The first sheet named 'RDC' contains data on relative deterrence coefficients of spongy moth larvae exposed to three different concentrations of Calocedrus decurrens and Cupressus arizonica essential oils. The second sheet named 'ADC' contains data on absolute deterrence coefficients of spongy moth larvae exposed to three different concentrations of Calocedrus decurrens and Cupressus arizonica essential oils. The third sheet named 'RCR' contains data on the relative consumption rate of spongy moth larvae exposed to three different concentrations of Calocedrus decurrens and Cupressus arizonica essential oils, and control treatment. AB  - Food spoilage is a widely neglected problem and the constant use of synthetic fungicides could develop resistant fungi. The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Tetradenia riparia leaf essential oil against foodborne disease microorganisms. Leaf essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The antimicrobial activity was studied by broth microdilution. The major compounds identified were oxygenated sesquiterpenes (43.6%): 14-hydroxy-9-epi-(E)-cariophylene (20.8%) and τ-cadinol (18.4%); followed by oxygenated diterpenes (24.6%): 6,7-dehydroroyleanone (12.6%) and 9β, 13β-epoxy-7-abiethene (10.6%); sesquiterpenic hydrocarbons (17.1%) and oxygenated monoterpenes (7.4%): fenchone (5.6%). The essential oil had broad antibacterial and antifungal activity, mainly against A. versicolor and P. ochrochloron with fungistatic and fungicidal activities and B. cereus, L. monocytogenes, and S. aureus with bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities. T. riparia leaf essential oil is a potential alternative to control microorganisms.

AB  - Euphorbia seguieriana ssp. seguieriana Necker (ES) and Euphorbia cyparissias (EC) with a habitat in the Deliblato Sands were the subject of this examination. The latexes of these so far insufficiently investigated species of the Euphorbia genus are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of wounds and warts on the skin. To determine their chemical composition, non-targeted screening of the latexes' chloroform extracts was performed using liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry employing an electrospray ionization source (LC-ESI QTOF MS). The analysis of the obtained results showed that the latexes of ES and EC represent rich sources of diterpenes, tentatively identified as jatrophanes, ingenanes, tiglianes, myrsinanes, premyrsinanes, and others. Examination of the anticancer activity of the ES and EC latex extracts showed that both extracts significantly inhibited the growth of the non-small cell lung carcinoma NCI-H460 and glioblastoma U87 cell lines as well as of their corresponding multi-drug resistant (MDR) cell lines, NCI-H460/R and U87-TxR. The obtained results also revealed that the ES and EC extracts inhibited the function of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in MDR cancer cells, whose overexpression is one of the main mechanisms underlying MDR.

AB  - Cistus creticus subsp. creticus is a shrubby Mediterranean plant used since ancient times in folk medicine for the treatment of different diseases. C. creticus extracts and resin contain different types of secondary metabolites , such as terpenoids (predominantly labdane type diterpenoids), and phenylpropanoids. Growth conditions seem to influence the content of labdane-type diterpenes and flavan-3-ols in leaves of C. creticus subsp. creticus . Histochemical staining of leaves' trichomes and comprehensive phytochemical characterization of resin, leaves and their exudates, indicated that long-stalked capitate trichomes of C. creticus subsp. creticus , grown both in vitro (IV) and in greenhouse (GH), are capable of producing bioactive oleoresin-related terpenoids and phenylpropanoids compounds. Bioactivity-guided approach was implemented in search for the major antibacterial compound in C. creticus resin against two Gram-negative ( Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ) and two Gram-positive bacteria ( Bacillus cereus and Micrococcus flavus ). Bioautographic assay on TLC plates with separated components of Cistus resin extract, revealed a pronounced zone of microbial growth inhibition, corresponded to a highly active compound with Rf values of 0.45, structurally characterized and identified as ent -3 β -acetoxy-13- epi -manoyl oxide. This finding opens the route for focusing on isolation and functional characterization of genes involved in the biosynthesis of ent -3 β -acetoxy-13- epi -manoyl oxide and its precursor ent -3 β -hydroxy-13- epi -manoyl oxide, with the aim to establish sustainable in vitro biotechnological protocols for its large-scale production in homologous and heterologous plant and microbial hosts.

AB  - Quince and sweet cherry are two common edible fruit-producing trees of temperate regions of Euroasia. The phenolic profiles of juices from quince and sweet cherry fruit extracted by the cold-pressing were analyzed by Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC). Chromatographical results identified 31 phenolic compounds while quantified thirteen for fruit juices. The quantitative data indicate that the predominant phenolic was 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid in quince (8.343 mg L-1) and cherry juice (6.407 mg L-1). Total Flavonoids (TF), Total Phenolic Content (TPC), and Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) were also investigated. In both fruit juices, the TF values varied between 0.30-0.97 g L-1 (Catechin Equivalent) and TPC between 0.36 to 0.94 g L-1 (Gallic Acid Equivalent). AB  - Essential oils (EOs) obtained from plants can frequently exhibit toxicity and repellency/deterrence against insect pests. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) EOs are used in pest management applications, but the most-discussed constraint regards restraining the usage of these natural insecticides in common agricultural practices is related to the volatility and limited persistence of EOs under field conditions. Due to high volatility, the efficacy of these substances falls short after EO application and requires frequent reapplication. There is a great interest in developing formulations that improve the handling of EOs, prevent the photodegradation of their active ingredients, and control the release of volatiles through micro/nanospheres or capsules in solid or liquid form. The polymer-based EO nanoformulations provide the stability and optimal effectiveness of EOs with an anti-insecticidal effect. One of the main advantages of solid formulations is that they can have a longer shelf life and be applied in solid form or even mixed with water and sprayed. We investigated the formation and characterization of inclusion complexes (ICs) of beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with two selected EOs, using the co-precipitation method. The main constituents of EOs determined by GC-MS analyses were trans-anethole (37.77%) and α-pinene (23.51%) in fennel EO, and linalool (32.6%) and methyl chavicol (23.2%) in basil EO. The interaction between β-CD and EO molecules was assessed through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and it was used to characterize the ICs by evaluating the changes recorded in the ICs compared to the free β-CD and individual EO. FT-IR spectra of inclusion complexes displayed peak shifts and variations of intensity when it compared to FT-IR spectra of EOs and free β-CD. β-cyclodextrin resulted as an effective host in encapsulating selected EOs. The potato plants sprayed with ICs were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and showed ICs with lamellate or rhomboid morphology. Bioassay with Colorado potato beetle fed with potato plants covered with ICs showed that complexation with β-CD reduced insects’ growth (body mass of IV instar larvae where 119.84±1.48 mg and 120.79±7.42 mg for IC with fennel and basil EO respectively in comparison to body mass of control larvae 138.97±2.01mg) and affected digestive proteolytic activity.

AB  - Flower strips of French Marigold are commonly used pest repellents in potato fields. However, the effect of French Marigold volatiles on potato metabolism, physiology and induced defense is unknown. Thus, a microarray transcriptome analysis was performed to study the effects of French Marigold essential oil (EO) on laboratory-grown potato. After 8 h of exposure to EO, with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)-detected terpinolene and limonene as dominant compounds, 2796 transcripts were differentially expressed with fold change >2 compared to expression in controls. A slightly higher number of transcripts had suppressed expression (1493 down- vs. 1303 up-regulated). Since transcripts, annotated to different photosynthesis-related processes, were mostly down-regulated, we selected a set of 10 genes involved in the leaf starch metabolism pathway, and validated microarray patterns using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Except for decreased synthesis and induced decomposition of starch granule in leaves, 8 h long EO exposure slightly elevated the accumulation of sucrose compared to glucose and fructose in subjected potato plants. An in vitro feeding bioassay with Colorado potato beetle showed that EO-induced alternations on transcriptional level and in the sugars’ metabolism caused the enhancement of feeding behavior and overall development of the tested larvae. Results of comprehensive analysis of transcriptional responses in potato exposed to French Marigold EO provide a basis for further elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying eco-physiological interactions in companion planting cropping systems.

AB  - Bioactive compounds extracted from plants such as antimicrobials have attracted the attention of consumers and the food industry. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity and chemical composition of Annona muricata leaf oleoresin obtained by supercritical CO2 extraction. The oleoresin was obtained by supercritical CO2 extraction and the chemical identification by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by broth microdilution method against 14 foodborne fungi and bacteria. The oleoresin major chemical class was phytosterols (22.7%) and the major compounds were γ-sitosterol (15.7%), α-tocopherol (13.7%), phytol (13.1%), and hexadecanoic acid (11.5%). Minimum inhibitory concentration against bacteria ranged from 0.0025 to 0.010 mg mL-1. The oleoresin had high bactericidal activity against all bacteria, mainly Enterobacter cloacae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with 0.005 mg mL-1 minimum bactericidal concentration. However, it had low fungicidal activity. The leaf oleoresin of A. muricata has promising applications in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.

In vitro cultivation of tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.): a tool for the production of potent pharmaceutical agents

AB  - In this study, tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.) in vitro culture was established from seeds collected from natural populations. The multiplication of plantlets was conducted through shoot tips that exhibited potent apical growth and regeneration capacities on basal medium (BM), without the addition of any plant growth regulators (PGRs). PGRs were also omitted for the establishment and cultivation of tansy root cultures. Both abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces of in vitro micropropagated plantlets were covered with glandular biseriate trichomes. Histochemical staining showed that glandular secretions were rich in lipid and terpene compounds, confirmed by GC-MS analysis of essential oil (EO). In the total EO, similar portions of oxygenated monoterpenes (38.5% m/m) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (22.6% m/m) were detected. Chemical profiles of methanol extracts of in vitro cultured tansy shoots and roots varied in quantity and quality from those obtained from wild-growingtansy. HPLC analysis indicated that the methanol extracts of in vitro cultured roots were the richest in 3,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3,5-O-DCQA), in which the concentration was 6 times higher (10.220 mg/g DW) than that in the extract obtained from roots of wild-growing tansy (1.684 mg/g DW). This result is noticeable in the manner of industrial production of biologically active 3,5-O-DCQA that has been shown to have antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antiviral, antimutagenic, and immunomodulatory activity. Biotechnological interventions on secondary metabolite production taking place in trichomes could further enhance the production of some important tansy metabolites and further investigation will be directed toward the elucidation of the pharmaceutical potential of tansy in vitro obtained metabolites, as mixtures or single moieties.

AB  - The variability of n-alkanes in the needle cuticular wax of Pinus heldreichii and P. peuce in two natural populations from the Scardo-Pindic mountains was investigated for the first time. Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses of two-year-old needles were performed us-ing an Agilent 7890A GC equipped with an inert 5975C XL EI/CI mass spectrometer detector (MSD) and a flame ionization detector (FID) connected by a capillary flow technology 2-way splitter with make-up. An HP-5MS capillary column was used. n-Alkanes ranged from C19 to C33. In P. heldreichii the most abundant were C23, C25 and C27 (16.3, 15.6 and 12.8 % on average, respectively), while in P. peuce they were C29, C25, and C27 (16.5, 15.3 and 13.5 % on average, resp.). Mid-chain and long-chain n-alkanes prevailed in both species. Principle component analysis (PCA) and Cluster analyses of five and six n-alkanes, respectively, showed divergence of the Scardo-Pindic populations from the Dinaric ones.

In the overall chemical profile, monoterpenes strongly dominated hydrocarbons as the most volatile compounds (95.7%). The dominant compounds were ?-pinene (29.5 %), ?-pinene (25.7%) and myrcene (13.0%), totaling 68.2% of the volatiles on average. The following nine volatiles were found to be present in medium-to-high amounts (0.5-10%): tricyclene, camphene, ?-phellandrene, ?-3-carene, p-cymene, ?-phellandrene, terpinolene, (E)-caryophyllene, and germacrene D. Out of the 78 volatiles detected, the six most abundant (?-pinene, ?-pinene, myrcene, ?-3-carene, ?-phellandrene and camphene) were selected for principle component analysis (PCA) and cluster analyses (CA). PCA revealed a high degree of similarity between populations, while CA showed a degree of separation of two populations from the others. The presented results are in agreement with previous phytochemical and molecular analyses of this species that confirm high variability in both specialized metabolites and genetic markers.

In the plane of Axis 1 (PCA), P. strobus, P. mugo and P. wallichiana were strongly separated from P. heldreichii and P. pinea. In the plane of Axis 2, P. peuce, P. strobus and P. wallichiana as well as P. heldreichii and P. pinea diverged from other examined species. In DA, P. heldreichii, P. strobus, P. peuce and P. wallichiana diversed. CA divided sections Pinus and Pinaster from the section Strobi.

In six Pinus taxa (P. mugo, P. nigra ssp. dalmatica, P. sylvestris, P. pinea, P. strobus and P. wallichiana) carbon preference index and average chain length values were examined for the first time. In the plane of Axis 1 (PCA), P. strobus, P. mugo and P. wallichiana were strongly separated from P. heldreichii and P. pinea. In the plane of Axis 2, P. peuce, P. strobus and P. wallichiana as well as P. heldreichii and P. pinea diverged from other examined species. In DA, P. heldreichii, P. strobus, P. peuce and P. wallichiana diversed. CA divided sections Pinus and Pinaster from the section Strobi.",

AB  - Helichrysum plicatum DC. is widely used in folk medicine in treating a variety of health disorders. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of different extraction solvents on the chemical composition, antioxidant potential, and antimicrobial activities of H. plicatum. Aerial parts were separately extracted with ethanol, dichloromethane, and sunflower oil. The oil extract (OE) was re-extracted with acetonitrile. A total of 142 compounds were tentatively identified in ethanolic (EE), dichloromethane (DCME), and acetonitrile (ACNE) extracts using HPLC-DAD/ESI-ToF-MS. The dominant compound class in all extracts were α-pyrones, alongside flavonoids in EE, terpenoids in DCME and ACNE, and phloroglucinols in DCME. The antioxidant potential of the extracts was assessed by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) assay. EE and DCME possessed the most potent radical scavenging capacity. Antimicrobial activity was investigated on eight bacterial, two yeast, and one fungal species. All extracts exhibited high antifungal and notable antibacterial activities compared to control substances, with DCME being the most potent. DCME exhibited stronger antimicrobial activity against P. aeruginosa than the standard chloramphenicol.

AB  - In beetles, secretions are products of different exocrine glands, of which particular 
emphasis is on pygidial glands, which are common for the suborder Adephaga. 
Antimicrobial activity of the pygidial gland secretions of six selected ground beetle 
species was observed against human pathogens. A microdilution method was applied 
in order to determine minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), minimum bactericidal 
concentrations (MBCs) and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs). We tested 
16 laboratory and clinical strains of human pathogens (eight bacterial gram-positive 
and gram-negative species, and eight fungal species). The secretions of tested ground 
beetles have a certain level of antimicrobial activity, which differed between species, 
which is caused by the difference in chemical composition of the mixtures. The highest 
antibacterial effect was observed after treatment of most pathogens with secretion of 
Laemostenus punctatus and Carabus ullrichii. The highest resistance of tested pathogenic 
strains was noticed after treatment of the secretion of Calosoma sycophanta, which 
achieved antibacterial effect against E. coli only. The secretions of L. punctatus and C. 
sycophanta each showed a strong antifungal effect compared to positive controls. 
Inhibition of the proliferation of human tumor cell lines and porcine non-tumor 
cells by the secretion of adults of four ground beetle species was observed as well. 
The sulphorhodamine B (SRB) assay was applied to establish GI50 values of the tested 
secretions. All secretions have shown certain antiproliferative effect on the tested 
cell lines, but statistically insignificant in most cases, which confirms the absence of 
cytotoxicity on the non-tumor cell line. Special emphasis is put on the secretion of L. 
punctatus, which reached approximately 50% inhibition of cell proliferation (GI50 value) 
of MCF7 (breast adenocarcinoma) cell line, and showed a potential antitumour activity. 
The antimicrobial, antitumour and antiproliferative potential of the secretions of ground 
beetles was demonstrated for the first time in this study.

AB  - This study was performed to determine the main antibacterial com­po­unds of the essential oil (ЕО) of saltmarsh plant Artemisia santonicum (Aster­aceae). The combination of HPTLC and direct bioautography was used for the activity guided isolation of isogeranic acid as the main antibacterial constituent with remarkable antimicrobial activity, although it was the minor component of the EO, present only in 0.2 %, as calculated from GC/FID. Its structure was deter­mined by 1D- and 2D-NMR and GC–MS techniques. Antibacterial acti­vity of isogeranic acid against all tested bacteria was significantly higher than EO and even than both controls streptomycin and ampicillin. In further inves­tigation of antibiofilm and antiquorum sensing activity EO exhibited the best inhibition of the biofilm formation at 1/8 minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and iso­geranic acid at 1/2 MIC. Both EO and isogeranic acid possessed pyocyanin inhibitory activity showing the reduction of pigment at 60.6 and 62.8 %, res­pect­ively, at 1/2 MIC concentrations.

In addition, two known secondary metabolites, patuletin3 -O-β-d-apiofuranosyl-(1‴→2″)-β-d-glucopyranoside (5) and patuletin 3 -O-5‴- O-feruloyl-β-d-apiofuranosyl-(1‴→2″)-β-d-glucopyranoside (6), were isolated for the first time from A. tatarica. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, IR, and UV data. Antibacterial activity by the microdilution method and antibiofilm activity against P. aeruginosa were assessed. Compound 5 possesses significant antibacterial activity, while the most potent antibiofilm agent is compound 2.

AB  - The essential oil of Thymus algeriensis was analyzed as a potential preservative in soft cheese. We developed a novel method to test the preserving properties of essential oil in soft cheese. Contamination incidence of Penicillium aurantiogriseum was absent after 30 d of storage at 4°C with 25 µL of essential oil added. The antimicrobial activity was tested against 8 bacteria and 8 fungi. Thymus algeriensis oil showed inhibitory activity against tested bacteria at 0.03 to 0.09 mg/mL, and bactericidal activity was achieved at 0.05 to 0.15 mg/mL. For antifungal activity, minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged between 0.01 and 0.04 mg/mL and minimum fungicidal concentrations between 0.01 and 0.04 mg/mL. Furthermore, the oil was also screened for antiradical activity using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay. The results showed that the oil was active and achieved half-maximal inhibitory activity at 0.132 mg/mL. We used gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry to investigate the volatile compounds from the oil. Carvacrol was identified as the main compound in the oil, represented by 80.9% of the total constituents, followed by p-cymene (7.7%).

AB  - When attacked, plants activate defense mechanisms including volatile emission. Besides having
a pest repellent effect, volatiles can induce defense response in surrounding unharmed plants.
French marigold (Tagetes patula L.) essential oil (EO) was isolated from the above-ground parts
of plants collected from nature by hydrodistillation using Clevenger apparatus. GC/MS analysis
revealed the presence of 42 compounds, of which 97% (32 compounds) have been identified.
The monoterpene fraction was dominant (76.9%) with terpinolene (32.4%) and limonene (14.7%)
as the most abundant compounds. In order to investigate the potential of marigold EO to induce
the defense of potato, we analyzed 3 genes related to the induced resistance (IR): pathogenesis
related PR-2 and PR-5 genes, and proteinase inhibitor Pin2. The potato plants were exposed to EO
volatiles during 4, 8 and 12 h. Two leaves of EO-treated or untreated control plants were collected,
and plants were then additionally injured by mechanically wounding leaves across the leaf surface.
After 24 h of wounding, another two leaves from each plant were collected and expression
of the IR related genes was analyzed by qPCR method. EO induced altered expression of PR genes,
while Pin2 wasn’t affected by the treatment. Mechanical wounding increased the expression of
all genes after 4 and 8 h of EO treatment, with up to 4-fold change in PR-2. However, in plants
exposed to EO for 12 h before wounding, the level of transcription in PR-2 and Pin2 was similar to
that detected in untreated controls. These findings support the efforts for environmentally-safe
pest control in crops by using natural compounds.

AB  - The morphology and structure of tansy glandular trichomes were characterized for the first
time using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, and their secretion was analyzed
by histochemical staining. Leaf indumentum of tansy was covered with non-glandular and glandular trichomes of biseriate type, distributed on both adaxial and abaxial surface. Both types of
trichomes were also distributed along the stem, but with lower density. Light microscopy showed
that biseriate glandular trichomes consisted of two broad basal cells embedded in the epidermis,
a short single-celled stalk, and a large round multicellular head. The histochemical analysis of the
glandular secretion, performed through several staining methods, revealed the complex nature of
the secreted products, including lipids, terpenes, alkaloids and polysaccharides.
GC/MS phytochemical analysis of volatile compounds secreted by glandular trichomes, identified 42 compounds, representing >97% of the total volatiles in EO, obtained by hydrodistillation
in a Clevenger-type apparatus. The monoterpene fraction was dominant, with the prevalence of
oxygenated monoterpenes (38.5%), while the majority of sesquiterpene fraction referred to oxygenated sesquiterpenes (22.6%). Two dominant compounds, which determined the essential oil
chemotype, were trans-thujone (22.7%) and neryl-isovalerate (20.6%).
The essential oil protects the aerial parts of the plant against herbivores and pathogens and the
biological activity of the secreted products indicates their potential as pesticides or pharmaceuticals.

AB  - The reliability of diarylheptanoids as chemotaxonomic markers at inter- and intraspecific levels has been investigated. Six diarylheptanoids were quantified in bark ethanol extracts of four Alnus spp. populations by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The populations described here as locus classicus Alnus glutinosa (I) and locus classicus Alnus incana (III) are clearly differentiated. Compared to population I, individuals in population III have higher extract yields and hirsutanonol-5- O - β -D-glucopyranoside content and lower contents of hirsutanonol, rubranoside A and oregonin. Individuals from neighboring populations of A. glutinosa (II) and A. incana (IV) share similar contents of hirsutanonol. All the studied populations exhibit a high intrapopulation variability of the selected diarylheptanoids; they have a heterogeneous chemotype and they partially overlap. The geographical proximity of populations II and IV increases their chemical similarity. Principal component analysis (PCA) clearly shows that the biggest dispersion of individuals lies within population IV. The reason for its heterogeneity might be its physical proximity to population II, i.e. the appearance of hybrids. Also, geometric morphometrics of leaves was performed as a screening criterion for spontaneous hybrids.

Geographic variability of selected phenolic compounds in fresh berries of two Cornus species

AB  - The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical variability of Cornus mas and Cornus sanguinea on the basis of the content of six selected phenolic compounds in fruit extracts. Fruits were sampled at the time of full ripening, mid-September, from two localities that differed in terms of orographic and environmental conditions. Fresh fruit extracts were analyzed by LC–MS/MS to determine the presence and contents of neochlorogenic acid, quercitrin, isoquercetin, hyperoside, rutoside and querciturone. While all of the tested compounds were detected in both species, their content was several times higher in C. sanguinea. Locality-dependent differences were tested by appropriate statistical tests, which confirmed that the contents of all compounds significantly differed in C. mas, whereas the content of only one compound differed in C. sanguinea. Differences between populations were also revealed by PCA analyses. Both species showed clear separation of populations based on the analyzed phenolic compounds. The results showed that a specific environment can significantly affect the contents of certain secondary metabolites, as in the case of C. mas, and/or that the synthesis of these compounds can be to a lesser extent influenced by external factors, as in the case of C. sanguinea.

AB  - Brunfelsia genus is traditionally utilized in popular medicine due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties to name but a few. However, studies on the antimicrobial activity of Brunfelsia uniflora flower oleoresin have not been found yet. This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of B. uniflora flower oleoresin obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide. Oleoresin from the plant dried flowers was obtained by carbon dioxide, and the chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatographic-mass spectrometry. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of this oleoresin for seven bacteria and eight fungi were determined using 96-well microtiter plates. The oleoresin MBC for Bacillus cereus, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica, and Staphylococcus aureus ranged from 0.01 to 0.08 mg/mL, whereas the controls streptomycin and ampicillin varied from 0.1 and 0.5 mg/ mL. The oleoresin MFC for Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus ochraceus, Aspergillus versicolor, Penicillium funiculosum, Penicillium ochrochloron, Penicillium verrucosum var. cyclopium, and Trichoderma viride varied from 0.01 to 0.08 mg/mL, whereas the controls bifonazole and ketoconazole ranged from 0.2 to 3.5 mg/ mL. The oleoresin obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide presented bacteriostatic, bactericidal, fungistatic, and fungicidal activities that were higher than the positive controls streptomycin, ampicillin, bifonazole, and ketoconazole. The high antimicrobial activity was related to the high content of (E, E)-geranyllinalool that composes 21.0% of the oleoresin and a possible synergic action with fatty acid esters that made up 50.5% of the oleoresin. The oleoresin antimicrobial activity against common multiresistant bacteria in severe infectious processes as P. aeruginosa or against toxin-producing fungi such as P. ochrochloron or fungi that are difficult to control such as T. viride suggests the development of promising applications of this product in the food, farming, livestock, and pharmaceutical industry.

AB  - Recently, various insect secretions have been tested as possible antimicrobial agents. In beetles, these secretions are essentially products of various exocrine glands, of which particular emphasis is on pygidial glands that are common for the suborder Adephaga. The antimicrobial potential of the pygidial gland secretion isolated from the adults of Calosoma sycophanta against human pathogens has been tested and compared with the potential of other carabid species, particularly within the tribe Carabini. The antimicrobial assay includes a microdilution method which was applied in order to determine the minimal inhibitory, minimal fungicidal and minimal bactericidal concentrations. It has been tested the effect of the secretion against eight strains of fungal and eight strains of bacterial species. The secretion sample of the tested carabid species has shown statistically significant antifungal effect against all strains of treated micromycetes, the highest in comparison with previously tested carabids (Carabus spp., Laemostenus punctatus and Abax parallelepipedus). Aspergillus versicolor proved to be the most sensitive micromycete, while the remaining seven fungal strains have shown the same level of sensibility. In comparison with commercial mycotics ketoconazole and bifonazole, applied as positive controls, the tested secretion showed much higher antifungal activity for all fungal strains. Antibacterial effect has been manifested only against one bacterial strain (Escherichia coli), contrary to other previously studied carabid species. These observations might have a significant impact on the ecological domain and possible purpose in biomedical studies and applications in the future. Additionally, morpho-histology of the pygidial glands of C. sycophanta is investigated and discussed.
