents work carried out with the objective of the implementation of the European Union Water Framework Directive. The data on communities of water organisms, together with the abiotic parameters, are used to define the typology, the type of specifically reference conditions and the ecological status index, which present a basis for establishing a system of monitoring the ecological status/potential of the waters in Serbia. The results of the obtained investigations are used also in the continuation of this work in making a database on the biodiversity of landlocked bodies of water in the territory of Serbia. The investigations include phytoplankton, phytobenthos, aquatic macroinvertebrate, and ichthyofauna, as well as the biological elements used in the process of the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive. Furthermore, fish parasites are a subject of investigations for the reason that the level of parasite presence could have a significant effect on the structure of the community, and can consequently be used as a biological parameter for the ecological status/potential. The study covers all types of moving water. Field research is conducted with the aim of compiling complete data on certain biological components of moving waters. .

AB - Results of the investigation of the aquatic macroinvertebrate fauna along a 504 km stretch of the Danube River in Serbia are presented. A total of 74 macroinvertebrate taxa were observed during a 2001 survey. Oligochaeta and Mollusca were the principal components of the community with regard to species richness and abundance. Based on data on the qualitative composition of the macroinvertebrate fauna, a correspondence analysis divided the investigated stretch in three sectors - upper (Pannonian), Iron Gate sector and entrance sector to the Iron Gate stretch. The distribution patterns of certain species supported the division of sectors defined by correspondence analysis.

AB - The mayfly (Ephemeroptera) fauna was studied during investigations of the Vlasina River (Serbia) conducted in 1996. Twenty-six species from 14 genera belonging to eight families were recorded. Compared to similar aquatic ecosystems in Serbia and Europe, the ephemeropteran fauna of the Vlasina River is characterized by high species diversity. Good water quality and habitat heterogeneity led to the observed richness of taxa. Based on fauna distribution, the middle reach of the river can be divided into three different segments - upper, middle, and lower. Distribution of the two dominant families, Heptageniidae and Baetidae, is emphasized. Representatives of Baetidae reach their highest density in July, while Heptageniidae were the most abundant in November. The recorded mayflies represent widely distributed European or Holarctic species.
Dobar kvalitet vode i raznovrsnost staništa uslovljavaju i uočeno bogatstvo taksona. Predstavnici baetida dostižu najveću gustinu tokom jula, a heptagenida u novembru. Utvrđene vrste efemeroptera predstavljaju evropske ili holarktičke elemente.

AB - The aim of the study presented was to define trophic relationships within the benthic community according to functional feeding groups (FFG) in the Vlasina River (Southeast Serbia), with an attempt to use those results to describe the watercourse. In an investigation performed during 1996, a total of 125 macrozoobenthic taxa were identified, 95 of which were included in FFG analyses. Although the investigated part of the river, in its physical and chemical characteristics, as well as characteristics of the benthofauna, generally corresponds to what could be expected, certain variations of faunal composition were observed along the river. Two groups of sites were separated by FFG analysis - sites on the upper section of the river and on a tributary (the Gradska River) comprised one group, while the remaining sites made up the other.

AB - In the present study, an additional approach was used to evaluate the potential effects of the industrial development on natural population of the common plantain (Plantago major L.), previously estimated using si2 as an index of fluctuation asymmetry (FA) together with the coefficient of variation (CV). In this study, directional asymmetry (DA), a form of asymmetry in bilaterally symmetric traits, was used in order to estimate its rule as a potential indicator of developmental instability in leaf traits. Obtained results shows significantly higher DA values for the vein distances within a leaf (VD) on environmentally stressed area than in the control site. Reporting significantly higher values of DA for VD on the environmentally stressed sample and a positive relationship between FA and CV values obtained for the same trait within the same site, in a previous study, the study corroborates the potential of DA as an indicator of developmental perturbations.

AB - The present paper states conclusions about the quality of Danube water in the Belgrade Region based on analyses of the invertebrate community. The investigation was performed during periods of high (May, 2002) and low (October, 2002) water conditions. Meio- and macrozoobenthos were observed. Qualitative, quantitative, and saprobiological analyses were performed. The sampling area covered five stations along 66 km of the river. The community was represented by 26 species. Aquatic worms were the principal component of the benthos with respect to both species richness (six species) and abundance (58.39-99.47 % of the total community). Gastropods were also diverse (six species). Snails were found to be subdominant as far as participation in the total community density is concerned. Structure of the benthic community and the saprobity index (S= 2.78-3.43) indicated the presence of organic pollution. No notable differences of estimated environmental quality were observed between a station upstream from Belgrade and one situated below the exit from the broader territory of Belgrade. Since Belgrade is recognized as one of the main contaminants in regard to biodegradable pollutants in the Middle Danube, this finding points to an impressive self-purifying ability of this huge river.

AB - The present work cites results of investigating aquatic macroinvertebrates of the Danube River on the sector upstream from the Iron Gate (KM 1083-1071). The investigated part is interesting from the hydrobiological standpoint above all due to differences of faunal composition in relation to higher sections that could be expected in view of differences in overall characteristics of the river. A rich macroinvertebrate community (84 taxa) was observed. The diversity of taxa is primarily a result of habitat diversity within the given stretch. Oligochaeta and Mollusca were the principal components.

Grupe Oligochaeta i Mollusca bile su najznačajnije komponente proučavane zajednice makro invertebrata.

AB - The aim of this study was to explore the way for determination of environmental condition of running waters using macroinvertebrates. Water quality has been evaluated by using specific biological trait - saprobic group (SG) ratio. The macrozoobenthos of the Vlasina river and its two tributaries, the Gradska and Luznica rivers (south-east Serbia, Yugoslavia) was studied during 1996. A total of 125 taxa were identified. The 85 taxa were included in SG analysis and organized by saprobic values in four groups corresponding to saprobic zones. SG observation demonstrates good water quality and mild deterioration of water quality along the Vlasina river that was in co-ordination with results of physical and chemical analyses. It was underlined that SG analysis was a useful and easy to interpretative biomonitoring tool which can combined with the other community attributes to provide a full account of the understanding of the match between habitat and aquatic fauna.
