AB - Understanding the spatial and temporal effects of variable environmental conditions on demographic characteristics is important in order to stop the decline of endangered-species populations. To capture interactions between a species and its environment, in this work the demographic traits of the European ground squirrel (EGS), Spermophilus citellus, were modeled as a function of agricultural landscape structure. The habitat suitability index was determined for 20 localities within the study area based on habitat use, management and type. After mapping the habitat patch occupancy in the field, crop cover maps, the average normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and automated water extraction index (AWEI) were obtained from satellite images covering the period 2013-2015. This data was used to develop population-level generalized linear models (GLMs) and individual-level conditional mixed-effects models (GLMMs) in R package Ime4, focusing on the key demographic traits of the EGS. The land composition and patch carrying capacity (PCC) are the key determinants of the endangered EGS population size, while system productivity is the main factor influencing individuals’ body condition after monitoring for variations across sampling years and age classes. The proposed landscape structural models show that human activities and abiotic factors shape the demographic rates of the EGS. Thus, to conserve threatened species, an appropriate focus on the spatial adaptation strategies should be employed.

AB - Brown frogs (R. dalmatina, R. graeca, R. temporaria) and common toad (Bufo bufo) are anuran species that can be syntopic on the territory of Serbia. They can be found in the aquatic habitats only during short breeding season in the early spring. In contrast, their tadpoles are present for a longer period of time in aquatic habitats and are easy to record. Analysis of tadpole morphology is one of the possible ways for species identification, especially when genetic methods are unavailable. Tadpoles at early developmental stages are visually very similar and thus difficult for identification in the field. The main objectives of this study were: to determine external tadpole morphological characters that can serve for taxonomic identification; to determine effectiveness of tadpole shape analyses in taxonomic identification; to develop procedures for their reliable, rapid and economic taxonomic identification. In addition, genetic identification was performed, the usage of traditional and geometric morphometic methods for morphological differentiation of tadpoles at early developmental stages was compared and phylogenetic and phenetic relationships of the analyzed species were examined. Tadpoles at early developmental stages of R. dalmatina, R. temporaria and B. bufo were collected from the field. Taxonomic identification of analyzed species was performed by DNA barcoding, using marker 16S rRNA. Traditional morphometrics was applied and the results suggested that relative head length and head width could be good discriminative characteristics for tadpoles of two Rana species and B. bufo. To distinguish between tadpoles of two analyzed brown frog species, relative tail length could be used. More detailed analyzes of size and shape of successfully laboratory raised R. dalmatina, R. temporaria and B. bufo tadpoles were conducted by comparative (2D landmark-based geometric and traditional) morphometric analyses. Both methodologies produced very similar results considering quantification and description of size and shape variability. Unlike B. bufo tadpoles, tadpoles of two Rana species were with smaller bodies and tails twice as long as the body. When two species of brown frogs were compared, R. dalmatina tadpoles had shorter tails and larger bodies. However, observed subtle shape variation of the distal region of the tail was detected only by geometric morphometrics.

AB - Freshwater polychaetes are most diverse in the Palaearctic Region and beside Lake Baikal, the second notable area of diversity is the Ponto-Caspian region, comprising low saline waters (0.5–5%) of the Black and Caspian Seas. There are several characteristic polychaetean species that are spreading from this area and among them are Hypania invalida, widespread in European freshwaters, and Manayunkia caspica, which distribution range has been probably prevented for a long time due to the Iron Gate dam. The latter Ponto-Caspian relict was found in the Danube River for the first time in 1943 and has been well known along almost the entire Romanian stretch of the river. It reached the Serbian Danube part in November 2005. After that the species has been repeatedly found at 934 rkm (the town of Kladovo), in the reservoir Iron Gate II. During the Joint Danube Survey 3 (JDS 3) in September 2013, M. caspica was recorded at five localities in total: Romania/Bulgaria: Pristol/Novo Selo; Hungary: upstream Budapest and Szob; Slovakia/Hungary: Iza/Szony and Klizska Nema as the most upstream locality. These findings moved the limit of the species distribution upstream of the Iron Gate and confirmed that this Ponto-Caspian relict, extend its known distribution from the Ponto-Caspian region to the Central and Western Europe. It is obvious that M. caspica has become a regular element of the macroinvertebrate fauna along the entire stretch of the Danube River, establishing its populations. Additional research is needed in order to understand better how the presence of this species will affect the existing communities.

AB - Leaf shape variations and developmental instability were examined for the first time in natural populations of Prunus avium (L.) L. in the central Balkan region (Bosnia and Herzegovina) at different elevational points, from 230 to 1177 m. above sea level. Geometric morphometric tools were applied to assess the variability of leaf shapes and sizes, while a fluctuating asymmetry leaf index was used as a measure of leaf developmental instability. According to the results of canonical variate analysis for the symmetric component of shape variation and hierarchical analysis of variance for centroid size, the studied populations could be partially differentiated into three groups. The co-variation between leaf form (shape and size) and climate variables was significant, estimated by two-block partial least square analysis. Climate variables (the sum of precipitation in May and the De Martonne aridity index) mostly influenced leaf shape and size. A population situated at the highest elevation had the highest value for fluctuating asymmetry leaf index, which was an indication of developmental instability. High natural variability and interpopulation differences were observed for all studied leaf traits (leaf shape, centroid size, fluctuating asymmetry leaf index, leaf area, leaf length and width, petiole length). For well-known traditional morphometric measures (leaf area, leaf length, leaf width, and petiole length) in accordance with previous studies, intrapopulation variability was greater than interpopulation variability. For centroid size and the fluctuating asymmetry leaf index (measures used in geometric morphometrics) variability was higher among populations than within them. This indicates that geometric morphometrics could give new insights into infra-specific variability.

AB - Grasslands are one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world. Spatial prioritization of high quality habitat in agricultural landscapes is needed to protect grassland biodiversity. Within this context, we focused on European ground squirrel, a keystone species in steppe and salt steppe ecosystems. Using historical data and habitat field mapping, this study evaluates species distribution and site occupancy along the southern margin of the species range (Serbia) and identifies priority conservation zones in an intensively used landscape. Using gap analysis to evaluate changes in distribution over time and land protection status of the occupied area, we found that the regional species range has been constricted by 70%, and that 43% of mapped areas were outside of conservation networks. We also used a landscape structure model and multivariate analysis to identify the effects of spatial heterogeneity on occupancy. After mapping potential conservation zones with a buffer radius of 4.6 km—the scale with significant effects on occupancy—we identified 19 potential agro-ecological zones that cover the full range of mapped species habitats. The proposed agro-ecological zones differ in percentage of occupancy, which was found to increase with the overall landscape heterogeneity. This study contributes to the ongoing effort to broaden the understanding of the ecology and conservation of the European ground squirrel and the grasslands they rely on. Conservation planning should be designed to protect grasslands occupied by ground squirrels, ensure that the agricultural matrix is permeable, and to sustain or enhance landscape heterogeneity.

AB - We conducted a comparative (2D landmark-based geometric and traditional) morphometric analysis on tadpoles at early developmental stages. Two species of brown frog (Rana dalmatina and R. temporaria) and the common toad (Bufo bufo) were involved, all raised in the laboratory from fertilized eggs collected in their natural habitat. Taxonomic identification was confirmed by the DNA barcoding method with the 16S rRNA sequence as the gene marker. Interested to compare the methodologies for quantification and description of morphological differences among tadpoles of mentioned species, we aimed to: 1) calculate interspecies genetic distances as the most relevant measurement for species differentiation, 2) determine and describe size and shape variation, 3) identify relationships among the analyzed species at the morphological level and 4) assess their classification accuracy. Within the framework of the specified aims, both methodologies produced very similar results, i.e., the smallest divergence was between R. dalmatina and R. temporaria, while the most discriminative were B. bufo and R. temporaria. However, we observed subtle shape variation of the distal region of the tail that was detected only by the geometric morphometrics. Our findings support the following. Geometric morphometric method captures more subtle shape differences that were unable to be recovered from linear measurements. It performs slightly better in classification rate. Although it was not quantified, it stands to reason that there is no difference in time investment between the two approaches. Geometric morphometrics provides more information that can be leveraged to answer further questions and it has a clear advantage in visualizing.

identified, with the most diverse representatives of the genera Navicula, Nitzschia and
Gomphonema. Values of diatom indices IPS and CEE had decreasing trend along the flow,
and worse ecological potential of the water body SA_1 in comparison to the water body
SA_2 was determined. Research on the phytobenthos of large rivers in Serbia are at the beginning, so it is necessary to continue the work on the development of a stable system of
ecological status/potential assessment, according to the legislation of the Republic of Serbia
in the field of water management, based on the guidelines of the WFD., Algological investigation of the Sava River was performed in September of 2011, 2012

AB - Istraživanje zajednica fitoplanktona prirodnih jezera Gornje i Donje bare, Orlovačko, Crno i Bijelo jezero i akumulacije Jugovo jezero u nacionalnom parku "Sutjeska" (planina Zelengora, Bosna i Hercegovina), sprovedeno je u avgustu 2016. godine. Pripadnici razdela Cryptophyta čine najveći deo biomase fitoplanktona u Jugovom jezeru, iako prema broju ćelija dominiraju sitne hlorokokalne vrste roda Kirchneriella.

AB - Girardia tigrina (Girard, 1850) (Turbellaria, Tricladida, Dugesiidae), a native freshwater triclad of North America, is a widespread species, which has been introduced by human activities into various parts of the world, including Europe. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the knowledge of this species by presenting its frst record and recent distribution in Serbia. Girardia tigrina was recorded in Serbia in 2008 in the lower stretch of the Kolubara River. After this initial fnding, the species was identifed only a few more times, but with low abundance. Its presence only in the northern part of Serbia, in the Danube River and in its proximity, points to the Danube River and its larger tributaries (the South invasive corridor) as the main route of its spread in the country. Our data suggest that G. tigrina should not be considered an invasive species but as an alien species with a minor impact on native communities.

AB - We report the frst record of the genus Oxyethira Eaton, 1873 from Serbia. This fnding increases the number of known hydroptilid genera from Serbia to four. A total of 14 larval specimens were collected in November 2015 from a small stream at the town of Indija (SW Vojvodina, Serbia). Since there are no descriptions of larvae of Oxyethira spp., it is not possible to identify the collected specimens at the species level.

AB - Ephoron virgo (Olivier, 1791) is an European burrowing filter-feeding mayfly species. Once common in large rivers, in XX century it became rare due to increased negative anthropogenic influences. In Serbia there was only one recent report of its presence, from the Danube River (Iron Gate area). The aim of this paper is to report on the first finding of E. virgo from the Sava River, and to discuss its scarce findings in the region. Three larval specimens were found in the Belgrade region in grab sample taken in 2014. In order to assess the development of the population in the region, a comprehensive investigation should be conducted.

AB - This paper discuss the effectivenes of two different sampling techniques for the study of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities, K&S method and Van Veen dredge. For comparison of sampling techniques, we used the material collected in four field surveys in 2014 and 2015 on 12 sampling sites in sector from Ledinaci (1262 rkm) to Radujevac (851 rkm). A total of 156 macroinvertebrates taxa in 16 taxonomic groups were recorded. The highest taxa richness is recorded in the group Diptera (among which the most significant is Chironomidae family), followed by Oligochaeta, Crustacea and Gastropoda, while other groups are characterized by the presence of a small number of taxa. According to our results, K&S sampling method is more effective for investigation of aquatic macroinvertebrates in compre with Van Veen grab.

AB - The investigation of small watercourses in the province of Srem was performed in November of 2015 on six localities situated at three streams. Based on recorded macroinvertebrates communities herein we provide a water quality assessment based on following metrics: total number of taxa, saprobic index, BMWP, ASPT, diversity index and percentage participation of Oligochaeta in the total macroinvertebrate community. A very low water quality was assessed downstream larger settlements (Inđija and Ruma). Our results could indicate that industrial and urban wastewaters probably act as the main treats to investigated watercourses. As only the one season (autumn) was covered in this investigation, a prolonged research is needed for more reliable data.

AB - The native crayfish species Austropotamobius torrentium presumably inhabits mountainous streams at higher altitudes. As Serbia is one of few countries in its native range with general lack of data regarding conservation status of A. torrentium, there is a need to provide up-to-date basic data regarding distribution and population status of the species. Therefore, as a starting point for planned future investigation in this paper we present a current state of knowledge of A. torrentium distribution in the target area. To date based on previously published and new findings, stone crayfish was found at 48 localities, covering seven major river basins, in total.

AB - A total of 80 aquatic macroinvertebrates taxa were recorded at six localities situated on the smaller watercourses in the province of Srem (Vojvodina, Serbia). The sampling was performed in November of 2015. Diptera were found to be the most important part of the recorded communities, both in terms of taxa richness and abundance/percentage participation. The greatest number of taxa was found at the site upstream of the City of Inđija with 41 taxa, while the lowest (only one taxon) was recorded at the downstream Inđija locality. High median values of diversity metrics used indicate the presence of taxa rich and diverse aquatic macroinvertebrate communities . Pelophilous and phytophilous, potamal and rhithral taxa were the dominant component of a community in relation to their microhabitats and habitat preferences, respectively. A very low diversity found at localities downstream of larger settlements (Inđija and Ruma) points to pronounced negative anthropogenic impacts on these small capacity components of the hydrological network in this lowland part of Serbia.

AB - Community concordance within aquatic biota could provide useful information for improving the methods used in bioassessment and biodiversity conservation management. The main goal of the study was to investigate the mechanism of community concordance between macroinvertebrates and fish in a single river basin (South Morava river Basin, Serbia). In order to achieve this, a Self organizing map (SOM) ordinated and classified sampling sites based on the community structures of five different taxa groups (macroinveretbrates (MIB), fish (FSH), Chironomidae (CHI), Macroinvertebrates without Chironomidae (MWC) and the Ephemeroptera Plecoptera Trichioptera group (EPT)). SOM also revealed 6 environmental gradients along the groups tested that significantly changed their community structures. Using the results of the SOM analysis as the input, the Mantel test quantified the highest community concordance between FSH and MIB (r = 0.42) followed by FSH and CHI (r = 0.29). The lowest concordance was recorded between FSH and EPT (r = 0.14). The indicator species analysis (IndVal) revealed 39 species to be responsible for the community patterns obtained. The Geo-SOM visualized the spatial distribution of the IndVal taxa, revealing the generators of community concordance. The strength of community concordance depends on the variability of the data on the aquatic biota. Thus, having an appropriate sampling and statistical design as well as high taxonomic resolution, as some of the factors which increase the variability in the data set, could present community concordance between fish and macroinvertebrates in an unbiased way.

AB - Introduction of alien species in aquatic ecosystems may or may not produce negative ecological and/or socio-economic impacts. In a case where impacts of introduced alien species are measurable, the biological pollution of the ecosystem should be evaluated. Assessment of biopollution of the Serbian reach of the Danube River was based on samples collected during August and September 2013. In total, 20 alien macroinvertebrate species were registered. For four species strong biopollution level was estimated: Chelicorophium curvispinum, Corbicula fluminea, Dikerogammarus villosus and Dreissena polymorpha. As these species were already proven to be highly invasive in other European waterways it indicates that applied biopollution level could be a valuable method for estimation of invasiveness of alien species.

AB - Freshwater sponges, compared to their marine counterparts have not been studied extensively in the past. The
standard approach in their identification is microscopy analysis of the sponge skeletal structures, combined with
the, ever more popular, genetic analysis. The aim of this paper is to briefly describe the use of light microscopy
and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), two methods applied in sponge ultrastructure analysis, as well as to
present preliminary results on identification of samples from the Danube River. Based on the reviewed material,
the species Spongilla lacustris (Linnaeus 1759) and Ephydatia fluviatilis (Linnaeus 1759) were identified.
This paper describes sample preparation and highlights some of the skeletal characteristics crucial for the
identification of these two freshwater sponge species, widespread in Europe, Asia and North America.

najznačajnijih i široko rasprostranjenih komponenata vodenih ekosistema kopnenih
voda.
zajednica. Raznovrsnost i rasprostranjenje unionida, do sada, nije adekvatno proučeno
populacija.
Ciljevi ovog istraživanja bili su: pregled ukupnog broja vrsta u Srbiji;
analiza strukture i dinamike populacija unionida; definisanje odnosa vrsta i
najznačajnijih parametara okruženja; analiza morfološke varijabilnosti različitih
populacija, primenom metoda geometrijske i tradicionalne morfometrije i kao
nacionalnih i međunarodnih projekata u periodu 2001.-2013. godina. Osim
diverzitet i brojnost populacije zabeleženi su u donjim tokovima velikih
istraživanih slivova, sa prikazom taksonomskih i ekoloških karakteristika
pojedinačnih vrsta.
Poredeći istorijske podatke o nalazima vrsta i savremena istraživanja,
uočene su promene u veličini areala i populacionoj dinamici pojedinih taksona.
fizičko-hemijski parametri: koncentracija kalcijuma, ukupna tvrdoća vode, BPK,
HPK, koncentracija nitrata i amonijum jona. Rezultati kanonijske korespondentne
analize ukazuju na očekivano veću osetljivost vrste U. crassus na BPK5, HPK,
koncentraciju nitrata i amonijum jona, odnosno veću toleranciju vrste A. anatina na
pomenute faktore.
veličine i oblika levog kapka ljušture različitih populacija savremenih uzoraka
Geometrijsko
morfometrijskom analizom recentnih uzoraka potvrđeno je postojanje statistički
značajnih međupopulacionih razlika u varijabilnosti veličine i oblika
morfoloških struktura. Analizom varijavilnosti morfoloških struktura uzoraka iz
muzejske zbirke, primenom metoda geometrijske morfometrije, nije potvrđeno
postojanje značajnih razlika u varijabilnosti veličine i oblika različitih podvrsta,
AB - Freshwater mussels from the family Unionidae, represent one of the most significant and widespread components of inland water ecosystems. Ecological role of this taxonomic group within water ecosystems is of great significance being an important structural and functional element of benthic communities. The diversity and distribution of Unionidae have not been researched adequately so far in Serbia, neither the species richness, nor general distribution of individual species and factors affecting the emergence of the taxon and populations density.
The aims of this research were: review of total number of species in Serbia; analysis of structure and dynamics of Unionidae populations; definition of relations between species and most significant environment parameters; morphological variability analysis of different populations applying the method of geometric and traditional morphometrics and, as the final aim, risk evalulation regarding aquatic species extinction on national level and a conservation strategy recommendation.
Material used for analysis was collected during the realization of several national and international projects during the period 2001-2013. Besides contemporary researches, the analysis also includes historical data obtained from available collection of Ante Tadić from the Natural History Museum in Belgrade, period 1953-1972.
A thorough material analysis in the region of Serbia led to the determination of
presence of 7 fresh water mussels species from family Unionidae, classified into 3 genera.
The highest diversity and population abundance were recorded in lower parts large lowland rivers (potamon zone). The detailed overview of communities composition found in the investigated river basins with a review of taxonomic and ecological traits of individual species was presented.
The comparison of historical data and contemporary investigations shows there are
changes in habitat size and population dynamics of individual taxons. Significant reduction in the habitat size, i.e. complete retreat from the area where it used to be found earlier was determined for the species A. cygnea and lentic ecosystems can be marked as their refugium, such as accumulations, lakes, marsh and swamp regions in Serbia. Based on historical data, it was determined that U. crassus species used to be widespread and one of the most represented species in whole region of Serbia until mid-1970's. After that period, in the investigations carried out during last several decades, the decrease in the number of this population was observed, as well as only sporadic findings in a
limited area. The latest investigations indicate to a positive population trend of this species, especially in the Sava river basin.
The invastigation of relations among present species based on physical and chemical characteristics of water in analyzed localities has shown that the most important physical and chemical parameters are as follows: Calcium concentration, total water hardness, BPK5, HPK, nitrate concentration and ammonium ion concentration.
The results of canonical correspondence analysis indicate to an expectedly higher
sensitivity of species U. crassus to BPK, HPK, nitrates and ammonium ion concentration, i.e. greater tolerance of species A. anatina to the above listed factors. The parameters with the most significant influence on freshwater mussels community among the group of heavy metals are the concentrations of copper, lead and cadmium in water. The results of canonical correspondence analysis indicate to an increased sensitivity of species U. crassus to these factors, while a greater tolerance of species A. anatina to these factors was recorded.
Using geometric morphometrics method, the size and shape variability of shell left
valva of different contemporary shell populations samples were analized, as well as the specimens belonging to museum samples. Geometric morphometrics analysis of recent samples confirms the existence of statistically significant ntrapopulation differences in size and shape variability of morphological structures. Morphological structures variability analysis of museum samples, applying the geometric morphometrics method, does not confirm the existence of significant differences within variability of size and shape of various
varieties, except in the case of U. tumidus.
Using shell variability analysis based on nine linear characters, applying the traditional morphometric approach, the existence of intrapopulation differences was determined, as well as a similar trend of deviations like in geometric morphometrics analysis.
Applying the modified model ESHIPPO-PD, the risk of extinction and the priority of
conservation on a local level were determined for the analized species. The first level of protection priority was determined for U. crassus, P. comlanata and A. cygnea, i.e. high extinction risk at local level. A moderate risk (the second level of conservation priority) was estimated for species U. pictorum and A. anatina, while the extiction risk is lower for U.
tumidus (the third level of protection priority). The analysis of element included in model ES+HIPPO+PD, singles out the factor of greatest influence on endangeredness of given species.

najznačajnijih i široko rasprostranjenih komponenata vodenih ekosistema kopnenih
voda.
zajednica. Raznovrsnost i rasprostranjenje unionida, do sada, nije adekvatno proučeno
populacija.
Ciljevi ovog istraživanja bili su: pregled ukupnog broja vrsta u Srbiji;
analiza strukture i dinamike populacija unionida; definisanje odnosa vrsta i
najznačajnijih parametara okruženja; analiza morfološke varijabilnosti različitih
populacija, primenom metoda geometrijske i tradicionalne morfometrije i kao
nacionalnih i međunarodnih projekata u periodu 2001.-2013. godina. Osim
