AB  - Millipedes use an array of chemical compounds to defend themselves from predator attack. These chemical substances can have additional roles, i.e. defence against various pathogens. We evaluated the efficacy of the defensive secretion of Apfelbeckia insculpta (L. Koch, 1867) against bacteria, yeasts, and filamentous fungi. The tested secretion consisted of two compounds, p-cresol and phenol, and showed antibacterial, antibiofilm, and antifungal potential against all selected microorganisms. The most sensitive bacterium in our study was Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while the tested defensive secretion manifested the lowest activity against Escherichia coli. The defensive secretion of A. insculpta also showed an ability, albeit mild, to suppress biofilm formation by P. aeruginosa. Among the tested yeasts, Candida albicans and C. krusei were the most susceptible and most resistant species, respectively. Finally, the concentration of extracts obtained from the tested defensive secretion needed to achieve an antifungal effect was lowest in the case of Cladosporium cladosporioides. Fusarium verticillioides and Penicillium rubens were the micromycetes most resistant to the tested secretion. Our results indicate that antibacterial activity of the defensive secretion of A. insculpta is similar to or slightly weaker than that of streptomycin, while comparison with antimycotics showed that the tested millipede secretion has stronger activity than fluconazole, but weaker activity than nystatin and ketoconazole. The present study corroborates previous findings indicating that the defensive secretions of millipedes can have different roles apart from antipredator protection and are effective against pathogenic microorganisms.

AB  - Rickettsiales bacteria in arthropods play a significant role in both public health and arthropod ecology. However, the extensive genetic diversity of Rickettsiales endosymbionts of arthropods is still to be discovered. In 2016, 515 arthropods belonging to 9 species of four classes (Insecta, Chilopoda, Diplopoda and Arachnida) were collected in Serbia. The presence and genetic diversity of Rickettsiales bacteria were evaluated by characterizing the 16S rRNA (rrs), citrate synthase (gltA) and heat shock protein (groEL) genes. The presence of various Rickettsiales bacteria was identified in the majority of tested arthropod species. The results revealed co-circulation of five recognized Rickettsiales species including Rickettsia, Ehrlichia and Wolbachia, as well as four tentative novel species, including one tentative novel genus named Neowolbachia. These results suggest the remarkable genetic diversity of Rickettsiales bacteria in certain arthropod species in this region. Furthermore, the high prevalence of spotted fever group Rickettsia in Ixodes ricinus ticks highlights the potential public health risk of human Rickettsia infection.

AB  - It is now widely accepted that bioactive compounds of fruits and vegetables reduce oxidative stress, thus having the beneficial effect of decreasing the risk of many human diseases. The aim of this in vivo study was to evaluate the possible protective effects of Aronia melanocarpa (Michx) Elliott fruit extract using Drosophila melanogaster Meigen, 1830 larvae. Study was done in the year 2016, in Department of Genetics of Populations and Ecogenotoxicology at the Institute for Biological Research, University of Belgrade. Simultaneously with treatments, co-treatments with the same concentrations of black chokeberry fruit extract mixed with a methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) were performed. Fitness traits and morphological characters were monitored. Flies fed on undiluted fruit extract, on MMS + undiluted fruit extract and on MMS, exhibited a prolonged developmental time, lower viability and negatively-impacted wing development. Positive biological effects were observed in flies that developed on substrates with 2 and 25% A. melanocarpa extract. Only a mixture of MMS + 25% fruit extract showed positive effects on both fitness components and wing development in comparison with other MMS co-treatments, indicating the ability of this concentration to protect the cells from MMS-induced damage.

The sulphorhodamine B (SRB) assay was applied to establish the percentages of inhibition of the net growth of four human tumour cell lines and porcine liver primary non-tumour cells. The secretions of all tested ground beetle species were shown to have an antiproliferative effect on the tested cell lines. Special emphasis is put on the secretion of Abax parallelepipedus, which showed the highest antitumour potential and weakest inhibition of non-tumour cell proliferation. The antitumour and antiproliferative potential of the pygidial gland secretions of ground beetles is here demonstrated for the first time. It is suggested that certain organic acids are responsible for the action. Further investigation needs to be conducted in order to better understand the mechanisms governing the observed cytotoxic and antitumour activity.

AB  - In insects, cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profile is involved in many important biological functions and may vary in different conditions. Among fruit fly species, Drosophila subobscura is one of the most frequently used in genetic, ecological and evolutionary research, because of its rich chromosomal polymorphism, specific behavioral repertoires and habitat preferences. In this work, we identified and quantified cuticular chemoprofile of D. subobscura. Using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), 25 chemical compounds were found in males and 23 compounds were found in females. Further, ANOVA confirmed significant sexual dimorphism in cuticular chemoprofile amounts. Knowledge of cuticular chemistry could contribute to further research in D. subobscura, starting from behavioral, up to ecological, since this species is recognized as an important model system for the study and monitoring of global climate changes. © 2018, Pakistan Agricultural Scientists Forum. abstract = "In insects, cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profile is involved in many important biological functions and may vary in different conditions. Among fruit fly species, Drosophila subobscura is one of the most frequently used in genetic, ecological and evolutionary research, because of its rich chromosomal polymorphism, specific behavioral repertoires and habitat preferences. In this work, we identified and quantified cuticular chemoprofile of D. subobscura. Using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), 25 chemical compounds were found in males and 23 compounds were found in females. Further, ANOVA confirmed significant sexual dimorphism in cuticular chemoprofile amounts. Knowledge of cuticular chemistry could contribute to further research in D. subobscura, starting from behavioral, up to ecological, since this species is recognized as an important model system for the study and monitoring of global climate changes. © 2018, Pakistan Agricultural Scientists Forum. AB  - The insect cuticle serves a multitude of purposes, including: mechanical and thermal protection, water-repelling, acoustic signal absorption and coloration. The influence of cuticular structures on infrared radiation exchange and thermal balance is still largely unexplored. Here we report on the micro- and nanostructured setae covering the elytra of the longicorn beetle Rosalia alpina (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) that help the insect to survive in hot, summer environments. In the visible part of the spectrum, scale-like setae, covering the black patches of the elytra, efficiently absorb light due to the radiation trap effect. In the infrared part of the spectrum, setae of the whole elytra significantly contribute to the radiative heat exchange. From the biological point of view, insect elytra facilitate camouflage, enable rapid heating to the optimum body temperature and prevent overheating by emitting excess thermal energy.

AB  - Recently, various insect secretions have been tested as possible antimicrobial agents. In beetles, these secretions are essentially products of various exocrine glands, of which particular emphasis is on pygidial glands that are common for the suborder Adephaga. The antimicrobial potential of the pygidial gland secretion isolated from the adults of Calosoma sycophanta against human pathogens has been tested and compared with the potential of other carabid species, particularly within the tribe Carabini. The antimicrobial assay includes a microdilution method which was applied in order to determine the minimal inhibitory, minimal fungicidal and minimal bactericidal concentrations. It has been tested the effect of the secretion against eight strains of fungal and eight strains of bacterial species. The secretion sample of the tested carabid species has shown statistically significant antifungal effect against all strains of treated micromycetes, the highest in comparison with previously tested carabids (Carabus spp., Laemostenus punctatus and Abax parallelepipedus). Aspergillus versicolor proved to be the most sensitive micromycete, while the remaining seven fungal strains have shown the same level of sensibility. In comparison with commercial mycotics ketoconazole and bifonazole, applied as positive controls, the tested secretion showed much higher antifungal activity for all fungal strains. Antibacterial effect has been manifested only against one bacterial strain (Escherichia coli), contrary to other previously studied carabid species. These observations might have a significant impact on the ecological domain and possible purpose in biomedical studies and applications in the future. Additionally, morpho-histology of the pygidial glands of C. sycophanta is investigated and discussed.

AB  - The antifungal potential of the pygidial gland secretion of the troglophilic ground beetle Laemostenus
punctatus from a cave in Southeastern Serbia against cavedwelling micromycetes, isolated from the same habitat, has
been investigated. Eleven collected samples were analyzed
and 32 isolates of cave-dwelling fungi were documented. A
total of 14 fungal species were identified as members of the
genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Alternaria, Cladosporium,
Rhizopus, Trichoderma, Arthrinium, Aureobasidium,
Epicoccum, Talaromyces, and Fusarium. Five isolates were
selected for testing the antifungal activity of the pygidial gland
se cr etio n: Talaromyces d uclauxi, Aspergillus
brunneouniseriatus, Penicillium sp., Rhizopus stolonifer, and
Trichoderma viride. The microdilution method has been applied to detect minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and
minimal fungicidal concentrations (MFCs). The most sensitive isolate was Penicillium sp., while the other isolates demonstrated a high level of resistance to the tested agent.
L. punctatus has developed a special mechanism of producing
specific compounds that act synergistically within the
secretion mixture, which are responsible for the antifungal
action against pathogens from the cave. The results open opportunities for further research in the field of ground beetle
defense against pathogens, which could have an important
application in human medicine, in addition to the environmental impact, primarily.

AB  - In Serbia, Branchipus Schaeffer, 1766 is especially common in the Pannonian lowlands, where Branchipus schaefferi and Branchipus serbicus were previously reported. In the southern parts of the country, at the foothills of the Stara Planina Mountains, a Branchipus intermedius population is reported to occur. We used multivariate analysis to assess the degree of morphological variability between Branchipus populations currently ascribed to different species. Morphometric characters contributed the most to the morphological differentiation. Populations were better defined on the basis of male morphometric characters. Our results indicate that individuals from the southeastern, mountainous part of the country had the highest level of differentiation. We confirmed that this population belongs to B. intermedius. The individuals of the presumed species B. serbicus exhibited a fairly lower level of morphological differentiation in the present study, and grouped together with other lowland Serbian populations ascribed to B. schaefferi. According to this study, B. serbicus is a junior synonym of B. schaefferi.

AB  - Although all ground beetles have pygidial glands homologous in structure and function, there are many differences among species, often significant, in terms of chemical composition of the secretion and morphology of the gland components. In this paper, two predatory ground beetle species of the genus Carabus, namely C. (Tomocarabus) convexus and C. (Procrustes) coriaceus, were subjected to chemical, morphological and histological study of their pygidial glands and the glands’ secretions. Altogether, three carboxylic acids were isolated, and the pygidial gland reservoir and other glandular parts are morphologically described in the study. We also tested whether there exist differences in chemical content of the secretion obtained by upsetting the beetles in a traditional way and that obtained directly from intact reservoirs. Detailed data on morphology of the pygidial glands of both species are presented, as well as updated information about the chemical components of the glandular secretions. Apart from tiglic and methacrylic acids, which are typical for Carabus pygidial secretions, we also found benzoic acid as a minor component of the secretion in both species. In addition, a chemotaxonomic overview of Carabus taxa is given in the paper.

AB  - The concentration of 10 metallic trace elements or MTE (Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn, As, Hg, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cr) was measured in specimens of the troglophilic millipede Apfelbeckia insculpta (L. Koch, 1867) and sediment of the cave Hadži-Prodanova Pećina in western Serbia. Some MTE, like Fe and Mn, displayed much higher concentrations compared to other elements, both in the sediment and in the body of A. insculpta. On the other hand, estimation of the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) in both males and females of A. insculpta showed values greater than 1 for xenobiotic elements compared to those that are essential. In addition to chemical analyses, we examined the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPX, and GR) and the phase II biotransformation enzyme GST, as well as the content of –SH groups, in the body of A. insculpta. Activities of two (GR and GST) out of the five tested enzymes showed significant differences between the sexes. These results represent the first comprehensive report of antioxidant enzymes in myriapods. The noted differences in the investigated MTE and enzyme activities between the sexes of A. insculpta most likely reflect different metabolic activities and responses to environmental conditions in males and females.

AB  - Male genital morphology of six populations of Branchipus schaefferi from different locations in Serbia is described. Both qualitative and quantitative morphological traits were taken into consideration. The majority of males from lowland parts of the country (Pannonian Plane) had a long sickle-curved or arched spine situated on the basal part of the penis. Males sampled in the south-eastern part of the country (the region of Stara Planina Mountains) possessed short, straight or slightly bowed basal spine. A distal penile part appeared as a more stable character than the proximal one. Males from one of the examined populations possessed roundish and spineless penile tip, a feature heretofore not described in B. schaefferi.

AB  - The antimicrobial properties of the pygidial gland secretions released by the adults of the three ground beetle species, Carabus ullrichii, C. coriaceus, and Abax parallelepipedus, have been tested. Microdilution method was applied for detection of minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs), minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBCs), and minimal fungicidal concentrations (MFCs). Additionally, morpho-histology of the pygidial glands is investigated. We have tested 16 laboratory and clinical strains of human pathogens-eight bacterial both gram-positive and gram-negative species and eight fungal species. The pygidial secretion samples of C. ullrichii have showed the strongest antimicrobial effect against all strains of treated bacteria and fungi. Staphylococcus aureus, Lysteria monocytogenes, and Salmonella typhimurium proved to be the most sensitive bacterial strains. Penicillium funiculosum proved to be the most sensitive micromycete, while P. ochrochloron and P. verrucosum var. cyclopium the most resistant micromycetes. The pygidial secretion of C. coriaceus has showed antibacterial potential solely against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antifungal activity against Aspergillus fumigatus, A. versicolor, A. ochraceus, and P. ochrochloron. Antibacterial properties of pygidial gland secretion of A. parallelepipedus were achieved against P. aeruginosa, while antifungal activity was detected against five of the eight tested micromycetes (A. fumigatus, A. versicolor, A. ochraceus, Trichoderma viride, and P. verrucosum var. cyclopium). Commercial antibiotics Streptomycin and Ampicillin and mycotics Ketoconazole and Bifonazole, applied as the positive controls, showed higher antibacterial/antifungal properties for all bacterial and fungal strains. The results of this observation might have a significant impact on the environmental aspects and possible medical purpose in the future.

AB  - The antimicrobial activity of the pygidial gland secretion released by adult individuals
of the troglophilic ground beetle Laemostenus (Pristonychus) punctatus (Dejean,
1828), applying microdilution method with the aim to detect minimal inhibitory concentration,
minimal bactericidal concentration and minimal fungicidal concentration,
has been investigated. In addition, morphology of the pygidial glands is observed.
Wehave tested 16 laboratory and clinical strains of human pathogens – eight bacterial
both gram-positive and gram-negative species and eight fungal species. The pygidial
secretion samples have showed antimicrobial properties against all strains of treated
bacteria and fungi. Micrococcus flavus proved to be more resistant compared with
other bacterial strains. More significant antimicrobial properties of the secretion are
observed against Escherichia coli, which proved to be the most sensitive bacteria.
Aspergillus fumigatus proved to be the most resistant, while Penicillium ochrochloron and
Penicillium verrucosum var. cyclopium themost sensitive micromycetes. Commercial antibiotics
Streptomycin and Ampicillin and antimycotics Ketoconazole and Bifonazole, applied
as positive controls, showed higher antibacterial properties for all bacterial and
fungal strains, except for P. ochrochloron, which proved to be more resistant on
Ketoconazole compared with the pygidial gland secretion of L. (P.) punctatus. Apart
from the role in ecological aspects, the antimicrobial properties of the tested secretion
possibly might have medical significance in the future.

AB  - The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a static magnetic field on six behavioral parameters (travel distance, average speed while in motion, travel distance of the head, body rotations, time in movement, and immobility time) of the ground beetle Laemostenus (Pristonychus) punctatus (Dejean) (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Adults of this troglophilic and guanophilic beetle were randomly divided into two groups, the first exposed to a static magnetic field of 110 mT for 5 h, and the second a control group. Beetle behavior after these 5 h was monitored in an open-field test for 12 min and analyzed using ANY-maze software. Exposure to a static magnetic field of 110 mT increased motor activity (travel distance and average speed while in motion) in the first 4 min. After that there were no significant differences. We conclude that the applied static magnetic field affects motor activity of adult specimens of L. (P.) punctatus, and we discuss the mechanism, possibly through acting on the control centers responsible for orientation and movement.

AB  - Three adult cave-dwelling ground beetle species were induced to
   discharge secretions of their pygidial glands into vials.
   Dichloromethane extraction was used to obtain the secretions. In total,
   42 compounds were identified by GC/MS analysis. Pheggomisetes ninae
   contained 32 glandular compounds, Laemostenus (Pristonychus) punctatus
   13, whereas Duvalius (Paraduvalius) milutini had nine compounds.
   Caproic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids were present in the samples
   of all analyzed species. Undecane was predominant in the extract of L.
   punctatus. Palmitic acid was the major component in the secretion of D.
   milutini. Finally, the most abundant compounds in P. ninae secretion
   were heptacosene and nonacosadienes. Herein, we present the first data
   on the identification of pygidial gland secretion components in both
   troglophilous and troglobite cave-dwelling ground beetles. Some
   compounds are reported for the first time in the secretions of ground
   beetles and other higher or lower taxa. The adaptation to underground
   life has not led to a reduction or changes in the chemical defense
   mechanism in the analyzed troglophilous and troglobitic Platyninae and
   Trechinae taxa.
