AB  - Lymantria dispar L. a polyphagous herbivore is the most dangerous insect pest of forest and fruit trees. Its host range is estimated at more than 500 plant species from 73 families (Lance, I 983, Liebhold et al., 1995). 111e locust tree Robinia pseudoacaccia is a plant that the gypsy moth avoids as a food (Barbosa and Krischik, 1987). Locust tree leaves contain large quantities of alkaloids and flavonoids (Bagrbosa & Krischik 1987). Some of them may have toxic and prooxidant effects (Hodnick et al., 1986). Gypsy moth populations in locust tree forest are rare (Jankovic 1958). The ingestion of oxidizable flavonoids can exacerbate oxidative stress in herbivorous insects (Ahmad, 1992; Felton and Summers, 1995; Pardini, 1995). The flavonoid quercetin used in this experiment was chosen as test prooxidant plant allelochemical. Upon insect ingestion quercetin is metabollicaly activated by one-electron oxidation to a free radical (o semiquinone) which in turn reacts with 02 (oxygen) to generate 0{
(superoxide anion radical) and consequently H202 (hydrogen peroxide) and
OH (hydroxyl radical) resulting in numerous destructive reactions in insect cell (Hodnick et al.,1986; Hodnick et al.,1989).

AB - In our study we investigated the effects of exogenous cadmium (Cd, 17 mg /day /kg b.m. in drinking water), coenzyme Q10 (CoQ 10, 16 mg/kg/dose CoQ10 dissolved in olive oil, i.m., every fifth day) and Cd+CoQ10 (i n above mentioned amou nt s) on antioxidant de fense enzyme activities (Total SOD, Mn SOD, CuZn SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, GST and GR) in interscapular hrown adipose tis sue (IBAT) of male two months old Wistar albin o rats during 30 days.
Cd induces significantly increased Mn SOD activity, while concomitant treatment of animals with Cd+CoQ10 reversed this change. The activity of CuZn SOD was significantly decreased
both in Cd and Cd+CoQ10 treated animals. CAT activity was sig nificantly increased in rats treated with Cd, whereas Cd+CoQ 10 normalized the activity of this enzyme. The activity of GSH-Px was significantly increased in all investigated groups of animals. Cd in duces an increased activity of GST, but by concomitant treatment of rats with Cd+CoQ10 the GST activity was retained . The activity of GR was significantly increased in Cd treated animals, while in rats treated with Cd+CoQ10 was signi fican tl y decre_ased.
It can be concluded that Cd induces oxidativ e stress and a l ter the activities of some antioxidant defense enzymes in IBAT of rats. It is also shown that CoQ 10 can normal ized Mn SOD, CAT a nd GST activities after Cd-induced changes .

AB - Cadmium (Cd) is an ubiquitous toxic metal that is involved in a variety of pathological condicions. The present study investigated the po-,sible protective role of vitamin E (Vit E) in cadmium induced oxidative stress in the blood of rats. Male, Wistar albino rats 3 months old (weighing 280 ± 30 g) were used in our experiments. Rats were injected with a single dose (1) of CdClz (0,4 mg Cd/kg b.m., i.p., 24h before the sacrificing), (2)Vit E + Cd (20 UI Vit E/kg b.m., i.m., 48h +0,4 mg Cd/kg b.m., i.p., 24h before the sacrificing). The group of animals without treatment was control. The activities of enzymatic components of AOS: copper zinc containing superoxide-dismutase (CuZn SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione-peroxidase (GSH
Px), glutathione-reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were analyzed
in erythrocytes and concentrations of non-enzymatic components of AOS: reduced	'
glutathione (GSH), ascorbic acid (AsA) and vitamin E (Vit E), as well as lipid peroxide (LP) concentration were determined in the blood of rats. Acute intoxication	I of rats with Cd were followed by significantly increased LP and increased activities I
of enzymatic, as well as concentrations of non-enzymatic components of AOS in blood. The pretreatment with vitamin E after acute intoxication of rats with Cd partialy improved components of AOS. Our results indicate that liposoluble antioxidant (Vit E) resulted as suitable and potent antioxidant action, probably as consequence of quenchening of reactive oxygen species, inhibiton of lipid peroxidation and prevention of free-radical mediated injuries. The results of this study suggested that vitamin E functions as antioxygenic nutrients.

AB - Cadmium (Cd) is a widely used industrial chemical and it is well known that Cd induces on oxidative stress that in oxidative deterioration of biological macromolec ules. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a lipid co-factor th at is involved in numerous enzymatic processes and is present in most cellular membranes. Thus, CoQ1o is also important as a lipophilic regulator of oxidative stress.
The aim of this study was to investigate a possible protective influence of CoQ 10 in Cd induced oxidative stress in the rat hearts.
Male, Wistar albino rats (3 months old), injected with (I) CdCh (0.4 mg Cd/k b.m.,i.p., 24h before the sacrificing), (2) CoQ10 + Cd (20 mg CoQ10/kg b.m., i.m., 48 before the sacrificing + 0.4 mg Cd/kg b.m., i.p., 24h before the sacrificing) and (3) CoQ10 (20 mg CoQ10/kg b.m., i.m., 48h before the sacri ficing). Acute intoxication· of rats with Cd were followed by significantly increased of all examined antioxidant
defense enzymes (total SOD, Mn SOD, CnZn SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, GST and GR), while AsA and Vit E concentrations were significantly decreased. A significantly increased accumulation of Cd in heart tissue was observed· in animals treated with Cd. These ubiquitous reaction·s of Cd result as its toxic effects on whole heart and other tissues and organs.
The protective role of CoQ1o in acute Cd intoxication results as decreased activities of total SOD, CuZn SOD, GSH-Px and GST. AsA concentration was also reversed to the control value. However, pretreatment with CoQ10 induced further increase of CAT and GR activities and Vit E concentration. Our results showed that CoQ10 functions as a lipid-soluble antioxidant, and protects cells from lipid peroxidation. The results of our study suggested that CoQ 10 functions as a potent antioxidant in protection of rat heart against oxidative stress induced by Cd.

CdCb in drink water during 15 days (Cd), (2) Vit E+CoQ 1o+Cd (pretreated with 20 IU/kg/dose of Vit E and mg/kg/dose of CoQ10 i.m., every fifth day during 15 days and then treated with 14 mg/day b.m. of Cd during next 15 days Third group (3) was control (C). After the treatment the rats w sacrificed by decapitation and blood samples were collected and analyzed. In the blood of rats conce ntration of lipide peroxides (LP) were evaluated, while the activity of gluta tione transferase was assayed in the plasma after separation from the blood cells.
The results obtained in our experiments show that acute treatment with Cd leads to significantly increased LP concentration (p<0.01) in the blood of rats in respect to the con animals. Pretreatment with Vit E+CoQ 10 pryor to Cd exposure normalyzed the concentration LP in the· blood. Contrary to that, in chronic Cd intoxication concentration of LP significantly decreased (p<0.005) in comparison to the control value. Pretreatment Vit E+CoQ 10 pryor to Cd intoxication influences an additional decrease of LP concentra (p<0.005) compared with controls. It appears that in chronic Cd treatment the period of 15 day sufficient for the development of efficient red blood cell protection against Cd (per)oxida damage. The activity of GST in the plasma of rats acutely treated with Cd was signi fica increased in respect to the controls (p<0.02). Pretreatment of rats with Vit E+CoQ 10 influenc significant decrease of GST activity in the plasma (p<0.05). Similar results were obtained chronic Cd intoxication where Cd induces a significantly higher activity of GST in the pla (p<0.01), while pretreatment with Vit E+CoQ 10 reversed this value to the control level.
From the presented results, it can be concluded that Cd both in acute and chr
intoxication influences blood LP concentration and plasma GST activi ty . Pretreatment antioxidants, such as Vit E and CoQ 10 diminishes the toxi c effects of Cd on both evalu parameters. At the same time, we were also noticed a different mechanisms of defence against toxicity in acute and in chronic intoxication, especially in the case of blood LP con cen tration.

AB - Cadmium induced lipid peroxidation (LPO) and altering the antioxidant system after the administration of a sin gle dose of CdCl2 (0.4 mg /kg body wt, i.p., 24 hours before the sacrificing) was studied in the blood of rats. The protect ive role of coenzyme Q (20 mg CoQ10/kg body wt, i.m., 48 hours before the sacrificing) and vita min E (20 iu Vit E/kg body wt, i. m., 48 hours before the sacrificing) was also studied in the blood of rats after the acute intoxication with cadmium. The treatment with Cd increased LPO in the blood while animals pre treated with coenzyme Q and/or vitamin E prior to Cd treatment showed decreased LPO as compared with animals given Cd alone. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CATt, glutathion e peroxidase (GS H-Px) and glut athione reductas e (GR) in erythrocytes and activities glutathione S-transferase (GST) as well as concentrations ascorbic acid (AsA) and vitamin E (Vit E) in the plasma were significantly incr eased of Cd and CoQ 10 treated rats (p<0.05 or Jess). The pre treatment with coen zyme Q and/or vitamin E prior to Cd administration partially reversed such changes. In animals treatment with antioxidants prior to Cd treatment decreased significantly activiti es of SOD, CAT and GR in erythrocytes, and activity GST and concentrations AsA in the plasma and were the same as con trols values. However, the pretreatment with coenzyme Q and/or vitamin E prior to Cd administration showed increased erythrocyte GSH-Px activity and concentrations vit amin E in the plasma as compared with animals given Cd alone. The results sugges that Cd int oxic ation induces oxidative stress and alters the antioxidant system, resulting in increased lipid peroxidation to rat erythrocytes. Coenzyme Q and vitamin E are the powerful liposoluble antioxidants which in cells quenched free oxygen radicals, inhibit lipid peroxidation and thus prevent free-radical mediated oxidant injuries. It is known that coenzyme Q and vitamin E may act sinergically as antioxidanrs. The pretreatment with coenzyme Q and /or vitamin E prior to Cd treatment showed protective effect against toxic influence of Cd on peroxidation of mem brane lipids and altering the antioxidant system in the blood of rats.

AB - In our experiments conunon carps (Cyprinus carpio L.) were acclimated to an oxygen concentration of 7.3 lmg/L water (100%) - control (C) group. Two ex perimental groups (H1, H2) were exposed to acute hy poxia. One of them was exposed to a progressive reduction of 02 to 4.1 O2 mg/L (55%) for 1 ¼ hour s and another 1.95mg/L (25%) for 2 hours, respectively. The fourth experimental group (HP) was exposed to a progressive increase of oxygen concentration O2 to 10 mg/L (150%) for I5 minutes, respectively. In our exper iment was determinated antioxidant defense· s yste m enzymes activity (superoxide-dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) glutathione-peroxidase (GSH-Px) , and glutathione-reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) ac tivity (Misra, H.P. and Fridovich, I. (19 72), Beutler (1982), Tamure et al. ( I982), Habig et al. (1974), Glatzle et al. (1974).
Our res ult s show that stress caused by acute hypoxia and hyperoxia significantly changes the activities of antioxidant defense system enzymes, superoxide-dismutase (SOD), glutathione-peroxidase (GSH-Px), and glutathione-reductase (GR) in carps gills. Acute pro longed hypoxia (H2) caused a cetrain degree of adaptation in respect to catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S transferase (GST) activity .

AB - Cadmium (Cd) is an important pollutant of environment which accwnulates in the liver and the kidneys, as well as in other tissues. Cd induces oxidative damage causing many metabolic, histological and pathological changes, such as nephrotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, increased lipid peroxidation (LP) and alteration of the antioxidant defense system (AOS). Recent studies have shown that coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and vitamin E (Vit E) are the powerful liposoluble antioxidants, which inhibit lipid peroxidation and thus prevent free radical med.iated oxidative injuries. It is well known that CoQ10 and Vit E may act synergistically as antioxidants. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible protective influence of CoQ10 and Vit E in Cd induced oxidative stress in the rat hearts.

AB - Rapid urbanization and eutrophization, disturbing normal ecological equilibrium of water ecosystems and directly endangering living organisms is the main problem in Boka Kotorska bay. Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Bivalvia, Mollusca) is a species which naturally inhabits the waters of Boka Kotorska bay, but it is artificially bred and increasingly used in human diet. We established that the presence of heavy metals in sea water even in allowed concentrations caused increased accumulation in tissues of mussel (Cu, Mn, Cr, Ni, Al, Mg, Zn, Cd, Pb) pointing to a numerous negative consequences not only in those organisms but in humans, potential consumers of mussels as well.

AB - Coenzyme Q (CoQ) is present in almost all living organisms where it exhibits antioxidant properties and also represents an obligatory component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain (2). CoQ may prevent lipide peroxidation, protects DNA from oxidation and protects organism from oxidative stress induced by various toxic agents (1). The scope of our study was to investigate the concentrations of ascorbic acid (AsA) and vitamin E (Vit E) in the liver, kidneys, heart and testes, as well as CoQ concentration in the liver, kidneys and testes of male, two months old Wistar albino rats treated with 20 mg/kg of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) dissolved in olive oil, i.m., every fifth day, during 30 days. An average intake of CoQ10 was 16 mg/kg/dose. All obtained results were compared with control animals (C).
Our results show that treatment with CoQ10 induced a significant increase of AsA and Vit E concentrations in all investigated tissues. The concentration of CoQ was significantly increased only in the liver of rats treated with CoQ10. It is well known that CoQ10 in its reduced form (CoQ10H2) is the powerful antioxidant which regenerate the active form of Vit E from the Vit E radicals (tocopheroxyl radicals, Vit E"), (4), stabilized extracellular ascorbate by its NADPH-CoQ10 reductase (3) and elevate the endogenous CoQ pool in the cells (1). At the other hand, dose and time dependent studies were shown that CoQ concentration after parenteral administration was increased only in the plasma and liver ofrats (5).It can be concluded that all obtained effects induced by CoQ10 led to the elevated concentrations of non-enzymatic components of antioxidant defense system and increased antioxidant protection of all examined tissues.

AB - The aim of our study was to investigate the activities of copper zinc containing superoxide dismutase (CuZn SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR), as well as ascorbic acid (AsA), vitamin E (Vit E) and lipide peroxide (LP) concentrations in the blood of male two months old Wistar albino rats. The animals were divided as follows: (1) untreated controls (C); (2) animals treated with 14 mg/day/kg b.m. cadmium in drinking water during 15 days (Cd); (3) rats treated with 20 IU/kg/dose of Vit E and 15 mg/kg/dose of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), i.m., every fifth day during 15 days (Vit E+CoQ10) and (4) animals pretreated with Vit E and CoQ10 in above mentioned amounts during 15 days and then treated with 14 mg/day/kg b.m. of Cd during next 15 days (Cd+Vit E+CoQ10). Each group consisted of seven animals. All obtained results were compared in respect to the control animals.
Cadmium induced a significant increase of GST activity, as well as Vit E concentration in the plasma. In Vit E+CoQ10 treated animals the activities of GSH-Px and GR in erythrocytes were significantly decreased, whereas plasma AsA and Vit E concentrations were markedly elevated. In Cd+Vit E+CoQ10 treated rats erythrocyte GSH-Px and GR activities, as well as plasma Vit E concentration were significantly increased, while plasma AsA concentration was significantly decreased. In all examined groups of animals LP concentration in the whole blood was significantly decreased. The obtained results show that Cd in the dosages administered influenced antioxidant defense system in the blood of rats and the protective role of Vit E and CoQ10 against Cd toxicity was also observed.

AB - The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) administration on the activities of superoxide dismutases: total (Tot SOD), copper zinc containing (CuZn SOD) and manganese containing (Mn SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px,) glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR) in liver, kidneys, heart and testes of male two months old Wistar albino rats. The animals were divided in two experimental groups: (1) control rats (C) and (2) rats treated with 20 mg/kg/dose of coenzyme Q10 by i.m. injections, every fifth day during 30 days (CoQ10).
An average intake of CoQ10 was 16 mg/kg/dose. All obtained results were compared in respect to the control animals.
The obtained data shows that Tot SOD activity was significantly increased in the heart of CoQ10 treated animals. At the same time, the activity of CuZn SOD was also increased in the heart, as well as in testes of CoQ10 treated rats. Mn SOD activity was markedly decreased in kidneys and testes, while in heart was significantly increased. The activity of CAT was significantly decreased in liver, kidneys and heart, whereas GSH-Px activity was decreased only in the kidneys of CoQ10 treated animals. At the same time, GSH-Px activity was markedly elevated in heart and testes. Finally, the activity of GR was significantly decreased in the heart of animals received CoQ10.
The obtained results show that CoQ1O in the dosage administered influenced antioxidant enzyme activities in examined tissues of rats. It is also shown that various tissues exhibit different response to CoQ10 depending of their metabolic activity.

AB - We investigated the activity of antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutases - total (Tot SOD), copper zinc containing (CuZn SOD) and manganese containing (Mn SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in the liver, kidneys, heart and interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT), as well as contents of ascorbic acid (AsA) and vitamin E (Vit E) in the liver and kidneys of male two months old Wistar albino rats. The animals were divided in two experimental groups: control animals (C) and animals treated with selenium (Se). The rats treated with selenium were drank water _c ontaining 0.1 µg/mL selenium (Se) as Na-selenite during 30 days. The average daily intake of 7 µg Se/kg body mass was calculated from the water consumed. Both experimental groups consisted of seven animals. The obtained results were compared in respect to the control animals. .
Our results show that Tot SOD and CuZn SOD activities were significantly increased in the liver (p<0.02), kidneys (p<0.005), heart (p<0.005) and IBAT (p<0.05) of Se treated animals, while the activity of Mn SOD was significantly increased only in the liver (p<0.02). CAT-activitywas statistically increased in the liver (p<0.02) of animals treated with Se, while the GSH-Px activity was significantly increased only in the heart (p<0.02). The activity of GST was significantly increased in the liver (p<0.02), kidneys (p<0.02) and heart (p<0.005) of Se treated animals.
The obtained results show that AsA content in the liver and kidneys was significantly increased (p<0.02 and p<0.05, respectively). The content of Vit E was also significantly increased in the liver (p<0.005) and kidneys (p<0.005) of animals exposed to Se.
Presented results show that oral intake of Se as Na-selenite, improves antioxidant defense system by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities, as well as, by elevation of AsA and Vit E contents in the all examined tissues of rats.

We measured the following parameters of energy metabolism: glucose (Gly), lactate (Lac) and pyruvate (Pyr) levels , Lac/Pyr ratio, ATP, ADP and AMP levels, ATP/ADP ratio, total adenine nucleotide (TAN) levels and adenylate energy charge (AEC). All obtained results were compared in respect to the control animals. Our results show that Gly level did not changed, while Lac and Pyr levels were significantly increased in Vit E + CoQ10 treated rats. At the same time Lac/Pyr ratio was significantly decreased. In Cd and Cd + Vit E + CoQ10 treated animals ATP level was significantly decreased, whereas AMP level was significantly increased. ADP level did not significantly alter in any of examined group of animals. A significant decrease of ATP/ADP ratio and TAN levels in the same experimental groups were observed. AEC did not alter in any of investigated group of rats. It can be concluded that Vit E and CoQ IO have partial protect i, ·e role on energy metabolism in the blood of rats influenced by Cd.

The an mals were divided in two experimental groups: (1) control rats (C) and (2) rats treated with 20 mg/kg/dose ofcoenzyme Q10 by i.m. injections, every fifth day during 30 days (CoQ10) . An average intake of CoQ10 was 16 mg/kg/dose. After the trearm ent, the animals were exanguinated by decapitation alw ays between 8 and IO A.M. and fresh blood was collected in heparinized test tubes.
The obtained results show that CoQ10 did not influenced the activities of CuZn SOD and CAT in RBCs of rats. By quenching organic oxygen-derived free radicals CoQ10 protects GSH-Px and activity of this enzyme molecule in RBCs of rats treated with CoQ10 was significantly decreased in comparison to the control animals (p<0.05). After the treatment of rats with CoQ10 the activity of GST in the plasma was significantly elevated in respect to the controls (p<0.02).
Our findings confirm the results of earlier investigations, which were also showed that CoQ10 causes an increased activity of GST, and thus improve defense from oxidant injuries in normal and pathophysiological conditions.

AB - The purpose of our study was to elucidate the effects of olive oil on antioxidant enzyme activities: superoxide dismutases (SODs): total (Tot SOD), copper zinc containing (CuZn SOD) and manganese containing (Mn SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR) in liver, kidneys, heart and testes of male, two months old Wistar albino rats. The animals were divided in two experimental groups: (1) control animals {C) and (2) animals treated with olive oil (o. oil, 100 mL of virgin olive oil, i.m., every fifth day during 30 days). All animals were decapitated at the end of treatment always between 8 and 10 a.m. to avoid any possible rhythmic variations in the antioxidant level. Both experimental groups consisted of seven rats. The obtained results were compared in'respectto the control animals.

Our results show that olive oil induced a significant decrease of Tot SOD activity in liver, kidneys and heart of rats, while in testes Tot SOD activity was significantly increased. At the same time, CuZn SOD activity was significantly increased in kidneys and heart, whereas in testes was significantly decreased. Contrary, Mn SOD activity was significantly decreased in kidneys, heart and testes of animals treated with olive oil. The activity of CAT was markedly decreased in liver, kidneys and heart of animals treated with olive oil, while in testes CAT activity was significantly increased. GSH-Px activity was significantly decreased in liver, kidneys and heart, whereas in testes the changes was not observed. The activity of GR was significantly increased only in the liver of animals treated with olive oil.

The obtained results show that olive oil influenced antioxidant enzyme activities in all examined tissues of rats. At the same time various tissues exhibit different response to olive oil, depending of their metabolic activity.

Rezultati naših istraživanja pokazuju da tretman koenzimom Q10, vitaminom E i maslinovim uljem, povećava antioksidacioni status (enzimske i neenzimske komponente) u tkivima pacova.

AB - The aim of our study was to investigate the possible protective role of coenizyme Q10 administration on ascorbic acid (AsA), vitamin E (vit E), and lipid peroxide (LP) concentrations in the blopd of rats chronically treated with cadmium. Results were compared to dtase obtained in control animals, as well as to those obtained in animals treated with olive pil. Compared to that of the control animals, the AsA concentration was aignificantiy Smeared in rats treated with Como olive oil, whereas vit E concentration cas significantly increased in animals treated with cadmium, CoQ10, or cadmium + CoQ10. A significant decrease in LP concentraiion was noted in arrivals treated with cadmium or with cadmium + CoO10, whereas a aig;iificant increase was seen in animals treated with olive oil. Compared to that of the animals treated uith olive oil, the ascorbic acid concentration was significantly decreased in rats treated with cadmium or with cadmium + CoQ10, whereas vit k concentration was significantly increased in an
61 Cdflt)y decreased in rats treated with cadmium, CoQ10 , or cadmium + CoQ10. Our study showed that CoQ10 administration in rats chronically exposed to exogenous cadmium exerts beneficial effects on the nonenzymatic components of the antioxidant defense system, such as AsA and vit E, resulting inâ decreased concentration of LP in the blood.

AB - We determined the activities of antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutases - total (tot. SOD), copper zinc containing (CuZn SOD) and manganese containing (Mn SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH- Px), glutathione--S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR) in male, two months old vVistar albino rats. The animals were treated with cadmium (17 mg/day/kg b.m. in drinking water), Coenzyme Q10 (C0Q10 , I6 mg/kg, i.m., every fifth day) and Cd+CoQ10 (17 mg/day/kg b.m. Cd in drin."l(ing water + 16 mg/kg, CoQ10 , i.m., every fifth day ) during 30 days. The activities of tot. SOD and CuZn SOD were significantly increased in Cd treated animals, while the activity of manganese containing superoxide dismutase (Mn SOD) was significantly decreased. In animals treated with CoQ10 Mn SOD was significantly decreas ct. The activity of CAT was significantly decreased in animals treated with CoQ10 and Cd+CoQ1c, whereas GSH-Px activity was significantly decreased in rats treated with Cd, CoQ1 0 and Cd+CoQ10 • GST activity was significantly decreased in rats exposed to Cd, CoQ10 and Cd+CoQ10 . No significant changes of GR activity in any of investigated experimental groups were observed. Our results show that CoQ10 exibit protective effects on the activities of antioxidant enzymes in kidneys of rats chronically exposed to cadmium.

AB - The aim of our study was to investigate the activities of total superoxide dismutase (Total SOD), manganese containing superoxide dismutase (Mn SOD), copper zinc containing superoxide dismutase (CuZn SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR) as well as ascorbic acid (AsA) and vitamin E (Vit E) concentrations in the heart of male, two months old Wistar albino rats. The animals were divided in four experimental groups: (1) controls (C), (2) treated with cadmium (Cd, 200 mg CdCl2 x H2O, in drinking water during 30 days), (3) treated with coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10, 20 mg/kg CoQ10 dissolved in olive oil, i.m., every fifth day) and (4) concomitantly treated with cadmium and coenzyme Q10 (Cd+CoQ10, 200 mg CdCl2 x H2O, in drinking water during 30 days + 20 mg/kg CoQ10 dissolved in olive oil, i.m., every fifth day). An average intake of 17 mg Cd/day/kg body mass was calculated from the water consumed and an average intake of CoQ10 was 16 mg/kg/dose. Each experimental group consisted of seven animals. After the treatment the rats were sacrificed by decapitation and heart tissue was isolated and prepared for analysis.
The obtained results show that Cd in the heart induces a significant increase of Total SOD, CuZn SOD and GSH-Px activities as well as AsA and Vit E concentrations in comparison to the control rats. At the same time, treatment with Cd leads to a significant decrease of CAT and GR activities. In the heart of rats treated with CoQ10 a significant increase of Total SOD, Mn SOD, CuZn SOD and GSH-Px activities as well as AsA and Vit E concentrations were observed. In the same group of animals, the activities of CAT, GST and GR were significantly decreased in respect to the control rats. By concomitant treatment of rats with Cd+CoQ10 the activities of Total SOD and Mn SOD were markedly increased in relation to the controls, while CuZn SOD activity was significantly decreased. In the animals concomitantly treated with Cd+CoQ10 the activities of CAT and GR were significantly decreased, whereas GSH-Px activity and AsA and Vit E concentrations were significantly increased in relation to the control rats.
From the presented results, it may be concluded that Cd and CoQ10 in the dosages administered influenced antioxidant defence system (AOS) in the heart of rats. The protective role of CoQ10 on AOS in the heart of rats against Cd toxicity was also observed.

AB - The effects of chronic exposure to cadmium (Cd) on the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and the protective role of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in red blood cells (RBC) of two months old male Wistar albino rats were examined. The animals were exposed to Cd (200 mg CdCl2 x H2O, in drinking water and 100 μL olive oil, i.m., every fifth day), CoQ10 (20 mg/kg CoQ10 dissolved in olive oil, i.m., every fifth day), Cd+ CoQ10 (200 mg CdCl2 x H2O, in drinking water + 20 mg/kg CoQ10 dissolved in olive oil, i.m., every fifth day) and olive oil (100 μL olive oil, i.m., every fifth day) in course of 30 days. The average intake of Cd was 17 mg/day/kg body mass and CoQ10 16 mg/kg/dose. After the treatment the animals were sacrificed without the anesthaesia and blood was collected and prepared for enzyme analysis.
The activity of SOD was significantly decreased in animals treated with olive oil when compared to the controls. At the other hand, in comparison to the animals treated with olive oil, the SOD activity was significantly increased in rats treated with Cd, CoQ10, and Cd+CoQ10. CAT activity was significantly decreased in rats exposed to Cd+CoQ10 and olive oil in respect to the control animals, while in comparison to the animals treated with olive oil CAT activity was significantly increased in animals treated with Cd, CoQ10 and Cd+CoQ10. In comparison to the controls the GSH-Px activity was significantly decreased in RBC of rats exposed to CoQ10 and olive oil. In respect to the animals treated with olive oil, the activity of GSH-Px was increased in animals treated with Cd, CoQ10 and Cd+CoQ10.
Our results show that cadmium administered with olive oil did not exhibit toxic effects on SOD, CAT and GSH-Px activities in RBC of rats. At the same time, CoQ10 by quenching of free oxygen radicals and by inhibition of lipid peroxidation may improve the antioxidant defense enzyme activities in RBC of rats. Our investigations also show that olive oil exhibit some protective effects on SOD, CAT and GSH-Px activities in red blood cells of rats.
