AB  - Here, from macrophylogeographic mtDNA empirical data, we propose a scenario for the evolution and speciation of two important forest trees, European black pine and Scotch pine, and their multiple subspecies and varieties. Molecular clock simulations revealed that INDEL variability in the Pinus mitochondrial genome is relatively old, i.e., from the Pliocene-Miocene epoch, and related to historical tectonic continental fluctuations rather than to climate change at a large geographic scale. For conservation and management biodiversity program recommendations, special attention is given to the relationships between different speciation models, historical migration patterns, and differences between peripheral and central populations. Species evolution involves the mixing of different speciation modes, and every speciation mode has different effects on different DNA types (e.g., mitochondrial vs. chloroplast vs. nuclear DNA). The misbalance between the contributions of different meta-population census sizes vs. effective population sizes to asymmetric migration patterns is the result of different genotypes (and subphylogenetic lines) responding to selection pressure and adaptive evolution. We propose initial minimal size of conservation unit (between 3 and 5 ha) from central and marginal natural area of distribution for both species in the dynamic management system for practical forest genetic diversity management. The proposed physical sizes were determined by the effective population size, effective radius of seed distribution data, forest density age dynamics, succession pattern, natural selection pressing and species biology [R-17].

AB  - Population variability of n-alkanes in the cuticular waxes of Serbian spruce needles from Bosnia and Herzegovina was investigated for the first time. n-Alkanes exhibited composition variability ranging from C18 to C35. The divergence of populations from Bosnia and Herzegovina and previously investigated Serbian populations was statistically confirmed by PCA, DA, and CA (Cluster analysis), which could support the fact that there are two possible spruce chemotypes: one relating to the Bosnian-Herzegovinian and the other to the Serbian populations. Climate parameters (precipitation, temperature, wind, and solar radiation) approved this conclusion.

Terpene relationships among some soft and hard pine species

AB  - In this study we have reported the chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from the needles of twelve Pinus taxa, belonging to the subgenera Pinus (sections Pinus and Trifoliae) and Strobus (sect. Quinquefoliae). Monoterpenes dominated over sesquiterpenes in most of the investigated taxa of both subgenera, except in representatives of the subsection Pinaster, subgenus Pinus. alpha-Pinene was the most abundant terpene in eight pines, but other dominant terpenes were found in some taxa -trans-caryophyllene, germacrene D, abietadiene and beta-pinene. In the subsect. Pinaster, the most dominant compounds varied from species to species. In addition, P. halepensis and P. pinaster had the highest percentage of diterpenes, while P. heldreichii was the richest in germacrene D. In the PCA and cluster analyses, three species from the subsect. Pinaster emerged as the most distant: P. halepensis, P. pinaster, and P. heldreichii. In addition, the possible taxonomic implications of the terpene profile in the analysed Pinus taxa were also discussed.

Nontrivial variations of morpho-anatomical leaf traits in natural South-eastern populations of vaccinium species from Central Balkans

AB  - Morpho-anatomical characteristics of Vaccinium myrtillus, V. uliginosum and V. vitis-idaea leaves from several sites of the Central Balkans were examined. The aim of this study was to investigate for the first time morpho-anatomical leaf traits of these species in the studied populations and to identify traits that follow a specific trend along the gradients of climate factors. Leaf traits that discriminate Vaccinium species were as follows: depth of the adaxial cuticule (AdC), thickness of the palisade tissue (PT), thickness of the spongy tissue (ST), height of the abaxial epidermal cells (AbE), height of the abaxial cuticule (AbC) and leaf thickness (LT). Populations of V. myrtillus were characterized by the smallest, and populations of V. vitis-idaea by the highest values for AdC, PT, ST, AbE and LT. Additionally, AbC was significantly larger for V. uliginosum in comparison to two other species. On the basis of morpho-anatomical traits, intraspecific variability of the studied species was explored by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Cluster Analysis (CA) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). CA based on 10 morpho-anatomical traits showed that populations of V. myrtillus and V. uliginosum that grew at lower altitudes (characterized by higher mean annual temperature) are more similar to each other. Especially V. myrtillus was responsive to the elevational gradient and exhibited the highest plasticity in morpho-anatomical leaf traits. Populations of V. vitis-idaea had a different pattern of differentiation along the elevational gradient. CA showed that the populations at the lowest and at the highest altitudes were more similar according to the morpho-anatomical leaf traits, meaning that evergreen leaves were more resistant to environmental conditions.

abstract = "Morpho-anatomical characteristics of Vaccinium myrtillus, V. uliginosum and V. vitis-idaea leaves from several sites of the Central Balkans were examined. The aim of this study was to investigate for the first time morpho-anatomical leaf traits of these species in the studied populations and to identify traits that follow a specific trend along the gradients of climate factors. Leaf traits that discriminate Vaccinium species were as follows: depth of the adaxial cuticule (AdC), thickness of the palisade tissue (PT), thickness of the spongy tissue (ST), height of the abaxial epidermal cells (AbE), height of the abaxial cuticule (AbC) and leaf thickness (LT). Populations of V. myrtillus were characterized by the smallest, and populations of V. vitis-idaea by the highest values for AdC, PT, ST, AbE and LT. Additionally, AbC was significantly larger for V. uliginosum in comparison to two other species. On the basis of morpho-anatomical traits, intraspecific variability of the studied species was explored by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Cluster Analysis (CA) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). CA based on 10 morpho-anatomical traits showed that populations of V. myrtillus and V. uliginosum that grew at lower altitudes (characterized by higher mean annual temperature) are more similar to each other. Especially V. myrtillus was responsive to the elevational gradient and exhibited the highest plasticity in morpho-anatomical leaf traits. Populations of V. vitis-idaea had a different pattern of differentiation along the elevational gradient. CA showed that the populations at the lowest and at the highest altitudes were more similar according to the morpho-anatomical leaf traits, meaning that evergreen leaves were more resistant to environmental conditions.",

AB  - Natural populations of Gentiana asclepiadea L., located at two mountainous sites, were HPLC-analyzed regarding the contents of six representative secondary metabolites. The contents of swertiamarin (SWM), gentiopicrin (GP), sweroside (SWZ), mangiferin (MGF), isoorientin (ISOOR), and isovitexin (ISOV) were determined in six populations (three per study site), and separately for aboveground and belowground plant parts. PCA showed a clear separation of four groups according to the contents of the analyzed secondary metabolites. Out of six analyzed compounds, five were present in all samples and only one (SWZ) was found in Golija populations (belowground parts) but not in Vlasina populations, and its presence can be indicative of the geolocation of populations. Clear separation of groups was mostly affected by the different contents of chemical compounds in plant parts (aboveground versus belowground) and by the differences related to population origin (higher content of SWM and GP in belowground parts of individuals from Vlasina populations and higher content of MGF and ISOOR of individuals from Golija populations). The results of this study contribute to the spatiochemical profiling of G. asclepiadea populations and a better understanding of inter- and intrapopulation variability of pharmacologically important compounds.

AB  - Vimba bream (Vimba vimba) individuals were collected from the Danube River near Belgrade, from May 2016 to May 2017. Samples of muscle and liver tissue were analyzed for concentrations of 25 elements (macro-, micro-, and toxic elements) using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). For both tissues, the highest concentrations of most elements were observed in late spring/early summer (months of May and June). Majority of statistically significant correlations between elements were positive in both tissues. Contributions of Ca, K, and Mg to human diet were in a similar range. The lowest contribution of all macroelements was observed for Na, while the contribution of Se was well above the recommended dietary allowance for this element. Levels of detected elements were well below MAC values prescribed by national and international regulations. The highest value of Hg liver/muscle index (>1) was observed in August, which could indicate a higher contamination of the sampling location in that month. Se:Hg molar ratio never drops below 1, which could indicate that Hg toxicity is prevented. THQ values showed little variation thought the year and were well below the threshold of 1, with the exception of THQ for Al in May (0.92). This element also strongly affects the hazard index.

Tree species flammability based on plant traits: A synthesis

AB  - The occurrence of large and recurring forest fires has long been associated with fire-prone environments, but this perception has been shifted rapidly in recent decades as Earths' landscapes have become increasingly threatened by severe and unpredictable fires as a result of climate changes. In this regard, the flammability of trees is a topic of great interest for ecology, management, and the development of sustainable restoration and rehabilitation plans. Tree species differ in regard to flammability, and many plant functional traits contribute to flammability at species, community and vegetation level. The relationship between plant traits and flammability at species level is important for a broader understanding of the vegetation-fire dynamic at the local and landscape scales. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the impact of individual plant traits of tree species on flammability components. By keywords-based searching of academic databases, 85 research papers were collected and analyzed. The literature synthesis shows: i) main issues addressed in studies on plant trait-based tree flammability, ii) general research output and biogeographic regions studied, iii) inventory of tree taxa investigated, iv) relationships between plant traits and flammability components, v) the most relevant plant traits that determine the flammability-related differences between species.

AB  - U radu su ispitivani ekofiziološki i ekomorfološki parametri jedinki Rubus hirtus Waldst. & Kit. iz tri prirodne populacije sa Stare planine. Sadržaj ukupnog hlorofila u listovima, procenjen metodom SPAD, kao i širina listova i odnos širina/dužina listova imali su najveće vrednosti u populaciji A koja naseljava šumsku zajednicu u kojoj dominiraju grab i kitnjak i raste u uslovima vegetacijske senke. Manje vrednosti ispitivanih parametara bile su zabeležene u populacijama B (koja je takođe locirana unutar šumskog sklopa) i C (koja se nalazi na relativno otvorenom staništu). Među-populacione razlike u ispitivanim parametrima se mogu delimično tumačiti kao prilagođenost na svetlosne uslove staništa (značajne razlike između jedinki iz populacija A i C), dok se vrednosti parametara u populaciji B ne mogu objasniti delovanjem svetlosnih uslova, već ukazuju na neophodnost razmatranja kompleksnih sredinskih faktora na tom lokalitetu, pre svega kontaminiranosti zemljišta i podzemnih voda teškim metalima.
AB  - Natural populations of Rubus hirtus Waldst. & Kit. were studied at three locations along the Gabrovnica river on Stara Planina mountain, to assess the inter-population differences in ecophysiological and ecomorphological parameters. The content of total chlorophyll in leaves, estimated by the SPAD method, as well as leaf width and leaf width/length ratio had the highest values in population A, which inhabits a forest community dominated by hornbeam and sessile oak and grows in vegetative shade. Populations B (which is also located within the forest complex) and C (which is located in a relatively open habitat) had lower values for the examined parameters. Inter-population differences in the examined parameters can be partially interpreted as an adaptation to habitat light conditions (significant differences between individuals from populations A and C). However, the values of parameters in population B cannot be explained by light conditions, indicating the need to consider complex environmental conditions at that site, primarily heavy metal contamination of soil and groundwater.

AB  - Changes in climate, land use, and land management impact the occurrence and severity of wildland fires in many parts of the world. This is particularly evident in Europe, where ongoing changes in land use have strongly modified fire patterns over the last decades. Although satellite data by the European Forest Fire Information System provide large-scale wildland fire statistics across European countries, there is still a crucial need to collect and summarize in-depth local analysis and understanding of the wildland fire condition and associated challenges across Europe. This article aims to provide a general overview of the current wildland fire patterns and challenges as perceived by national representatives, supplemented by national fire statistics (2009–2018) across Europe. For each of the 31 countries included, we present a perspective authored by scientists or practitioners from each respective country, representing a wide range of disciplines and cultural backgrounds. The authors were selected from members of the COST Action “Fire and the Earth System: Science & Society” funded by the European Commission with the aim to share knowledge and improve communication about wildland fire. Where relevant, a brief overview of key studies, particular wildland fire challenges a country is facing, and an overview of notable recent fire events are also presented. Key perceived challenges included (1) the lack of consistent and detailed records for wildland fire events, within and across countries, (2) an increase in wildland fires that pose a risk to properties and human life due to high population densities and sprawl into forested regions, and (3) the view that, irrespective of changes in management, climate change is likely to increase the frequency and impact of wildland fires in the coming decades. Addressing challenge (1) will not only be valuable in advancing national and pan-European wildland fire management strategies, but also in evaluating perceptions (2) and (3) against more robust quantitative evidence.

AB  - Phytochemistry deals with the study of secondary metabolites produced by plants that synthesize these compounds for many reasons, including their own protection against attack of herbivores and plant diseases. Secondary metabolites are believed to represent plant adaptation to various environmental factors and that they enabled the survival of the species. Secondary metabolites of plants can have curative or toxic effects in humans and animals. Herbal medicine has a long tradition in folk medicine and until the early 20th century, when synthetic organic chemistry began to develop, plants were the main source of medicines. The two basic goals of our phytochemical research are: isolation and identification of new (biologically active) compounds ? potential drugs, and chemotaxonomy (chemosystematics). In the following text through one selected example, the genus Amphoricarpos Vis., our phytochemical research is shown on both aspects.

AB  - Many biological and related disciplines recognize population as a carrier of species-specific characteristics adapted to habitat requirements. Within a species’ area of distribution, a wide range of biotic and abiotic factors synergistically shape different habitats, and plant populations develop a set of specific features to respond to given environmental conditions. Distinct populations with phenotypic differences determine the ecotypes within the taxon. Similarly, the chemotype is defined as a chemically distinct plant population, according to the composition of secondary metabolites. Many secondary metabolites have pronounced biological activities and implications for human health. With respect to searching for new sources of secondary metabolites with potential health effects, natural populations of plant species attract the substantial attention of researchers because their habitats are highly diverse and unpolluted. Many studies on this subject have confirmed the biological and chemical diversity of natural populations and emphasized the need for the conservation of natural resources.

AB  - Wild edible fruits are highly valued in human nutrition and traditional medicine due to their high content of dietary fibers, vitamins, minerals, and natural antioxidants. Physiologically active components that can potentially reduce risks for chronic diseases leads to these plants being classified as “functional food.” The different classes of phytochemicals can be synthetized based on plants’ genetic potential and environmental conditions. Although these phytochemicals have a lower bioactive potential than pharmaceuticals, their daily intake in small amounts can have noticeable long-term physiological effects. The area of the Balkan Peninsula is characterized by a unique biodiversity and represents one of the centers of plant diversity. Serbia is distinguished by its exceptional floral diversity of vascular plants, which is the result of specific climatic, orographic, edaphic, and historical conditions. Wild fruits mostly inhabit mesophilous deciduous forests in hilly–mountainous regions. In the territory of Serbia, over 90 species of wild fruits have been described, belonging to 15 families and 26 genera.

AB  - The variability of n-alkanes in the needle cuticular wax of Pinus heldreichii and P. peuce in two natural populations from the Scardo-Pindic mountains was investigated for the first time. Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses of two-year-old needles were performed us-ing an Agilent 7890A GC equipped with an inert 5975C XL EI/CI mass spectrometer detector (MSD) and a flame ionization detector (FID) connected by a capillary flow technology 2-way splitter with make-up. An HP-5MS capillary column was used. n-Alkanes ranged from C19 to C33. In P. heldreichii the most abundant were C23, C25 and C27 (16.3, 15.6 and 12.8 % on average, respectively), while in P. peuce they were C29, C25, and C27 (16.5, 15.3 and 13.5 % on average, resp.). Mid-chain and long-chain n-alkanes prevailed in both species. Principle component analysis (PCA) and Cluster analyses of five and six n-alkanes, respectively, showed divergence of the Scardo-Pindic populations from the Dinaric ones.

AB  - The variability of volatiles isolated from twigs by the static headspace (HS) method in seven natural populations of Picea omorika from Serbia was investigated for the first time. In the overall chemical profile, monoterpenes strongly dominated hydrocarbons as the most volatile compounds (95.7%). The dominant compounds were ?-pinene (29.5 %), ?-pinene (25.7%) and myrcene (13.0%), totaling 68.2% of the volatiles on average. The following nine volatiles were found to be present in medium-to-high amounts (0.5-10%): tricyclene, camphene, ?-phellandrene, ?-3-carene, p-cymene, ?-phellandrene, terpinolene, (E)-caryophyllene, and germacrene D. Out of the 78 volatiles detected, the six most abundant (?-pinene, ?-pinene, myrcene, ?-3-carene, ?-phellandrene and camphene) were selected for principle component analysis (PCA) and cluster analyses (CA). PCA revealed a high degree of similarity between populations, while CA showed a degree of separation of two populations from the others. The presented results are in agreement with previous phytochemical and molecular analyses of this species that confirm high variability in both specialized metabolites and genetic markers.

AB  - Variability in the contents of representative secondary metabolites in Gentiana pneumonanthe individuals was investigated in relation to population origin, plant parts and developmental stage. Chemical analyses (HPLC) of six secondary metabolites (swertiamarin (SWM), gentiopicrin (GP), sweroside (SWZ), mangiferin (MGF), isoorientin (ISOOR), and isovitexin (ISOV)) were performed for individuals from six populations located within a 3 × 3 km area at Maljen Mt., and separately for below- and above ground plant parts in three developmental stages. Different plant parts showed pronounced differences in the contents of the six secondary metabolites and a high level of variability during the plant ontogeny. The highest contents of three dominant compounds (SWM, GP, and MGF) were detected in different developmental stages. Both below- and above ground plant parts contained GP, MGF, SWZ, and SWM at some developmental stages, whereas ISOOR and ISOV were registered in above ground parts. The full-flowering stage was characterized by the highest contents of MGF, GP, and ISOOR in aboveground-, and GP in belowground parts. In the post-flowering stage, a high content of MF was detected in below ground parts. The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of interpopulation, ontogenetic and between-organ variability in rare and threatened G. pneumonanthe.

AB  - Inter- and intrapopulation variability in six natural populations of the rare species Gentiana pneumonanthe was examined based on morphological and chemical data. Population size and linear morphometric parameters differed significantly among populations, but without a clear connection to habitat conditions, i. e. water supply and light availability. Leaf shape varied from ovate to lanceolate in all populations, and one population was distinctive in having the largest number of leaves of transitional shape. HPLC analyses of six secondary metabolites were performed separately for belowground parts, and aboveground vegetative and reproductive parts of individual plants (6 populations ×7 individuals ×3 plant parts, n=126) in order to examine differences at the population and individual levels. Three secoiridoids (swertiamarin (SWM), sweroside (SWZ), and gentiopicrin (GP)), one xanthone (mangiferin (MGF)), and two flavones (isoorientin (IO) and isovitexin (IV)) were detected and quantified in the analyzed samples: sweroside dominated in the aboveground reproductive part, mangiferin in the aboveground vegetative part, and gentiopicrin in the belowground part. At the population level, differences in contents of the analyzed chemicals among populations were significant only for a few metabolites. At the individual level, a pronounced organ-dependent distribution of secondary metabolites was revealed. The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of natural variability within populations of the rare and threatened G. pneumonanthe, and provide data on the contents and within-plant distribution of secondary metabolites, which are important as pharmacologically active compounds and may be useful for further biotechnological procedures regarding this species.

The mean values of the analyzed characters were as follows: 5.91 cm (needle length), 1.35 mm (needle width), 0.85 mm (needle thickness), 25.05 μm (cuticle + epidermis thickness), 69.90 μm (height of hypodermal cells), 21.76 μm (resin duct diameter), 3.4 (number of hypodermis layers), and 3.6 (number of resin ducts). P. heldreichii needles also had 2-5 hypodermis layers and 0-12 resin ducts. The highest variation was in the number of resin ducts (CV=27%). In comparison with previously investigated needles from the Dinaric mountains, P. heldreichii needles from the Scardo-Pindic massif were shorter and had a thicker layer of hypodermis. PCA and CA visualize partial segregation of P. heldreichii populations between the two mountain massifs.

AB  - The reliability of diarylheptanoids as chemotaxonomic markers at inter- and intraspecific levels has been investigated. Six diarylheptanoids were quantified in bark ethanol extracts of four Alnus spp. populations by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The populations described here as locus classicus Alnus glutinosa (I) and locus classicus Alnus incana (III) are clearly differentiated. Compared to population I, individuals in population III have higher extract yields and hirsutanonol-5- O - β -D-glucopyranoside content and lower contents of hirsutanonol, rubranoside A and oregonin. Individuals from neighboring populations of A. glutinosa (II) and A. incana (IV) share similar contents of hirsutanonol. All the studied populations exhibit a high intrapopulation variability of the selected diarylheptanoids; they have a heterogeneous chemotype and they partially overlap. The geographical proximity of populations II and IV increases their chemical similarity. Principal component analysis (PCA) clearly shows that the biggest dispersion of individuals lies within population IV. The reason for its heterogeneity might be its physical proximity to population II, i.e. the appearance of hybrids. Also, geometric morphometrics of leaves was performed as a screening criterion for spontaneous hybrids.

Fruits were sampled at the time of full ripening, mid-September, from two localities that differed in terms of orographic and environmental conditions. Fresh fruit extracts were analyzed by LC–MS/MS to determine the presence and contents of neochlorogenic acid, quercitrin, isoquercetin, hyperoside, rutoside and querciturone. While all of the tested compounds were detected in both species, their content was several times higher in C. sanguinea. Locality-dependent differences were tested by appropriate statistical tests, which confirmed that the contents of all compounds significantly differed in C. mas, whereas the content of only one compound differed in C. sanguinea. Differences between populations were also revealed by PCA analyses. Both species showed clear separation of populations based on the analyzed phenolic compounds. The results showed that a specific environment can significantly affect the contents of certain secondary metabolites, as in the case of C. mas, and/or that the synthesis of these compounds can be to a lesser extent influenced by external factors, as in the case of C. sanguinea.

AB  - The aim of the present study was to determine the content of six phenolic compounds, natural anti-oxidants, in fruits of wild growing Cornus mas L. Fruits were sampled from two different locations. The extracts were obtained from fresh fruits and subjected to LC-MS/MS analysis to identify and quantify the content of neochlorogenic acid and five derivatives of quercetin. All of the analyzed phenolic compounds were detected in total sample of C. mas fruits, and their occurrence and content were clearly locality-dependent. Out of analyzed compounds, the prevailing was neochlorogenic acid (5-O-CQ) in samples from Avala, whereas glucuronide (Q-3-O-GlcA) dominated in samples from Zlatar lake. These results showed that wild growing populations are rich source of natural antioxidants, especially those with proved pharmacological activity in humans, such as glucuronide. As indicated by data on traditional usages and ethnopharmacological knowledge, C. mas fruits collected in wild are valuable source of natural antioxidants and deserve attention in preservation of genetic and biological diversity.

AB  - Diarylheptanoids are a group of secondary metabolites widely distributed in the Betulaceae family and characteristic for Alnus species. In this study, the chemotaxonomic power of diarylheptanoids, such as hirsutanonol-5-O-β-d-glucopyranoside, rubranoside A, oregonin, platyphylloside, alnuside A and hirsutanonol, has been investigated in combination with principal component analysis (PCA) for differentiation of Alnus species. Concentrations of six diarylheptanoids in the bark extracts of two natural populations of Alnus glutinosa (black alder) and Alnus incana (gray alder) were determined by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). PCA clearly shows the separation of three groups. Populations I (A. glutinosa) and II (A. incana) both consisted of individuals of the corresponding species. Four individuals from both sampled populations formed a separate group (population III), which possibly represents a hybrid group. Accordingly, diarylheptanoids may serve in combination with PCA as chemotaxonomic markers at the species level, which may also reveal hybrid species.

Concentrations of six diarylheptanoids in the bark extracts of two natural populations of Alnus glutinosa (black alder) and Alnus incana (gray alder) were determined by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). PCA clearly shows the separation of three groups. Populations I (A. glutinosa) and II (A. incana) both consisted of individuals of the corresponding species. Four individuals from both sampled populations formed a separate group (population III), which possibly represents a hybrid group. Accordingly, diarylheptanoids may serve in combination with PCA as chemotaxonomic markers at the species level, which may also reveal hybrid species.",

AB  - Genetic relationships among 12 taxa from subgenera Pinus and Strobus were studied through fourteen microsatellite markers, previously developed for Pinus taeda. To our knowledge, this is the first comparative study of pines using nuclear EST-microsatellites (EST-SSRs). The total number of detected alleles in all investigated taxa was 72 (5.14 in average). The numbers of alleles per locus and PIC values for estimated markers ranged from 3 to 7, and from 0.43 to 0.81, respectively. Presented results are in accordance with majority of previous genetic investigations and infrageneric classification of genus Pinus up to the sectional level, while subsectional position of some species has still not dismissed, especially regarding relict ones. According to nuclear EST-SSRs, Pinus heldreichii is in early-diverging position within subsection Pinaster and shows the greatest closeness with P. halepensis, while Pinus peuce doesn't have basal position within subsection Strobus being more close to P. strobus than to P. wallichiana. Furthermore, the closest connections in subsection Pinus were found between two Pinus nigra subspecies (dalmatica and nigra) as well as between P. sylvestris and P. mugo.

A geometric morphometric approach was used to assess size and shape variation of needles and to address questions of sexual dimorphism and phenotypic plasticity. Population-specific sexual size dimorphism was found. In the Tara population, females had larger needles than males and this was in accordance with earlier reports on T. baccata dimorphism. We found it unusual that in the other two populations, Kopaonik and Malinik, sexual size dimorphism was constrained and the sexes had needles of equal size. Multivariate analysis of needle shape revealed that the Tara population differed from the other two populations and was characterized by straighter, more symmetric needles. The absence of sexual size dimorphism and the less symmetrical shape of needles could be signs of a deviation from optimal conditions for yew in the Kopaonik and Malinik populations as regards mean annual temperature, precipitation, humidity and soil quality. There is also an indication that sexual size dimorphism in needles arises from a modification in female morphology and that female yews carry more information about climate. However, the conclusions presented in this study have certain limitations because of the small number of individuals in the Tara population (only 3 female and 4 male plants) that represent the quasi-total of adult yews at this site.
