AB - Without being aware of their chemical composition, many cultures have used herbaceous peony roots for medicinal purposes. Modern phytopreparations intended for use in human therapy require specific knowledge about the chemistry of peony roots and their biological activities. In this study, ethanol–water extracts were prepared by maceration and microwave- and ultrasound-assisted extractions (MAE and UAE, respectively) in order to obtain bioactive molecules from the roots of Paeonia tenuifolia L., Paeonia peregrina Mill., and Paeonia officinalis L. wild growing in Serbia. Chemical characterization; polyphenol and flavonoid content; antioxidant, multianti-enzymatic, and antibacterial activities of extracts; and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (GID) of hot water extracts were performed. The strongest anti-cholinesterase activity was observed in PT extracts. The highest anti-ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical potential was observed in PP extracts, whereas against DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals), the best results were achieved with PO extracts. Regarding antibacterial activity, extracts were strongly potent against Bacillus cereus. A molecular docking simulation was conducted to gather insights into the binding affinity and interactions of polyphenols and other Paeonia-specific molecules in the active sites of tested enzymes. In vitro GID of Paeonia teas showed a different recovery and behavior of the individual bioactives, with an increased recovery of methyl gallate and digallate and a decreased recovery of paeoniflorin and its derivatives. PT (Gulenovci) and PP (Pirot) extracts obtained by UAE and M were more efficient in the majority of the bioactivity assays. This study represents an initial step toward the possible application of Paeonia root extracts in pharmacy, medicine, and food technologies.

AB - A novel trimethyltin(IV) complex (Me3SnL), derived from 3-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolin-1(2H)-yl)propanoate ligand, has been synthesized and characterized by elemental microanalysis, UV/Vis spectrophotometry, FT-IR and multinuclear (1H, 13C and 119Sn) NMR spectroscopies. Furthermore, the structure of the ligand precursor HL was solved using SC-XRD (single-crystal X-ray diffraction). The prediction of UV/Vis and NMR spectra by quantum-chemical methods was performed and compared to experimental findings. The protein binding affinity of Me3SnL towards BSA was determined by spectrofluorometric titration and subsequent molecular docking simulations. Me3SnL has been evaluated for its in vitro anticancer activity against three human cell lines, MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), A375 (melanoma) and HCT116 (colorectal carcinoma), and three mouse tumor cell lines, 4T1 (breast carcinoma), B16 (melanoma) and CT26 (colon carcinoma), using MTT and CV assays. The strong inhibition of A375 cell proliferation, ROS/RNS upregulation and robust lipid peroxidation lead to autophagic cell death upon treatment with Me3SnL.

AB - Three new diphenyltin(IV) complexes, bis(3-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolinyl-1(2H)-yl)propanoato)diphenyltin(IV) (1), bis(2-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolin-1(2H)-yl)ethanoato)diphenyltin(IV) (2), and bis(2-(4-hydroxy-2-oxoquinolin-1(2H)-yl)ethanoato)diphenyltin(IV) (3), were synthesized and characterized by elemental microanalysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and multinuclear (1H, 13C and 119Sn) NMR spectroscopy. Crystal structure of ligand precursor, 3-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolinyl-1(2H)-yl)propanoic acid (HL1), has been determined by X-ray diffraction studies. Asymmetric bidentate coordination of the carboxylato ligands and skew trapezoidal structures are assumed for the synthesized complexes. In vitro anticancer activity of the synthesized diphenyltin(IV) complexes was evaluated against three human: MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), A375 (melanoma), HCT116 (colorectal carcinoma), and three mouse tumor cell lines: 4 T1 (breast carcinoma), B16 (melanoma), CT26 (colon carcinoma) using MTT and CV assays. The IC50 values fall in the range from 0.1 to 3.7 μM. Flow cytometric analysis and fluorescent microscopy suggest that complex 1 induces caspase-dependent apoptosis followed with strong blockade of cell division in HCT116 cells. Since complex 1 showed ROS/RNS scavenging potential mentioned cytotoxicity was not connected with oxidative stress.

AB - This study aimed to characterize mixtures of goat milk proteins and Agaricus blazei Murrill (ABM) extracts (aqueous, AE and polysaccharides, PE). The mixtures showed stable particles with ζ-potential more negative than −41.1 mV. The addition of AMB extracts to goat milk did not result in a significant particle size change, whereas their addition to heated goat milk significantly increased mean particle diameter (from 194 nm to 225 nm). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that ABM extracts provoked changes in the secondary structure of goat milk proteins and interactions between polysaccharides and milk proteins predominantly via hydrogen and/or glycoside bonds and hydrophobic interactions. The milk protein profiles revealed proteolytic activity in mixtures with AE resulting in the formation of five new polypeptides. The different microstructures of mixtures with AE and PE were found by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). A schematic representation of possible milk proteins-ABM extracts interactions has been given.

AB - Aeroponics is modern, soilless technology for potato cultivation that promotes the production
of a large number of healthy minitubers (pre-basic seed potatoes). In aeroponics, roots and underground
stems (stolons) of potato plants grow inside closed boxes (modules), suspended in the fine mist of a
nutrient solution that recirculates through the system. As a result, a significant number of tubers larger
than 1 cm can be formed on stolons during the growing period. The aim of this study was to evaluate
the effects of the genotype and origin of planting material on the production of minituber in an aeroponic
facility in Guča, Serbia. Our study encompassed three potato cultivars: Cleopatra, Kennebec and
Désirée, and two types of planting material: acclimated microplants and plants originated from the
previous season’s minitubers. Plants were aeroponically cultivated in the 2019 season (late May-
December) with a planting density of 24 plants per m2 and ~14-day harvest intervals. The largest
number of minitubers per plant (19.9) was recorded for cultivar Désirée, followed by the Kennebec
(15.7) and Cleopatra (11.1). The average mass of minitubers of all the cultivars under consideration
was significantly higher in the plants originating from minitubers than in plants of in vitro origin. The
highest yield of minitubers, 10.27 kg m-2, was recorded for Kennebec plants of minituber origin.
Besides, the plants originated from minitubers steadily tuberized during the entire cultivation period
in the aeroponic facility.

биљака in vitro порекла. Највећи принос миникртола, 10,27 kg m-2, установљен је код биљака
сорте Kennebec узгојених из миникртола. Поред тога, биљке пореклом из миникртола су постојано
формирале кртоле током читавог периода гајења у аеропонском систему.

abstract = "Aeroponics is modern, soilless technology for potato cultivation that promotes the production
of a large number of healthy minitubers (pre-basic seed potatoes).
Besides, the plants originated from minitubers steadily tuberized during the entire cultivation period
in the aeroponic facility., Аеропоника је савремена технологија гајења биљака без земље која омогућава ефикасну

AB - Aeroponics is eco-friendly, soilless technology for the cultivation of vegetable plants that can
be used for the production of pathogen-free pre-basic seed potato, namely minitubers. In
aeroponic modules, the underground parts of potato plants grow suspended in the mist of finely
dispersed nutrient solution to produce tubers, while the shoots grow above the module under
greenhouse conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the cultivar and origin of planting material on the minituber production in an aeroponic faility in Guča, Serbia. Two potato cultivars, Sinora and Agria, and two types of planting material, acclimated microplants
and plants originating from sprouted minitubers, were used in the study. Plants were grown in
the 2019 season with a planting density of 24 plants per m2 and ~14-day harvest intervals.
Agria plants of both plant origins steadily tuberized during most of the cultivation period and
formed a significantly larger number of minitubers (13.61) compared to cultivar Sinora (3.35),
which quickly completed the growth cycle. In both investigated cultivars, the mass of formed
minitubers was significantly higher in the plants originating from minitubers (18.80 g)
compared to plants of in vitro origin (9.04 g). Agria plants of minituber origin produced the
heaviest minitubers (19.05 g), while Sinora plants of in vitro origin formed the least heavy
tubers (5.29 g). The highest yield of minitubers, 6.26 kg m-2, was recorded for Agria plants of
minituber origin. The results of our study suggest that both plant origin and potato genotype
significantly affect minituber production in aeroponics.

AB - The aim of this study was to compile a detailed phytochemical profile and assess the antioxidant properties of bee-collected pollen (PBP) obtained from corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas L.) plants. To achieve this, a lipid fraction was prepared for quantifying fatty acids using GC-FID. Extractable and alkaline-hydrolysable PBP fractions (obtained from a defatted sample) were used to determine the qualitative and quantitative profiles of phenolic compounds, phenylamides and alkaloids using UHPLC/Q-ToF-MS. Additionally, various spectrophotometric assays (TAC, FRP, CUPRAC, DPPH⦁) were conducted to evaluate the antioxidant properties. Phenolic compounds were more present in the extractable fraction than in the alkaline-hydrolysable fraction. Luteolin was the predominant compound in the extractable fraction, followed by tricetin and various derivatives of kaempferol. This study presents one of the first reports on the quantification of tricetin aglycone outside the Myrtaceae plant family. The alkaline-hydrolysable fraction exhibited a different phenolic profile, with a significantly lower amount of phenolics. Kaempferol/derivatives, specific compounds like ferulic and 5-carboxyvanillic acids, and (epi)catechin 3-O-gallate were the predominant compounds in this fraction. Regarding phenylamides, the extractable fraction demonstrated a diverse range of these bioactive compounds, with a notable abundance of different spermine derivatives. In contrast, the hydrolysable fraction contained six spermine derivatives and one spermidine derivative. The examined fractions also revealed the presence of seventeen different alkaloids, belonging to the benzylisoquinoline, berberine and isoquinoline classes. The fatty-acid profile confirmed the prevalence of unsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, both fractions exhibited significant antioxidant activity, with the extractable fraction showing particularly high activity. Among the assays conducted, the CUPRAC assay highlighted the exceptional ability of PBP’s bioactive compounds to reduce cupric ions.

AB - The aim of this study was to find the chemical parameters for the differentiation of plum cultivars grown along the fjord areas of Western Norway and Eastern Norway, having specific agroclimatic conditions. Chemical analysis of the fruits confirmed the contents of 13 quantified elements, 22 sugar compounds, 11 organic acids, 19 phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity in 68 plum cultivars. Dominated contents were noted for nitrogen (with the maximum mean value of 3.11%), potassium (8055.80 mg/kg), and phosphorous (7878.88 mg/kg). Averagely, the highest level of sugars was determined for glucose (244.46 g/kg), fructose (197.92 g/kg), sucrose (208.25 g/kg), and sorbitol (98.02 g/kg), organic acids for malic acid (24.06 g/kg), and for polyphenol compounds were 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (66.31 mg/kg), and rutin (58.06 mg/kg). Applied principal component analysis has been useful for distinguishing the plum cultivars from three areas in Norway where copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, and sodium; sucrose, ribose, maltose, and raffinose; p-hydroxybenzoic acid, rutin, ferulic acid, kaempferol 7-O-glucoside, p-coumaric acid, and 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid were the most influential. In regard to human health and future breeding work that will have the aim to produce functional food with high health-related compounds, the plum cultivar ‘Mallard’ should be underlined due to the high level of elements, ‘Valor’ due to high sugar content, ‘Helgøyplomme’ due to content of organic acids, and ‘Diamond’ due to the content of phenolic compounds.

AB - Introduction
Electrophysiology studies of ion channels, in live filamentous fungi by patch clamp method are notpossible due to presence of rigid chitinous cell wall that prevents patch clamp pipette to access theplasma membrane. We present laser nano-surgery of the fungal cell wall that enables patch clampelectrophysiology studies. Similar approaches as one-time reports utilizing nanosecond laser pulseslong time ago were not pursued further [1,2]. Here, we demonstrate reproducible method usingfemtosecond lasers accompanied by two-photon excitation fluorescence (TPEF) imaging of hyphae.
Methods
A wild-type strain of filamentous fungus
Phycomyces blakesleeanus
(Burgeff ) [NRRL 1555(-)] were grownon glass coverslips with hand-etched grid, coated with a thin layer of 50% collagen type I as animmobilizer. Home built nonlinear laser scanning microscope [3,4] utilizing Ti:Sa tunable fs laser wasused for TPEF imaging of hyphae and the cell surgery. The latter is enabled with the custom made add-on in soft ware. Coverslip with hyphae is transferred to another microscope setup for patch clamp, consisting of micromanipulators and precise electronics for pA current measurements. The surgicalincisions and released protoplasts were additionally imaged by scanning electron microscopy for whichtreated hyphae had to undergo critical point drying procedure.
Results/Discussion
Hyphae were stained by Calcofluor White and treated with an exocytosis inhibitor (brefeldin A) and arespiration inhibitor (sodium azide) to prevent cell wall regeneration. Since the cell wall and the plasmamembrane are in the close contact [4] hyphae were kept in hyperosmotic solution to retract thecytoplasm from the cell wall. Surgical spot-wise pattern was precisely positioned at TPEF image ofselected hypha at the place where the plasma membrane was retracted. The dwell time (1s) and thelaser power (4-15mW) were set with fixed repetition rate (76MHz), pulse duration (160fs) and laserwavelength (730nm). Upon the surgery, hyphae were gently deplasmolysed. A protoplast with plasmamembrane accessible for the patch clamp pipette was released through the surgical incision (Fig 1). The>GΩ seal resistance was achieved. Numerous ion channels are recorded in diff erent configurations (oncell, inside-out, whole cell and out-out) (Fig 2).
Conclusions
The whole process (cell surgery + patch clamping) is rather complex and specific steps have to be strictlyfollowed for high success rate and reproducibility. Also, chemicals concentrations, solutions osmolarity, timing and cutting parameters have to be kept in the specified narrow range. Obtained currentrecordings provide valuable information on fungal cell membrane ionic channels.

AB - Insulin resistance is a state where a normal amount of insulin can’t provoke an appropriate metabolic response. Insulin promotes membrane trafficking of the glucose transporter GLUT4 from the storage vesicles to the plasma membrane in white adipose tissue. Adipocytes use glucose for lipogenesis and store the energy as lipid droplets. If adipocytes are unable to uptake glucose, a chronic state of hyperglycemia is developed, with severe health consequences. Polyphenols are natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents. Food rich in polyphenols has been suggested to exert an ameliorative effect on restoring insulin sensitivity, with the main identified target being AMPK1,2, one of the key sensors of intracellular energy. Here, we tested the effect of methanol extracts from three newly introduced strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa, Duch.) cultivars – 'Aprika', 'Sandra' and 'Quicky' on glucose metabolism in 3T3-F442A adipocytes. It was determined that 'Aprika' has the highest total phenolic content, relative to the other two cultivars. After 72-h exposure, none of the strawberry cultivars affected adipocyte cell growth significantly. Protein expression analysis of the differentiated adipocytes suggested 'Aprika', but not the other two cultivars, significantly increased the AMPK expression, as well as GLUT4, thus increasing glucose uptake. Strawberry extracts did not significantly affect the differentiation of adipocytes (SIRT1 and PPARγ), nor the fatty acid synthesis (ACC). Conclusively, the 'Aprika' methanol extract with high phenolic content exerts an ameliorative effect on glucose uptake, presumably through activation of the AMPK-dependent mechanism of GLUT4 trafficking. The systemic effects of the ‘Aprika’ cultivar should be further investigated. Implications of the research are decreased hyperglycemia in obese and diabetic patients, by the introduction of the 'Aprika' strawberry cultivar into everyday diet. References 1. AB - Pikeperch of age classes 3+ and 4+ were collected from the Garaši reservoir (Serbia)
to analyze their bioindicator potential and compare their possible differences. Concentrations of
26 elements were determined in gills, muscles, and liver by inductively-coupled plasma optical
emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and of 17 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and six polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs) in muscle by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC-MS).
Histopathological changes in the liver and gills were analyzed as biomarkers of general fish health.
Only the concentrations of Cd, Na, and P in the muscles differed significantly. The OCPs and
PCBs concentrations were below the detection limits, so fish meat consumption does not pose a risk
concerning these substances. Hg and Cd exceeded the maximum allowed concentrations in some
4+ individuals, probably due to biomagnification. Gills were the most affected by metal exposure in
both age classes. Histopathological changes and indices were minor and did not differ significantly
between age classes, suggesting that pollution did not affect the morphology and structure of gills and
liver. There were no significant correlations between elemental accumulation and fish condition or
between histopathological scores. Therefore, both age classes can be used as bioindicators of pollution.

AB - In this study, the effects of foliar applied methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on drought-stressed Impatiens walleriana growth and leaf physiology parameters: stomatal conductance, chlorophyll, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and nitrogen balance index (NBI), were evaluated. These parameters could serve as indicators of drought tolerance of I. walleriana, a popular horticultural plant worldwide that is very sensitive to drought. The experiment included four treatments: control, drought-stressed plants sprayed with distilled water, drought-stressed plants sprayed with 5 µM MeJA, and drought-stressed plants sprayed with 50 µM MeJA. Foliar spraying with MeJA was performed twice: seven days before and on the day of drought induction. The stressed plant groups were non-irrigated to achieve soil water contents (SWC) of 15 and 5%, while control plants were well-watered throughout the experiment (35–37% SWC). The results of this study showed that drought significantly reduced I. walleriana fresh and dry shoot weight, as well as total leaf area, but did not impact on dry matter content. The foliar application of MeJA improved growth parameters of I. walleriana, depending on the elicitor concentration and drought intensity. Stomatal conductance was slightly reduced at 5% SWC, and foliar applied MeJA at both concentrations. The flavonoid index was slightly reduced at 15 and 5% SWC when 50 µM MeJA was foliar applied, while there were no observed changes in the anthocyanin index in any treatments. The foliar application of 50 µM MeJA increased the chlorophyll index and NBI of I. walleriana at 5% SWC, indicating a contribution of the elicitor to plant drought tolerance at the physiological level.

AB - Considering the health-benefits of berry fruits consumption and increased market demands for food authenticity as one of the most important quality assurances, phenolic profiling by high-performance thin layer chromatography and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography hyphenated with mass spectrometry was combined with multivariate analysis for phytochemical characterization and intercultivar discrimination of cultivated berry seeds. The phenolic profiles of 45 berry seeds from nine genuine Serbian cultivated fruit species (strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, black currant, blueberry, gooseberry, cape gooseberry, chokeberry, and goji berry) revealed a good differentiation according to botanical origin. In order to determine biomarkers responsible for the classification, a total of 103 phenolic compounds were identified, including 53 phenolic acids and their derivatives, 26 flavonoids and 24 glycosides. Biomarkers derived from the phenolic profile of berry seeds proved to be a powerful tool in the authentication of botanical origin, and may be useful in detection of frauds in berry-based seed-containing product.

AB - This study deals with the evaluation of the bioaccessibility and antioxidant properties of phenolic compounds from heat-treated skim goat-milk powder fortified with grape-pomace-seed extract, after in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detection and mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD MS/MS) analysis confirmed the abundant presence of phenolic acids and flavan-3-ols in the grape-pomace-seed extract (SE) and heat-treated skim goat-milk/seed-extract powder (TME). After in vitro digestion of TME powder and recovery of total quantified phenolics, flavan-3-ols and phenolic acids were 18.11%, 24.54%, and 1.17%, respectively. Low recovery of grape-pomace-seed phenolics indicated strong milk protein–phenolic interactions. Electrophoretic analysis of a soluble fraction of digested heat-treated skim goat milk (TM) and TME samples showed the absence of bands originating from milk proteins, indicating their hydrolysis during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. The digested TME sample had better antioxidant properties in comparison to the digested TM sample (except for the ferrous ion-chelating capacity, FCC), due to the presence of bioaccessible phenolics. Taking into account the contribution of the digestive cocktail, digested TME sample had lower values of total phenolic content (TPC), in vitro phosphomolybdenum reducing capacity (TAC) and ferric reducing power (FRP), compared to the undigested TME sample. These results could be attributed to low recovery of phenolic compounds. TME powder could be a good carrier of phenolics to the colon; thus, TME powder could be a promising ingredient in the formulation of functional food.

AB - Domesticated international (standard) apple cultivars, together with resistant apple cultivars are the core of the Serbian apple production. Furthermore, autochthonous cultivars are characterized by a good adaptability to the local environmental conditions and represent a valuable source of genetic variability, as well as an important source of the gene pool for further breeding programs. Additionally, they show a higher phenolic content and a stronger antioxidant activity, in comparison to commercial cultivars. Therefore, they are more likely to be used as a functional food. The subjects of this study were seventeen samples of fruits and leaves from autochthonous apple cultivars, five international standard cultivars, and six resistant apple cultivars. The phenolic profile was determined using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), coupled with a diode array detector and a TSQ Quantum Access Max triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. A total of twenty compounds were quantified in the samples. Most of the analyzed phenolics were detected in higher amounts in the peel, compared to the mesocarp. The results of the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicate that 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid is present in the highest amount in the mesocarp, while in the peel and leaves, quercetin-glycosides were detected in the highest amount. According to the MANOVA: phloretin, phlorizin, 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, kaempferol, and p-coumaric acid are present in significantly higher levels in the autochthonous cultivars, compared to the standard and resistant ones (in both fruits and leaves). Therefore, these compounds can be used as chemical tracers of the apple varietal origin.

AB - Plant-based food represents an excellent source of different nutrients and bioactive compounds, such as phenolics, carotenoids, vitamins, etc., with proven health benefits for humans. The content of selected phytochemicals, polyphenolic profile, and biological activity (antioxidant potential and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity) of fruit extracts of medlar (Mespilus germanica L.), blackthorn (Prunus spinosa L.), and common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.), the neglected Rosaceae species originated from Serbia were studied. Targeted UHPLC/(−)HESI–MS/MS quantitative analysis of phenolic compounds revealed pinocembrin only in medlar fruit extract, and it is the first report of this flavanone in medlar fruits. Total phenolic content did not differ between extracts, whereas significant differences were observed for the contents of total flavonoids, total phenolic acids, and total gallotannins. Monomeric anthocyanins and total anthocyanins were significantly higher in blackthorn compared to medlar and hawthorn fruit extracts (p < 0.05). DPPH· and ABTS·+ scavenging activities for examined fruits were modest compared to other natural antioxidants and BHT. The most potent inhibitory activity toward α-glucosidase expressed medlar and blackthorn extracts with IC50 values of 129.46 and 199.84 μg/mL, respectively, which was higher compared to the standard drug acarbose.

AB - Aeroponics is a modern and soilless technology that is used for the efficient production of pre-basic seed potatoes, namely minitubers. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the cultivar and type of planting material on the production of minitubers in the aeroponic facility in Guča, Serbia, at short, 7-day harvest intervals. Although aeroponic cultivation prolonged the vegetative cycle in all five investigated cultivars, the dynamics of minituber formation varied between genotypes. Two early maturing cultivars, Cleopatra and Sinora, quickly completed the vegetative cycle and formed a small number of minitubers, while the medium-late to late cultivars, Kennebec and Agria, steadily tuberized during the entire cultivation period in the aeroponic facility. The type of planting material affected the dynamics of minituber formation in three investigated cultivars. Sinora, Cleopatra, and Désirée’s plants of in vitro origin reached the final number of minitubers and the vines started senescing much earlier than plants of minituber origin. Kennebec and Agria plants of in vitro origin produced the largest number of minitubers (53.8–54.5) and showed the highest yield (9.8–10.5 kg m−2) during the cultivation period, while the heaviest minitubers were formed by Sinora plants of minituber origin (15.48 g). In addition, the temperature during pre-harvest periods significantly affected the number of tubers at harvests in Kennebec and Agria, and minituber mass in Désirée.

AB - Xanthohumol (XN) and isoxanthohumol (IXN), prenylated flavonoids from Humulus lupulus, have been shown to possess antitumor/cancerprotective, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and antiangiogenic properties. In this study, mesoporous silica (SBA-15) was loaded with different amounts of xanthohumol and isoxanthohumol and characterized by standard analytical methods. The anticancer potential of XN and IXN loaded into SBA-15 has been evaluated against malignant mouse melanoma B16F10 cells. When these cells were treated with SBA-15 containing xanthohumol, an increase of the activity correlated with a higher immobilization rate of XN was observed. Considering the amount of XN loaded into SBA-15 (calculated from TGA), an improved antitumor potential of XN was observed (IC50 = 10.8 ± 0.4 and 11.8 ± 0.5 µM for SBA-15|XN2 and SBA-15|XN3, respectively; vs. IC50 = 18.5 ± 1.5 µM for free XN). The main mechanism against tumor cells of immobilized XN includes inhibition of proliferation and autophagic cell death. The MC50 values for SBA-15 loaded with isoxanthohumol were over 300 µg/mL in all cases investigated.

AB - Simple Summary: Natural enemies of cheatgrass, an invasive plant in the western USA that is
associated with recent increases in destructive wildfires, were sought as part of a classical biological
control program targeting that plant. A population of mites was discovered infesting cheatgrass
plants in central Bulgaria and determined to be a new species using morphological, morphometric
analysis (i.e., measurement of specific body parts) and DNA barcoding (i.e., comparison of DNA
sequences in genes shared by all mite species). Without these modern analytical tools, this mite
would probably have been considered as the same species as another mite that infests other plants.
This new mite species will now be tested to determine if it is suitable for importation and release in
the USA as a biological control agent of cheatgrass.
Abstract: A new species of eriophyoid mite, Aculodes marcelli sp. nov., was discovered on cheatgrass,
Anisantha tectorum (L.) Nevski (syn. Bromus tectorum L.), an annual grass that is native to Eurasia and
Northern Africa. This grass was introduced to North America near the end of the 19th century and
now is widespread and associated with the observed increases in the size, frequency, and intensity of
wildfires in western N. America. In this paper, A. marcelli sp. nov., is morphologically described and
illustrated. Compared with other Aculodes spp., it differs based on morphology and the sequence
of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase gene, subunit I (MT-CO1). Results of morphometric
analysis showed clear differentiation between A. marcelli sp. nov., and the most similar congener, A.
altamurgiensis from Taeniatherum caput-medusae. Analysis of MT-CO1 sequence divergence revealed
significant levels of genetic variation (17.7%) and supported the results from the morphometric
analysis; therefore, it is determined that they are two different species. Aculodes marcelli sp. nov., is a
new candidate agent for classical biological control of A. tectorum.

AB - Introduction The aim of this study was to find the best conditions for the extraction of rutin and quercetin from Sophora flower in acacia honey as an extractant, and to formulate a new product – honey with added value. Methods For determination of the optimal extraction conditions of the above mentioned compounds, 10% m/m of the dried Sophora flower was added to honey and the concentration of rutin and quercetin was monitored, at 4 °C and room temperature at 1, 15, 40 and 90 day intervals. The analyses of rutin and quercetin content in honey were performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detection. The content of rutin and quercetin in the flower was also determined to check the quality of the herbal drug used, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the extraction. Results The extraction of rutin and quercetin, in a honey sample using 10% of the Sophora flower, stored at room temperature, for 40 days, was the most intense one (150.24 mg/kg of rutin and 1338.93 mg/kg of quercetin). Sophora flower corresponds to the pharmacopoeia requirements for the quality of an herbal drug. The concentrations of rutin and quercetin in acacia honey were 0.08 and 0.14 mg/kg, respectively. The concentration of rutin in honey from the melliferous pasture of the Sophora flower was 0.40 mg/kg, while quercetin was below the detection limit (0.1 mg/kg). Conclusions Honey, enriched with rutin and quercetin from Sophora flower, had sensory acceptability and pleasant taste and aroma.

AB - The current study aimed to phytochemically characterize (including a detailed phenolic profile) two endemic Balkan's species (Hieracium waldsteinii and Onosma stellulata) and determine their possible application as a source of natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents. The main phenolic compound in both species (in all examined parts) was chlorogenic acid. Eriodictyol, genistein and naringenin were quantified only in H. waldsteinii while isorhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside and sinapic acid were characteristic for O. stellulata. The highest antioxidant activity (98 mg AAE/g dry weight for TAC assay) was ascribed to the flower extract of H. waldsteinii while the lowest results (∼4.3 mg AAE/g dry weight for FRP assay) were exhibited by the extracts obtained from the plant's stem. Antimicrobial assays showed moderate antibacterial, i. e., moderate/strong activity against several tested fungi (in particular Trichoderma viride). Correlation analysis revealed strong positive connection between phenolic compounds and reducing power of extracts as well as between total phenolic and flavonoid content and the obtained minimal inhibitory concentration recorded in antibacterial assays.

AB - Prenylflavonoid from hops - xanthohumol (XN) has been shown to possess diverse biological properties, including strong anticancer activity. One of the possibilities for improving delivery and effectiveness of drugs is the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticles such as nontoxic SBA-15. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the in vitro anticancer potential of XN loaded with different amounts into SBA-15 particles against malignant mouse melanoma B16-F10 cells. Our data indicate that SBA-15 containing XN showed a loading rate–activity dependence. Importantly, immobilization of XN into SBA-15 preserved and even potentiated its antitumor potential, in comparison to its free form. Also, by loading into SBA-15 carrier, XNs’ anticancer mode of action converted from predominantly cytotoxic to cytostatic, resulting in a reduction of dividing potential. In addition, contrasting the previously observed apoptotic-inducing property of free XN, immobilized XN induced autophagic cell death that might be important for disabling tumor repopulation in response to apoptotic-induced cell proliferation, a mechanism often asscociated with therapy failure of advanced forms of cancer1.

AB - In recent years, the manufacturing of functional food has gained a lot of attention. The most recent
studies indicate that bovine milk proteins are suitable carriers for a whole range of bioactive
substances, mainly because of their micellar structure.
The aim of our study was to examine the possibility of goat milk proteins (RM - raw skimmed milk
and CN - casein fraction) to deliver A. blazei extracts (VA - hot water extract and GA - glucan
extract) in order to use all the potential health benefits of this mushroom. Furthermore, the effect of
thermal treatment (90⁰C, 10 min; TRM – thermally treated RM and TCN - thermally treated CN) on
carrier properties was also evaluated. The mixture of different goat milk proteins and A. blazei
extracts were prepared and zeta-potential and particle size distribution were determined by a laser
light-scattering particle size analyzer, using distilled water as a dispersant.
The best results were obtained with the RM and TRM mixtures. It can be concluded that changes in
particle size and electric charge of the micellar surface occurring in goat milk after heating have a
positive impact on carrier properties. The particle size of TRM mixtures increased by 13.3 to 15.7%
compared to the size of TRM particles, whereas the zeta-potential of TRM/VA increased for 6.6%
compared to that of TRM. TCNs did not follow this trend. The measurement of CNs particle size
distribution showed the presence of significantly different sizes (coefficient of variation >30%),
whereas the zeta-potential measurements were stable. These results imply that the measurements of
zeta-potential cannot be interpreted without the particle size data.

AB - Commercial production of potato, Solanum tuberosum L., is based on vegetative propagation by seed tubers. High-quality seed material is obtained from potato plants grown from minitubers (pre-basic seed potatoes). Likewise, minitubers are produced by acclimation and growth on soil or solid substrate of previously in vitro-propagated, virus-free microplants or microtubers. Aeroponics is a modern, soilless technique for minitubers’ production. In the aeroponic cultivation system, foliage is grown under conventional conditions, while the underground stems and roots of potato plants are located in a dark chamber, module, suspended in the air, and supplied with water and nutrients through a nutrient solution dispersed in the form of fine mist particles. Minitubers (tubers of 5-25 mm in size) are produced on underground stems, namely stolons. Potato minituber propagation in aeroponics has significant advantages over other used systems or techniques. This system enables the production of a high number of minitubers per plant during the production cycle that can usually be repeated during the year. Besides, successive harvesting allows minitubers to reach the desired, uniform size. Tubers grown in an aeroponic system are well-protected from pests and soil-borne diseases. Due to the recirculation of nutrient solution, efficient usage of space, and minimal environmental pollution, aeroponics enables the production of minitubers in an environmentally friendly manner. This chapter summarizes the current knowledge of the aeroponic production of potatoes. The advantages and deficiencies of this interesting production technique are also discussed.
