AB  - Simple Summary: Rana temporaria is one of the most widespread Palearctic brown frogs, with two
main genetic clades in Europe, geographic spatial pattern of which is insufficiently known. We
analyzed samples from the understudied western and central Balkans to evaluate the haplotype
diversity of widely used 16SrRNA and MT-CYTB mitochondrial gene sequences and to recognize
the contour of a possible contact zone between the main clades. The results revealed a suture
zone between theWestern and Eastern Clades in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. Overall,
haplotype diversity in the western and central Balkans sample is high. Harboring both main genetic
clades of R. temporaria qualifies the Balkan Peninsula as another important center of species’ genetic
diversity, as well as rich in unique haplotypes.

AB  - Pinus peuce (Macedonian pine) is considered a valuable ornamental tree that is frequently planted in parks and gardens, especially in Western Europe. This endemic pine is one of the most valuable conifer species in its native range, which currently consists of only two disjunct populations restricted to small mountainous areas of the Balkans and is listed as a near-threatened species. The reproduction of Macedonian pine by seed is limited, so in vitro propagation methods have emerged as a promising tool for large-scale propagation. The objective of this study was to develop an improved system for the micropropagation of P. peuce from juvenile plant material using a short-term liquid cytokinin pulse. For that, explants derived from 4-week-old seedlings were pulse-treated with different concentrations of N6-benzyladenine (BA) for 1 or 2 h to stimulate the induction of axillary buds. The highest axillary shoot formation was achieved with 222 µM BA pulse treatment, with an average number of ~six shoots per explant. Elongated shoots (≥10 mm) were detached from the explants and pulse-treated with 0.27 or 1.08 mM α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) or 0.25 or 0.98 mM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) for 1 or 2 h. IBA was more effective than NAA and led to a maximum rooting percentage (up to 40%) and the highest number of acclimatized plants (15–20%). Rooted plants were successfully transferred to ex vitro conditions.

AB  - In the present study, we investigated in vitro the antimicrobial activity of the pygidial gland secretion of the guanophilic ground beetle Laemostenus (Pristonychus) punctatus (Dejean, 1828) and some of its chemicals against resistant and non-resistant bacteria and Candida species, the synergistic and additive potential of combinations of selected chemicals and antimicrobial drugs against resistant bacterial and fungal strains, anti-adhesive and anti-invasive potential of the secretion and formic acid alone and in selected combinations with antimicrobial drugs against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) toward spontaneously immortalized human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT cells). In addition, we examined the antiproliferative activity of the secretion and formic acid in vitro. The tested secretion and the standards of formic and oleic acids possessed a significant level of antimicrobial potential against all tested strains (P < 0.05). The isolate from guano Pseudomonas monteilii showed the highest resistance to the secretion and formic acid, while MRSA achieved a significantly high level of susceptibility to all agents tested, particularly to the combinations of formic acid and antibiotics, but at the same time showed a certain level of resistance to the antibiotics tested individually. Candida albicans and C. tropicalis were found to be the most sensitive fungal strains to the secretion. Formic acid (MIC 0.0005 mg/mL) and gentamicin (MIC 0.0010 mg/mL) in the mixture achieved synergistic antibacterial activity against MRSA (FICI = 0.5, P < 0.05). The combination of formic acid, gentamicin and ampicillin accomplished an additive effect against this resistant bacterial strain (FICI = 1.5, P < 0.05). The secretion achieved a better inhibitory effect on the adhesion ability of MRSA toward HaCaT cells compared to formic acid alone, while formic acid showed better results regarding the invasion (P < 0.001). The combinations of gentamicin and ampicillin, as well as of formic acid and gentamicin and ampicillin achieved similar anti-adhesive and anti-invasive effects, with a slight advantage of formic acid and antibiotics in combination (P < 0.001). The secretion and formic acid were found to be non-toxic to HaCaT cells in vitro (IC50 ≥ 401 μg/mL).

AB  - The problem of global amphibian declines has prompted extensive research over the last three decades. Initially, the focus was on identifying and characterizing the extent of the problem, but more recently efforts have shifted to evidence-based research designed to identify best solutions and to improve conservation outcomes. Despite extensive accumulation of knowledge on amphibian declines, there remain knowledge gaps and disconnects between science and action that hamper our ability to advance conservation efforts. Using input from participants at the ninth World Congress of Herpetology, a U.S. Geological Survey Powell Center symposium, amphibian on-line forums for discussion, the International Union for Conservation of Nature Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Gamete Biobanking group, and respondents to a survey, we developed a list of 25 priority research questions for amphibian conservation at this stage of the Anthropocene. We identified amphibian conservation research priorities while accounting for expected tradeoffs in geographic scope, costs, and the taxonomic breadth of research needs. We aimed to solicit views from individuals rather than organizations while acknowledging inequities in participation. Emerging research priorities (i.e., those under-represented in recently published amphibian conservation literature) were identified, and included the effects of climate change, community-level (rather than single species-level) drivers of declines, methodological improvements for research and monitoring, genomics, and effects of land-use change. Improved inclusion of under-represented members of the amphibian conservation community was also identified as a priority. These research needs represent critical knowledge gaps for amphibian conservation although filling these gaps may not be necessary for many conservation actions.

Body size and body condition in Vipera ammodytes: effects of sex and populations.

AB  - Snakes are ecologically and morphologically plastic organisms that exhibit extensive variations in body size and body condition
in response to environmental factors. Documenting inter-population variations is important to describe species comprehensively
across their distribution range and to monitor trends over time (e.g. decreasing body condition due to alteration of habitat). Thus, we
analyzed the influence of population and sex on body size and body condition in three populations of nose-horned vipers (Vipera
ammodytes) in Serbia. In one population, males were larger than females (F1, 39=4.802, p=0.034), but not in the two other populations
(F1, 36=0.075, p=0.786; F1, 21=0.018, p=0.893). Females exhibited higher body condition (residual values from the regression of
log-body mass against log-body size) than males (F1, 90=10.444, p=0.002); this sex difference was not found in one population when
analyzed separately (F1, 35=1.834, p=0.184). Moreover, we found strong inter-population differences in mean body size and mean
body condition (F2, 96=8.822, p<0.001 and F2, 90=10.319, p=0.001, respectively). While inter-population difference in body size was
driven by males, inter-population difference in body condition was driven by females. These results suggest that, in this species, body
size might be an important determinant of mating success in males, while body condition may play a major role in female fecundity.

AB  - In the last few decades, industrial pollution has gained extensive attention in terms of its effect on the aquatic environment. This imposes the need to develop sensitive biomarkers for early detection of pollutant toxicity in ecotoxicological assessment. The advantages of histopathological biomarkers are many, including quick reaction to the presence of contaminants, and the small number of individuals needed for efficient analysis. The present study analyzed the negative effect of lignite coal fly ash (LCFA) and microplastic particles (MPs) on Chironomus riparius, a suggested model organism by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This study aimed to perform histological analyses of larval tissues and target potential changes in treated groups that could serve as promising histopathological biomarkers of the contaminant's negative effects. Following that, other known sensitive sub-organismal biomarkers were analyzed and paired with the histopathological ones. Histological analysis of larvae showed a significantly decreased length of microvilli in midgut regions II and III in both treatments. Treatments with MPs affected oxidative stress parameters: thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and hemoglobin levels, while LCFA significantly affected all tested sub-organismal biomarkers (DNA damage, levels of AOPP, SOD, and hemoglobin), except catalase (CAT) and TBARS. When observing histological slides, a significant shortage of brush border length in the posterior parts of the midgut was detected in all treatments. In the case of LCFA, the appearance of intensive vacuolization of digestive cells with inclusions resembling apoptotic bodies, in mentioned regions was also detected. This study demonstrated high sensitivity of brush border length to the MPs and LCFA exposure, complementary to other tested sub-organismal biomarkers. Revealing the great potential of this histopathological biomarker in ecotoxicological studies contributes to the international standard ecotoxicology assessment of emerging pollutants.

AB  - The smooth snake Coronella austriaca (Laurenti, 1768) is distributed across the western Palearctic throughout north-central, southern Europe and western Asia. So far, only few phylogenetic studies, based on mitochondrial DNA, have been carried out on this species focusing mainly on the Iberian Peninsula and northern Europe, leaving unstudied some of important areas of its distribution. This study aims to cover this gap and to explore the phylogenetic relationships between the populations of in the Eastern Mediterranean and to detect possible historical refugia. With this objective, total genomic DNA was extracted from samples originated from the Balkans, Anatolia and a large part of Europe. Two mitochondrial (cyt b, 16S) and six nuclear (BDNF, NKTR, RAG1, RAG2, MC1R and PRLR) markers were combined for phylogenetic and chronophylogenetic analyses. The different analyses confirmed previous phylogeographic hypothesis showing the presence of several well-supported clades distributed in Anatolia, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, the Balkans and the Iberian Peninsula and cryptic diversity within Anatolia and the Balkans. Moreover, dating analysis confirmed the diversification of the species during the Pleistocene, as well as the role of the Southern Balkans and Anatolia region as refugia during this period.

AB  - The Meadow and Steppe viper, Vipera ursinii-renardi complex is a well-studied group that is divided into several morphological subspecies. In this study, we combine the analyses of two mitochondrial genes with 9 microsatellite markers to compare both phylogenetic signals. Whereas the signal is similar between both genomes within most subspecies, the relative relationships between subspecies are more differentiated. Moreover, the nuclear phylogenetic reconstruction supports genetic homogeneity within V. u. macrops (in contrast to mtDNA). Both genetic portions show an unexpected differentiation between a population from Bistra Mountain and other V. u. macrops populations. Globally, the microsatellite markers suggest high genetic diversity in most subspecies, even in V. u. rakosiensis which is highly threatened; only V. u. macrops showed a limited genetic diversity. Within lowland subspecies, the differentiation between populations is globally limited compared to the distance between them (except in some populations of V. u. moldavica ). The limited differentiation might be the consequence of a recent isolation (few decades) of previously large populations. Nevertheless, the only way to maintain this genetic diversity and to avoid an increase in genetic differentiation between populations in the future is to recreate suitable habitats and reconnect the populations.

AB  - In this study we have reported the chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from the needles of twelve Pinus taxa, belonging to the subgenera Pinus (sections Pinus and Trifoliae) and Strobus (sect. Quinquefoliae). Monoterpenes dominated over sesquiterpenes in most of the investigated taxa of both subgenera, except in representatives of the subsection Pinaster, subgenus Pinus. alpha-Pinene was the most abundant terpene in eight pines, but other dominant terpenes were found in some taxa -trans-caryophyllene, germacrene D, abietadiene and beta-pinene. In the subsect. Pinaster, the most dominant compounds varied from species to species. In addition, P. halepensis and P. pinaster had the highest percentage of diterpenes, while P. heldreichii was the richest in germacrene D. In the PCA and cluster analyses, three species from the subsect. Pinaster emerged as the most distant: P. halepensis, P. pinaster, and P. heldreichii. In addition, the possible taxonomic implications of the terpene profile in the analysed Pinus taxa were also discussed.

U većini istraživanih taksona monoterpeni dominiraju nad seskviterpenima kod oba podroda, osim kod uzoraka podsekcije Pinaster podroda Pinus. α-Pinen je najobilniji kod 8 borova, ali kod nekih taksona dominantni su trans-kariofilen, germakren D, abietadien i β-pinen. AB  - Insular populations offer excellent opportunities to study the factors that influence phenotypes. We observed island dwarfism in a widespread snake, the nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes). Island vipers were ~20% smaller than mainland individuals. They also produced fewer and smaller offspring. In snakes, food availability has a positive influence on body size, fecundity and offspring size. Consequently, low energy intake is a plausible explanation for insular dwarfism. The diet of island vipers was principally represented by lizards and centipedes, whereas the most profitable prey items (e.g. rodents) were regularly found in the stomach of mainland vipers. Furthermore, the proportion of individuals captured with a full stomach and good body condition were lower on the island compared with the mainland. Thus, island vipers were likely to be experiencing permanent energy restriction, with cascading effects on adult body size and reproductive output. Large prey promotes high relative jaw length in snakes. Island
vipers displayed smaller relative jaw length compared with mainland populations, suggesting that plasticity played a role in insular dwarfism. But the difference in relative tail length between island and mainland populations, a trait not subjected to food-induced plasticity, indicates local adaptation. Both plasticity and adaptation might influence the phenotype of island vipers.

AB  - Clinopodium pulegium (Rochel) Bräuchler (Lamiaceae) is an endangered species endemic to the Southern Carpathians. It is characterized by the production of high amounts of essential oils, which emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that have an essential role in biotic and abiotic stress responses and in plant-plant and plant-insect interactions. The present study was initiated to phytochemically examine the influence of different carbon sources in the nutrition medium on VOC emissions of micropropagated C. pulegium plants, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of headspace VOCs. The volatile profiles were subjected to multivariate analysis with respect to the presence, concentration and type of carbon source in the nutrient medium. In addition, the effect of different carbohydrates on the density and size of the leaf glandular trichomes, the main structures involved in the emission of VOCs, was determined. A total of 19 VOCs, primarily belonging to mono- and sesquiterpenes previously described in plants, were tentatively identified. Six VOCs were produced at levels higher than 2% of the total VOC emission, dominated by pulegone, ß-pinene and menthone. Inclusion of the carbohydrates in the culture media affected the production of the main leaf trichome-associated volatile allelochemicals although the qualitative composition of the volatiles changed only slightly. Multivariate analysis showed that the concentration, rather than the carbohydrate type, influenced the VOC profile.

to synthesize, secrete or store large amounts of specialized metabolites that
play a crucial role in mediating the plant–environment interactions. These
compounds often have marked bioactive properties, rendering a commercial
value to the plants that produce them. A number of biological effects have
been associated with the main monoterpenoids detected in investigated
Micromeria spp. and Clinopodium spp. essential oils. One alternative for the
production of these bioactive metabolites is in vitro plant tissue culture. The
present study was initiated to investigate the effects of in vitro culture on
the secretion of leaf glandular trichomes, the main structures involved in the
essential oil production. The glandular indumentum was studied by means of
light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy in an attempt to correlate
the phytochemical traits with the glandular trichome morphotypes of selected
Lamiaceae species.

Our data suggest that the metabolic potential of in vitro shoot cultures of selected species can be manipulated by varying in vitro culture conditions.

AB  - Clinopodium thymifolium (Scop.) Kuntze (syn. Micromeria thymifolia (Scop.) Fritsch) is a Balkan endemic species, traditionally used as a condiment and medicinal plant in the Mediterranean area. Clinopodium species were shown to produce considerable quantities (> 0.5%) of essential oils. The essential oil of wild-growing C. thymifolium possesses high antimicrobial activity. One alternative for the production of commercially important plant-derived metabolites, especially of rare plant genotypes, is in vitro plant tissue culture, given that the metabolic potential of in vitro shoot cultures can be manipulated by varying in vitro culture conditions. In view of the potential pharmacological and commercial value of C. thymifolium, the present study was initiated to propagate this aromatic plant species with the aim to increase the accumulation of biomass and the production of secondary metabolites. Shoots of wild-growing plants, dissected into one-node stem segments bearing two axillary buds, were used to establish in vitro cultures. Shoot multiplication was carried out on basal nutritional medium and on medium supplemented with various plant growth regulators at different concentrations. Nodal segments developed axillary shoots, and were successfully propagated on basal medium, whereas tested plant growth regulators differently affected their multiplication and biomass production.

AB  - In this paper, the updated checklist of Serbian amphibians and reptiles is
presented. The updated checklist of Serbian amphibians and reptiles was compiled
from the literature on distribution, taxonomy and phylogeny. The checklist
contains 48 autochthonous and two introduced species. Five species underwent
taxonomic revisions (Triturus ivanbureschi, T. macedonicus, Pelobates balcanicus,
Bufotes viridis and Mediodactylus kotschyi). Two species were added after recent
taxonomic splits of species’ complexes (Hyla orientalis and Anguis colchica).
Presence of new (Lacerta trilineata) and introduced species (Hemidactylus turcicus)
was confirmed during recent fieldwork. There are at least eight more species
that can potentially be present in Serbia. The national protection legislative should
be updated according to the current checklist.
AB  - У овом раду приказујемо ажурирану листу фауне водоземаца и
гмизаваца у Србији. Листа је састављена на основу литературе о
дистрибуцији, таксономији и филогенији водоземаца и гмизаваца који
припадају нашој фауни. Садржи 48 врста аутохтоних за Републику
Србију као и две интродуковане врсте за које је потврђено да се на
територији Србије размножавају и успостављају популације. Пет
врста на овој листи су недавно прошле кроз таксономску ревизију
(Triturus ivanbureschi, T. macedonicus, Pelobates balcanicus, Bufotes
viridis и Mediodactylus kotschyi), а две врсте су придодате након
скорашњег таксономског раздвајања комплекса врста (Hyla orientalis и
Anguis colchica). Најновија теренска истраживања су потврдила при-
суство једне нове (Lacerta trilineata) и једне интродуковане врсте
(Hemidactylus turcicus). Потенцијално је на територији Репубике Срби-
је присутно још најмање осам врста водоземаца и гмизаваца, пре свега
у пограничним областима. Од 48 врста аутохтоних за Републику
Србију, седам су рањиве/готово угрожене на међународном нивоу,
према критеријумима IUCN, три су у прилозима CITES-а, 39 се налазе
на анексима Директиве о стаништима (Habitat Directive), а све су на
прилозима Бернске конвенције. У току је процена конзервационог
статуса свих врста на националном нивоу, на основу чега ће бити
предложена нова легислатива.
Са 48 врста, Србија се може сматрати за богату биолошком
разноврсношћу водоземаца и гмизаваца па чак и центром диверзитета
појединих таксона – пре свега великих мрмољака и других комплекса
врста (Hyla, Pelophylax, Anguis). Даља истраживања батрахо- и херпе-
тофауне требало би концентрисати на контактне/хибридне зоне
комплекса врста и пограничне области наше земље.

AB  - We present the updated distribution data of the Hyla arborea species complex
in Serbia. Hyla arborea inhabits all biogeographic regions, while Hyla orientalis
inhabits only the easternmost parts of north-eastern, eastern and south-eastern
Serbia. Potential hybrid zone encompasses parts of central and southern Serbia
from the Đerdap gorge, over Niš to Bosilegrad. Since the taxonomic separation between the tree frog taxa was not yet recognized in national nomenclature, we
propose the official Serbian names. The species H. arborea will keep the standard
Serbian name “Gatalinka”, while for the species H. orientalis we propose the name
“Istočna gatalinka”.
AB  - У овом раду, приказујемо ажуриране податке о дистрибуцији
комплекса врста Hyla arborea у Србији. Подаци се састоје од налаза
објављених у литератури или на Интернету, заједно са претходно
необјављеним теренским подацима. Од ове две врсте, највећи део
територије Србије, укључујући све биогеографске регионе, насељава
H. arborea. Hyla orientalis, са друге стране, насељава само крајње
источне делове североисточне, источне и југоисточне Србије, са
потенцијалном хибридном зоном која такође обухвата делове централ-
не и јужне Србије. Дистрибуција H. arborea је густа у панонским
деловима Србије, конкретно у плавним зонама река Дунав, Сава и
Тиса, док је дистрибуција више раштркана у перипанонским и
планинско-котлинским деловима Србије. Hyla orientalis насељава
искључиво најисточније делове планинско-котлинског региона, где је
повезана са воденим системима који припадају Балканском планин-
ском венцу, док Карпатски и Родопски масиви представљају северо-
источну и југоисточну границу дистрибуције, респективно. За хибрид-
ну зону се претпоставља да обухвата оквирно 30 км широк коридор
који се протеже од Ђердапске клисуре, преко Ниша до Босилеграда,
али додатно узорковање ће морати да се изврши како би се ово
потврдило.
Пошто таксономско раздвајање између криптичних врста гаталин-
ки још увек није препознато у нашој националној номенклатури, овај
рад предлаже званичне српске називе за ове врсте. Номинална врста
H. arborea ће задржати стандардни српски назив „гаталинка“, док за
врсту H. orientalis предлажемо име „источна гаталинка“.

The Importance of Small Water Bodies’ Conservation for Maintaining Local Amphibian Diversity in the Western Balkans

AB  - In these times of aggressive and enormous anthropogenic alterations of freshwater aquatic habitats throughout the Western Balkans, including drying out, pollution or the introduction of invasive species, the value of small water bodies (SWB) as refugia for local amphibians is clearly increasing. A network of SWB could be crucial for the conservation of local amphibian richness, if this network is properly maintained and monitored. Together, countries of the Western Balkan harbor 29 amphibian species and only one of these species does not use SWB. Almost all those countries share the same challenges—drainage, technical flood protection measures, channelization, planned small dam construction, agriculture, deforestation, pollution, road construction and decrease of aquifers. The conservation of SWB in the region is related to the socio-economic status of the people i.e. to the stimulation of local stakeholders to continue with the traditional practices of agriculture and animal husbandry, including maintenance of SWB, and to their continuous education on importance of SWB for preservation of high values of local biodiversity.

AB  - Hydropower plants (HPPs) have a strong environmental impact on freshwater wetlands. Small diversion HPPs (SDHPPs) with 0.1–10 MW of installed power, redirect water from small mountainous rivers into several-kilometer-long tubes, disrupting complex dynamics of local aquatic food webs and their interactions with neighbor terrestrial food webs. It certainly affects local aquatic communities, but it is often neglected that two highly threatened vertebrate groups—amphibians and reptiles—which live in and around these wetlands, could be affected as well. In the Balkan peninsula, a part of Southeastern Europe, SDHPPs recently became very attractive and profitable for potential investors after they were proclaimed as eligible for subsidies from the national budget. As a result, in year 2020, the maximal projected number of SHPPs in the Balkans increased to 4,556. According to the literature data, ~28% of amphibian species in the Balkan Peninsula use small rivers and streams in the upper parts of watersheds as feeding, breeding and/or nursery habitats. Additionally, 38% of the total number of reptile species in Europe are registered in the hilly/mountainous areas of the peninsula, and 33% of these species strictly need humid habitats. The attempt of this mini-review is to present the facts which show that SHPPs and DSHPPs, in the way they are currently being installed, present harmful energy solution for the biodiversity of the mountain parts of Balkan peninsula, particularly for local amphibian and reptile populations which rely on lotic aquatic ecosystems and/or humid terrestrial habitats.

According to the literature data, ~28% of amphibian species in the Balkan Peninsula use small rivers and streams in the upper parts of watersheds as feeding, breeding and/or nursery habitats. Additionally, 38% of the total number of reptile species in Europe are registered in the hilly/mountainous areas of the peninsula, and 33% of these species strictly need humid habitats. The attempt of this mini-review is to present the facts which show that SHPPs and DSHPPs, in the way they are currently being installed, present harmful energy solution for the biodiversity of the mountain parts of Balkan peninsula, particularly for local amphibian and reptile populations which rely on lotic aquatic ecosystems and/or humid terrestrial habitats.",

The total number of taxa that colonized the microcosms was 22 (17 in the control and 18 in the microplastic treatment), and the colonization was not affected by the treatment. The most dominant group within the macroinvertebrate community was the dipteran family Chironomidae, in both the control and the microplastic treatment. No significant differences in the abundance and biomass at a community level were recorded between the groups by permutational multivariate analysis of variance (F = 0.993, p = 0.456 and F = 0.344, p = 0.797, respectively). The mixture of microplastics did not influence the abundance or biomass of the functional feeding groups (F = 1.810, p = 0.137 and F = 0.377, p = 0.736, respectively). The species richness, species abundance, species biomass, Shannon's diversity index, and Simpson's index of diversity showed no statistically significant differences between the control and treatment groups. AB  - The slow-worm lizards ( Anguis ) comprise five species occurring throughout most of the Western Palearctic. Although these species are relatively uniform morphologically – with the exception of A. cephallonica , which exhibits a quite unique morphology – they are genetically deeply divergent. Here, we provide detailed distribution maps for each species and discuss their biogeography and conservation based on updated genetic data and a robust distribution database. We pay particular attention to the so called ‘grey zone’, which typically represents secondary contact zones and in some cases confirmed or presumed hybrid zones. Four of the five species live in parapatry, while only two species, A. cephallonica and A. graeca from the southern Balkans occur in partial sympatry. Further research should focus on the eco-evolutionary interactions between species in contact, including their hybridization rates, to reveal deeper details of the slow-worm evolutionary and natural history.

AB  - The variability of volatiles isolated from twigs by the static headspace (HS) method in seven natural populations of Picea omorika from Serbia was investigated for the first time. In the overall chemical profile, monoterpenes strongly dominated hydrocarbons as the most volatile compounds (95.7%). The dominant compounds were ?-pinene (29.5 %), ?-pinene (25.7%) and myrcene (13.0%), totaling 68.2% of the volatiles on average. The following nine volatiles were found to be present in medium-to-high amounts (0.5-10%): tricyclene, camphene, ?-phellandrene, ?-3-carene, p-cymene, ?-phellandrene, terpinolene, (E)-caryophyllene, and germacrene D. Out of the 78 volatiles detected, the six most abundant (?-pinene, ?-pinene, myrcene, ?-3-carene, ?-phellandrene and camphene) were selected for principle component analysis (PCA) and cluster analyses (CA). PCA revealed a high degree of similarity between populations, while CA showed a degree of separation of two populations from the others. The presented results are in agreement with previous phytochemical and molecular analyses of this species that confirm high variability in both specialized metabolites and genetic markers.

abstract = "The variability of volatiles isolated from twigs by the static headspace (HS) method in seven natural populations of Picea omorika from Serbia was investigated for the first time. In the overall chemical profile, monoterpenes strongly dominated hydrocarbons as the most volatile compounds (95.7%). The dominant compounds were ?-pinene (29.5 %), ?-pinene (25.7%) and myrcene (13.0%), totaling 68.2% of the volatiles on average. The following nine volatiles were found to be present in medium-to-high amounts (0.5-10%): tricyclene, camphene, ?-phellandrene, ?-3-carene, p-cymene, ?-phellandrene, terpinolene, (E)-caryophyllene, and germacrene D. Out of the 78 volatiles detected, the six most abundant (?-pinene, ?-pinene, myrcene, ?-3-carene, ?-phellandrene and camphene) were selected for principle component analysis (PCA) and cluster analyses (CA). PCA revealed a high degree of similarity between populations, while CA showed a degree of separation of two populations from the others. The presented results are in agreement with previous phytochemical and molecular analyses of this species that confirm high variability in both specialized metabolites and genetic markers.",
